One of the best cheesesteaks in Philly! I am from DC but was visiting family, so I found this spot and I'm glad I did. The vibe is cool, and everyone was friendly and helpful. I ordered The Paulie (their cheesesteak) and a Carmine (a spicy Italian sub). Both subs were phenomenal, but I liked The Paulie more (adding onions recommended). The bread was fresh and toasty and all of the meat was well made and generously portioned.

Immediately upon placing the order for a $16 cheesesteak I had a little buyers remorse that I was about to drop close to twenty bucks on a take out sandwich. I thought to myself that this has to be the BEST cheesesteak I've ever eaten to justify this price...spoiler alert...IT WAS! This place gets a little clout because it's affiliated with Lucky's last chance and their food has always been excellent, never wavering in quality. The affiliation also drew me into the cheesesteak because I remember on National Cheesesteak day Lucky's would add on to their menu for that day only. I remember the Luckys sandwich being great but not the best ever. Something about this version compared to the Lucky's one elevated it. The garlic butter is not overpowering. It's somehow subtle enough to notice but drastically enhances the sandwich. Normally I prefer a soft roll but the description says it's toasted roll. The toasting was barely noticeable but worked well overall. When taking the first bite it was like the moment you bite into a hot chocolate lava cake where you brain just goes berserk knowing something wonderful is happening. It's not an every day sandwich but is definitely something that can be enjoyed on a special occasion.

Lucky's strikes again with another hit... this time on a long roll! Tucked away as part of Luckys Trading Company, Sunshine Sandwich Shop operates for lunch and the weekends. You'll get a meaty sandwich whipped up in no time. By meaty, I mean the sandwich comes out heavy - like get a little workout heavy. I've had one on menu sandwich (the Carmine) and one off menu special. Loved them both and will be back for more. While most get orders for take out, there is a bit of space to eat in. Service is from the best of Lucky's staff and top notch. I had a slight issue with my order and they quickly took ownership and corrected with a full new sandwich. Crazy good service imo. Enjoy my new lunch spot as much as I do!

The Paulie reminds me of Angelo's Pizza cheesesteak, but the bread is not as toasted (very fluffy) which I don't prefer as much.

We ordered two Philly cheesesteak and one chicken cheesesteak. We were asked if we wanted "fried onions" and well it the same as grilled onions and not like an onion ring, just FYI. The chicken did not have much flavor but adding the peppers they give you it adds some and my mom enjoyed it. The cheesesteak was good too but also the steak was a bit flavorless. The sandwich is big and you need to ask to be cut in half, they just give it to you whole. It gets busy and they only accept cash. They do have an ATM machine on site if needed. Parking is on the street and not bathroom that I saw. This would be a place I come back but I'll bring some salt and pepper with me.

I let my son order and he chose "The Classic" for us to try. Since we were having dinner in a couple of hours, we decided to share. It is pricey for the size. I'm used to having it a footlong at most other places and these are more like half the size. After placing our order on the kiosk, it was ready within minutes. The Classic consists of prime rib, Cooper sharp cheese, buttery steakhouse seasoning with sautéed onions all held intact by this sesame hoagie. OMG!!! My son and I loved it!! John's Roast Pork is legendary in Philly - it's been around for decades - 96 years to be exact! I'd been there once before many years ago (couldn't remember anything about it) and thought it was time for a revisit. I got the large Roast Pork sandwich - you can see from the attached picture the 'preferred toppings' (Dad's Way) are: Mustard Raw onions Hot seeded pepper American cheese I had only the Mild Provolone cheese on mine - no mustard, raw onions or seeded pepper. I would have had cooked (caramelized) onions - but they had only raw...and American cheese was not a choice for me (I was raised on it). The pork is supposed to be 'slow roasted (7 hours) pork shoulder (pork butt)' - and it may very well be, but it reminds me of the meat that's carved off the large vertical rotisseries for gyros. It doesn't look that appealing - it's like a large sub sandwich. The pork was soft, tender and seasoned well - the roll was very good - John's had been getting its bread from Carangi Bakery. However, the bakery closed due to a fire so I'm not sure where the bread is from, unless it reopened. I finally satisfied my curiosity about John's and went to see what the sandwich was like. While it probably ranks as one of the better 'pork/steak' sandwiches in Philly, I just couldn't get excited about it.

What I didn't like is the answer she gave me when I asked if it was okay that my family grabbed an open table while I ordered food. She said, "No, you have to order food first. Once your order is placed, then you can look for an empty table". Once a table was secured and cleaned, we waited for our order. Man, it didn't disappoint. We ordered 2 French onion burgers, oh lamb Mediterranean burger, garlic and parmesan fries, and a Philly cheesesteak with grilled onions and bell peppers topped with provolone cheese. Everything was carefully prepared and delicious. I mean the burgers were enjoyed and loved by two tweens. They loved the dip that came on the side and dipped fries and their burgers in it. The Mediterranean burger was spicy and jam packed with seasoning. As for the Philly cheesesteak, Listen!!!!! Get it. The meat was tender, hero was soft (I preferred more of a toast bun) but it was fresh, and the CHEESE stole the show. Why was the cheese so thick and just stringy?! I topped it with Heinz ketchup packets. Yes, you read that right.....packets! Two of 'em did the trick. Would I go back, absolutely! Would I scout a table first, totally!!!! If you're thinking about going to Oh Brother, don't hesitate!

I was in…read moreChester for a football game, but made some time to stop by both of the city's famous Cheesesteak stands. The Original Pat's King of Steaks is located in South Philly, specifically in the Passyunk Square neighborhood. It sits at the intersection of East Passyunk, South 9th, and Wharton. The building has many different signs and lights that will let you know that you are in the correct place. Since this is in the city, parking can be somewhat tricky. There are times I have had to circle around, or get whomever I was with to drop me off and have them come back. However, sometimes I have secured street parking not too far away. This will just depend on the time of day, and really the luck of the draw, if you are able to easily locate parking. This is an outdoor stand, meaning there is no inside to enter. You will order at the counter, and food is packaged to-go. However, there are some tables surrounding the building that you can dine at. They are all under the roof overhang, so you will be somewhat protected from the elements. On this day, it was not terribly busy. I really did not have to wait in any kind of line before being able to place my order. This was around 4:00 on a Saturday in September. First, I took some time to look over the menu posted near the sidewalk. There is also a helpful guide on "how to order a steak," for those that are unfamiliar. When it was my first time here, I actually found the humorous display very helpful. I placed my order for two classic Cheesesteak Wit, made with Cheez Whiz. When ordering, you specify if you want Wit (with onion) or Wit-Out (no onion). Given that I was wanting to try the most authentic sandwich I could, I opted for the onions and the traditional Cheez Whiz. My sandwiches only took a minute or so to be ready. As stated, it was not busy, and they are able to whip up these sandwiches rather quickly. I ended up taking my sandwiches to-go, and having them for meals the next few days. They reheat well, and have good flavor. I like having the onions on it for an added texture. Pricing is not terrible. Pat's is more expensive than Geno's by $2 for the same sandwich. My total was $36 after tax for the two sandwiches, making them $18 each. You definitely are paying for the experience and the novelty that is coming to this famous corner of Philadelphia. But, this price is not out of the ballpark of other places in the area. The sandwich is a decent size, and you can definitely get two meals out of it if you are eating it by yourself. So, all that considering, it is a fair value for what you pay. It seemed like most menu items were $20 or under. FYI, they take both cash and card. The staff are quick and efficient. However, it will not be the most friendly or pleasant experience, especially if you do not know how to order. I am not saying that the experience was poor by any means, but be aware that this is not Disney World and they will not be overly kind to you at the order window. Being from Pittsburgh, I had never had a true Philadelphia Cheesesteak sandwich until a few years ago when I visited for the first time. Since that trip, I typically make it a point to stop and get a few sandwiches to take back home with me. I enjoy coming to Pat's for the atmosphere, and the true taste of Philadelphia. I recommend giving it a try at least once, just to say you have had it. Plus, the sandwiches are pretty tasty, too. I will definitely be back here on future trips to South Philly.
