A friend and I planned to check out Chutney's on a Saturday afternoon after hearing great things about the place. On arrival, the place had a nice ambiance and had a wonderful smell of Indian spices and food. Since it was a bit of an off time, we were seated quite quickly, but the place was by no means empty! We ordered the Chutney's Pinwheel, a Pani Puri Wonderbox, Lamb Biryani, and Kadhai Chicken. The Chutney's Pinwheel was quite good, which a crispy but not too dense wrapper. The filling was very flavorful as well and paired with the dipping sauce, everything felt balanced and tasty. The Pani Puri Wonderbox was something I've never had before, but my friend has had it and recommended it. The little puff balls were reminiscent of potato chips that have puffed up from cooking, but with much more sturdiness. The spiced potatoes that came with the Pani Puri was also flavorful and eating the puffed balls stuffed with the potatoes and topped with the tamarind and mint water changed the entire experience! I would recommend getting the Wonderbox, if not only, for the presentation, which was phenomenal. Our main dishes were the lamb biryani and the Kadhai Chicken. The Lamb Biryani came in a clay pot with a pastry like topper. This was the most elegant presentation of birayani I have personally seen! The food itself was quite flavorful and the lamb wasn't too gamy or lamby. The Kadhai Chicken was also very good, with a very good balance of spices. Although it was not as creamy as I thought it was going to be, it was still very good and I would recommend trying if you're looking to try all sorts of Indian curries! Although I got a 4/5 on the spiciness scale, I did not think the curry was that spicy and was more mild that anything. The service was also very good, with the waitstaff being very attentive and welcoming. Since the menu is so vast and Indian cuisine being newer to me than others, I would definitely come back to check out the rest of their menu! Chutneys in Bellevue has undergone a remarkable transformation since my visit two years ago. Back then, the food was below average, but I was flabbergasted by the taste this time around. It seems like they've made massive changes, probably brought in a new chef, and the improvement is undeniable. While the average ratings may not reflect this yet due to past issues, the current menu delivers dishes that come impressively close to the flavors of Mumbai. As someone who's usually very critical about Indian food in the U.S., I had my eyebrows raised by several items. One appetizer that hit home was the "Manchurian Bombs". These tasted highly similar to the ones you'd find in Mumbai, India. I won't give away too much detail because the surprise is part of the charm. The standout for me was the "Lasooni Paneer Tikka Makhani"--perfectly grilled cubes of paneer served in a rich, creamy cashew and tomato-based gravy with bell peppers and onions. It wasn't too thick or overwhelming, just a great balance of flavors. Pairing it with their "Garlic-N-Cilantro Naan" (crispy with extra butter, as I recommend) made the meal even better. However, I had high hopes for the "Rumali Roti", which is extremely rare to find in the U.S., but unfortunately, it was a letdown, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone visiting. The other main course we had was the "Veg. Nizami Handi", which was surprisingly very good, especially considering that this restaurant primarily focuses on North Indian cuisine while this dish leans more toward South Indian style. I also had a decent mocktail called the "Cucumber-N-Mint Cooler", which was sweeter than I expected but still refreshing. For dessert, the "Sizzling Chocolate Brownie with Ice Cream" was very good--maybe not excellent, but certainly worth trying. The service was impressive, with staff frequently checking to ensure everything was good. The ambiance is decent, though it can get loud, as they have a live singer performing Indian songs on the mic. If you're looking for a quiet dining experience, this might not be the place for you. However, I found the vibe nostalgic and enjoyable. I went in with a vegetarian friend this time, so I didn't get to try the meat options, but I'll be back soon to explore more of the menu and update my review. For now, it's safe to say Chutneys is a hidden gem with some fantastic dishes, and it's worth a visit! read more

This was my first time - it was surprisingly classy when I walked in, a little dim but with warm lighting throughout. It feels more upscale than the price, which is always appreciated. We got an Amritsari Chole, a Chicken Matka Biryani, and lamb rogan josh. The flavors were all very nice and savory. The chickpeas could be more tender though, but it tasted nice. ALLERGY WARNING: Some items with nuts are noted on the menu, but some, like the tikka masala, have cashew nuts that are not listed on the menu. If you have nut allergies (or any allergy), please make sure to bring it up to your waiter. Ours did a great job of knowing which items secretly had nuts and recommended alternative dishes. The high tea experience comes with a traditional masala chai (which is my favorite part of the high tea experience), bites of the iconic chaats and street food from India and is topped with some decadent mithai (dessert). It is an all veg menu. The high tea can be shared between 2 people and the teapot of gold that they serve the chai (molten gold) in is good for several refills. It's not easy to get fusion right especially with Indian cuisines because Indian food itself is an amalgamation of many ingredients. However, Chutneys elevates each dish with a touch of creativity and other cuisines- Mexican, French, Mediterranean to give you a global desi gastronomical treat. The generic dishes that were given a twist were vada pav, sandwich, ragda chaat, samosa, and corn cheese pattice. And it's not the food that's almost a 9/10. The theatrics, presentation and service are equally mesmerizing and totally insta-worthy! When we walked in at 5 pm on a weekday, people were already waiting at the door to get in as that's when they open. That should tell you something! So if you are a true chai lover and love all things pretty and yum - you know where you should be planning your next outing. I have had Indian food before in Pittsburgh from the Temple out in Monroeville, and a couple of other buffets. I liked the food but had no idea what I was eating and therefore didn't tend to feel confident ordering on my own because I didn't know what anything was. It was on a Sunday afternoon and I was actually on my way to Kobe which is next door, but they were closed. Since I was already out, I figured I would give Chutney's a try. I got the Goan Curry Chicken Vindaloo with some rice. I love spicy food and I was definitely sweating. Fantastic! I went back a second time and tried the Chicken Biryani which is not only a lot of food but also really, really good. It comes in this big clay pot, which is covered with bread at the top. I have since moved back to Pittsburgh and honestly don't even know if I want to try any other Indian food, since it likely isn't going to compare to Chutney's. The only thing I would say is that sometimes they can take a really long time to take care of the bill. Might not be a bad idea to approach them when you're ready to pay. read more

I came here with a group of coworkers for the first time. (About 8 ppl). The drinks were beautiful, and the food was delicious (spicy, I love it, and full of richness and flavor). The service was top notch, despite the fact that we had a large group and the restaurant was very busy at the time - we were still treated like we were the only customers in the place (frequent check ins, drinks constantly refilled, special requests accommodated, great food recommendations, etc). The portions were also extremely generous...I ordered biryani and hate a good portion at the restaurant....and still had left overs for 3 days! This is an Indian restaurant I have come to many times and one of my favorites in Bellevue! This place has a great ambiance for a date! Not too dark but not bright inside... it is very cozy! The menu is very authentic and you know the Indian food will be good because you're the only non Indian person inside! Lots of Indian couples and families inside, and it is always very busy and packed on weekends, and for good reason. Some of the waiters here look like they could be actors or models... very handsome men working here! And they are all very nice and polite and professional as well! I have always had very wonderful service here. The food is amazing. I always get the butter chicken or a curry, and even the next day I keep thinking about how good the food was here.
