Just went for a vacation to Coos Bay and everyone said "VISIT CHUCKS." Dear lord, I was there every day of my vacation. The smoked fish was insanely out of this world! The chinook salmon was the best but yummm the tuna, cod, octopus and oysters were delicious! The smoked salmon stick ($1.50 I think?) was delicious and a great snack... The jalepeno smoke salmon stick is even better. Everything in here is FRESH (never seen salmon so red, plump and fresh!!). Staff is very knowledgeable. Already miss this place :( My suggestion? Get a salmon stick and walk around the piers and jetty, enjoying the view. read more

Chucks indeed has a large selection of fresh seafood to choose from... if you can stomach the smell in the place. I personally can hardly go in there, but I'm not much of a seafood fan so that likely explains it. Since I can my own tuna, I have purchased from Chuck's on occasion and it does make it simple and easy. Not cheap by any means... there's NOTHING cheap at Chuck's! On an occasion I needed to do some business with the owner, I was starkly disappointed in the attitude, and rather surprised at the lack of congeniality. Wondering if that prevails in the workplace too, or if that is just how others are dealt with when they try to do business relating to something other than fish. Since my run-in with a sour person in either management or ownership, I really don't solicit this place, nor do I recommend it very often. It definitely has it's place in our market, although if a person checks around, there's generally fresh seafood available in a few locations - including docked boats (in season). I prefer to buy fresh off the boats. read more

We specifically came to town to get some steamers and Chucks was the place we wanted to get them from. This must be the go to fresh seafood place in town (I don't know where else one might get fresh seafood in town) as the place was pretty packed. The display case was filled with salmon, shrimp, scallops, oysters and other friendly things from the sea that I would absolutely have devoured if given the chance, but we were just here for the steamers. Overpriced seafood that one can get elsewhere for less is the downside. On the upside is the selection, the quality and the amount of spices and condiments one can buy at Chuck's. If you are buying seafood for regular meals at home, you'd better be RICH but if you're getting something for a special occasion or as a gift to give, it's okay as taking the high price hit a couple times a year isn't that big a deal in the greater scheme of things. You've got to check this place out. Fish so fresh it's almost still moving. Wild salmon so red I've never seen anything like it. Try the smoked oyster sticks. Or the salmon sticks. Hey there. I grew up in the Midwest. And eventually found myself in Oregon. I lived in and explored the state from 2010-2017. I worked as a pilot for an air ambulance company based in Coos Bay. I spent most of my time in the Bay, Roseburg and Klamath Falls. I met my wife in the area. I hold my experience there close to my heart. I learned everything i know today about sustainable living, fishing and backyard farming from living in the beautiful state of Oregon. We now live in Chicago. Right now, I'm watching "Food Forward" on Netflix. And was almost brought to tears when I saw your segment. Chucks had always been a 'must to go' place for me when in your neighborhood. I always rave about it. Your cans of tuna are the best I've every had, no need for crackers ;). I love what you are doing, please don't ever give up! I can't wait to return. I was so excited when I saw this place and the good reviews. We ordered the clam chowder and some bread. Both were very unimpressive. Clam chowder had a strange flavor and way too much bacon grease. It seemed like they shredded the potatoes and then cooked them strangely, or maybe they used frozen potatoes. Not sure, but yuck. The sourdough bread was horrible. Very cheap. All I can say is they use lots of yeast and not enough flour when making it. They may be buying the bread, but should buy from a better baker. I did not buy any fresh fish and it all looked great in the case. I would give them another chance if buying a fresh fish, but never again for the chowder or bread. It' almost devastating when expecting great chowder and bread and getting terrible instead. I'm being generous with my stars as I don't want to be unfair since I didn't try the fresh fish. read more

I'm from MO where there is NO fresh seafood and believe me, Chuck's tuna is the BEST! Although it's expensive, I ration it out and I can't stand any other tuna now. If you like slow, cold-smoked fish, clams, or oysters, this is the place for you. Lots of fresh fish and crab in season to take home to cook, and some really great treats from the smoker. The albacore is out of this world. In addition to plain smoked albacore, they have chunks with various spices/flavors. They sometimes have salmon candy. Wow. Stock up on your way to Cape Arago or the South Slough National Estuarine Reserve. read more

This place is small, the crab salad is mostly nasty lettuce and for this Louisiana girl-just not enough crab! I spilled my water, and everyone helped me clean it up except the one waitress working the entire place. All in all just a tourist place to watch the fisherman. read more

I go here specifically for the fresh oysters- a dozen for $6! Keep them cold, and cook over a grill till they open. Add some lime and tapatio, and you have a very expensive meal for a very cheap price. Oysters are twice the size of any you'll find at area restaurants, and they come directly from the farm across the street. The staff at Chuck's will even give you pointers on prep and cooking. If you want it, you can pick up seasoning here too, along with canned and smoked seafood, but it is a little pricey. read more

Now, do I wish I had a boat so could pull fresh fish out myself? Well, I guess so, but I think I'd still go to Chuck's. What we love: the smoked oysters, albacore tuna loins, salmon (fresh and previously frozen are both great; we only get Pacific, though they've run out until the season starts again in the spring), crab (we buy it already picked), canned tuna (though you can get Chuck's elsewhere too). There are two or three tables set up to eat there, but it is really more of a market. But we've sat there and had a lovely crab lunch on at least two occasions when we were hungry! The people there are super helpful if you need help, but super efficient. If you need something special, speak up! (I always ask them, for instance, to take the skin off my salmon. They of course do a beautiful job.) Expensive? Not for what you get. Fantastic fish (even if previously frozen) handled right. read more

Stopped in at Chucks Seafood and ended up buying fresh shrimp and cocktail sauce. The shrimp were the freshest and plumpest I have ever eaten and the cocktail sauce was just right. It was a delightful experience to eat this very fresh shrimp. We also bought a salmon filet but have not eaten it yet. I will review it later, if I remember. read more
