Anyway, once you order at the counter, it's pretty much self serve insofar as getting drinks, and helping yourself to the salsa bar, but they do bring the food to your table. They also give you a small container of warm chips for salsa after you pay for your order. Don't know if you can get another round or not. I ordered the shredded beef enchiladas with rice and beans. I have been going to Chubby's since 2015. Chubby's has always been my go-to--so much that when my friends visited from Austin, TX looking for yummy Mexican food, I suggested we go to Chubby's. Unfortunately, our experience this evening was absolutely not the Chubby's I used to frequent and it makes me so sad. I am not sure if it was just a weird night (trivia night), but ordering was confusing, the once thick and flavorful queso tasted and looked to be powdered cheese mixed with water, the meat didn't taste fresh, and the beans in my taco were rancid and spoiled. I couldn't even eat it. I also waited almost 20 minutes to even be acknowledged to order a margarita at the bar and eventually gave up entirely. It wasn't the bartender's fault though. They had that poor guy making all the drinks for a packed trivia night AND expediting orders/running all over the restaurant. I really hope things turn around. :( read more

It does appear to be very kid friendly, there were tons of families when I went with friends on a Friday. I use to go to Chubby's all the time. I made a point of going often during the pandemic, in part because I wanted them to survive. I don't live near here any more, so I was happy to have an opportunity to get one of my old favorites: the tinga nachos. Got there about 8:20, ordered, and was told "we're not serving nachos because we might run out of chips. At the same time, someone ran out three baskets to a table, so presumably if I'd asked for tacos I'd have gotten chips to go with them. Now obviously, that's their right. But it made me feel like Chubby's has joined the list of businesses that either forgot how to take care of customers, or who just can't be bothered any more. The staff is great and placing an order is super simple! However, the food is very subpar. The tacos are like 1/3 filled and they double wrap in corn tortillas to make the lack of flavor. The Al pastor taco did have a bit of flavor, but was EXTREMELY oily. The grilled shrimp taco contained three baby shrimps and was covered in a mayo sauce. They've got a salsa bar with varying heat levels from totally mild to habanero type heat. They also have a kids menu for the children. The service was also very fast. We were craving cheap Mexican food, and this hit the spot! My husband got the Chubby Changa with Tinga Chicken and loved it. I got loaded nachos with black beans (you can't see the cheese in the picture but I promise they were cheesy as nachos should be under the toppings)! You can also add one of their fillings (plenty of vegetarian options) but I went without. Nachos are one of my guilty pleasures, so I enjoy trying them at different places. I was pleasantly surprised with these for the $5 price. I added some hot sauce for a little kick. We also grabbed a quesadilla (made it meal) and side of queso to try. Oh man, my last review does NOT do Chubby's justice [and yes, I'm still calling them Chubby's!] Tonight I ordered the grilled shrimp tacos and the spicy carne asada taco, wow! Flavorful, CHEAP, delicious salsa bar and you get free chips with every order. The building itself is dingy and the seating is sparse but service is good and hey, they've even got patio seating! When they make the "official" name change (from Chubby's Tacos to Guacamaya Fresh Mex) they will ALSO make a building change, across the Woodcroft shopping center and neighbor to Yamazushi Japanese Cuisine). I think with the building change, it will confirm this location as not only a four star for food, but a place you want to spend an extended amount of time, dress nicely for and possibly even order a drink. I want to add a disclaimer that I am not Hispanic and do not know what true "authentic" Mexican food is. All I know is that this stuff was delicious and fit the bill for what I assume is 'real' Mexican food. I have loved Chipotle but have never really thought that was 'real,' and so have been on the search for something similar to a Taqueria I used to love going to when I lived in San Francisco. That said, this was really great. My husband got a chicken taco and a caritas taco, both of which he said were wonderful. I got a caritas flauta, and I absolutely loved it! The quality of that pork was perfectly balanced between meaty and just slightly greasy/fatty. The sides of rice and beans complemented the meal very well as well, and the chips that came with our combos were well made. The building is an inornate location in its shopping square, sandwiched between a dominos and an Italian place. Seating is casual and not terribly spacious, though not cozy by any means, and when we were there the line to order was almost out the front door. There is outdoor seating as well. My one complaint is more about the building than the food. There seemed to be flies everywhere, indoors and out. We ate outdoors and so we kind of expected that, but they were noticeable indoors as well. More annoying than anything to spend the majority of your meal waving your hand over your food to keep them off. Would definitely order the food again to fill that Mexican food craving, but will probably order to go. read more

Love the new location and the new larger space! It's clean and organized. There is a new addition of a bar area and plenty of outdoor seating. The prices are SUPER CHEAP and the food is DELISH!!!! Check out the salsa bar. They have different salsa options each week. This is a great go to place for a nice date, dinner, meeting or lunch. Bring the family. This is the first time I visited the new location, but I had been to the other spot a handful of times. They really did a nice job inside compared to the tiny spot they were in before. This is just an order at the counter or bar spot. I like their burritos and taco salad. I usually opt for the fajita chicken in mine. The burritos are gigantic! If you are dining in, they give you chips...and I like all the salsa bar options they offer. The green salsa and medium are my go to ones. I also love their horchata. I really enjoyed my trip to Chubby's Tacos and am actually a bit torn for giving a 3 star review. I typically reserve a 4 or 5 star for an outstanding experience to include atmosphere, service, freshness of ingredients, menu variety, cleanliness, and obviously the taste of food. The atmosphere at Chubby's is not anything to write home about. It isn't cutesy, it isn't authentic, it isn't posh, it isn't upscale. It's very very basic with little thought into the overall design. That being said, the queso and tacos at Chubby's really hit the spot when I had the craving. Moving on. Our tacos and queso arrived so quickly, we barely had two minutes to taste test all of the awesome salsas we picked out from the salsa bar (8 options!). Not mad. They had all the appropriate street taco fixings available and everything was fresh. I thought the tacos were a little on the pricey side (almost $4 for one taco depending on the meat you choose) but they do come loaded with tender and flavorful meat so overall I felt the portion was fair. I particularly liked the spicy tinga chicken, which actually wasn't spicy at all. Now that we've tried it for ourselves, we will definitely frequent Chubby's. I found myself in Durham and very hungry. There were a number of options and I went with Chubby's. I'm all about tacos! Who isn't? It's a cool spot with ample tables and a nice bar. I opted for the counter service. It was 5:00 somewhere, but I wasn't ready for a drink just yet. A nice, soft-spoken, young woman took my order. I went for the #3 combo that had 3 tacos; carnitas, ground beef, and chicken tinga with rice and either refried or black beans. I went with black. The woman gave me a basket of warm tortilla chips to start. I found a seat and filled my drink and visited the salsa station. There were about 10 choices ranging in flavors and heat. I choose the mild verde and one that was only labeled a daily variety. While I was getting my salsas together my food was delivered to my table. Nice and fast! I started with the black beans which were average. I felt they needed more flavor. I moved on to the rice which turned out to be cold. So far things weren't going well. On to the tacos. I'll preface by saying I'm not the biggest fan of corn tortillas, but I'll eat them. That's my failure for not checking if there was an option. Each taco was wrapped with two tortillas which is cool since they tend to be thin. I started with the carnitas. I love carnitas!! Unfortunately it lacked flavor, although the meat was nice and juicy, and tasted very fresh. Next was the ground beef. There was definitely more flavor here. It was above average, but not by much. Finally, chicken tinga! I really love chicken tinga and was really hoping not to be disappointed. By this point I had enough of the tortillas so I ate the ingredients with a fork. The chicken was juicy, tasted fresh, and had a nice kick to it. This was definitely the highlight of the meal. If I have the chance to stop in again, I will. I like to give places a second chance. Next time I'll check if there's an option for a hard shell and will definitely get the chicken tinga, and I may even give the carnitas another shot. read more
