Seriously good eats and seriously cheap. Definitely not a traditional Indian place at all, but I love the idea of Indians taking the traditional Mexican burrito stand idea (hijacked by chipolte's) and making it their own, but then I'm Mexican. I came in expecting traditional rotis, but this still hit the spot. Chutney's makes a nice change from my "usual" at Felipe's when I feel like branching out, but not too much. The lamb curry burrito wrapped in masala flat bread is great. Chutney's = Indian fast food mixed w/ parts of Chipotle and Panda Express. The Chipotle portion relates to the naan wrapped burritos that I enjoyed. I got the potatoes & cauliflower variety. The bread was fresh baked. They also gave you an option of fixins which was odd to me- hamburger toppings for what? The Panda Express portion = generic takes on paneer served with rice and call it a day. It's not that the paneer dish wasn't enjoyable, but ultimately it was too little and not substantial enough for the $4.50 or so I paid for it. It tasted ok, but ultimately for a value meal I spent about $9 and ended up hungry an hour later (although I did opt for the vegetarian dishes). Go here for a light snack, but I wouldnt plan on staying satiated for long if youre sticking to the veg options. read more

A friend described this place to me as a place for Indian rolls and wraps. So as soon as I got Cambridge, I tried it out. I walked in expecting a kathi roll place (like the amazing Kati Roll Company (KRC) in NYC). But is quite different from KRC, in concept and in taste. The concept is clearly "inspired" from the burrito chain Chipotle. A bunch of main filling options (chicken and lamb, and paneer-potato-beans etc for vegetarians), a bunch of toppings (standard ones like onion, pepper, jalapeno, rice, and some Indian ones like cilantro). Choices of bread to wrap it in (paratha, naan, flatbread). And a bunch of chutneys (sauces). Priced at roughly 5-6 dollars (20% discount if you get 2). I got a chili lamb wrap in paratha with spicy chutney. Not bad. But nothing that'd make me sit down in orgasmic delight, as is the case at KRC in NYC. The lamb was decently cooked and seasoned, the chutney was competent. But there's scope for improvement in the taste department. Really succulent and perfectly seasoned meat and delectably put together chutneys in the KRC way will help this place transcend another level. On pure taste, I'd have given it only 3 stars. I added the 4th one for the novelty of the concept. An Indian restaurant 2.0 if you will, going beyond the standard Moti-Mahal type joints or the chaat-pav-bhaji snack places common in the US. Another innovation of theirs I liked were the 50 cent samosas. They're tiny, and could taste better, but form an excellent accompaniment. As opposed to a full fledged normal sized samosa which will take care of half your appetite, these samoslings if you will, are a good option to have, which can be emulated. They also offer Naanini's (paninis using naan), but I have never been a big fan of the concept, so didn't try them out. Oh, and I fully agree with some of the other reviewers about the wrapping skills part. You are worried about the thing falling apart in your hand. They should wrap the whole thing snugly in paper like burritos or kati rolls or even fat sandwiches are. But overall, solid middle of curve taste, low prices, and novel concept make it a place worth trying out at least once. read more

Goods: Food was good, better than I expected since we just went inside on a fly because we were hungry and walking around the town. Spacious place to sit, I cannot imagine ever waiting for a table. Not Goods: Place was clean but food didn't taste very fresh. The servers were not very eager to serve. We had to keep calling the people from their inside rooms for getting condiments or to order more food. They didn't even bring the food to the table after it took 15+ minutes to cook. This is more like a cafe kinda of a place and is located inside the Starbucks complex, which is at a walkable distance from Harvard university. A similar concept to subway sandwiches / chipotle, however here it's more of indian food. You gotta select a wrap or a rice bowl. And later make the choice to get whatever curry n rice you like for the stuffings or toppings over the rice. They also have samosas and beverages. I tried their wraps and it was just okay for me. Great, cheap food served quickly and with a smile. Although this is certainly not the most authentic Indian restaurant in the Harvard Square area, it is a wonderful choice for a quick lunch or dinner on the go. It is set up like a burrito or salad bar: you choose your format (rice bowl, nanini, or wrap), and then choose from a variety of proteins (such as chicken tikka) and fresh vegetables, finishing with a variety of sauces. I like the chicken momos and the tikka masala bowl with biryani rice! The tamarind sauce is my current favorite, although the myriad of choices means that there's a sauce or two for everyone! I find the food there very flavorful and reasonably priced - with so many choices on the menu, I know that I won't get bored with Chutney's anytime soon! read more

Wow! Fast food Indian, what a concept! This place is brilliant. For under $5 I got the most amazing veggie entree. Not sure what it was exactly- aloo something. Potatoes and peas in a mashed curry over rice. Lots of opportunities to add in fresh veggies, herbs and sauces before they hand over your steaming bowl of lovely. So tasty! Everything looks fresh and appetizing. Next time I have to try the Nanini (panini made of naan bread). Perhaps today, now that I think of it. Got a Groupon Now Deal & used it towards two chili lamb rice bowls with everything on it, one for me and one for my son. I don't think either of us could have been happier - it was absolutely delicious!! I will admit that I don't really know much - or anything - about authentic Indian cooking, but I do know good homestyle food - and this is what this meal was. (I usually don't eat lamb, but I felt like I should be adventurous today - we were both pleased that it didn't have any of that old mutton after taste to it!!) I could tell the lamb was slow cooked - that could lead some who would feel that it was dried out. That's not the impression I got. Sauce & chutney, along with the veggies & rice made a great meal. Son devoured it all, but I was able to make two meals out of it. Everyone was nice, efficient & I got my meal very fast - which is amazing when you think of it - I felt like I got fast-food that must have been cooked by someone's grandma, lol. I'm also thinking that they got the kinks out of the problems they may have had when they first opened (that some of the earlier reviewers commented on). The wraps are pretty darn good. And they're pretty cheap! I, like some other reviewers, stayed away from the meat and went for the paneer, which was tasty with the crisp lettuce and various sauces. As the name implies, the chutneys are the key and you should go crazy with the combinations. The mango lassi was also good. Didn't have a chance to try the 50 cent samosas or momos. It's not the best Indian food in the world, but it's very good if you're looking for a cheap quick lunch that's not burgers or a sandwich. SO DELICIOUS! Chutney's is a fast food Indian fusion place in the Garage that essentially offers Indian burritos, burrito bowls, and paninis. You then get to choose the meat (or veggie), toppings, and chutneys. I got a lamb chili "nanini" with firecracker chutney for $6.99. Wow, I was completely blown away. First off, I loved how tender the lamb was. It just melted in my mouth and there was plenty of it in the nanini. I also liked the spice level of this place. I've found a lot of Indian food in Boston to be quite bland. The firecracker chutney was advertised as very spicy, and it definitely lived up to that. At the end of the meal I was panting, sweat was running down my face, and my mouth was burning. I was so happy to find a place that was spicy enough for my tastes. The only downside to this place was how sloppy the nanini was. The sauce soaked through naan, and it was very hard to contain everything inside the wrap. Now that I think about it, the nanini is kind of a misnomer as it is eaten more like a taco than a panini. Also, the chutney stained the rice bright green, so that was pretty weird. Overall, I really enjoyed my lamb nanini. The price is right and the flavors were there. I would definitely come here over other Indian restaurants in Harvard Square. read more

Whoever first said this was the Qdoba or Chipotle of Indian food hit the nail on the head. I would never make a trip to Harvard Square to eat here but the food is cheap, fast, and satisfying. Its actually better than most food court Indian places I've tried. Though the portions are a bit small. I ordered the Spicy Lamb Nanini (no typo here) and Samosas and both were quite good. I also had a bite of the Aloo Masala rice bowl which was good too (and surprisingly spicy!). Anyhow I would eat here again...but it might be a while before I do. read more

Literally OBSESSED with this place. I wish there was a similar "Indian Chipotle" concept near my campus, because I would frequent it at LEAST once a week. There's something so magical about the combination of flavors and ingredients offered here. Last time I came here, I went for the rice bowl option (think Chipotle Burrito Bowl) and added Chutney's Paneer as my main "protein." It wasn't AS flavorful as I had hoped, but it was still so delicious when combined with all of my other toppings. I'd love to try the Paneer Tikka next time. Would definitely recommend! One of my fav take out place. Serving Indian food in an American Style. The collection of sauce's (chutney's) is great. My fav dish is Rice bowl with chutney's paneer. I like the mango, mint n fire cracker chutney's. I come here all the time when i find myself comfused on want to eat :P The mango Lassi works great for a beverage. Decided to check this place out since I was hungry and they were advertising a special where you get a free momo or samosa with your order if you mention yelp. Ordered a Chutney's Lamb paratha wrap, but they didn't have any paratha left (at around noon - it wasn't the end of the day or anything). So instead, I ordered the lamb "Nanini". Mentioned to the employee behind the counter that I saw them on yelp, and asked for the advertised free momo. The guy told me he had no idea what I was talking about, so I showed it to him on the yelp app on my phone. He told me I couldn't get a free momo, because he had never heard about this special, and the owner didn't tell him anything about it. The nanini looked good in the photos - it was like a grilled panini with naan bread instead of sandwich bread. The one I got, however, tasted like something I'd put together if I got really bored at a mediocre indian buffet. The grilling of the bread didn't really accomplish anything other than giving the lamb and chutneys more time to soak through the naan and make it soggy. The lamb filling tasted like leftover indian food. It was all right - nothing disgusting or anything, but probably not worth the calories. We ordered paneer-rice, samosas and veggie momos on a Monday afternoon. All three were under-cooked, lacked good flavor and worst of all was the staff especially the younger lady. Momos were half-fried, samosas had no salt but worst part was the rice-paneer where rice was undercooked and after telling them the younger lady just argued and said that she won't do anything about it. OK I am admittedly not an Indian food expert in the least so maybe that's why I am such a big fan of Chutney's- but regardless, I am! The entrees are filling and delicious, and the Masala Chai and Mango Lassi drinks are the cheapest I've found in the area (I believe they are priced at $1.35 and $1.65 accordingly, though they are changing prices all the time). Still, under $2 is still a bargain! I personally get their Nanini with Chicken Tikka filling, and Mint, Yogurt and Masala chutneys - yum! The whole thing with a Mango Lassi runs me under $10. I never get any of the appetizers like their spring rolls (don't ask me why) or samosas. Note that they do not have water cups (or so they claim) so if you want to just have water bring your own bottle in from outside. read more

The food ought to get a 4 star, but it lost a star due to its messiness. i had the lamb curry nanini.The naan was very good and the fact that it was pressed like a panini amused me. I got the spiciest sauce, but it was still not enough to satisfy my spicy intake, but I mean there are very few types of food that does. The curry was well seasoned and it was cooked in a way that got rid of the gamey taste of the lamb. My biggest issue about this food was its messiness. As i was eating it, sauce continually dripped out from the bottom of my nanini. Also, when I took a bite somewhere in the middle, the stuffing basically exploded out and onto my white jacket, which by the way still has stains from Chutney's on it. I definitely want to visit this place again when I visit Harvard Square, but I'll probably order the rice platter rather than anything handheld. read more

Moved back to Boston recently after a 7 year hiatus. Somehow I am still a student and so am still looking for good, cheap eats. A friend suggested we meet up at Chutneys. This fits the bill for cheap, filling, and delicious. I got the masala wrap with saag paneer. I added cucumbers, tomatoes, yogurt, and tamarind on top. Basically an Indian Chipotle. They have the same style as Chipotle; but have substituted Mexican for Indian. This doesnt make a difference in the food though.
