There is A reason why this restaurant is successful. The owners give good portions, offer their customers good tasting Mexican food, I like the hamon and eggs, with rice, beans, guac and sour creme. Bought at ~2:00pm on a Saturday. We have been frequent customers. Lately, the vegetarian burritos have been disappointing. No guacamole as menu states, about 1" block of melted cheese at middle of burrito only, small strands of lettuce, no salsa in burrito, but plenty of dry rice, and very few beans. Not much 'vegetarian' for it. and we paid for addition of 3 thin slices of avocado at take-out order. Also, no steamer to make the tortilla hot, so at home ten minutes later already cold. We love this place and stop here often to eat cause I love their burritos and their delicious habanero salsa. The guys that work here are all really nice, helpful, attentive and totally on it!! --it really makes the experience great. Unfortunately, the service at the front counter has been consistently disappointing. The lady at the front is going to ruin it for this place though. She has zero customer service skills and just stares at me waiting for me to order. There is no greeting "hello", or "what can I get for you today?" Or "are you ready to order?" Anything!!! Great food, amazing prices, and friendly people. I was surprised, I haven't heard of this place until recently. It's hidden in the Petaluma Safeway plaza. It's definitely a hidden gem with authentic Mexican food. Everything looks delicious and the inside is usually packed with people. The food was so good that I forgot to take a picture, I will update my review with food photos when we come again. We got one regular burrito and one super burrito. No chance I'm coming back to this place. I ordered two tostadas with ceviche, the ceviche was dry and tasteless, and the tostadas were over cooked and tasted like burnt tortilla, the quesadilla was a pound of meat with a little bit of cheese wrapped as a burrito, the tacos tasted like dog food. It was hands down the worst Mexican food ever and I grew up in a white household who served tacos on Tuesday with flour tortillas and ground beef. Chunky's has pretty good food. They are always busy. The restaurant can seat maybe 20 people inside and a few more outside. There are a couple of tables outside. The service is always good no matter how busy they are. The staff is efficient and aim to please their customers. I like their menu options which is quite broad. I had their super nachos with carnitas, and my daughter had a burrito. Both were yummy. They offer chips and salsa to you. The chips are not my fave. I am pretty picky with my chips though. It l's loud because the cooks communicate to one another and the phone rings a lot for phone orders. I think it's nice that they take phone orders in advance. I moved to Sonoma 4 yrs ago and have no idea where to go to get anything as tasty as Chunky's. I haven't been back to have lunch in that time. So, I called last week to order a flautas plate with rice and beans. Yum, it's still the same delicious food...Omgoodness Yey. The owner is always so nice and polite. He greeted me with a Hi and a smile. The food was ready in 10 minutes, it was 11:30 am, so it was beginning to get busy. As for cleanliness, it was very clean as always from memory and pretty quiet even with people starting to roll in. They have seating inside but there are a few tables right outside with trees for shade, if you prefer. I will always continue to recommend Chunky's for flavorful food and great prices. read more

We are very upset and Disgusted in the we received about. 3 weeks ago, we have been going to their restaurant for at least 10 years and and the plates we got were burnt. I mentioned it to the cook and he embarrassed us look like it's our fault. It was the best place for kids to have burritos on top of that. The food has always been great. The newest person at the register could be nicer person. Either on the phone or in person when taking orders. She's is kind of rude and doesn't listen to people. We used them to cater some dishes for my daughter's birthday party. Ruben was easy to talk to and give me direct pricing for full and half pans of rice, beans, carne asada and carnitas. They had the best pricing out of everyone I called. They followed up via text 2 days before my order pickup. They provided a big black warmer bin we were allowed to take home to keep the food warm until we were ready to serve it, and we returned it the next day. Everyone raved about the food! The food tasted delicious but I believe it made me sick too. I cannot consume peppers (night shades sensitivity) and didn't put any peppers on my order but I was in agony for hours after consuming the food and I believe it's from peppers that were put into the taco salad.
