My partner had been to both Murray's Deli and Hymie's Deli in Ardmore. We wanted to have lunch after an appointment, so I took a quick look on Yelp, and decided to go to Hymie's. It was packed - only a few tables were available at 12:30 on a Friday afternoon. We were immediately seated and looked over the menu. We decided to share a 1/2 Pastrami sandwich ( you can order 1/2 a sandwich ), 1/2 a Corned Beef sandwich, an order of Potato Latkes and we each had a small bowl of Chicken Matzo Ball soup. The soup was delicious - it was a little bowl with tiny shreds of carrots and chicken. The broth tasted very good, however, the matzo ball was a 'little' different. They were light and fluffy - but there was no texture or flavor at all....none. I would have thought the matzo balls would have absorbed some of the flavor from the soup, but it didn't. I finished the soup, but left the matzo ball. My partner likes pastrami over corned beef - she says it's a more 'peppery' flavor. While I probably prefer corned beef over pastrami because it's a leaner cut, my 'baseline' for pastrami is Katz's (NYC). I'm sure Katz's has great corned beef, but I've only had pastrami there - it's the best I've had. I thought my Corned Beef sandwich was excellent - it was lean, tender and very tasty. I squeeze out a little mound of mustard on my plate and dip. My partner thought her Pastrami sandwich was very good - it was also quite lean. I took a few bites of the pastrami, I thought my corned beef was tastier and had more texture. It almost seemed like they sliced the pastrami too thin. She liked her pastrami more than my corned beef - I suppose it's all a matter of individual taste. The Potato Latkes were delicious - especially with the applesauce! They were a little thicker than I might have preferred, possibly from either potato starch or matzo meal. However, there was a very nice potato taste and the thicker texture was fine. Of course, on the way out I saw a large selection of pasties and had to try a few! I got a few of the Rugelach and a Poppy Hamantash. The Rugelach were a disappointment - the interiors of all were very thick and doughy. I ate some of the exterior layers.....and left the rest. The Poppy Hamantash, on the other hand was one of the best I've had. It was by far the largest one I've ever had! As a result, there wasn't enough Mohn (poppy filling) for such a large pastry! The filling was very good as was the cookie (it was like 1/2 scone and 1/2 cookie)! Overall, Hymie's exceeded my expectations and I'll look forward to returning. read more

My whitefish salad was decent and my husband liked his sandwich. The only thing I didn't really like was the coffee, which was burnt. It's not a coffee spot, so I can't complain much. I went some months ago with a few friends for brunch, and I thought it was pretty good. I appreciated the pickle bar, which had a lot of variety and was open to refills, and the sandwich I got was good too, I think something with corned beef or pastrami. Seemed like a pretty standard Jewish-style deli, and the sides were tasty as well. One of the people at our table ordered carrot cake, which was quite large, and I got to taste some of it, which was tasty too. All the staff there were very friendly too, and it's fairly loud in there like your typical local deli. I would consider going back again if I'm in the area or some friends are going. read more

Diners like this are incredibly rare and I'm thankful we found this one! The food here is INCREDIBLE and of the highest quality. It is equal to best of the best Jewish deli that can usually only be found in Manhattan. The authentic and generous portions are impressive including fresh herring and sour cream, lean pastrami, corned beef, fresh bagels with nova lox, along with a great pickle bar. Also definitely order a delicious vanilla egg cream to drink! The staff is efficient, friendly and they go above and beyond. The deli is high paced and you usually do not have a long wait, however if you do it is well worth it. I enjoyed the Hebrew "High Maintenance" t shirts so much that I bought one. A few reasons: a corned beef sandwich at Hymie's is about half the price, you don't have to deal with the crowds Katz's attracts AND when I want a sandwich, I want a sandwich! (Yesterday I had a hankering for Jewish deli.) As reported last time, Hymie's corned beef is lean. Perhaps too lean. I also prefer thicker slices. Other than that, no complaints. The sandwich is generously stuffed, resulting in a second meal for both me and my husband. If you order fries, specify crisp and 'steak cut'. (Last time they bordered on limp.) Coleslaw is creamy and delicious. And let's not forget the pickle bar, gratis when you dine in. You may find other goodies on the bar; yesterday it was macaroni salad. Hostess-very rude, no smile, barely spoke up to us. we prayed she wasn't our waitress too At the table -trash on the floor from previous diner(s) Our waitress was super nice. We were staying at an Airbnb down the street and decided to stop in here for breakfast. I don't normally like pastrami, but figured when in Rome and this was excellent. The bagels have really gone down hill lately. No flavor at all. New York Bagels on City Line are way better. Had no seeded rye bread for take out. Really? Baked goods are entirely too sweet and the predominant taste is sugar and cheap refined flour. Also prices are ridiculoous. Almost $20 for a corn beef special (!). About $13 for 6 bagels. A pound of lox with a half dozen bagels cost about $80. Really like the soups but the take out soup prices are up to $15 and the cabbage soup barely had any beef in it. We've driven past Hymie's for years. This is our first time stopping in. There's a small market on the right and the restaurant on the left. They serve breakfast all day. We chose sandwiches and visited the Pickle Bar. Our server was helpful and friendly. She even cut me the end piece of the strawberry shortcake because I wanted extra icing. The potato salad was delicious. We were able to get a parking spot in front at a meter. We will be back to try more of the delicious options on the menu. read more

Horrible service. I have come here serval times, and I cannot seem to get an order that is correct. Ordered a turkey Ruben 3rd time this has happened. Made wrong! I'm totally disappointed. Asked for a Ruben no kraut.. I end up with a hot turkey sandwich!! No! Spoke with Dominic, and he had no explanation nor a fix in the moment as they were closing.. telling me to come in tomorrow. Always a good time at Hymies, stopped in with my dad for lunch. We ordered two sandwiches the yellby which was beef briskets with au jus and I had the Cornbeef special with slaw and fries. Our waitress was Kim, she was a pleasure as I think she waited on me before. She told us we could help ourselves to the pickle bar. She also gave us a sample of the cabbage beef soup which was tasty but the fries won the choice. It's hard not to look at all the desserts in this place, I just try to stay focused and pay and leave lol, one day I'll get some treats. I'll definitely be back soon. read more

I have been a great customer at Hymies with deliveries. I was surprised the menu was updated and not user friendly, at all. Also, the fabulous descriptions of the selections are gone. When I called and asked to speak with the manager, he could care less. Very bad customer service. And ...... since then I tried to order 3 additional times, again nothing upgraded with any descriptions. So, I ordered at other local places. I have been a good customer at least $39.00 per order. We came to Hymie's during a visit to St. Joe's. Very solid deli. I had pastrami and chopped liver. Others had various sandwiches and salads. Everybody liked their food a lot. The atmosphere is crowded and frenzied just as it should be. The food is really, really good, just half a step behind the greatest deli's in New York. Might be too high a standard but there it is. I have been eating at Hymie's for twenty years. My most recent visits, especially those in the last couple years, have led me to think they have lost a step or two from what it was. Food is sometimes inconsistent: a sandwich like a corned beef special is made the way you remember it one visit, and then the next is smaller or the meat isn't as good. A recent turkey special was very chewy and the turkey seemed almost pink. This at a place that usually makes turkey for sandwiches so good it melts in your mouth. It just wasn't close to that. The soups and pickles remain amazing and a highlight. The other issue is service. I realize places cry that hiring is harder now. But the waitstaff seems to have had a big turnover and I find more often I have to repeat my order after they just took it, and don't wrote it down for some reason, or the order has an error when brought to table. Formerly you had a team of servers who never missed a beat. Some of this might be generational, I don't know. It's still worth going to Hymie's but at their price point they need to step it up again. read more

This place just never disappoints. No frills and the ambiance is like a different kinda diner... with a deli/pastry store on the side (p.s. order some cookies or salads - they are yummy). The waitresses are lovely and the food is solid. We have come here more than a few times and it never ceases to please me. The wait can be hit or miss - you either get in immediately or have to wait - but the wait is worth it. In my opinion you need to have the pastrami sandwich or the corned beef sandwich, I've had both. Most places that serve this type of meat give you a lot of fat - this place, it's very lean and juicy and just amazing. Sliced to order. Order it on Rye and enjoy. They have a few specials like with Russian dressing and coleslaw. I've tried it all- fabulous. If you want Hymies I recommend going there and having a sit down meal. Maybe pick up is better I cannot speak to that but do not order delivery. I probably ordered four times for delivery and never again. This last time the hot pastrami was not hot, the seeded bagel was hard enough to break a tooth and my hoagie had absolutely no dressing like lettuce tomatoes on it despite my instructions. Four of us dined here for lunch today. We were so excited for a great meal and ended up very disappointed. To start, the waitress told us the bagel platter for 2 people would be enough food for 3 of us as long as we added an extra bagel. It definitely was not enough fishes. She also got one of the bagel orders wrong, two of the fishes wrong on the platter and forgot one of our beverages. Even when we added a 1/4 lb of another fish to supplement she got that wrong as well. Also, the bagels did not taste fresh....we all agreed they were very chewy and actually hard to swallow. In addition, the fish portions were small. To compare, Ben & Irv's gives you twice as much kippered salmon for the same price platter. Do yourself a favor and go to Ben & Irv's in Huntingdon Valley, or Pumpernick's or Moish & Itzy's. All are far superior. read more
