I just returned from an amazing experience at the Flying A ranch/The Lodge at Julian Creek in…read moreBandera TX. This was my first deer hunt and every step in the journey exceeded my expectations! The lodge facilities are truly amazing. Beautiful architecture and plenty of offerings to occupy my non-hunting time (pool table, chess, checkers, corn hole, ample book supply, TV/Cable, Wifi). The rooms were incredibly comfortably as well. Nights were peaceful and quiet, and the comfy bed/pillows made for some great snoozing. The A/C worked like a champ and was quiet all things considered. I've stayed in rooms where the A/C was reminiscent of being on the flight line watching B-52s take off. This was not that. Much appreciated! The food and service at the lodge were top shelf. Breakfast and dinners cooked up and served by Mike were amazing. And it wasn't just because I was hungry. The food is really really good! And Mike is at the ready to accommodate any special requests. We dined on Axis burgers, salmon, and fajitas during our three nights. More than enough food was dished out so even the largest of appetites won't be wanting for more. Breakfast is a repeat performance. Bacon, wild game sausage, eggs, pancakes, potatoes, cinnamon rolls oh my it's a veritable food parade. Pair it up with fresh coffee and I'm ready to permanently move in. But we were there for the hunting, so how was that? In a word... the best. Our guides Brent (who is also a wildlife biologist) and Kaden were on it! They worked hard to get us into position for our desired targets. This was my first hunt at a lodge and they graciously answered my nonstop questions. Our party took Fallow and Axis deer, which was great fun. The ranch's property is gorgeous, well maintained and spacious. We spent time with Keith, the main man in charge of the operation and also a wildlife biologist. He explained their philosophy towards the animals on their ranch. I was very impressed with the thinking, caring and effort put into ensuring the ranch's offerings remain the very best. There's a reason why it's hard to get a hunt lined up here. They don't over-harvest their ranch. If anything it's quite the opposite which I appreciate. The guys at the skinning house were just as fun. They do a great job to accommodate any special requests (e.g. mounts, cape, meat selection) and work hard to treat your catch with the utmost of respect. James, Jesse and the rest of the gang there were fun to hang with, swap stories and of course take care of our meat for the flight home. Their freezer was much appreciated! The coolers and contents were well-frozen when it was time for us to leave. Reflecting on our trip, I honestly can't come up with suggestions for improvements. They really hit it out of the park. The entire operation has a lot to be proud of, and it shows in the positive attitude and work ethic of their team. A subtle but very impressive takeaway was how well connected their team was. We would talk with one of their team and agree on something for the next hunt or whatever and their entire team knew about it and were on top of whatever it was. Seriously impressive. I've been to other organized vacations (ski trips, fishing charters) and I often need to have the same conversation multiple times leaving me with the feeling that they don't talk to each other and I have to work the logistics to make it happen. Not here! Maybe the only comment I could offer up would be to rename the ranch from "Flying A" to " Flying Five Stars Best Ever Ranch"... or something like that. They certainly delivery on a 5-star experience but that might be tough on the logo design.... ;) Many thanks to the entire team and I'll definitely be back!

The grounds have lots of friendly animals to interact with. The location feels like it's in the middle of nowhere, yet you're only a few minutes away from Boerne. We enjoyed feeding the goats, donkeys, and pigs. We also participated in a giant tortoise interaction and got to feed and pet him. We were even welcomed by a dancing cockatoo! The bed was super comfortable, and the cabin had everything we needed. The hosts responded quickly whenever we needed anything. We're looking forward to returning to the spot again the next time we need a getaway that feels far away yet is still fairly close to San Antonio.

We did all the activities on the ranch during our long weekend & left with fresh eggs that we plan to hatch!!! The amount of surprises & animals was completely unexpected. It's truly a special place that takes amazing care of their animals & it shows. Right before we left we were able to see something completely amazing: 1 hour old twin Nigerian Dwarf goats still getting birth goop licked up by momma goat! This place is truly a great experience for kids! The first night we did the night adventure hike & walked through splendid & quiet darkness, we were amazed at the tranquility & abundance of stars filling the sky. We found deer poop & learned about venomous spiders, & cacti while finding a live vulture looking down at us! We met super friendly donkeys & horses that didn't want to leave us, they were so super friendly! Our kiddos were allowed to chase a couple of Emus (yeah, that's not a sentence I ever expected to ever write in my life!), those things are so magestic it was amazing to see them running with such easy while our kiddos were so chaotic running behind them lol All this happened in the dark, really cool & such a unique experience! Then we met an arctic fox named Conan. He was just recently rescued so his habitat is getting built while he is in this temp enclosure & the final one will be huge and air conditioned. The mornings were exciting because of the fresh eggs & lively chickens. There is a wonderful array of feathered friends that roam free with the goats through the day, greeting us randomly. We loved how all the animals were given so much free range & were so happy & super friendly! All these rescues truly found the best sanctuary, they are so well cared for! The exotic bird adventure was so much fun for the kids & parents. We got to hold so many parrots & we met the two fun emus again. We got to interact with all the birds as they talked & walked all over us, all so very exciting! Our labradoodle was able to make friends with the local dogs & was able to run off-leash safely behind a huge fenced open space while our kiddos explored the grounds, finding bugs, bones & delighting their imaginations while mommy & daddy relaxed on our lawn chairs so happy for the down time! This place felt so safe for my kids to roam and explore. The petting adventure was so much fun for the kids & parents, we got to meet everyone on the ranch & every adventure is a good length long & we learned so much about every animal thanks to the very professional guide & owner, Micky. We even did the horse riding - all 6 of us got to ride together & enjoyed the peaceful ride with an exciting ending of riding a galloping horse. We all loved it! We left with amazing memories & would recommend this ranch to anyone, especially to those with kids! Vicky & Micky were super accommodating to our constantly changing plans & worked on rearranging our schedules depending on kids' needs. We kept constant communications via text & made sure we had everything we needed down to the pepper, salt & vegetable oil. We absolutely had the most magical experience throughout our 3 night stay, especially with our random goat visits, that was so unique & special! Thank you Vicky & Micky & Amanda & MJ!!

If you're looking for a relaxing Bed & Breakfast in the Texas Hill…read moreCountry with super hospitality, a pool, and beautiful lake views, Justin & Jean Robinson's "Lakehouse Bed and Breakfast at Canyon Lake", managed by Justin as "operator and breakfast chef" is the place to go ! We stayed there from Thursday April 23rd - Sunday April 26th 2026. It was like living in an Italian Villa and you would be hard pressed to find a more gracious host and chef than Justin anywhere ! He's been doing this for over twenty years ! We arrived at the Lakehouse around 3:00 pm and were immediately welcomed by Justin who carried our bags to our upstairs Medici Room and gave us a tour of the house. Justin also provided us with excellent tips on things to see and do in the area, as well as suggestions for restaurants for lunches and dinners. Thursday evening, we ate dinner on the outside patio of Gennaro's Trattoria where we enjoyed their Authentic Italian Kitchen. Friday morning, we enjoyed a delicious omelet breakfast in the Lakehouse breakfast room overlooking Canyon Lake and great conversation with other guests. Following breakfast, we took a leisurely drive down River Road to the quaint town of Gruene (that's pronounced "Green"). There, we had lunch at the Gruene River Grill, followed by a relaxing stroll through the many antique and boutique shops in Gruene, and a visit to Gruene Hall, Texas' Oldest Dance Hall. We then returned to Canyon Lake and enjoyed some merlot wine and cheese and crackers (which we had brought with us) on the Lakehouse's covered outdoor patio overlooking Canyon Lake. We had dinner at Canyon Lake's Wildflour Artisan Bakery & Grill which offers a full menu. On Saturday morning, we enjoyed a delicious Belgian waffle breakfast in the Lakehouse breakfast room. Following breakfast, we drove to the town of Blanco and visited Arnosky's Flower Farm. After walking around the beautiful flower fields, we bought some beverages and snacks inside Arnosky's barn and sat in the chairs on the barn's covered back porch patio overlooking the flower fields, humming bee feeders, and bird feeders. You could sit there a long time as the scene is ever changing. From Arnosky's, we drove to Tillman's Cabin Resort in Blanco and ate lunch at the Rio Blanco Café overlooking the Blanco river. After lunch, we drove to the original 1885 Blanco Court House in downtown Blanco where we took a leisurely self-guided tour of the courthouse. We also visited Blanco's many antique and boutique shops. Saturday evening, we attended the 4 pm mass at Canyon Lake's St. Thomas The Apostle Church. At the end of mass, we witnessed one of their congregants step up to the lectern with the pastor's approval, talk about what the bible says about a wife, ask the lady in the front row next to us to step forward, and then bent down on one knee and asked her to marry him in front of the entire church congregation, and she said "YES" and they kissed. What a beautiful proposal ! Following mass, we had dinner on the outside patio of Canyon Lake's Elio's Osteria e Pizzeria. On the evening drive back to the Lakehouse, we saw lots of white tail deer in the neighborhood. On Sunday morning, we enjoyed a delicious scone and quiche breakfast in the Lakehouse breakfast room. We again enjoyed conversing with the other guests as we had every day, and then we packed and headed home. Sorry for the length of this review but my wife and I thought readers might enjoy hearing about what one can do from The Lakehouse Bed and Breakfast at Canyon Lake. This private access room includes its own balcony with a hot tub and stunning views of Canyon Lake. The room itself is decorated beautifully and the king bed is super-comfortable. The private on-property pool was the perfect place to spend a sunny afternoon. I agree with all the previous visitors who raved about Justin's fantastic breakfasts! Day 1 included orange scones and a delicious zucchini fritatta and roasted potatoes - incredible. Day 2, by special request, included strawberries Romanov and eggs benedict with sausage. Thank you, Justin, for the wonderful food and conversation. We highly recommend this gem and can't wait to visit again soon!
