we've been going to Cilantros for years. We were really disappointed this last time. The chip bowl was half the size, and they've taken the tortillas for tacos and give you 2 street tortillas instead of their usual delicious tortillas. Keep the locals happy-don't change the menu items. read more

I have to admit I was a little hesitant coming here for the first time with a party of 17 on a Sunday but our experience was amazing. We were sat within about 5 minutes and immediately brought chips and salsa which were delicious! Chips were still warm as if they were freshly made and the salsa had so much flavor we couldn't stop eating at them and they did not hesitate to bring the table refills. I started off with a cantarito which wasn't very strong but it had to be my favorite drink I've ever ordered anywhere everyone I gave a taste to loved it but you do have to be a fan of Tajín and chamoy for this one. Food took a minute as expected for such a large party but it was well worth the wait; I ordered a chicken chimichanga which I would highly recommend! It was a huge portion and such a delicious mix of food overall, I was just sad I couldn't finish it. Since we were sat outside it did get cold but the staff was so fast to bring out warmers for us which did the job perfectly. If I lived closer I'd come more often but to me this is worth the drive from San Jose and I will definitely be back here. read more

' does not look like a taco... I picked up an order of carne asada and cheese enchilada with a beef taco, chips, salsa and guacamole. The total was nearly $70.00 !!!! What! But that wasn't the issue. While the chips and guacamole tasted pretty good, the taco was simply a tortilla with a nasty looking slug of shredded beef in the middle. See image. Nasty. My husband had heart burn and was nauseated until about midnight. I had stomach upset the next morning. Not good. On top of that, the hostess/cashier - a very pretty young lady, lacked any sort of warmth or charm. It seemed like her mind was a million miles away and she could barely be bothered. We came to this place as it was near by and dropped my brother off for his first day at CSUMB!! when you walk inside everything is nice and neat it takes me back to when i was a kid and was around my hispanic side of my family. Wasn't a long wait to be seated and food didn't take long either. Once we were sat we were given VERY AUTHENTIC CHIPS. Give my thanks to the chef!!! I always have a great experience here. My daughter was trying to surprise me but the joke was on me. Today I was charged $75 for a slice of birthday flan. How does this error go unnoticed, are they trying to fatten up their bill and tip. This is unacceptable, why should I have to revise the bill for charges like this. TERRIBLE service this evening from "Bartender B." My partner and I were really excited to come here bc we love and frequent Palomar in Santa Cruz. We were excited to try this location closer to our home. We came in at 7:20 pm and were greeted by a friendly and helpful host, who escorted us to the bar. We were welcomed by a young woman bartender who asked us if we were ready to order shortly after being seated. I asked for water and my partner a mojito and told her we needed a bit more time to order food. The mojito came about 15 mins later but no water. We ordered two burritos at that time. That was the last time she came to check in on us. At 8:05 pm, we considered paying for our drinks and leaving, when our food actually came. The food runner was courteous, kind and attentive. We asked for the waters that never came with the mojito, she refilled our chips and salsa, and gave us napkins. No one ever checked in on us after our food was delivered, I ordered sour cream with my meal which didn't come. I asked another employee who said he'd speak with my server and walked right past her. I ate half my burrito before walking up to the bar to ask for it. No apology or pleasantries were offered. Again she didn't check in on us after that encounter either. At the end of the meal I had to walk up to the bar to pay. When she returned with my credit card receipt, no bill was included and she took my partner's plate away while he was still eating. Absolutely Awful and completely disappointing. Will not be returning. read more

The best part is the owner of the restaurant owns his own mezcal factory in Jalisco and his personal mezcals are at the bar available for tastings. Bad service. I worked in the food industry for over 11 years and managed thousands of people. That being said; my and my family's experience was not a good one. 1. Weird rules: No outside cake allowed but no birthday cake, ice cream or even a happy birthday song sang by the crew. $12 to bring your own cake or you choose to buy from their flavorless selections. Brings me to item #2 2. Food was incorrect, dry (over cooked) & flavorless & to top it off, pork was extremely stinky. I as a trained chef have learned to manage & uphold extremely high standards for food quality & service. This team was doing great as far as the waitress serving our drinks. The cook(s) failed horribly to meet the minimum expectation for recipe standard and food quality. Probably the worst bowl of pozole I've had in my whole life. I can level with a bad dish and acknowledge when there are a few good things about the dish, but this time...there was NOTHING good about the eating experience. I did complain about the quality and asked the server to remove this, which she did. 3. Returned food was charged on order plus pre-added gratuity fee. When something Is bad in the food industry, you must ask questions, identify why it was bad and how it can be better. Neither was done. In my case, I was asked to order something else which I refused. When we paid the bill, the pozole was still on there & the extra "tip" was pre added by the establishment. Good take out options for the family. We ordered chicken and steak Rollos and tortilla soup. Our take out order was ready in 20 minutes. It included plenty of sour cream, guacamole, and salsa and all the toppings for the tortilla soup. There are family meals to go. El sabor, or the flavor, of food is so very important to me. In my opinion, a good hot meal is one that is robust in flavor and never needs salt or pepper after the preparation process. Eight times out of 10, Cilantros provides exactly that--A wonderfully hot and superbly flavored meal and service with a smile. Not much more you could ask for... Except perhaps maybe a little consistency. I never know what to expect with regard to service or flavor of food when I come in. It's almost as if i'm playing tastebud roulette. Will I land on red, the flavorless and poorly presented rice and beans or will it be black, the richly flavorful and generously portioned carne asada taco and mango margarita? In all, no matter what, you will receive a decent meal by coming to Cilantros. It happens to be one of my favorites in the area. When my boss first told me we were coming here for lunch I was slightly disappointed - I had seen the yelp reviews and automatically assumed the food was overpriced and bland. Thus, when I walked into the restaurant I was shocked to see the large crowds. We came for a weekday lunch and actually had to wait for a table! Upon being seated you are served chips and salsa. It's pretty obvious the chips came from a bag and weren't made fresh but they combination was still good and who am I to complain when it's free? For my meal I got the enchilada and sopes plate. It came with rice and beans as well. As for the prices - it is expensive. The lunch specials aren't as bad but for a similar meal to mine I would have probably paid less at a different restaurant. As for the food, it was delicious. Everything was flavorful and cooked perfectly! The portions were good, and the food was hot. I think people might be complaining about it being "bland" because it is not spicy, but the seasonings are definitely there. The service was standard. Nothing about the service was extra special, but it also wasn't bad. I could tell our server was super slammed with the lunch rush but luckily she had others helping her with bussing and food running. Overall I would 100% come back here again! I throughly enjoyed my meal. Minus 1 star for price (I'm used to going to cheap taquerias for mexican food) but the portions are good and the food is delicious so if you're ever in the area you should definitely try it! read more

New remodel, Foods OK. only thing is that they allow dogs in the main dining area! it wasn't a service dog and I just think that that's not appropriate when your having a dinner and a dog right next to your food.
