Hmm. OK, so here is the truth. I have been a Buffalo Gap (BG) guy, since the 1970's. Although I have written a few reviews, I just didn't think about reviewing BG, since it is always so BUSY - BUSY. Over all the years, yes, it changed. But for the better. If, you want old school food, in portions that are huge, this is your place. I dream about their food, it is so good. The Beer is always cold and the mixed drinks are more than honest. The parking is challenging, so be early as you may have a walk. This truly is one of my PDX Legacy Restaurants, in the same class as Stepping Stone Cafe, Goose Hollow Inn, Hubers, The Ringside and Jake's. You will not be disappointed. read more

When is a saloon an eatery or a dive bar? Happily, Buffalo Gap is a little bit of both. My most recent visit here was for Thursday Night Football, and luckily there are a lot of screens to accommodate pigskin fans. I will say the layout is weird though; it's a jumble of several separate rooms, an upstairs area (closed when we were there) a patio and a pretty big, distinct game room. It's like a big old house, with rustic vibes, divvied up. The menu is fairly broad, basically a twist on the usual bar food but with better flavors: salads, burgers, sandwiches, bowls, and of course, nachos. We got the chicken gyros which were slathered in buffalo sauce, making for a very spicy but definitely not Middle Eastern flavor profile. Pretty good, but overly saucy, though it made perfect sense --- we were watching the Buffalo Bills at the Buffalo Gap, eating a wrap with Buffalo sauce. Our Nachos Supreme were friggin huge, too! Order carefully. Our bartender and server were great, smiley yet professional, and there was a lot of energy in the room, as I think the Lewis & Clark college kids were having a meet up at the same time. Cool place, little nooks everywhere to sit. Quick service on a Saturday for lunch. Divey, vintage but looked clean. Server was nice but not down for conversation. That's just me. Huge menu. We came here for a friend's post-wedding brunch and although they had one room booked, we ended up taking many of the tables around the restaurant because there were many of us. Despite the chaotic nature of a brunch, it was nice that we could all have brunch to honor the new couple and that the food came out pretty quickly. It took longer to flag down the wait staff to take our order, but once we ordered, we got our food in lesss than 10 minutes, which was surprising. We ordered the vegan sausage breakfast sandwich and the blue cheese omelette. The food was pretty good, especially the breakfast potatoes, which were crispy. The hash browns were a little soggy while the blue cheese on the omelette was not too strong and had good flavors. The vegan sausage breakfast sandwich could have had more flavor to it -- it did not come with much else but eggs and cheese, but the eggs were just a very basic scrambled eggs with not much flavor. Overall, we enjoyed our food here especially given the context, but it could have been little improvements to our food. read more

Surprisingly great evening. We wanted some "bar food", perhaps some tots. I should admit we usually go to a "northwest brand with lots of eclectic pubs/restaurants that also brews their own beer, wine and spirits" and pay a hefty $60 for two veggie burgers and one beer. At Buffalo Gap we paid the same for probably twice the amount of food, better service, and dare I say - better quality? Waffle fries are an option I recommend, and there were enough to fill a normal-sized dinner plate. Tots were a-plenty with the same quantity. Veggie burger was Yuge, as was the fish sandwich, and the two of us "big eaters" could barely eat half. Jalapeno poppers are excellent and a nice spice! Didn't seem to be a whole lot of beers on draft, but there is an extensive bar - it seems they do quick a bit of cocktails. There a pool room downstairs, Keno, some tables in some weird rooms, an upstairs patio (closed for winter maybe?) outside patio (by the back parking lot - also closed) presumably for smokers. We will venture over to the east side again to visit - the portions were worth it for the price (eat in). read more

Priced us out. We were kind of regulars. Spouse and kid, about once every 3 weeks. Great post sports match place or to watch a game. Servers are always so cool, never had an issue. The price vs worth. Especially jacking up the prices to order thru deliver or pick up. In person most burgers are $18. Online they're $21 plus an extra dollar for fries. A chicken salad is $25. $25 for a freaking bowl of lettuce and a chicken breast. Dude. The quality is fine. Nothing special but not bad. Just no longer worth the price. I get it, with fast food charging $20 for a meal everyone was going to mid market restaurants for almost the same price. Inevitable they would start over charging as well. A fond farewell. We'll miss the gap. But just no longer worth the money. Whomever in management agreed to jack up the Yelp/Doordash pricing should be let go. Just ripping people off when times are tough. read more

What's not to like about Buffalo Gap? You can be whoever you are and this place was made just for you. Pool tables? Check. Sweet music? Check. Game day viewing? Oh yeah. Once you start to get comfortable with the atmosphere-it's a lot to take in all at once- it's normal to feel overwhelmed by the choices on the menu. But don't worry too much; I still haven't been disappointed despite my frequent visits. Service is consistent and friendly. Comfy seating with fun areas to have some privacy and escape the chaos. Drinks are fairly priced and amply diverse. Most days, a step into this establishment feels like a walk back into my college days. And that's not a bad thing! Buffalo Gap has that feel of a good ol' neighborhood spot that's been around for ages. Older sort of building, walls covered in all sorts of bric-a-brac, pool tables in back, and plenty of TV's to watch the game. (And this place certainly was hopping with folks watching Oregon put the smackdown on the Big 10.) But it really did strike me as a place I'd love to just grab dinner and a pint on any given night. Beer selection is decent, with about a half dozen taps and some bottle and can choices, plus there is also a full bar. But the food is where it's at, with a fairly extensive menu with burgers, sandwiches, pizzas, and more. This night we both sprung for the Flat Iron Steak Bites. These were absolutely fantastic, with some great rice and veggies on the side. Compliments to the chefs, as well as to the friendly front of house staff. And the prices for them were pretty good, with dinner and a pint running us about $25-$30 range. As for stuff to be aware of, the parking situation is the only big complaint. Their lot is small, and fills up fast. There are street spaces in the surrounding neighborhoods, but we had to go pretty far to find anything, and you should be careful to make sure you aren't blocking a driveway. So all in all, I thought this was a really delightful spot, and I think there's a great chance I'll be back when next I pass through Portland. read more

I had high hopes for this spot and both my friend and I were unimpressed. Three stars strictly because the waitress was wonderful. She was attentive and quick to come over and check in. She was very helpful and friendly. They definitely hire the right kind of people! The drinks were okay, either watered down or just nothing special. The loaded skins were bland and mushy. The salad was delicious and the rosemary bread was wonderful but the chicken was very dry. And my friend said her burger was flavorless and her bun was soggy and falling apart. The cinnamon roll was soft and tasted very buttery and sweet. Something I found to be odd is how close the table is to the bathroom... and the bathroom door doesn't close all the way so you can hear everything when seated nearby. Also, the biggest issue we had were bugs. There were a few flies and some smaller gnat like things flying around us the whole time. We kept swatting them away or clapping them dead and more kept showing up. It was super weird considering the door isn't left open and no windows were open. I was skeptical the first few times we drove by. It didn't seem like the food would be good. I was very wrong and I'm glad I was wrong on this. We ordered to go from here over a dozen times but finally went in a few weeks ago. The place is huge and they have pool tables!!! Their menu is huge and we are coming back to try more. Several food items are our go to: Fish n chips - my partner is British and this is the only place for fish n chips for now Salmon Caesar - salmon was done nicely and Caesar was above average Country fried steak - seriously their gravy is the best. I've had country fried steaks from many places. This is by far the best. I'm talking about places from Bay Area, NYC, Seattle, LA (usual suspects). I won't claim I know the origins of country fried steak. let's just say the way they make it here is good. Been visiting this place for many many years, super consistent. Staff and service is a pleasure. Parking is a bit of a pain though. They have a small lot. A great spot for a casual dinner with delicious bar food! My husband and I stopped by at around 7pm on a Saturday. The establishment is very large with lots of seating so there was absolutely no wait. The vibe is super casual, dim lighting, and lots of TVs playing a variety of different sports. They also have a nice patio area as well. We were immediately greeted by our server who was very friendly! We ordered: 1) Gapdaddy buffalo wings: So these are priced per pound ($15 per lb or $25 for 2 lbs). Each pound comes with about 7-8 wings, which are definitely on the large side. The wings are lightly breaded and smothered with the sauce of your choice. We elected for the traditional buffalo sauce which was flavorful, well-seasoned, and had a hint of vinegar. I was super impressed! The sauce is definitely in the top 3 in PDX that I've had! 2) Fish and chips: So perfectly fried and crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. This comes with coleslaw which I'm usually very indifferent about but theirs tasted so fresh and delicious. And of course this comes with a bed of fries, yum! Oh, noteworthy to mention that service is very FAST! I think we got our order within 10-15 minutes of ordering. This place is historical and from what I read part of the building goes back to the 1800's and it is log cabin style. It has been added on to. So this is a sports bar/casual get what you pay for kind of restaurant. :) They stay busy! The wait staff has always been nice and have provided good service. We were a table of 6 for Brunch on a Sunday and the waitress served drinks and menus immediately and served the drinks promptly. I have never had anything bad off the menu and everything has been good and a substantial portion. Today I had the "Bacon Bleu Omelet" which is a three egg omelet filled with avocado, pepper bacon, and three cheese blend, topped with creamy bleu cheese sauce. YUM! It seriously only took about 15 minutes for the food to arrive and topped off drinks. My omelet was so good! It was served piping hot with hash browns and an english muffin/jam. The coffee was even good! :) I have also had delivery from here and the food was the same as when eating at the restaurant and packaged well. So if you are looking for a place that is solid with a menu that covers breakfast, lunch or dinner check this place out. :) I will be back! read more

This place to me was nothing to write home about. Average American fare. The wine was average too. I did enjoy the hummus plate, and the garlic cloves were a nice change. My husband and I live in Johns Landing and buffalo Gap is our favorite neighborhood bar. Whether you want a quick drink or a good Saturday night. Great drinks and good food. Service is usually good but Laura is by far the best server. She is always on it, so attentive, knowledgeable, so sweet and always greets us with a smile when we walk in. So, I took a photo of the receipt, not for the price (which was astronomical for the terrible food we got) but rather, I wanted the waitress' name from "Barf-alo Crap" -- oh, I mean Buffalo Gap. Many who have given low ratings here have comment on bad service and things like the "rude ass server." None of the 4 servers looked happy but ours, "Server 259"/"Sunny" was particularly rude. My friend did not have his reading glasses and was squinting a bit. I helped him with ordering the main dish but understandably, he thought it would be quicker to just ask "Sunny" if they had Brussel sprouts. She barked, "If it's not on the menu we don't have it!" She then sensed how rude she sounded and said, "I don't mean to be sarcastic." This is after she was already rude to me when I asked about a beer. "Sunny" is not. Major dark clouds with a strong chance of bitchiness. I am calling the manager after leaving this review to share our thoughts. The food was sub-par. No, it sucked, actually. There was so little food in my Hula Salmon Bowl. $15 for a small piece of thawed, previously frozen, dry and rubbery salmon that was totally bland. They drowned the grains and the whole plate in teriyaki sauce, making it overly sweet and sloppy. My friend got the Thai Chix Ancient Grain Bowl with very little chicken and a WHOLE lot of broccoli. $15 worth. Both plates were large with a shallow bowl center that held the food. One slight brush of the fork revealed the bottom of the plate with either dish. We also had a side of sweet potato fries. DRY and bland. Do not eat here. Make better use of your money and find joy just a skip away -- at McMenamins Fulton Pub & Brewery. read more
