Large crab chowder with two pieces of garlic bread and soda
    Doug M.

I saw this place featured a couple of years ago on Diners Drive Inns and Dives and wanted to check it out as the story of the owner is a very touching one. If I could add a half star I would rate this place 3 1/2...the food was good but not great. They are only open from 11a to 2p...we showed up about 12:15p and there was a line. The menu is limited to Crab Chowder (various sizes), actual crab and garlic bread. My wife ordered two whole crabs (about 3 pounds at $17 per pound) which is expensive....but for crab that is on par. I ordered a large chowder with two pieces of bread...$12 for the chowder and bread is $2 per slice. With a couple of sodas the tab was just over $80. The line moved very slow....as there is just two people working...one cooking and one taking orders and serving. The serving guy was moving very slow...and he was not friendly at all...my wife commented he seemed angry. Never said hello, goodbye, thanks...just spoke the minimum to complete the order. I know things get busy and all of that...but being friendly sure goes a long way and the cost ls nothing. They were making bread and I was told it would be 10 mins...it was closer to 20 but we finally got our order and ate on some tables on the dock (the restaurant is actually in the marina which is cool). My wife enjoyed her crab..it was definitely fresh. My chowder was good but not great...they were very sparing with the crab in the chowder...it was 80% cream soup and 20% crab. The bread was fantastic. Overall this is not a bad spot at all...prices are high but that is just the case with crab these days. The wait was a little longer than I would have preferred for what you get...and the service was miserable. If they upped the friendly factor just a bit I would probably go 4 stars.

Excellent crab and crab chowder, Hospitable service and beautiful views on the docks!!

Omg! I can't say enough about this place. Hidden in the marina, my husband and I were referred to come here from our friend Nikki Delventhal (check her out on YouTube). THIS CHOWDER DID NOT DISAPPOINT! Make sure to get the crab chowder in the sourdough bread bowl. The bread is made daily and then whatever they don't use they donate to a homeless shelter. The guy working was so kind and brought us some cheese bread on the house which was incredible too! This place is 2.5 hours from our house but we will definitely drive back for it! Thank you Novelli's! Best chowder we've ever had!!!! And I'm a flight attendant :)

Best crab chowder ever!!! Also gluten- free... you can get up to a quart of chowder. It's awesome so delicious. Don't pass it by.

    Their motto in the kitchen.

Garlic bread was yummy and crab chowder had great flavor and herbs, just hardly any crab, bummer.

This place is GOOD. Crab chowder (just go ahead and get the XL!) And mom's bread is a delicious start to your coast visit. Walk up and order at the counter, sit at their dock seating picnic tables or take it to go! The staff aren't overly welcoming, but that doesn't really matter because you just make one interaction with them when you order. It's a nice experience to go to the beach, eat chowder on the fishing dock area, and explore downtown Florence just nearby. Nice Ambience, nice food, nice prices!

    Large chowder.. very watery texture

So I was super excited to come try this place, I didn't even know that it was on DDD show until I read the reviews on yelp. I figured it must be good then if it got on an episode. Walking up is the small little shop on the water, two gentlemen working not very pleasant and, just seem like they cared to provide any customer service. Ordered a large chowder and wanted to order some cook crab but he just stated to me "we don't have crab". Thought this was kind of funny since it is a crab place. Maybe it's not crab season, but just his response wasn't informing or pleasant. The menu is pretty limited, they have some garlic bread that smells pretty good but I did not order. They're out of crab cocktail, it shows that they will have crab toast coming soon. Took my order to go, and eat in my car since it was sprinkling out. Soup was warm, not hot. It basically tasted like a creamy soup, full of herbs, and a lot of small chunks of potato. Occasionally I would get a long string of what appeared to look like crab but didn't really have any taste. I would say that this is definitely not the best crab chowder reviews claim. In fact, I didn't even feel like it had any crab flavor... So not only do they lack in customer service, but they also lack in a good crab chowder in my opinion. Oh and they don't have a crab. Maybe I caught them on a bad day, but likely not gonna come back, nor recommend

    Great view though

Delicious crab chowder! There is no seating outside and little outside. Your order at the counter.

Ask the Community - Novelli's Crab & Seafood

Do they have LIVE CRAB? Will they cook it to order? Or do they cook all of their crab in the morning and just re-heat it for service later throughout the day?

When they have crab, and it depends on how fishing went, they keep them alive in a tank in the building. The tank was broken when I was there last (late Sep,) but it was being repaired.…

    Does the chowder have bacon?

Both were outstanding and way better than I expected. To be honest, the pasta dish was one of the best I have ever had and this is one dish that I am critical of because I have had really good Jambalaya pasta and some bad ones. This one was way way up there. The sausage was excellent and the chicken and shrimp were perfect, but the sauce made the dish. I can not wait to have it again. The whole staff was friendly and our waitress was excellent and very helpful. My only regret was not asking for a window seat when we got there. We had a reservation and there was a table by the window that was open, but we got seated by the entrance. A couple that walked in after us with no reservation got the table by the window which was odd. Again, not a deal breaker and I should have asked to sit there. I definitely would not hesitate to eat here again or recommend it to everyone. I am looking forward to the next visit.

The kids' fish and chips were a pleasant surprise--made with real rockfish, which you don't always see on a kids' menu, and it was done perfectly. Emma loved her sushi roll, and LaRue's shrimp sliders were packed with flavor and cooked just right. I went with the panko fried prawns along with the Hawaiian pulled pork, and both were absolutely excellent--crispy, fresh, and full of flavor. Even the appetizer set the tone for the meal--it was clear right away that they care about quality. What really stood out, though, was the combination of great food and great service. The staff was friendly, attentive, and made the whole experience feel easy and enjoyable without being overbearing. Overall, this was one of those meals where everything just clicked--food, service, and atmosphere. We were brought to a table with a lovely view of the water and took our time with the menu. Our server had a trainee with her and was very kind and patient with her. We ordered the shrimp artichoke dip as an appetizer, the crispy chicken burger with onion rings, and the cod sandwich with clam chowder. The dip was so good! It was very oily, a little too oily for my taste, but the flavor was fantastic and it wasn't fishy at all. I do wish they gave us more bread, though, as we ran out and still had dip leftover. The chicken sandwich was good, but the chicken was too small so some bites were just bun and lettuce. The onion rings were fine but needed more salt and seasoning. The chowder was alright but was oily and a bit gritty. I've had better clam chowder down the street for sure. The staff were busy but nice. We weren't left alone for too long. I did wish we were given water refills, the whole meal we only had one glass of water each which isn't enough when you are eating salty seafood. The restaurant was pretty clean and tables were turning over quickly. They have their own dedicated parking lot, but if you can't find a spot there is also plenty of street parking. All in all this was a fine place to eat. It was fairly affordable for a tourist town, but it was pretty oily. The dip was the best part, even with how oily it was. Without the dip this would have been a 3-star visit, but the dip definitely bumped it up a bit.

The customer service was exceptional. The staff was incredibly friendly, attentive, and impressively fast without ever making us feel rushed. You can tell they genuinely care about the experience. Now, the food--starting with the chowder. It was delicious, packed with large chunks of potato and generously sized clams. A very solid start to the meal. The French fries were cooked perfectly crispy, though a bit on the bland side--definitely better with ketchup. The salad, on the other hand, was a standout. Easily a 10/10. The shrimp were great, and the freshness and crispness of the greens really made it shine. For the main courses, the shrimp melt was fantastic--great portion size and loaded with both cheese and shrimp. They definitely didn't skimp. The shrimp skewers with fettuccine Alfredo were absolutely amazing and full of flavor. Lastly, the fish tacos had some highs and lows. The portion size was great, and both the sauce and salsa were very enjoyable. However, the fish itself was a bit bland and relied on the toppings to carry the flavor. Overall, I loved my experience and would absolutely recommend checking this place out!
