I found myself in Durham and very hungry. There were a number of options and I went with Chubby's. I'm all about tacos! Who isn't? It's a cool spot with ample tables and a nice bar. I opted for the counter service. It was 5:00 somewhere, but I wasn't ready for a drink just yet. A nice, soft-spoken, young woman took my order. I went for the #3 combo that had 3 tacos; carnitas, ground beef, and chicken tinga with rice and either refried or black beans. I went with black. The woman gave me a basket of warm tortilla chips to start. I found a seat and filled my drink and visited the salsa station. There were about 10 choices ranging in flavors and heat. I choose the mild verde and one that was only labeled a daily variety. While I was getting my salsas together my food was delivered to my table. Nice and fast! I started with the black beans which were average. I felt they needed more flavor. I moved on to the rice which turned out to be cold. So far things weren't going well. On to the tacos. I'll preface by saying I'm not the biggest fan of corn tortillas, but I'll eat them. That's my failure for not checking if there was an option. Each taco was wrapped with two tortillas which is cool since they tend to be thin. I started with the carnitas. I love carnitas!! Unfortunately it lacked flavor, although the meat was nice and juicy, and tasted very fresh. Next was the ground beef. There was definitely more flavor here. It was above average, but not by much. Finally, chicken tinga! I really love chicken tinga and was really hoping not to be disappointed. By this point I had enough of the tortillas so I ate the ingredients with a fork. The chicken was juicy, tasted fresh, and had a nice kick to it. This was definitely the highlight of the meal. If I have the chance to stop in again, I will. I like to give places a second chance. Next time I'll check if there's an option for a hard shell and will definitely get the chicken tinga, and I may even give the carnitas another shot. read more

I was pretty sad when I saw that Chubby's had closed the 9th St location in Durham and some other ones, but I was glad to see this location in Hope Valley Shopping Center was still thriving when I was in Durham to look at a car today. Chubby's serves up some pretty authentic tasting street-style tacos, along with fajitas, chimichangas, flautas and taquitos. They have a salsa bar with about ten choices from mild to habanero. This location has more of a sports bar feel, with a dozen big screens around the room with various sports programs on them. You order at the counter and they bring the food to the tables which consists of a few booths, regular tables and bar seating. They have a full bar with several draft beers on tap and creative cocktails. I had the spicy sampler combo with Tinga Chicken and Carne Asada tacos, rice and black beans, with chips and a drink which $9 and change. Both tacos had double corn tortillas, meat, onions and cilantro and weren't skimpy on the filling. The Spanish rice was pretty good for a change and the black beans were much tastier than the average canned pinto mush that most places serve. Really glad this Chubby's location has survived whatever issues the other ones faced. Hope to make it back thru again soon. read more

This is probably a one and done for me. I tried the chicken, veggie and tofu tacos. I wanted the portobello mushroom but they were out. The chicken was okay especially if you load it with guacamole and salsa but the cauliflower tofu was terrible. The veggies tasted like they came out of frozen bag, very watery with just sliced up tofu. It would have been better if they were cut into smaller pieces and grilled with seasonings but I couldn't even finish it. My husband had a pork, fish and carne asada. They were out of his first choice of shrimp. He ate them but neither of us thought it was a good meal. Fortunately the prices are great and you can eat a lot for a little here if you're willing to settle on taste. The salsas are a plus, varied and delicious but it doesn't make up for what's underneath. The guacamole was really good and the chips were perfectly crisp, fresh without being over salted. Definitely stands out as one of the better chips I've tried. Overall, disappointing but I'm glad I tried it out. read more

I've been wanting to try this place for a while and headed to the location on 9th St only to find out it moved here. Not to be defeated, I trekked over. It's definitely an upgrade in space. The old location looked small and likely only had a few tables. This place had ample seating and a full bar which might serve as a good hangout spot for people who live nearby. I went for tacos so that's what I got. I ordered a carnitas, beef, chicken and shrimp taco. I really just wanted to see which would be best so I bit each one. Both the carnitas and chicken tacos were excessively dry. Each have like 3 ingredients total so the meat has to be amazing but it fell very short. I IMMEDIATELY needed water after each of those bites. The beef taco was ok, pretty ordinary and nothing to rave over. The shrimp taco was the best but only because it was slathered in two different sauces. So really, the sauce taco was good. Overall, I was disappointed because I had high hopes for tacos from a place with "tacos" in their name. If I try it again, it'll be on someone else's dime. read more

I really enjoy Chubby's food in general, but the consistency of this location makes me a bit sad. Their salsa is arguably the best part of of a good Chubby's experience, but this location is very hit or miss for my favorite one, the arbole. Sometimes it's thick and spicy, but more often than not it is thin and mild tasting at best. I think I may stick to going to the Lake Boone Trail location and try here in a few months. read more

I ordered Burrito Kids meal and it was plentiful. I had it for lunch and I could have saved some for dinner as well. I had it with their lemonade and iced tea (some sort of mix) and it was hands down one of the best beverages I've ever had! The only issue I had were their rice and beans. The black beans were mushy and kind of dry and their rice had no flavor. But it is pretty easy to overlook this when I still got a decent meal for less than $6. I love tacos. Little $2-$3 tacos. You eat two, you're DONE. If you feel the same way, and live near one of these little gems, this is your place. Granted, this is not some hallmark for authenticity or a super fresh, local (over)priced joint like Carrburritos,* with bright, happy lettuce, but they have some tacos that are more creative than those from a truck.** While I do wish they could ditch the lettuce and rock out the cabbage on our tacos, that's really my only complaint about the place. They're nice, fast, offer about 7 salsas, have weekly off-menu specials and have homemade fruity drinks on tap for the non-soda drinker. I'm totally a fan; actually reminds me of California... *I love Carrburritos, this just isn't the same thing. And there is only one "Carrburritos", this is a small chain as I understand it. **The trucks around here have arguably better hours for taco consumption. Okay let's just put it out there, the food here is great. The food is a damn 5 for sure. No doubt. The building itself makes me give it a 4. This is a great place for take-out and if you want to dine in there's a few tables for that as well. However the place is a bit beat up and all the seats have been ripped up and taped back together. It's not comfy to sit on at all. But back to the food! Tacos are so yummy. The chorizo is tender and yet cripsy, heaps of onion and cilantro top it off. Add some sauce on there and you're golden. The seafood tacos are amazing, the fish and shrimp come out so crispy, hot, and flaky with cabbage in a sauce akin to cole slaw. They have a little sauce bar with various sauces that range in spicyness. Unfortunately I'm afraid to show my face at this place again because on my way I out accidentally threw our trash in a trash can without a trash bag...right as the girl was coming up to put a new bag in. I wish I could give Chubby's 5-stars like many folks, but it just doesn't live up to my Mexican "mom and pop's" place down my old street in San Diego. Hard not to be biased, when you are Mexico's neighbor. But I will say, I was happy to see carne asada tacos available on the menu. I haven't found anything with carne asada since I got to Durham. I was so thrilled, I ordered 2 spicy carne asada tacos. They were very spicy alright, but my first thought was... Where's the sour cream, and guacamole!? Do I have to pay extra for that? The tacos were good, but dry as a result. I do plan to go back and try something else on their menu. I've given this restaurant a few chances but it never improves. The quality, taste, and value are all lacking. I have not given it a review before because I know it's a local business and they're trying. But tonight prompted me to leave a review and to never visit again. My husband and I were in the mood for a margarita and after no success at the pub next door, we thought perhaps Chubby's would be the logical spot to get a good margarita. When we got to the front door, we could see people at the bar, but I thought we should check the restaurant hours just to be sure we had enough time for a drink. There was no sign by the door so we walked in. The bartender and all the people at the bar looked at me and the bartender said "Hey, we're closed." And people began to laugh and someone shouted "check the sign!" over the uproar. I immediately apologized and left and felt so ashamed. There was a more professional way to handle that situation on Chubby's part. First, if you're closed, lock the front doors! Second, please install a sign with establishment hours at all entrances! And third, please be courteous to patrons, even after hours. Needless to say, this was the final straw. read more

I love the Chubby's Franchise, but this location was the absolute worst. To be frank, I got horrible food poisoning from this spot -- I mean, practically mess your pants sick. First off, the menu is completely different from the older version. I thought the brand changed to Guacamaya, but I still see Chubby's everything (except the original menu items). There used to be a super easy to read AND order burrito menu, but now it's all hidden. I ordered the fajitas with steak and my husband ordered the Chubbychunga with chicken. When we were served our plates, I was super shocked at how small the portions have gotten. I was also stunned that the "basket" of chips we once used to get was now replaced with a tiny little container. The "steak" in my dish consisted of tiny little pieces of super fried mystery meat, that tasted nothing like steak. The veggies were cooked well, but everything lacked flavor. I used 3 salsas (green verde, mild, and orange house) to try to spice up my dish, which sorta worked. My husband's chubbychunga lacked flavor and the meat was super dry. Stopped by Chubbys tonight to try a new spot in South Durham. I am constantly trying to find new hidden finds in South Durham instead of making the trip to downtown or Chapel Hill every time I want to go out to eat. Chubbys had the novelty feel of a hidden gem with the walk up counter for ordering, paper plates and equal balance of dine in or take out. With a menu variety including flautas, tacos, burritos, quesadillas, and tortas, there was a little bit of everything for Mexican fans. I went for two tacos and made it a combo (great prices) where you get chips, beans, rice, and a drink on the side. The chips were a nice crunchy and salty and with the combo of their salsa bar gave a great start that I was looking for. Go for the Chubbys house salsa for a nice medium heat or the salsa verde for a milder palate. The tacos themselves were a little heavy, carnitas was purely meat and tortilla, while the Baka shrimp had much more flavor with a sauce that is also served on the other seafood options. Tacos were decent but not the best I have ever had, may have gone better with a margarita. Too bad no alcohol is served. Won't be a regular but will keep it in mind for my lazy dinners! read more

I just realized I have yet to write a review on my beloved Chubby's! My son and I frequent this place at least once a week, and trust me when I say, we'd eat here more if I allowed it. Every time we go the service is quick and efficient. The food is fresh and they give you big portions. And their salsa bar, I just can't say enough about. The variety is hands down the best around. Only drawback is the fact they don't serve alcohol at this location. So many times I've thought how nice it'd be to have a cold beer with the always awesome Barbacoa or Carnitas taco. And yes, I always get one of each. Their quesadillas are huge and so very good too. Can't rave enough about this place, if you're in the area you have to stop by! I would give Chubby's a 2.5, but I'm rounding up because of the horchata. I've had two tacos here before - the spicy chicken one and the beef carnita - and they were just alright. I got the one with pineapple this time, which a friend recommended, and it was decent. However, still definitely not something I would go out of my way for; if I'm going to 9th St, I might as well to go the Vietnamese place next door. Or International Delights. Or any of the other eateries around here. I got the fried ice cream because it was their special, and it was also decent. Then again, I don't know what I was expecting. =/ However, one of my friends got the horchata (I've wanted to try horchata for AGES and I haven't been to a place that sells it - weird, huh?) and it was really good. I've been here a couple times with friends both for drinks and for dinner/lunch. I love hanging out at the bar, the bartender is super friendly and sweet and they make really good drinks. I ordered a margarita and it tasted so good and fresh. They are also decently priced. I've tried a few of the tacos and had the enchiladas and the seafood ones are pretty good. I just don't like the corn tortillas that they use, something about them doesn't really taste right. I do love the chips that they give you with every order though, the seasoning that they use on them is so delicious. I just wish they were more evenly seasoned or that they let you season them yourself. I ordered two tacos for a late lunch/early dinner. The chicken taco was fine, but not distinctive in any way. I also ordered a spicy carne asada taco, which tasted gamey and was left unfinished as I left. The cashier was unable to tell me what made the spicy carne asada taco spicy. All of the meat was clearly cooked well in advance of my order. Neither taco was hot and they were delivered to my table with 45 seconds of my order. Came for a quick lunch break with some coworkers. I'm not from Durham so I'm very appreciative that they took me to Chubby's!! The restaurant is located in a shopping center tucked in with other stores and restaurants. I always get plantains as a sign of how authentic a place is and i was pleasantly surprised! The tacos were small, like the palm of your hand. I had the Baja fish that didn't have a whole lot of flavor to it. The fish was also fried. I also had the guacamole that i could tell was home made because of how fresh it tasted, but it was lacking in a kick of sorts. Too much avocado not enough spice and flavor. The seasoning on their chips are great and they have vegetarian options which i appreciated. My friend got the tofu nachos and devoured the whole thing which was a good sign. My favorite dish was the plantains. Overall the vibe of the place was kind of confusing, they were blasting country music which i thought was weird for an authentic place.
