I was incredibly hesitant to post a review of Chubbys. There are some establishments so near and dear that I fear making them more known for my own selfish trepidation of long lines. Chubbys happens be one of my first memories of eating a cheesesteak as a kid. Not much has changed...for the better. ENVIRONMENT There is another cheesesteak establishment within walking distance of Chubbys which consistently has lengthy lines. Chubbys differs in this regard and has a lengthy menu. Upon entering, you'll find counter seating and booths and in my 30+ years of visiting I've never struggled to find a place to sit. You'll encounter the classic "Philly welcome" upon arrival. This consists of a healthy dose of skepticism followed by them knowing your mother's name within a few moments of conversing. FOOD I may be in the minority of individuals but I prefer a chicken cheesesteak to a beef cheesesteak. In this task, Chubbys sits near the top of my favorites. The bread is a smidge soggy but the chicken is well seasoned and leaves nothing to be desired. Anyway, I still had a cheesesteak myself, so it's not like it was a bad afternoon. First time to Philly of course I had to stop and get a cheesesteak being from DC. We call out steak and cheese, but nonetheless, I was excited and eager we went to this place across the street from another that smelt so good but unfortunately that place was cash only chubby seem cool upon entry the cashier didn't really ask if it was first time or make it easier to order. I personally felt a little rushed. I think they can change the menu or write in some things to let new customers know all that you can add or change with your subs. After stopping at Dalessandros the last time I was in the area, I decided to give Chubbys a try on my most recent trip. If the line is long across the street, I would highly recommend giving Chubbys a try. They have some inside seating, which is nice compared to Dalessandros. It has an old school diner kind of feel to it. You can pay with a card, which is another plus over Dalessandros. The workers also seemed much more friendly. Definitely a family type feel from the time you walk in. The cheesesteak itself was delicious. I ordered a whiz with and was very satisfied. The bread is very fresh and held up well all the meat and cheese. Tons of flavors. I would have liked the onions to have been cooked longer and incorporated into the meat, rather than just thrown on top. But overall, it was a great cheesesteak! read more

I tried the place across the street and I wasn't impressed even a little bit. Work brought me up this way again so I decided to give Chubby's a try. I love the name of the place, I liked the atmosphere outside and inside, and most importantly I was very satisfied with the size, quality, and taste of the American Wit. The roll is packed with tender chopped steak. I tried to keep it all in the roll but the meat was bursting out, no worries because Chubby's serves their cheesesteaks with a fork because they know some of the contents of the roll are going to fall on to the plate. I had an unexpected good chuckle when I read the signs they have posted in the very clean bathroom. To top it off every employee I talked to was very nice. I stopped and let a women working behind the counter know how much better I thought they were compared to the competition that's across the street and she graciously took my compliments but didn't bash their neighbor, she's a classy winner. In the heated debate of cross steak rivals, my visit to Chubby's was some what middle of the road. I will say the comparing Chubby's to Dellasandros as a whole isn't apples to apples. Chubby's actually offers patrons more in that they have indoor seating along with a dedicated parking lot, albeit small. Chubby's also offers a more extensive menu and serves draft beer inside. As a whole the cheesesteak was adequate for the Philly area. The Yuengling 20oz draft beer for $4.50 during game time was an absolute steal. The regular fries and curly fries hit the spot and the absolute move is to order a cup of cheese on the side. The strawberry cheesecake was about $6.50, slightly on the higher side for price but a solid dessert option. I will say I was EXTREMELY disappointed in Chubby's for not having the Eagles playoff game on TV. Spill over from full bars would make this a killer opportunity for them but seems like they dropped the ball. read more

Once the best, what a downward slide. This was our go-to since the month they opened. Always top quality beef and well-built sandwiches. On today's visit--the first in a couple of months--we were profoundly dissatisfied and disappointed. The steaks had gristly and tasteless beef. What happened? A worker confirmed that they changed their supplier. Also, they went from cheese slices to cheese sauce. This left a messy, runny blob of a sandwich in our basket rather than the past outstanding cheesesteak we had grown used to. So we came here on a bit of a whim. We went to the other cheesesteak place across the street and saw Chubby's. We thought let's have a comparison. First Chubby's is much more reasonably priced. But now that I've tried a Chubby's cheesesteak, I feel like you can skip the line across the street and get a comparable steak here. The steak is tender, nothing chewy about it, it's a decent grade of beef. The roll was fresh and soft as well. Generous portion of steak on the roll as well. My stomach is sensitive to grease and flat out bad food and there was nothing greasy about my cheesesteak or the fries. No tummy ache the next day! Speaking of fries, they are good here as well. No fake or cardboard taste to them like some pizza joints. My only issue with the "curly" fries are that they weren't exactly curly when I received them. This is located pretty close to a bus stop and a gas station. I don't love places that makes me feel stupid, and as soon as I walked in I was greeted with someone who was clearly done with the day and stared me down. I asked how I could get food because it wasn't immediately obvious, and they stared at me longer. Looked up Chubby's and saw that the reviews were great and decided to stop in. The atmosphere gives like a dive bar meets deli? Definitely a spot where the local community (and Charles Barkley???) flocks! Staff was extremely nice and helpful and service was quick. Ended up ordering wings to start and the buffalo sauce wasn't too bad. I had a cheesesteak with Cooper Sharp cheese, lettuce, tomato and a long hot with curly fries to share. So good! I wish the bread was toasted just a bit more to hold everything together. (They give you a lot of meat as you can see!) the fries were seasoned well and crispy. Wrapped up my other half and enjoyed it that night once I got home. (Unpopular opinion, a non reheated cheesesteak is top tier) I guess the only thing I would (lightly) complain about is the bathroom situation. My first time eating a Philly Cheese Steak in Philadelphia! Personally, I did not order from Chubby's Steak or have any sort of interaction with the business. My friends went over to order two Cheese Steaks for us to share. It didn't appear to be that busy at Chubby's Steaks since you are able to go inside to order. Also, my friends were able to get the sandwiches a lot faster in comparison to Dalessandro's Steaks & Hoagies. By the time they walked over and started eating the sandwiches, we were still waiting for my boyfriend to pay and receive the two sandwiches from Dalessandro's Steaks & Hoagies. If I had to choose between Chubby's Steaks and Dalessandro's Steaks & Hoagies, I would recommend ordering a Cheese Steak from Chubby's Steaks. The Cheese Steak had more flavor to it. I believe the cheese on the sandwich enhanced the flavors of the steak. In terms of presentation and packaging, it could be better, but it was sufficient. I'll never make it to Heaven, so I'll never know for sure what those that do experience. One guess: in Paradise, the angels can choose from among a variety of excellent Philly-style steak shops, most of which deliver. I thought about this while waiting at my hotel in Plymouth Meeting for GrubHub to bring my lunch: a Chubby's steak with Provolone and American cheese, mushrooms, grilled onions and a long hot. The sandwich was good: it had a heft to it that I appreciated; its meat and bread tasted great; extra cheese prevented dryness; and the broad, four inch-long long hot they used was an improvement on chopped or sliced peppers. Also - and this is an important benefit to the home- and hotel-bound among us - I was able to overcome the limitations of GrubHub's dismal app by calling the restaurant, speaking with the manager, Ethel, and having her tweak my order. So why not rate the place five stars? Though Chubby's steak was considerably better than one I bought a few days earlier from their across-the-street neighbor, Dalessandro's, both sandwiches left me dissatisfied, in the same ways. Perhaps it's a Roxborough thing, but both establishments chop their steak to within an inch of its life, which tricks the brain into thinking you're eating tender beef, when, in essence, you're just eating meat that's been pre-chewed. I like, but don't need, Steve's Prince of Steaks' medallions; to my way of thinking, thinly sliced ribeye vs. chopped or shredded meat makes for a better bite. Conversely, Chubby's and Dalessandro's both use large pieces of onion that's still slightly firm, and cleared, but not caramelized. I don't like chewing on onions. I prefer sweet, softened onion in my steaks that has been browned into submission, so that it becomes more ingredient and less garnish. Still, the fact that Chubby's delivers very satisfactory cheesesteaks makes visiting Philadelphia that much more comfortable. read more

tl;dr I bestow the title of Henry Ave cheesesteak king to this lesser-known Roxborough sandwich shop, but it still can't compare to the premier cheesesteaks elsewhere in the city I've been hearing rave reviews about Roxborough cheesesteak darling Dalessandro's Steaks & Hoagies for years, but I only recently heard about the competitor right across Henry Ave: Chubby's Steaks. Chubby's was established nearly 30 years after Dalessandro's, but the two cheesesteak-eries have a faceoff akin to the legendary Pat's and Geno's in the Italian Market. Recently, I had the opportunity to try the two Henry Ave rivals. Unlike Dalessandro's, Chubby's hosts a dedicated parking lot and full-service restaurant. Twinkle lights are strung above the picnic tables out front, and the street-facing windows are dominated by a bright red ATM and alcohol-related advertisements. Immediately upon entering, a plastic folding table, flanked on either side by grab-and-go snacks and single-shot liquor handles, serves as the takeout counter. Further down, cushioned stools are pressed up to the faux-stone bar counter. The bar is stocked with refrigerators of brews and shelves of cheap handles. The space stretches back surprisingly far, with plenty of upholstered black booths in the way back. A mismatched combination of 50s tunes and modern pop plays throughout the space. My partner arrived for an early weekday dinner. Chubby's had a few seated patrons and a steady stream of pickup customers, but the line to order takeout was virtually nonexistent. Service was friendly but inattentive, and my food was prepared within 5 minutes of ordering. I ordered a Cheese Steak with Cooper Sharp, with banana peppers on the side. Like Dalessandro's, the toppings were smashed into a large, limp Italian roll. Where Chubby's cheesesteak differentiates itself is in the meat. The thicker chopped ribeye was juicier and tastier, although the sliced cheese was spread across the roll rather than mixed with the meat. While I appreciated Chubby's more extensive cheese lineup (which included my favorite, Cooper Sharp), I was thrown off to find that their cheesesteaks don't come with onions or banana peppers without an additional charge. My cheesesteak clocked in at nearly $15, but (unlike Dalessandro's), I was able to pay with plastic. While Chubby's receives much less recognition than its Henry Ave counterpart, I found that Chubby's cheesesteaks edge out Dalessandro's in taste, customizability, and convenience. I just had to give Chubby's a second chance after affording their competitor the same courtesy. Like with Dalessandro's, I have to admit I was wrong. In this case, I was far too generous previously. Needless to say, my kids were restless by the time it arrived. During that time, we observed the manager denying a customer access to the restroom unless the whole table ordered food to dine in, lying that it was a rule that she was helpless to counter. That's just low and ridiculous considering that several people in her group were ordering in. The customer asked if she could order fries to go. The manager told her she must dine in. Terrible service is inexcusable, regardless who receives it. My order of the pulled pork special was inedible. There's no way to put it nicely while being truthful as a reviewer: I couldn't stomach more than the first three bites. My children tried a nibble each and their faces said it all: utter betrayal. The meat tasted burnt and sour. I've actually never had pork this bad in my life. You could buy frozen pork and throw it in a crockpot for four hours with zero seasoning and it would be far superior. The cheeseburger was chewy, we all agreed. Poor quality meat soaked in old grease. I swear it tasted like perhaps something had gone bad. The French fries shared the same sour flavor, reinforcing my idea that the oil was old and in desperate need of changing. My youngest was able to eat her grilled cheese and bag of Lay's without complaint, but she hated everything else she tried, and so did I. We had to sit and wait for fifteen minutes after the children finished to be presented with the check. The manager noticed that I had barely touched my meal and offered no comment nor did she ask for an explanation. No attempt was made to understand or rectify the tragedy that was my meal. Upon returning home all of our tummies were upset. I had to serve up chocolate milk and cookies to remove the foul aftertaste from our mouths. It's been hours and my stomach is still turning. Go across the street to Dalessandro's. Don't eat here for any reason. A person we respect, who grew up in Philadelphia, insisted that we try Chubby's, upon hearing that we were trying as many of the cheesesteak shops that we could find. Not only that, but we were instructed that we should get the pizza steak with onions and green peppers. This is the first place we've gone where we had a waitress, which isn't really the vibe that we've experienced elsewhere. While we have eaten inside many Philly cheesesteak restaurants, it's always been more order at the counter and seat yourself. I like it that way. Truthfully, as long as my beverage isn't empty, I want to be left alone while I am eating. I'd much rather return to a counter to get another drink, or to fix any errors. I like doing this on my time, instead of waiting for someone to come check on me. And, truthfully, I'm crap with carrying cash, so it's easier on me to not have to leave a tip. Because I WILL tip if there's table service of any kind. Thankfully our group had a fiver, or someone was going to have to go find an ATM. I wasn't expecting table service. And, sadly, our waitress got our order wrong and didn't come check on us, and because the place is ALL booths, we were seated in the very back and my companions were trapped in the booth by my wheelchair. If I had used any of the other booths, other patrons and the waitress would not have been able to squeeze behind me to get to the other tables, or even to the bathroom. It's a very narrow space, and I crashed into some sort of cabinet on the way out because I couldn't see it behind me as I tried to back away from the booth. When she finally did come back to see how we were doing, were were all pretty much over it. She checked her order and did admit that she hadn't put in our order correctly (we asked for onions but didn't get any, and in my opinion, the grilled onions is the most necessary part of a cheesesteak, after the cheese) but she didn't give us a discount or anything. It was an okay sandwich, but since it was a pizza steak, it really didn't measure up to what we normally order. The meat was alright, the cheesepull was nice. But again, I prefer American or whiz, and this one had provolone. None of us cleared our baskets (instead of plates). We went across the street to their competitor (which is amongst my top 3) to pick up a sandwich to ship to my boyfriend's dad in North Dakota, where we met an older woman who claimed to live in the neighborhood. She said that all the locals eat at Chubby's. This makes sense, considering it takes close to an hour to get a sandwich at Dalessandro's. I wouldn't wait that long either, if I were simply trying to satisfy a craving. But when it's a special trip/adventure the wait is expected and part of the story that you will tell others. So really, the locals aren't necessarily eating at Chubby's because it's better quality. Is it the local money that keeps Chubby's open? Maybe. I do think that they could offer a decent cheesesteak, but I also think it's interesting to know that our friend did NOT get the pizza steak, and he wasn't particularly thrilled with his sandwich either. His #1 is By George's in Reading Terminal, BTW. All told, if you're going to try as many cheesesteaks as you can in Philly, Chubby's should definitely be on your list, but be aware that it's a whole different experience. Chubbys Steaks is located in Roxborough, right across Dalessandro's. I really appreciated that Chubbys had their own parking lot. Chubbys is very American, it gives American diner aesthetics. The menu is very clear- they offer cheesesteaks, burgers, hoagies and salads. I tried the tuna salad which was very standard. It had Italian sub salad at the bottom, with 3-4 scoops of tuna, plenty of black olives, a couple of eggs. We also got the fries which were pretty good. Our family friend got the cheesesteak and thought it was really big. It seemed like the meat was kind of dry and the cheese was heavy, albeit she added the cheese whiz on top. The food wasn't bad at all but nothing special either - very American standard. I think the prices were a bit higher than expected as it gives diner vibes. The booths can use some upkeeping as well. Today my son and I did a taste test between Dalessandros and Chubby's. Let's just say Chubby's won in both of our minds. The beef flavor was just better in general. It's an obvious difference now. Dalessandros gives you more meat but it doesn't help their cause. Plus, it's just an easier ordering experience at Chubby's with the online ordering. And the atmosphere inside is just better. When I come up to this area, I'm officially changing my mind and coming here more often. read more

Let me start by saying that this place was not not our first choice but since Delassandros was closed we decided to give them a try. Our cousin is in town from Florida and wanted a cheesesteak so this was the route we went. I ordered a cheesesteak with cooper sharp, mayo and fried onions, my husband ordered a cheesesteak with wiz and our cousin ordered a cheesesteak with wiz, fried onions and mushrooms. We all wanted salt and pepper but were told we had to add our own salt and pepper. We also ordered curly fries. Our steaks came first. They were pretty packed with meat but bland, even if we added salt and pepper it would've just seasoned the top of the meat. The middle and the bottom would've been bland. The fried onions and mushrooms that were ordered were just sitting at the top. As we ate we talked and didn't notice that the fries never came until we got the bill. I brought this to the waitresses attention and she was really rude asking why are we just saying something that now it's something she has to pay for. Unfortunately when you're catching up with family you haven't seen in a while sometimes things like that happens. Why didn't she notice we never got the rest of our order. Furthermore she began to whisper to the other waitresses as the other waitress staired at our table which I thought was really rude. We had her remove the fries off of our bill, paid our bill and regardless still tipped even though she honestly did nothing to deserve it. The steak was not great and the service was terrible. First time at Chubby's. After years of hitting up Dalessandro's across the street, it felt right to give the other joint a try. At first I really didn't vibe with Chubby's. Their policies are weird, it's a dine-in, and you can't order to go and then dine-in. We put in our order as takeout and when we said we would cancel it and just order in, they were like, "no you can't do that, the order has already been placed". I really don't see how hard it is to cancel an order. I'm still giving you my money, just let me stay. It really brushed me the wrong way trying to argue with the staff on how bizarre and confusing their rules are, but thankfully, they understood we were some first timers and let us order in. The cheesesteak is actually very good. The cheese is an interesting twist and the steak is really filling. Despite some initial bumps, Chubby's was a good start with my first cheesesteak back in the city since 2020. read more
