Stumbled across this place while visiting my dad in rehab in Petaluma, and were amazed by the freshness, quality, and speed of service for our lunch. The chips and homemade salsa were great, and my burrito was bursting with smoky flavors. I never had a chance to try what my wife ordered - she gobbled it up before even offering me a bite (Thanks for nothing, honey). My first time here was for an event and I had remembered how fresh & flavorful the food is. My son and I came in for lunch today before a movie and enjoyed a perfect meal. The chips (housemade) and fresh salsa were delicious. I had an ice cold Corona which was so refreshing on a hot day like today. I had the avocado tacos - delicious although would have liked a bit more avocado. My son liked his steak tacos very much as well as the limeade. The presentation of the food is beautiful and the decor colorful. Even the dog bowl they keep out is Mexican pottery! read more

Tortilla Real, my food was good, wait, it was really delicious! I had the Birria plate, the Birria was so good, I dont think ive ever had better. My guy had the Carnitas plate, and we shared a cheesy poblano empanada type dish.. Now im kinda mad, because I didnt photograph all of our dishes, nor the yummy cantaloupe aguas frescas I drank.. Service was like at a fine dining restaurant and the food was up there with that feeling. The restaurant was smallish, clean, quaint. Great food and service at this locally owned restaurant The two kinds of guacamole were an unexpected delight. My favorite was the more simple one; cilantro, lime and onion while my gf preferred the one with the pico de gallo. For dinner, I selected the birria tacos. The flavor and texture of the meat was great and the three were more than enough to satisfy my hunger after a long day of enjoying wine country. Delicious guacamole and enchilada sauce! We ordered cheese enchiladas with a carne asada taco on the side. The handmade tortillas were very good, slightly thicker than we are used to, but delicious none the less. The service was friendly. The only complaints we had, the chips served with the guacamole were a little stale. Still edible but not 100% fresh, and the tables for two are too small for the size of the plates served. With the guacamole appetizer and our two entrees, I had my plate hanging over the edge of the table. I literally had to hold the plate while eating for fear it would tip onto my lap. For the appetizer, we wanted guacamole with chips; it was $12. We enjoyed the delicious pumpkin soup with toasted pumpkin seeds and two crostini. We also chose the carnitas taco with corn tortilla. We were eating at a leisurely pace. Our waiter came by twice to take our main entree order but my companion wasn't ready. When we were ready, our waiter was busy perhaps fulfilling called-in orders? Finally another waiter took our order. The staff is cordial but we kept trying to get their attention for a few things. I don't recall anyone checking if everything was ok, and after 5 minutes I went to the counter to try to get a second spoon for the soup to share either my companion. The staff was really busy, but there was only 4 other patrons in the restaurant. The walls are very tall and there's a lot of open space on the walls. One walk had a large shelf of Mexican ceramics. Accompanied my mother here for lunch. Great atmosphere and very attentive staff. We thad fundido for appetizer. It was quite salty. I wasn't a fan of the cheese used. I ordered a chicken tamale which was very different from any tamale Ive had before. The texture was very soft and instead of it being filled, the chicken was on top. Although it was flavorful, I wasn't a fan of the texture at all. It was almost like flan. Chips and salsa were quite good. As well as pina colada and churros. read more

Sadly disappointed by the bland and unappealing flavors at this restaurant. The papaya agua fresca was lacking in papaya flavor and I discerned a slight medicinal flavor in the colored drink. It was undrinkable. The large green salad featured unflavored, tough jicama slices and flavorless radishes over greens tossed in an insipid dressing. It's young jicama season and I had looked forward to juicy, well-seasoned slices and more vegetable variety. The fish taco was covered with a sauce reminiscent of 1000 Island dressing. The corn tortilla housing the fried fish was oddly rubbery. My companion's black beans were unseasoned and his side corn salad was made with canned corn. His huevos ranchero was apparently tasty, however. The waitress was friendly so two points for her and the huevos. read more

First the place looked clean and we were seated quickly on a Thursday late afternoon. The food came quick The food overall was OK. Not disgusting but absolutely not the best we have had. My whole family left very disappointed and craving more food since they were not satisfied. The salsas were watered down it seemed and their "spicier" salsa was not good at all.. the taste was something I have never tried before. My kids even said they would rather me cook Mexican at home and said I cook better lol which was a surprise because they don't mind my cooking but I also know I'm not the best at it. ( I'm half Mexican so I did grow up with lots of Mexican food and cooked a little but not enough to be a YouTuber lol ) They don't have typical Mexican foods / drinks available like horchata which my husband always orders elsewhere and regular refried beans... just black beans which we don't mind but still. This is a Mexican restaurant get it together guys.... The portion sizes were not bad but could have put a little more on the plates My daughter absolutely hated the kids chicken bean and rice burrito ... that's usually her go to... the chicken came shredded ... so I guess they do not do grilled chicken??? Kind of weird to me... they didn't ask us for options so I'm assuming that's their go to way of serving. Overall my family and I do not recommend this restaurant if you are looking for some hit the spot Mexican food this is not it. For some reason we LOVE Chelinos in Santa Rosa.. across from Grocery outlet and so far we just haven't found another Mexican restaurant that tops Chelinos. On a cold day nothing beats a bowl of pozole. Ordered online and it was ready when I got there. Service was great and they offered tortilla chips. I got pork and my wife got chicken . When I picked it up place looked very good and clean . Great place to eat at or pick up a order to go. I definitely will be back. read more

Noooooo permanently closed?! This was the best Mexican restaurant in Petaluma by far... so bummed. I ate that vegetarian burrito once a week for years now, they were so nice too. Just so fresh and good and I always wondered why everyone goes to Mi Pueblo (sub par Mexican and expensive). I'm bummmmmmed. We love this great spot. It's a sweet location and atmosphere. The patio is lovely. Tonight we did happy hour. My hubby loves the fish burrito and it was especially great tonight the different flavors of the rice beans and salsa dovetail into a sumptuous mix. I had tacos of soy chorizo and vegetable mix. Both superb tonight. These are happy hour small street tacos in very delicate thin tortillas. Flavor BING! We both had a guava drink that was light, not sweet and refreshing. Go have a nice meal. Unfortunately my experience was underwhelming. Very dark and cold. I asked for water that never came, the Passionfruit Margarita was very tangy and I had to flag down someone to get a second (I hate doing this) even though we were the only table there with multiple waitstaff. The lime that came with was dry and for decoration only. The Bean Dumplings were so overpowered by cilantro it was all we could taste, they were also hard and dry. Chicken Tacos were almost all onions and dripping with pico de gallo. The Pumpkin soup (seasonal) was awesome. Thick, great le crema, and crunchy pepitas!!! Had lunch at Tortilla Real. Started with the chicharones and the chips and salsa that they brought to our table. My friend ordered the esquite and salad. I tried the esquite and it was tasty. It's different from what you would buy on the street. It had more ingredients. For my meal, I had the pumpkin soup. I was nervous, but curious enough to try it. It was delicious. The chicharones were very good. They serve it with fresh salsa and pico de gallo. Our server was attentive, friendly and nice. The atmosphere was lively. Stopped by this place for dinner while my mom and I were visiting Santa Rosa for the day and came here for dinner on the way back. I got the Carnitas plate while my mom had the enchiladas, both were very fresh tasting and flavorful, the service was also very nice, the staff were attentive and made sure we were taken care of. My mom and I sat out side since we had our dogs with us, the outside was blocked from the wind still so it was very nice, we also sat by a heater to make it extra cozy. I do also want to note, this place is gluten free friendly, I have celiacs and I felt okay after eating which is a bonus. I'll definitely come back here when I'm passing through the area. read more

What a great find! I was looking for a vegan burrito and they not only make them at Tortilla Real they have a dedicated Plant Based Menu (This, after first walking into another place around the corner and asking for vegan menu items: they told me they could make me an omelette. Um, no.)! The burrito Tortilla Real made for me was delicious, stuffed with a variety of healthy ingredients, and no animals were harmed! It came with a tangy green sauce, was reasonably priced, and they assembled it quickly for take-away. I was wishing I had time to linger though, as the outdoor patio was so inviting and beautifully decorated. Will just have to go back! I've been ordering take out from here for a while now and finally decided to dine in. We came in on a slow Monday night and the staff were really friendly. They have a lot of vegan options if you're looking. They have a lot of fun appetizers to choose from and I've enjoyed most of them. We ordered the steak and birria plates and a couple of drinks. We also got a tres leches and churros. The food was good and the drink that comes in the little bowl was way too good. I probably could have had a few of those. It's a good thing they limit you to only two order. They also serve brunch if you're looking for a new weekend brunch spot to try. read more

We stopped in recently to check out Tortilla Real for "brunch", mainly because we saw they offered pozole. Parking can be a bit tricky--there is a lot, but due to all the surrounding businesses, it's always quite full. We came just as they opened at 10am and there were only 2-3 spots available. We had the breakfast burrito with chorizo and the pork pozole. The pozole is great--so much amazing dried chili flavor and a stock that is super rich, yet doesn't feel too heavy. This is amazing comfort food for our cold, rainy days, or if you need an assist to recover from a night of drinking... Although they do give dried chiles as an accompaniment, I wish the broth were a bit spicier. The breakfast burrito was only okay (imo). The tortilla was the best part--so soft and delicious, with just a bit of crisp from being toasted on a flat top. Inside, there was a nice mix of scrambled egg and chorizo, but way too many huge chunks of unseasoned potatoes. It was also $14, which is on the higher side of breakfast burritos in town--it's just too bad that it was mostly filled with boiled potatoes. But that tortilla... so delicious! We'll definitely stop in again, but will probably skip brunch and try their regular menu. Anything that comes with a pile of soft, pillowy tortillas sounds great to me! read more

Came in before a show at the Mystic and was very pleased with our dinner. While a true cocktail would have been great, the margarita with tequila infused sake was actually quite good! The chips and salsa to begin with were great. Great chips and an addictive salsa. We had the Chile rellenos, the flautas, and an ensalata real (with black beans). My first experience here was for a yelp event, and it was a wonderful day with a fun event, but after that, each experience with them has gone progressively downhill. This downhill culminated in our dinner this week that was so terrible, I had to apologize to my better half for wasting so much food in chucking it all in the compost. Our first visit, I ordered the vegetarian enchiladas ($10), an agua fresca ($4), chips and guac ($10), and hubby ordered one fish taco ($5) and one carnitas taco ($3.25). I loved that they made all their own tortillas, but they forgot one of hubby's tacos, and there were weird hard things in the guac, so it was a hit and miss. Second visit a month later, I ordered the guac and chips again, the agua fresca, the veggie enchiladas with mole, and he ordered one fish and one tinga taco. We tried to revisit what we had last time to see if there was improvement but somehow, they were even worse than the first visit! This week we ordered from them again and this was the worst (and last) time. I ordered the vegetarian (not vegan) tamal plate, chips and guac, the vegetarian pozole, hubby ordered the carnitas burrito, and we ordered the tres leches cake for dessert. The tamal plate was vegan, not vegetarian and I specifically ordered it with cheese and crema- but no. The chips were soggy and unsalted, the guac was watery, and the pozole was probably one of the worst flavored pozoles I've ever had- even with all the toppings. Hubby usually loves his burritos, but he said it was flavorless and boring, and tossed it after just a few bites. The only thing that was sort of ok was the cake, but even that was crumbly (?!) and really unimpressive. It's really sad because they have a lot of fans of their food, but I really can't seem to understand why. With their quality decreasing in tandem with their flavors, it's just time before they bottom out. With Sol Food opening up soon just down the street, they are going to have to majorly up their game or they will lose all their business to a better quality and better flavored competitor. We've been twice now and both times deliciously satisfying! I love that they make their own tortillas - too bad the place doesn't smell like it when you walk in but that's ok. I'm only giving 4 out of 5 because they don't do Al pastor which is a go to for me wherever I go. Everything I've had is delicious though! Chips are light and crispy, yummy roasted tomato salsa. I'll date myself, anyone that ever loved Sonoma Taco Shop back in the day will love their chips and salsa! I did order the dorado (crispy) tacos they do make, only 1 flavor since the tacos on the menu otherwise are served on the fresh tortillas so they don't fry well. Delicious (have I said that enough) little bites filled with potatoes and chorizo. Thin, crispy as heck, served with fresh lettuce and tomatoes on the plate.
