This is the second time I've taken a car I've taken to Sean Church to work his magic. The first time i met him was about 15 years ago, when I put a turbo on my Honda Civic del Sol VTEC and heard about a piggyback system called Hondata, which would allow you to remap the ECU and tune it for whatever modifications you installed. Hondata's own project cars were getting tuned at a place called Church Automotive Tech, so that's where I went. Sean and his crew were super accommodating and I left with a Hondata s300 installed and a custom tune that was worlds better than the FMU that formerly fed my thirsty OBD1 B16A3. Many years (and cars) later I wanted something to tinker with, so I picked up an LS1-equipped Trans Am with twice the cylinders (a V8) and a centrifugal charger equipped for breathing duties. It had been tuned once...but it never ran right, feeling sluggish and laggy and backfiring whenever I punched it. I upgraded the fuel system and the pulley on the supercharger and then called around looking for someone to dyno tune it. Eventually, I decided that Church was the place to go. I showed up a little early and they took me in right at the time of my appointment. There are several tuners there and I've heard they're all great, but Sean Church himself took care of my ride. Despite having to jump-start my battery that decided to give up right then and there, everything else ran smoothly. Sean showed me the fuel tables and explained why the car felt sluggish and backfired constantly (it was running way too rich and the timing was pulled across the board), and then began adjusting the tune in between dyno pulls. After he was satisfied, he detached everything and then rode with me around the block, monitoring the car and fine-tuning it on the fly. Let me tell you, it felt like a brand new car! The backfiring and hesitation were replaced by a healthy roar, and the car pulled smoothly and quickly to redline. Sean Church and his crew are friendly and professional and masters of their craft. My turn. Why does the Mister get to have all the fun? A little history. We have an older weekend car. It's not a daily driver. Every time he swaps the motor we have to bring it here so Shawn can tune it. It's kind of pricey but he does excellent work. We also have had several private Nissan events here where all participants pay a flat fee to test their horse power. Well I bought myself my own little gem. Not a Nissan but a Honda. We made friends with Hondata who wanted to team up and do a Honda event here. We purchased the Flash Pro to increase my cars horsepower, filled the tank with 100 octane and were curious about the numbers. We invited a few people with the same car who were also curious about HP. Our participates each received 3 Dyno pulls. Located in a place called Wilmington. Where's Wilmington? Well it's a very industrial part of town off the 405 where are those oil riggers are and terminal island. Not a whole lot happening in this area. Very little places to eat. There is an ice cream man though. Listen for him. Private events are great. Usually it's a set price for each participant. If you need a custom tune Shawn is an expert. He knows his cars. read more

Great experience here. I had to bring my car back a second time when Shawn discovered boost creep on the dyno. I had it taken care of and came back for a retune. I had to pay extra as I was unaware and it was my fault. I just want to say in response to that recent 1 star guy that's trying to sling mud just to recommend his buddy's shop. As it has been clearly explained to every single person that went to Shawn's, that this is a tuning shop, not a repair shop. If your car has issues and won't run properly, it's actually your responsibility as the owner to take care of them prior to the tune. If the issue is discovered on the dyno, you are going to be charged lol. Don't waste everybody's time. Get your car checked out before bringing it to a tuning shop, you are responsible for your car's condition, not the tuning shop. Not sure what all the rave reviews are for here. If you like rude/arrogant staff, being spoken down to, a terrible tune/service, and feeling like these guys just want your money, cool - go here. They don't care about you or your vehicle. Had to do two sessions here after wiring was burnt the first time... was that their fault? Not sure but felt like an oversight for sure - a quick look in the engine bay could've seen the risk. Second time back charged me another remount fee (which I wasn't told about). When done, I was grunted at to look at the monitor for results, with no explanation or walk through of what they did. Idle was still very high, they refused to adjust the screw, hacked the air flow down and couldn't get me out of there quicker. Shawn was nowhere to be found conveniently. First drive on the road and car didn't shift at all. Later found out the transmission wasn't even connected. How did that not come up?! What were they actually doing and charging me $600 for?! Went to Izzy Performance instead. Totally different experience. The team there are good humans who actually take the time to look at what's going on, make recommendations, and work through problems/solutions with you. I could list all the errors they picked up (and fixed) but the car is a totally different drive now (for the better). And it shifts. Church was a total waste of time and money. Great experience, although my WRX wasn't up to par to get it properly into Stage 2+ -- overall good experience although I do feel that when going there, the vibe is kind of stale and if you don't know them or anyone there personally, your just another customer/job for them. Had my 14 Wrx tuned here today. Was very pleased with the Pro tune Daniel made for me. He is a true profesional. Car runs amazing and no longer has boost creep issues. Made 318hp and 344 ft lbs . It gets very loud in the shop when they are running the cars. Ear plugs would be a great idea if you are going to be waiting in the shop while they tune. There were a couple chairs in the shop to sit down while you wait. I didn't go any farther in the shop, so I don't know if there is a waiting room. This is in an industrial area, so there are no shops close by for food or drink. Also, the roads around here are very rough, so if you have a lowered car, beware. The crazy semi drivers don't seem to care as they are driving full speed ahead. Bottom line is I would not hesitate to recommend this shop to anyone. read more

Shaun did a great job in tuning my vortech supercharged g35. Last year I went to so cal to have a good friend of mine install my vortech. After the install was done, I took it to church's to have it tuned the following day. Shaun was great in answering all my questions. The g35 was tuned more for street since it was still on a stock block and still had cats as well. The car ran great even in the 90+ degree weather. Let me first say that this isn't your normal tuner!!! They are actually nice here!!! I have been to Churches twice now and will never go to another tuner again!!! My first tune was done by another shop, I won't name names, buy it rhymes with Simi floater sports. They were complete jerks and treated me like I was a huge bother, even though I was spending around 5k there. Well at Churches it is a complete different story. They are the nicest guys around and really take the time to do a good safe tune. If you are looking for HUGE numbers this is not the place to go. But if you are looking for great numbers and reliability, then Churches can not be beat. So they start by taking off all 4 wheels(I have an STI) so it's all wheel drive. The they spend a good 2-3 hours tuning your vehicle. After they are done guy go one a 20 minute ride with the tuner still making adjustments while you are driving, I couldn't believe it. All the while the customer service can not be beat. Sean, who is the owner is a stand up guy and will do his best to make sure your tune is up to par. For those who don't like to read - great service, great prices, very knowledgable staff. I made an appt with Shawn about 1 month ago on a project vehicle. We had a little hiccup and the tuning device needed to be picked up. Shawn not only helped in getting that device, but he drove and picked it up himself and held it until the appt. Now to the tuning day itself. Once I arrived he was running a little behind due to the prior customer, no prob it happens. So while waiting he grabbed some cold water and a chair - first class guy. Now it was time for my vehicle. Pulled it up and got it on his dynos. Very interesting setup I haven't seen before. He took the time to explain the differences and pros. I wanted to leave him alone to do his tuning but holding back to ask questions. He tuned my car for many hours until it was perfect. I didn't care too much about numbers, but how the power comes on and dependability. Come to find out, he had to stay very late due to some other customer giving him a hard time. He told that customer he would help him (even though its the customers fuel pump that failed) not the tune. Man of his word - rare these days. Could not be happier with Shaun and Church Automotive. Car had a really bad tune from another shop. I brought it to Shaun with an extremely rough idle and excessive hesitation at the top end. In 3 hours Shaun was able to completely fix my top end issues, gap my spark plugs properly (he discovered they weren't gapped anywhere near the correct specs), and promised he would take a look at my idle issue again after I checked my car for a vacuum leak since none of his normal idle techniques did anything. After having another shop check and verify there were no leaks I visited Shaun again who was extremely patient with me and the unique idle issue we were seeing. After working with the TT manufacturer he discovered some tables that were changed quite extremely by the first shop. As promised, Shaun only charged me for the initial tune/spark plug gapping even though it required another 2 hours of work to get her running properly. I've been taking my cars to Church for years. He always does a great job with tuning. Good guy to deal with and always willing to help and talk to you about issues or problems with the tune or car. Cost is cheaper or on par with most tuning places and i like the dyno pac system, its not as hard on the car as a normal roller dyno. As far as i know he tunes most makes of cars, and works with open source, Cobb access port and stand alone ecu. Thanks for years of good tuning. read more
