Years ago, this chicken and jojo's was the best around. Based on those memories I returned recently, anxiously awaiting that crispy chicken and awesome potatoes. Talk about disappointment!! The chicken was bland, and one of the smallest birds that I've ever seen. Was it a chicken or a game hen? The coating was not much more than a dusting of flour. The items that were served were described as jojo's....Not. What appeared was some sort of die cut, potato-like things that had the same light flour coating. These things actually were inedible. I called them several times and finally talked to someone that said yes my bill didnt sound right. But their accountant was on vacation. I called the next week, then the next. WORST. NEIGHBORS. EVER. They are enormous noise pollutants. Four nights a week they blast dreadful karaoke, live music and singing from their patio with no regard whatsoever for the quiet, peaceful neighborhood in which they operate their business. Pandemic or no pandemic, it's not okay to do. Your patio was loud enough as is without the added music. No business should be pumping out so much noise and disturbance. In fact, no other business or residence is doing this around here. Ever. It's unacceptable and the owner should be ashamed for being so blatantly inconsiderate and rude to so many people. I don't even live right beside this place and can hear them all to well from up the street. The sound carries in all directions. It's outrageous. Keeps me and my children up four evenings a week. I was a regular for awhile... When accused or saying unquestionable things, I asked for a chance to fix it but was never provided a way to do so. The bartender who accused me disappeared for a period of time, then reappeared recently. When I went to enjoy the businesses provisions, I was surprised to find them there and they told me I was not welcome. This happened a couple years after the accused event. Absolutely horrible experience. Bartender was rude and angry for some reason that had nothing to do with me. I could tell there was an issue before I even stepped up so, I treaded lightly and took care to be very polite and clear. Instead, I was met with an abrasive tone and the kind of service that no person deserves. To be completely transparent, after receiving my drink in a dirty glass and then receiving my food order which was incorrect and shoddily prepared, I didn't have the patience to directly address it. The police was called on me and my group ( only African Americans in the bar ) I tried to ask the rude bartender multiple times what happened even in front of the police and she walked away without saying exactly happened except " Your 86 " . While talking to the THREE police officers and asking them to look at the surveillance video ( which they declined after explaining what happened ) they all agreed I was in the right and should file a lawsuit because they suspect racial discrimination . I called my aunt ( recently moved from Vancouver ) who is a lawyer at 3:00 am . She was disoriented because of the early call in the morning and they discredited her title. I never dealt with a unprofessional environment in all my years of living in this state. If you are a person of color PLEASE do not attend this bar. If you are looking for a nice DIVERSE bar that does not discriminate head downtown . Trust me I know, I am a Portland native. Also if you do not take matters into your own hands, you will literally sit at a table for 20 minutes waiting for someone to take your order. Bartender & Waitress are absolutely terrible. They desperately need customer service training. Ps- If the owner can give me a message it would be greatly appreciated. I was supposed to have a meeting with your bartenders & my aunt ( the lawyer & a police escort just to be safe ) but she has court on Monday. We would like to reschedule ASAP. I am a server myself and I recognized that our business was not wanted. Because of the rude behavior of the bartender we will not be back. I don't like this place. The layout sucks with the bar around the corner, away from all the seating. The place is also super dated, which is probably why they keep it so dark in there. I've been here maybe 8 times, had the same bartender probably 6 of those times, she still doesn't remember me. She carded me again last time and I smiled thinking she was kidding, since I'd had her as my bartender a few times recently. She wasn't kidding, then proceeded to give me attitude for smiling. The food is also surprisingly bad! They have that "Fryer Tucks" place attached to the bar, so their food is on the menu, but it's bad! The breading on the fried chicken crumbles off so it's messy and hard to eat, plus it has basically no seasoning or flavor. Its just greasy and upsets my stomach. Ultimately it comes down to the people: the bartenders and the clientele. The bartenders I've had seem not to care. Every time I've been there they tend to hide in the back near the cash register looking at their phones instead of bantering with the customers. Which, I don't blame them, the clientele is kinda scuzzy. This place makes me sad. Best part of the bar is the pool table area, if only they had more than 1 decent stick for public use. read more

Came here with my husband to watch his friend's son play live band music. The music was supplied by "School of Rock" from Lake Oswego. Group of pre teens and teens. Genre: Green Day meets Nirvana. If you are a fan of the movie, seeing young teens play and sing live was a treat. The place has an old style ambiance. The interior is a bit out of date but it gives character. Small and cozy. Parking can be tough to find a spot if there is a special event going on. We had appetizers, cheeses sticks and fries. Delicious! Staff was friendly. read more

She seems to have some severe anger issues and problems interacting with people. Tried to have a conversation with her and she immediately began yelling and telling me what kind of person I am (not favorable) maybe she has issues dealing with frustration. We walked into the bar to get a drink while waiting for some chicken at the neighboring chicken place. We sat there at the bar for so long that we saw at least 15 people ( who were all men) come in and get served while we waited. We decided to wait for our chicken next door which you can see the bar from where we were waiting. A man walked in and sat at the bar in the exact spot we were sitting and got served immediately. This is a great DIVE bar. Definitely a dive, but a comfortable one with great food and wonderful servers. I've only gone a couple times but I have been lucky to have a great server both times. She recommends things based on what I tell her I like, and she never steers me wrong. She's attentive and my glass is never empty (which is important to me as a soda drinker)! The happy hour food is a great deal and the dill dip you have to buy separately is simply amazing. Better than ranch, and I am a ranch addict. CMill is the absolutely the most laid back, fun and welcoming bar I've been to in Portland! Hanging out back around the fire pit is like transporting to another world. People from all walks of life talking, laughing and enjoying life together. Another 10stars for the Best bartenders around. Beautiful, funny, unique quirky style & fun to be around these are the type of gals everyone wants to be friends with. Seems like there is only one person for the entire place. Which usually would be a nightmare. But not at the Cider Mill. These ladies work so incredibly hard, never have I waited more than a few minutes. Even when the place is packed. I didn't realize I would miss this place when I moved to the Eastside( to that deluxe apartment in the sky). But after watching 1 Bears game (with "the book club people, wait for my next review) at Claudia's Sports Bar, I knew I did. This is a solid sports bar, with very good fried chicken. I've been going to this place bimonthly for 14+ years and it hasn't changed a bit and I like that. I call this a great dive bar, with great Fried Chicken and an awesome taco Tuesday deal. I wonder why there were lines across the screen for the lyrics? We were one of the only few people singing that night so we got to sing a TON of tracks. We like these secret places people have not discovered for Karaoke yet. Low population of singers good for us. Not so great for their business. What would help is if there was less tentative table service in the back room. Both are loosing money with the service problems. Hire an extra table service person maybe? KJ Mike from Can't stop Entertainment services. 5.0 star-He was super nice and professional with a great attitude. He ran a great set and did not loaf and made singers the priority. The chicken window/counter is in the front and is attached to the cider mill restaurant lounge. There is table service for chicken dinners in the cider mill lounge. Well..... sort of. Review as per the chicken: The fried chicken is ok. 3.25/5 star I have had better. It has medium thick and crunchy breading they need to increase their use of seasoning and it tasted like they forgot to add salt to the recipe. It just didn't "pop." The jojo/potato wedges called little John spuds. There is nothing little about them. A large order is big enough for 4 people. Where do they find potatoes as big as my forearm? They are breaded and fried with the same coating as the chicken. They are OK. They charge for their dill dipping sauce which does have salt that helps boost the flavor of the JoJo/wedges. The baked beans 2.7/5 star were on the sweet side. Heavy with brown sugar and maybe a splash of bourbon. I prefer tangy baked beans. Next time I will order these I will add ketchup and hot sauce to em. The potato salad 4/5 star was very good. It would be even better if the potatoes were cooked just a couple of minutes longer. Reminds me of Pub at the End or The old Hi Hat or some of the dives they had near campus during my college days. The place is filled with TV screens showing sports events. They have bands and Karaoke on the weekends. This place is bigger than it looks. They even have a patio off to the side. The clientele for this Friday night were mostly age 50+ with fashion and hair that have not evolved since the late 70's early 80's. Snuff rubbers, non ironic trucker hats, wranglers, etc. My husband hails from Appalachian mountains, so these people look like some of his hometown characters. These patrons are prob a regulars that have been coming there since the 70-80's. This place is nothing like the surrounding area in which it sits. This is a time machine to old, old Portland. Pre gentrification. Most people crowded around the front bar. The staff seem to focus in and around the front bar and ignored the back dining room. Back dining room- 30 something males with twinges of hipster fashion and huge backpacks playing pool. Very aggressively flirty...... and will make a move if your husband gets up to visit the very dingy bathroom. We sat there in the dining room 20 min until finally my husband went to the front to find out what was going on. I guess there was high drama with some regulars. I guess this was taking up all of their time. Well.....this is what they told us when they apologized to us later. I not sure that this is not a regular thing as per the other reviews. The staff only focus on the bar area and not the dining room. Sad for the KJ karaoke or the bands that patrons go to see and they can't get service in the backroom. Dear owner, I wonder how much $ you have lost because people walk out due to not getting any service? Hire more people to cover peak times. People who care and not just cater to regular barflies. New barflies can become regulars with the right attitude and service. We might go back there sometime. Decent beer selection. Many characters for people watching. I used to frequent this bar but last night I had a very uncomfortable interaction with a stranger who I later found out was the owner. He jokingly pulled my pony tail while walking by and then when he apologized for it he put his arm around my waist as he said that he pulled my hair "out of love". It was absolutely unwarranted and uncomfortable. This i a must visit throw back joint, a hidden Portland legend for decades. I've bene going her for 12 years now and nothing has changed. The chicken takes forever and it's worth the wait. Huge broasted breats ( you can order your favorite piece) and one order of,potted..HUGE plank cut fries in their proprietary batter are fantastic!
