    Mama's Dip
    Mel M.

My wife and I had a chance to go back to Cilantro Tacos with my mom who is visiting from California. During our previous visit, my wife and I tried their California Burrito, with carnitas for my wife and carne asada for me. Both burritos were bursting with flavors and were served in generous portions...we couldn't finish all of it. This time, we ordered the Bowl with Carne Asada for me and Carnitas for my wife. My mom tried their California Burrito 3 fish tacos. We were also served a flavorful dip that is not yet on the menu that the owner plans on adding soon...it'll be called Mama's Dip. It was so good, we can't stop eating it with chips. My wife actually just ate that with chips and took home the bowl. I too liked that dip very much that I too packed my bowl to go! The owner shared that they started the business 12 years ago and moved to the Newberry location 6 years ago. There's a reason they've been recognized for their food. Everything was prepared well, flavorful and freshly made. We learned they make everything in house from fresh ingredients...nothing frozen nor canned. Such care and attention to detail elevates the dining experience and raises the bar for fast casual Mexican restaurants. Clean space with friendly service and vibes. We will surely be back!

I've come here several times and can say that they are steady with their quality and service. I usually get the the carne asada tacos which are always made perfect. I can say the carne asada tacos had less flavor to them. But my bf got a California Burrito that was incredible that I ended up trading with him. He was a trooper because I truly cherished that burrito. I went full big back activity with the burrito and took the queso that I ordered and just dipped it in there a couple of times. It was an explosion of flavors . You could taste the seasoning in the steak, the fresh pico, cilantro and onions. It all came together beautifully. I have noticed a quality downgrade when ordering tortilla or corn tacos with carne asada, chicken etc. it lacks that kick that the California Burrito provides. All in all, that burrito will be calling my name at night. The meat was tender and the fries inside were the perfect companion. The toppings were fresh and broke through the grease of the fries and the meat was hearty but not too heavy. The queso is addicting and I couldn't put it down. They were certainly generous with the bag of chips that come with it. Me thing I've noticed every time I eat is that the water tastes weird . I had their lemonade and it had the strangest after taste. I would say they don't offer much drink options but maybe getting a Jaritos or bringing your own drink is a safe bet. This visit we couldn't sit inside since they were packed. It's a small place and I think 4-5 tables inside. It was pretty cold outside and I didn't want to sit outside and freeze my toes so I ate in my car. I wish that they had more space but I noticed that most people come in and order out. Good thing to keep in mind though if wanting to order and eat at the establishment , if it's a busy time then you're out of luck.

Beautiful modern but yet some rustic boho design. Loved all the real plant life! Spacious and welcoming!!

This was suppose to be a quick stop but ended up staying to eat. Such a welcoming environment from the decor, the staff, the owner/Nate and the food! Authentic salsas and tacos. The food was SO good! Definitely worth stopping for!! Only 20 min from UF. We will make a point to visit again when we travel.

    Love this place!

Love this place! Great food that comes out quick, homemade everything, guac is amazing! Love their Al pastor tacos so many toppings truly a fav. They also make everything quickly, and are friendly. Plenty of places to sit and enjoy.

If I lived in the area, I would be here all the time. Food was excellent. service was kind and accommodating to my very pregnant indecisive self. The options of vegetarian variety was wonderful to see and taste. Tried the mushroom zucchini and eggplant all would be ordered again. The place itself was clean and I really appreciated the amenities provided. Such as sanitizer in the condiment caddies on every table, the feminine products provided in the bathrooms and the lotion to use after thoroughly washing hands. One of my favorite aspects was the complimentary water. it was so good I used the paid for drink cup to fill up with the complimentary water.

We had flour, soft shell tacos. They come in threes and all three were different, fish, steak, and pork. We also had the queso with chips. Everything tasted so good. I highly recommend you visit this place.

    California Steak Burrito

I love this local restaurant! I haven't been here and quite some time but it's still good as ever. This is my favorite Mexican restaurant in Gainesville. On this time in I had the California steak burrito and it was so good. Anytime you can get fires in your burrito, you're in a good space. I also liked the mango drink with my burrito and it was very good. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for good Mexican food.

    Chicken, carnitas, fish tacos

Been here a few times now and never really been blown away. I've tried a variety of meats and have yet to figure out my order. The best meat in my opinion is the carnitas, which are fantastic. The chicken is not great, and the fish and shrimp are just okay. Next time I will order a bowl, as the corn tortillas fall apart by the time the food reaches the table. I'm not sure if this is a recent change, but the prices are very high for what you get. $11-15 for three tacos at a casual taco joint is a little high. This doesn't even include salsa which you have to pay extra for. Comparing to other places nearby, I can get a big bowl of food from other places for less expensive.

    Large Mango, recommended.

I throughly enjoyed my experience here. I assumed it was a run of the mill "Tex-mex blah". No. BETTER. I had the barbacoa quesidilla, fully loaded with a large mango juice. The beef was so rich the sides of sour cream and verde thoroughly complimented. Our table of two, we normally talk and discuss the food or the travel thus far--faces were stuffed to content

First time here and definitely NOT the last time! This one is the location in Alachua! It's new and spacious! I mean I LOVE Tacos so this here is definitely a vibe! I got the 3 tacos(1 chicken and 2 grilled fish) and they were yummy! They have bowls as well which next time I will definitely get! We also got some spicy salsa with chips and it was delicious! Overall a great lunch! I left the restaurant happy and full!

Nice save. Parking when they're busy is a bit much but we found a spot around the corner from the door and walked to the entrance. You walk through their outside dining area which is all covered but because it had just rained it was a bit muggy for us so we opted to sit inside. The place has multiple floors and I really like that set up. We were sat upstairs on the second floor right by the top of the stairs. Looking around you can see another floor with a reserved area, tvs showing sports, and their salsa bar, more on that later. No chips and salsa here. Chips and Charro Bean Dip. The beans tasted refried and charred if that makes sense. I lost at rock, paper, scissors so I had to go visit the salsa bar and bring back dips to try. They had some pretty good ones like their homemade chipotle dressing, salsa verde, salsa de molcajete, etc. There wasn't one that we didn't like. Our server was really great and took care of us well. I got a Tamarindo Margarita and to eat the Enchiladas Poblanas (chicken enchiladas with mole sauce, queso fresco, raw onions) with the normal side of refried beans and rice, lettuce, tomato, sour cream, and guac. I got a side of extra cheese because I'm a little rat and dumped it on them. The mole sauce really hit the spot. The last time I had it the sauce was kinda bland but this gave such a nice sweet and earthy flavor. He got the Molcajete Azteca (lava rock bowl with char-grilled chicken, steak, chorizo, shrimp, queso fresco, grilled cactus, onions, avocados, serrano peppers, pork rinds), same sides as my dish. He ''Oooh-ed" and "Ahhh-ed" and "Oh my God, this is so good" so you know he was a happy guy. I can see what all the hype is about. Definitely a place to visit.

We got a seat inside away from the noise, oddly enough in about the same place as we almost always have gotten in this restaurant. I went for a burrito, which is also my standard. It was just as good this time around as it was the last time, and the service was still just as solid. Really, for this kind of Mexican food in Gainesville, this is one of the best places to go as far as I am concerned. We will be returning in the future.

So picky in fact my friend Davis and I go to get Mexican once a week in Ocala because we're not satisfied with any Gainesville or Newberry Mexican restaurants. The ambience here is . . . well, you can see it as festive or garish I guess either one. Very brightly colored Mexican chairs and everything else. Both a radio playing and television on with sound: I don't get why restaurants need to have TVs, I can see it for a sports bar but every single restaurant? Come on. Service however was friendly and prompt. Then there is the food. The chips and salsa were certainly homemade and tasty. I ordered chicken tamales and the three-tamale plate comes with rice, black beans, and the tamales themselves buried beneath a salad of lettuce, tomato, and Mexican cheese. The plate was enormous and every aspect of it fresh and very, very, good. The tamales, especially. Prices are very fair for such quality and large plates of food. Maybe when it first opened things ran a bit rough hence the poor reviews but I was only impressed: first-rate authentic Mexican with a varied menu and very good portions.

But now I have finally had the opportunity, and it was definitely worth it! Typically parked next to the old Hollander's Hydraulics building, this taco stand has been operating in the parking lot for the past month, and appears to be doing quite well. They now have their own porta-potty, mostly for themselves but I would assume guests would be able to use it as well if needed. Access from both sides of the road is easy enough as well as there is a cross-over of 441 right at the entrance to the parking lot. Their menu has all the regular things you would expect with a variety of meats... tacos, burritos, quesadillas, tortas, and tostadas. I went with an order of tacos and a burrito. Now, I have found that tacos have become a bit over-hyped, and therefore expensive for what you get. This was the case as well... while the tacos are good, I just found them to be a bit pricey for what you get. You definitely get a better bang for the buck when it comes to the burrito, and I was quite happy with it. When it comes to ambiance, well... it is a taco truck on the side of the road. There is plenty of parking, but nowhere to sit, so this is purely a grab and go kind of place for the time being. Perhaps as they become more established in the location they will have a chance to put out some picnic tables or something so people can sit outside and eat their meals. I will be returning when the timing is right, as it is on the way home for me!
