Service is incredibly slow and the staff are not friendly. They were fully sold out of garlic bread when we got there and the crab chowder is expensive, especially for how little crab there was in it. We had to stop somewhere afterwards because none of my crew were full from the chowder. We will go back again and that is a 5 for us. Yeah, they were out of live crab or smoked salmon, but that isn't why you go there. It's the Crab Chowder! And the Garlic bread doesn't suck too much. Get your chowder, a bottled drink and head to the stools with the 1" x 12" counter or the picnic tables on the deck. Not the most luxurious seating but remember, you are there for the chowder. The seating allows you to watch the river traffic and enjoy the outside weather.They do sell the chowder to go if you want to take it and eat elsewhere. read more

I saw this place featured a couple of years ago on Diners Drive Inns and Dives and wanted to check it out as the story of the owner is a very touching one. If I could add a half star I would rate this place 3 1/2...the food was good but not great. They are only open from 11a to 2p...we showed up about 12:15p and there was a line. The menu is limited to Crab Chowder (various sizes), actual crab and garlic bread. My wife ordered two whole crabs (about 3 pounds at $17 per pound) which is expensive....but for crab that is on par. I ordered a large chowder with two pieces of bread...$12 for the chowder and bread is $2 per slice. With a couple of sodas the tab was just over $80. The line moved very slow....as there is just two people working...one cooking and one taking orders and serving. The serving guy was moving very slow...and he was not friendly at all...my wife commented he seemed angry. Never said hello, goodbye, thanks...just spoke the minimum to complete the order. I know things get busy and all of that...but being friendly sure goes a long way and the cost ls nothing. They were making bread and I was told it would be 10 mins...it was closer to 20 but we finally got our order and ate on some tables on the dock (the restaurant is actually in the marina which is cool). My wife enjoyed her crab..it was definitely fresh. My chowder was good but not great...they were very sparing with the crab in the chowder...it was 80% cream soup and 20% crab. The bread was fantastic. Overall this is not a bad spot at all...prices are high but that is just the case with crab these days. The wait was a little longer than I would have preferred for what you get...and the service was miserable. If they upped the friendly factor just a bit I would probably go 4 stars. read more

Omg! I can't say enough about this place. Hidden in the marina, my husband and I were referred to come here from our friend Nikki Delventhal (check her out on YouTube). THIS CHOWDER DID NOT DISAPPOINT! Make sure to get the crab chowder in the sourdough bread bowl. The bread is made daily and then whatever they don't use they donate to a homeless shelter. The guy working was so kind and brought us some cheese bread on the house which was incredible too! This place is 2.5 hours from our house but we will definitely drive back for it! This place is GOOD. Crab chowder (just go ahead and get the XL!) And mom's bread is a delicious start to your coast visit. Walk up and order at the counter, sit at their dock seating picnic tables or take it to go! The staff aren't overly welcoming, but that doesn't really matter because you just make one interaction with them when you order. It's a nice experience to go to the beach, eat chowder on the fishing dock area, and explore downtown Florence just nearby. Nice Ambience, nice food, nice prices! read more

I've gone up and down the West Coast trying clam chowders. This one is a crab chowder but regardless, it is my favorite of all chowders. Better than the Spud Point chowders in Bodega Bay which are high quality in their own right. Get the cheesy bread too. read more

So I was super excited to come try this place, I didn't even know that it was on DDD show until I read the reviews on yelp. I figured it must be good then if it got on an episode. Walking up is the small little shop on the water, two gentlemen working not very pleasant and, just seem like they cared to provide any customer service. Ordered a large chowder and wanted to order some cook crab but he just stated to me "we don't have crab". Thought this was kind of funny since it is a crab place. Maybe it's not crab season, but just his response wasn't informing or pleasant. The menu is pretty limited, they have some garlic bread that smells pretty good but I did not order. They're out of crab cocktail, it shows that they will have crab toast coming soon. Took my order to go, and eat in my car since it was sprinkling out. Soup was warm, not hot. It basically tasted like a creamy soup, full of herbs, and a lot of small chunks of potato. Occasionally I would get a long string of what appeared to look like crab but didn't really have any taste. I would say that this is definitely not the best crab chowder reviews claim. In fact, I didn't even feel like it had any crab flavor... We are in Old Town Florence for the annual Chowder Festival. We purchase a Tour Card at the Main Pagoda for $5. It has a map and name of locations that are participating in a competition to see who has the best chowder. We walk around to the different shops and restaurants, show your tour card and get a small sample of their chowder. At the end of the tastings you vote for the best chowder. The winning establishment receives an award plaque and the notoriety of having the most popular chowder of the year. We found Novelli's had an incredibly long line for the chowder fest. Goes to show who's got it! We found the chowder very heavy with herbs and potatoes and was a crab chowder rather than clam. The herbs we found were abundant to where we had little bits of herbs remain in the mouth and throat. We liked the flavor but the thickness of the chowder is not as thick as we remember. I used to love coming to this place. The couple who used to run it were friendly and the crab chowder was the bomb! Just ate here this morning and sorry to say things have changed.... The two guys who are running it now just didn't seem friendly. The crab chowder used to be the star, but now, like the other reviews, are nothing special. In fact there was very little crab meat in the chowder. It was also not hot at all. The worst part the the whole crab. They serve it strait out of the refrigerator. Don't know if it's days old or what.... Tasted rubbery, no flavor, and forgettable. They charge extra $3 for butter, cocktail sauce and a small wedge of lemon. Seriously???? But if you're going to order the crab, splurge on the cocktail sauce. It's the only way to add any flavor to the crab..... time to find a new go to place in Florence. read more

My youngest daughter and I were walking along the pier when we came upon this crab shack. I remembered seeing this shack in a Food Network show. So I decided to get the famous crab chowder and garlic bread for lunch. I brought the extra large size and 2 garlic bread for $28. The whole family really liked the chowder. I almost don't want to do this review. One of those situations that if you share your best kept secret it's no longer a secret. But these guys are so nice and produce such a quality offering that it would be a shame not to give them a proper shout out. This is our go to spot for picking up fresh whole crabs when we head out to the coast. They have saltwater tanks they keep them alive and they also cook them on the spot. Grabbing a half a crab with some butter that's not salted so you can actually taste the crab and sitting on the dock is pure heaven. There is another more famous place in town that gets the notary ready for chowder but if you want something that is truly flavorful, not gloppy, and incredibly delicious skip the lines, forgo a table seat and grab some of their crab chowder here. So delicious! These guys are also extremely nice. I sat and listen to them explain to some Arizonans how to eat fresh crab. He's very patiently showed them three different times the best way to get the most out of their order. read more

We strolled in mid afternoon on a Sunday and they only had crab chowder and garlic bread. There weren't any crabs that day because the fishermen hadn't been out. Anyway, that made ordering easy! We got a large chowder and a couple pieces of garlic bread. The crab chowder had a great herb flavor base, but about half the order was liquid with some small shreds of crab meat and tiny chopped potatoes at the bottom.
