After last night's debacle of American food masquerading as Spanish cuisine, my life partner and I decided to find an authentic Mexican restaurant--the kind that doesn't have a sign at the door reading "Mi casa es tu case," like the one at Casa in Fishkill. That's the Spanglish equivalent of saying, "My house is you house." We knew we'd hit the authentic Mexican food jackpot the moment we pulled into the parking lot of a strip mall. Yes... a strip mall. I know, I know--I had my doubts too. But on the east side of the building, a manicured deck promised delicious meals to come, complete with ample outdoor seating and a thinly veiled attempt to distract from the scenic view of... the MHV Bank and parking lot. Still, it was a good college try. The staff was friendly and happy to seat us inside at my request. I counted twenty tables and a bar. While the interior has plenty of room for larger parties, I'd recommend calling ahead if you're rolling in with a group of ten. Those chips--yes, those chips (see picture)--are made in-house on their very own tortilla machine and served warm enough to make you do a double take. The salsa? Homemade, fresh, and just spicy enough to make you wonder how the rest of the meal could possibly live up to it. (I asked, so you don't have to.) My life partner, being a seasoned chile rellenos reviewer (and let's be honest, a bit of a purist), ordered them without hesitation. I, true to form, stayed loyal to my standby: medium-rare carne asada. Thin skirt steak, sure--but instead of rice, I requested sautéed vegetables, because balance. The attention to detail didn't go unnoticed--smoked cheese inside the rellenos, queso fresco sprinkled delicately on the beans. I leaned in, fork hovering, and stole a bite of her chile rellenos--much to her chagrin. She gave me that "really?" look. But it was worth it. The cheese pull was glorious, borderline theatrical. The flavors? Complex, roasted, just the right hint of fire. The steak was everything I'd hoped for--grill marks proud and present, center warm and red, seasoned with a confident hand. (See pictures.) So I cut into the meat... and it's absolutely perfect. Dripping with juice, rich with flavor. The guacamole? Just right--not too much garlic, not too bland. Refried beans are well-balanced, and the veggies, while a touch salty, were still crisp and colorful enough to feel like a real side dish instead of an afterthought. I sighed--actually sighed--as I leaned back and took a slow sip of the "Flaco Margarita" (see picture). If I closed my eyes, I could almost pretend I was in Oaxaca, Mexico--if it weren't for the guy two tables over talking loud enough to narrate my inner monologue. Oh well. Oh, the Flaco Margarita? You want to know about that? Okay... it's served in a glazed terra cotta cup, and notably features not one, not two, but three flavors of salt on the rim: red pepper salt, lime-jalapeño salt, and classic kosher salt--all encircling the lip like a flavorful crown, topped off with the obligatory lime wedge. A bit bitter without the simple syrup, yes--but that's the tradeoff. The "top shelf" version is proudly low-carb, which is perfect if (like me) you prefer to spend your precious carbohydrate allowance on more noble pursuits than sugar water. We passed on dessert (we're gluten-free--celiac disease sucks), and the bill arrived as the final course. For under 80 bucks, I was reasonably impressed. I would definitely recommend this place for an enjoyable, flavorful, genuinely cared-for meal--especially over those "power" Mexican joints. (Yes, I'm talking about you, Casa in Fishkill.) The chips & salsa were tasty. We were given a complementary cheese quesadilla, which was delicious. The Patron Margarita was just as expected, small in size but strong. The portions were generous. The rice compared to everything else had very little flavor. All of the other food was flavorful. The service was perfect. The decor transported you to a different time and place. My uncle went here before and brought some chicken tacos and the salmon tacos. It was very delicious and I don't really like Tacos that much, if you're really new to trying tacos I recommend this place! We were looking for a quick place to have early lunch on Saturday, was planning to go to the Japanese restaurant in the same plaza, but since they don't open until noon, we decided to give this place a shot... And so glad we did!! At 11:10 am, we are the only customer, and was greeted warmly by the waiter. The interior decor make you feel like you are at a festival in Mexico! Lots of colors, wall arts, cute bar chairs that has various brands of tequila. Super cute! We were with our little monster toddler, he was quite distracted with all the decor that he's was actually good. We were given a complementary personal size cheese quesadilla which my son enjoyed. The dishes came out quickly and we were very happy with our dishes. I had a chicken tamale, which is not a typical dish I would order (my go-to are enchiladas or tacos), but since I gave up flour for lent, I decided went with it... It was so flavorful, the corn meal had a great texture and inside had chicken and peppers. I was in love! I think tamales will now be my favorite. My husband had the sample platter which had taco, enchiladas, burrito all on the plate. Portion was generous, my son really liked the rice and beans that came with each dish too. When we were done, they even gave us a complementary Sopapillas (fried dough drizzled with honey, top with whipped cream) and a small dish of whipped cream just for my son. The location isn't the best, a little strip mall on Rt. 55 in Lagrange NY. It doesn't look like much from the outside but inside is just wonderful bright and colorful. The Mexican artwork all over the place is great. This had to be the cleanest restaurant I've ever been in. The staff is amazing very professional and very friendly. My wife and I have been coming here for quite some time and we're never disappointed. The food is authentic and flavorful and the prices are very affordable. It's another to be told a time and get there to stand and wait an extra half hour, then have your order be incorrect. As for the Flautas I ordered? I asked if something on the menu that wasn't marked 'vegetarian', could be made vegetarian and he happily just said yes! The food was so fresh and authentic. Since we had said we liked spicy food, he also brought us habanero sauce on the side. All the entree's are served with rice and beans. Rice was cooked fried rice style with vegetables. Special mention for the guacamole - sooooo good!! We dint really want to eat any dessert, but finally did eat the banana chimichanga! We were so glad we did!!! It was just the right amount of sweet! A little further than I'd like to travel for dinner but boy is it worth it. Great chicken soup and salsa that comes with chips on every order. My wife is picky, like really picky and she craves this place often. We call for takeout and food is always fresh out the kitchen when we show up, never cold and smells simply amazing. Do yourself a favor and try it. Only thing is we have never eaten there, yet which is a shame because the decor is beautiful and the smell from the kitchen is mouth watering. The service and food was ok and I was impressed enough that I was going to leave a pretty generous tip. 3 adults, 2 kids. Mid-day meal, to be exact around 445pm. 2 beers, a veggie tostada meal and a cinco de mayo sampler. When I got the bill there were sharing fees tacked on that I was never made aware of by a waitress nor on the menu itself. If I knew this was going to be the case, I would have ordered another meal and took it home. My mom is a vegetarian and nonetheless a light eater, so we had to finish her food. The kids barely ate anything at all so we had more than enough. They also gave cheese quesadillas and dessert taquitos. After everything was said and done we got our bill with 5.95 sharing fee for the veggie tostada and 5.95 sharing fee for the sampler. We paid $12 in fees which amounts to an entire meal on its own. When I questioned the waitress she said she thought we were going to order more but when we didn't she had to charge a sharing cost. She had the nerve to tell me she even gives cheese quesadilla and dessert but I asked if they give it to everyone and she said yes. So we were not being favored and of course we shouldnt be but I was trying to make a point. We didnt ask for freebies. I just dont prefer being billed for something that was not disclosed when I sat down to order. I will not be back for this very reason and quite frankly they will soon learn they cannot apply such charges to patrons without notice. Also they have a 4% credit card fee so the bill was $72+ and after everything, she received a $5 tip in the end. read more
