After seeing commercials for margaritas on TV, I was certainly in the mood for one and what better place to get one than a Mexican restaurant. My roommate and I decided to try out Chubby's, since we've heard great things and we live so close I can't believe I've never been here yet before. First things first, they don't sell alcohol here. I was a bit disappointed that I couldn't get my refreshing margarita, so definitely keep this in mind if you're looking to enjoy one with your Mexican food on a nice night outside. Despite this disappointment, we decided to stay and try out the food. This place is quick because you order at the register and then pick you're own place to sit and they bring out the food to you. The inside is small, but it's big enough that there was plenty of seating on a Friday night. There's a few tables outside so make sure to choose this option if it's a warm night. There's a lot of taco options here, so I figured this is what they're known for so I must try them for my first visit. I chose the Baja tilapia and the grilled shrimp tacos. Be sure to make it a combo if you're hungry for dinner, because this adds rice, beans, chips, and a drink for just $2.99 more so it's really worth it. They have a salsa bar to go along with the chips, so check this out and try out a few of their salsas. They were all very good! I would highly recommend the Baja tilapia taco. I liked this one much better than the grilled shrimp. The tacos were packed with fish, and surprisingly very filling. The fish was certainly flavorful. The chipotle mayo sauce was on both of my tacos and was really good. No complaints about the Baja tilapia, but the grilled shrimp almost had too much sauce and pico that it made the tortilla super soggy (or this specific tortilla was just not cooked enough). The second I picked it up to try to eat it like a taco, everything fell through the middle of the flour tortilla and turned into a huge mess on my plate. I was pleased with my first experience here at Chubby's. The tacos were good and the prices were fair. I would say it's not the best Mexican I've tried in the area. This is a great place to get street tacos. We got tacos to go, but will be back to dine in. They have a full bar and a cool atmosphere. They are quick, too. The combos are an awesome deal - 2 or 3 tacos with rice, beans, chips, and a drink for under $10! And the tacos are tasty! I love that they wrap them in 2 tortillas to make them sturdier. Ordered Togo , clearly a mistake . They forgot two beef tacos and the quesadilla was stuffed into a box with all the tomatoes and lettuce on top , so soggy by the time I got home it was not edible ( 7 minutes away . ) The char-grilled chicken tacos where good even thou I asked for lettuce and cheese only they came with cilantro and onions as well so my wife couldn't eat them . First time coming down in a couple of years, and I can't tell you how much I've been wanting to go back to Chubby's. There are so many perks to coming here, plenty of room to sit, lots of TVs if you'd like to watch a sporting event, attentive staff that will provide great customer service, and of course, how could I forget about the food?! The menu is easy to navigate. My personal recommendation is - it depends on how hungry you are. Very hungry? Get the burrito. Somewhat hungry? Go for the nachos, and add some protein like chicken or steak. Feel like mixing it up? Order a taco or two. The quesadillas are also another good option. The chips and salsa are complementary with your order, and the salsas are delicious and cater to your level or heat tolerance (from mild to very, very hot/spicy). Great for a quick dinner. Awwww yeah. Chubby's. A hope valley area staple. The burritos are really good, the tacos come in a wide variety and are (mostly) excellent. They recently moved to the old Bandito's building in the same shopping complex, and since then a couple new pros and cons have popped up. Pros: MUCH bigger space, you can actually sit multiple families with screaming kids and NOT feel like you're in the fifth circle of Hell A BAR! honest-to-goodness- bar in the place separate from kids (see previous pro) The have one of those check-in kiosks where you can free stuff (Mrs. V has a free burrito coming her way next time we go) Cons: Prices have increased SIGNIFICANTLY Portions are noticeably smaller Overall still love the place. I went here with my husband on a Friday night and placed an order to-go. The person taking our order had a rude attitude and continually rolled her eyes at us as well as someone ordering over the phone. I ordered the chubbychangas with carnitas and smothered in chili. My husband ordered two spicy tinga chicken tacos and a Baja fish taco. The order was complete within ten minutes so that was good. My chubbychanga was pretty good, maybe 3.5 out of 5 stars. However, my husband said the chicken tacos lacked any flavor and the fish taco had a very strong fish odor and taste (usually a sign the fish has gone bad). He ate all three tacos and within minutes, had to run to the restroom and be sick. I cannot imagine why a restaurant would serve fish that has gone that bad. Maybe something happened during the move, but the food was awful! I ordered a rice & bean burrito w/lettuce & tomato. Alas, I forgot to bring my electron scanning microscope and was therefore unable to find any tomato. The burrito wrap and all ingredients were barely lukewarm. The guacamole was dreadful - the main flavor note was salt and I'm pretty sure the green color came from peas - no avocado here. I've been coming to Chubby's for years, and I'm so glad they expanded into this new location! You can still order food at the counter like always, but sitting at the bar is so much better! Cold beer, tacos, and sports on the TVs are a match made in heaven. Also, Morgan, the bartender, is fantastic! The service is always so attentive and personal and he makes a killer margarita! Came in while it wasn't busy literally two people were ahead of me in line. It starts to fill up and the longer the like the longer I'm waiting. I don't mind waiting until people who come in after me get there food before me. Wait was super long on top of that food was cold and missing items. And the only way to handle it is about as unladylike as you imagine it to be. Following the advice of yelps I'd steered clear of the tacos, but I may give them a shot next time around in order to keep my jaw from permanently unhinging. Do try the pupusas. They're not on offer too many non-taqueria places 'round here and they were pretty tasty. Like other reviewers have noted, the salsa bar is kick-butt good. Especially the guacatilla -- some magical combination of avocado and hot sauce. Come during peak dinner time, and you may find yourself fighting for a table; but get it to go and you'll have to skip the salsa (or risk precariously perching it on the driver's seat between your legs) since they don't have covered containers for them. read more

I did not fully appreciate the greatness that is the burrito until I discovered Chubby's on Ninth Street and, lo, here it is now in my own backyard! Their vegetarian menu is extensive and, having tried each item on the list at least once, I can attest to its deliciousness. When I'm absolutely starvin' marvin---and pretending I don't have an intolerance to gluten---my go-to item is the spinach burrito. I've never experienced a tortilla like this. I'm pretty sure they make them in heaven. This is by far the largest and most delicious burrito I've ever encountered in my life. It really puts Cosmic Cantina's burritos to shame. When I'm being good to my stomach, I opt for a couple of $2 tacos: the vegetarian rice and bean is pretty good, but the tofu one is a bit bland to me (and I'm a big-time fan of tofu and cauliflower). Where it's at: the chile relleno tacos stuffed with mushrooms or spinach. Drool. And, oh, man, and their tortilla chips are just aces. Whatever seasoning they use is spicy and garlicky and nothing short of fantastic. Their salsa bar brings me great joy. The guacatillo and salsa verde are my favorites. My husband swears by the one called "Chubby's salsa". He'll actually start talking about it---like he's reminiscing about the good days he had with an old friend---when we haven't been to Chubby's in a while. But, be warned: they'll burn your mouth off. In the best way possible, of course. They have neat Mexican pops and a few bottled beers for sale, too. They also recycle and use corn utensils and recycled napkins. I love this place. Oooh, and if you manage to not stuff yourself silly (i.e., when you choose tacos over a burrito, heh heh), I highly recommend the sopapillas. I was in the neighborhood with a loud and empty stomach and remembered that Chubby's had come highly recommended by fellow Yelper, Alison S. A couple of tacos are exactly what would hit the spot, I thought. I was not disappointed. The menu was extensive and lots of things seemed enticing, but I chose the tofu taco and the rice and beans taco. They were both equally substantial and delicious. I didn't even have much room for the small side of chips. The vegetables in the tofu taco were nicely grilled and quite flavorful. The rice and beans taco was full of tasty beans and covered in lettuce and yummy cheese, which I distributed between the two tacos. I enjoyed the mild Guacatillo salsa as an accompaniment to both chips and tacos. The girl at the counter was smiley and helpful and the atmosphere was clean and simple. I drove 5 minutes down 751 to Woodcroft and started searching for this Mecca of Mexican. If you eat burritos on the regular basis, you will never want to go anywhere again. If you do chose to fight your taste buds and go somewhere else you will be very disappointed. Course 1- Burrito w/Spicy Carne Asada, add sour cream side of chips and queso. Let me tell you the queso isn't runny, actually STICKS TO YOUR CHIP, and makes you want to take a 10 minute awesome break in-between each mouth-watering bite. AWESOME CHEESE DUDE. The burrito is so different. Its made from a tortilla that TASTE GOOD? That never happens! Usually you go to a place that steams a stale old flour tortilla and then makes your burrito so fast the moisture makes it stick together. These guys just have a huge tortilla that tastes amazing. The quality of the ingredients is second to none and I loved the way the store is kinda tucked back in Woodcroft. You guys need to try this place ASAP so you can stop shorting yourself when you go to Moe's or Cosmic, or even Bandido's. So my first experience with Chubby's was at the beer festival, so let's face it, I was predisposed to like them - anything you eat between lots of free beer tastes better, am I right? That said, I've been back to Chubby's in Woodcroft (and on Miami) several times now, and the food's always REALLY good, especially for the price. I recommend the tacos or the chimichanga, preferably with barbacoa or maybe carnitas. Don't forget lots of chips - you need something to eat salsa on. Those who like avacado, as far as I can tell, all go for the guacatillo, while I'm a fan of the chile arbol - it's almost creamy, not like a standard salsa, and has the perfect amount of heat. One more thing - the horchata's MUCH better than that at say, Torero's. The one downside to the Woodcroft location is that there's almost nowhere to sit - dont' go with more than 4 people, as there's one table in the restaurant that seats 6. read more

I can't believe I've never been to Chubby's before now! I visited Chubby's on a Saturday afternoon and had a hard time getting a table. Luckily, the food comes out so fast that people weren't occupying tables too long. I thought the variety of tacos on the menu was great and noticed that they even have some creative vegetarian options We decided to go with a Baja Tilapia Taco (special of the day), Carnitas Taco, Grilled Chicken Taco, and Tinga Chimichanga. This was more than enough food for 2 people to share! The food was great, the salsa bar was great (some very interesting salsas), and the service was great. I love this place. When I lived in Durham I went to the 9th St. location pretty regularly. Now that I'm in Chapel Hill, I go to this one. I probably end up here at least once a month. There have been times where I've been twice in one week. It's good, cheap, filling. I love the guacatillo salsa. I've tried a good sampling of what they offer. I highly recommend the tacos and the gorditas. The burritos are *huge* and filling. I can only eat half. Same with the nachos. My favorite taco was the al pastor, but the past few times I've been it's been really fatty so I need to find a new favorite. I like the Chubbychanga, but don't bother getting it Smothered. The chili is super bland, so you just end up with a soggy mess. I'm an AZ transplant and this is the closest thing I've found to replace my beloved Nico's (a 24 hour Mexican fast food place). I think I already wrote a review for the location on Miami Blvd in RTP, but I gotta show some love to my home location right around the corner from my APT in Woodcroft. Great hole-in-the-wall Mexican spot. All their food tastes very fresh and authentic. I don't think I've gotten anything there I didn't like (which is mostly all the variations on the tacos.) Every taco is awesome. The seafood tacos are probably my favorite, especially the tuna. I guess my only gripe would be the one time I got their burrito, I thought the tortilla was too thick and chewy, and it kinda detracted from the fillings inside. But seriously, if you go there, stop playin' around. Get you some tacos. Trust. They're gonna be great. Also I can't write this without mentioning my favorite part of Chubby's. Salsa. Bar. I really like Chubby's Tacos as a convenient place for take-out, and occasionally dining in. The Hope Valley location is on my way home from work, and the location of choice. The food is great and relatively cheap. I really like the pork tacos and beef tacos. I have also tried the fish tacos, and the beef burrito, which is huge. There are a variety of salsa's available, from mild to the insanely hot habanero salsa. The restaurant is kind of small, but often there are a few tables available if you prefer to dine in. Chubby's. It's one of my newest "duh, whad'we eat tonight" joints. Proximity is a factor. The terrific, filling grilled tuna tacos are another. Price is great too, two of us are stuffed for less than $30. I've tried a lot of things here. Some things, like the weekly specials, are interesting. Some, like the "side of queso," are a waste ... I can buy that at Costco and microwave it, I don't need them to sell it to me at 200% markup. Burritos are good, but lots of places ("Welcome to Moe's...!!" ad nauseam) have "burritos." (Baja Burrito on Western is my favorite workplace lunch.) But the grilled tuna is relatively unique to here. (snap) Hey, I have to try it in a burrito some time.... -- Oh, sorry, I'm back. But the salsa bar is a big reason to try Chubby's. Several good salsas, including a "guacatillo" that is ... well hard to describe, other than "fantastic." Think good guacamole thinned out a bit with tomatillo salsa. Yummy results, on a chip or on your taco. Yes, you can buy 8 oz bottles to take home. One of us is averse to onions, so the grilled tuna tacos with pico de gallo have to be ordered special, with just tomato and cilantro, and guess what -- it rocks.
