This place is just too expensive. Wilkes Barre is a very Democrat run hell hole. Unbelievably beautiful architecture, but this deli is the only shop in the Center Square area. So, if you are stuck in Wilkes Barre, I recommend you use your rental car to drive 3-5 miles for a place that hasn't been overtaken by substance abusers. Expect to be approached by beggars. I was hungry and ordered a ham, egg and cheese sandwich for breakfast. The server weighed the paper thin slice of ham, then tore off a piece of it to throw away? I obviously I didn't deserve the "extra" 0.02 ounce of ham She then put a paper thin slice of cheese onto the egg. OK. Wrapped it up and wanted $11.36. I said, No. The staff is excellent! Very nice people! I went to Duncan Donuts and bought the same damn thing for $5.36. read more

With 75+ items listed on their overhead white boards, it's very easy to get overwhelmed here at Circles. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to how the sandwiches are listed, so my advice to you is to simply pick one board to choose from and as soon as you've found one that you like, STOP LOOKING. Because you'll end up spending your lunch hour deciding and end up with nothing! As the saying goes, you'll be the donkey who starved to death between two piles of hay. I chose the "Greg's Lucky Number" and asked them to substitute New York Rye bread. When I got it back to the office, I had a very tasty sandwich - sliced chicken breast, extra sharp cheddar cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato and mayo. It was amazing. And because it's Boar's Head, it was super super tasty. Really, a very good lunch. (In case you're wondering, his lucky number is 67.) Two downsides to Circles on the Square. First, it's a bit confusing with the ordering process. There are two different queues and I couldn't quite understand how it went from ordering your sandwich to paying for it. There's a system, I just don't know what it is. And second, this is a take out only place. In the summer months, there are a couple tables outside. But in December? It's all to go. Overall? The sandwich was pretty good, as expected from a deli. The cause for less than the ideal review was from the soup and the pony tailed worker. The man working the cash register was standoffish and seemed to be annoyed with people coming in. The soup was so bad, tasted like nothing, way too loose to to be a chowder. Circles is a great place to grab lunch.. I believe they also have breakfast, but I've only had items from their lunch menu. Prices are extremely reasonable and everything is very fresh. Lots of vegetarian options. If you do a build your own sandwich it's so hard to decide on what to get because there are so many great options. It's also nice to order by number when placing a large order. They offer deliervy during certain times, but make sure to call early before their lunch rush. read more

Their salad bar is sweet, with a few homemade special pasta salads per day. This place is a W-B staple. If you're looking for just a huge sub, then you are not at the right place... If you are, however, looking for a menu with over 70 different sandwiches and subs... then you are in fact at the right place. The inside is small and there is sometimes a line, but it's worth it. To pass the time, the inside has a ton of kitchy magnets, shirts and other random assortments to make waiting in like breeze by. Being a Wilkes-Barre gal, as long as I can remember I have ordered and LOVED #41, the Steamtown Chicken. However, there are so many great items on this eclectic menu that I must give others a chance. The store/deli has great funky, funny items for sale and are displayed all over the store so if you show up during the lunch rush, there are lots of things to keep you distracted - and smiling. I lived out of the area for about 10 years (and have since moved back) but when I was gone, I would crave Circles sandwiches and try to stop by when I was in town visiting family. The only thing I would change about this place would be to find a larger location to include tables. Eating outside in W-B is nice downtown or at Kirby Park in the summer/spring and even fall but forget about the 4 months of coldness in PA...you have to bring these babies back to your work or home to eat. read more

I see that others have mentioned it, but it bears repeating. Circles' mac n cheese is AMAZING. It is the best mac n cheese I have ever had in my whole life. Their salad bar offers a wide variety of choices. Their soup, whatever the choice, is delicious. Gazpacho and mushroom barley are two favorites. Their sandwich offerings contain top shelf ingredients and are outstanding. The Kirby Wallbanger is my usual go to. Even though there is usually a pretty long line around lunchtime (and yes it's worth the wait), there is no shortage of amusing chachkies to check out while you wait. I heart Circles. read more

Its consistency is what takes it to a level well beyond other rivaling delis throughout the area. The shop itself is TINY. You will notice that it is cluttered... filled with a mecca of retro eye-candy/ collectibles... there may be 100+ snarky magnets, available for purchase. I do not mind - at all. Simply way too many options of signature sandwiches. My favorites? (If I can remember) - Owen's Original (BLT-kind of.) - Fair City Chicken (amazing chicken salad sandwich) - Summer in VT (smoked turkey - coleslaw - chedder... hot and spicy, so so so good.) - Penguin Bruiser (roast beef, spicy jack cheese + cool bleu cheese, oh my god... this might be the greatest sandwich in alllll the land..) The abundance of specialty sandwiches can make your head spin... the selection is kind of over-the-top, but the staff is generally wise and awesome - they will steer you in the right direction if you're completely indecisive. Sandwiches themselves are not *huge* to the point where you can not even finish half - but they are decently large, the meat & extras are piled on quite neatly. No seating, so take-out only. Not being from the area I was looking for a good sandwich for lunch. Well needless to say I found it. The place is located in downtown. Easy to find and didn't have a problem parking anywhere. Walking up it looked like a friendly atmosphere especially with having outdoor seating. Huge selection of sandwiches. Probably well over 100. Even if you don't find something you like you can build your own. Highly unlikely you'd have to do that but good for picky kids I assume. Quality meat. After I finished eating my tuna salad outside, which was moderately enjoyable despite its absurd price, I went back inside to ask for a glass of tap-water. Instead of receiving a cup of water, however, I was harshly barked at by a man with long hair in front of a full line of customers. This man, who immediately dismissed me to move on to the next-in-line, snarled "We don't serve water. You can pay for a bottled water in the back." If the prices weren't bad enough to ruin your appetite, the service should be the perfect addition of appalling and disgraceful to get the job done. To my knowledge, all PA restaurants serving food are mandated by law to provide complimentary water, and if they aren't required to do so, I am not required to support their business. Never before have I been denied service to a simple cup of tap-water, and never will I recommend such an establishment as a competent eatery. I sincerely hope they fix this, as legal implications with regulatory departments such as the Pennsylvania Dept. of Agriculture could easily arise--should someone need water to take medication, etc. read more

Neat little place. Has a real artesian vibe that should call to all hipsters like a beacon, yet it remains friendly and inviting. Plus the place has been open since 1985, and in a city like Wilkes Barre that really says something about your prowess as a business. The sandwiches here really speak for themselves. You can make up your own or, if you're like me and incredibly lazy and uncreative, you can pick from the countless creations on their menu, all of which are interesting and enticing. That being said however, the whole place is rather tiny and it seems always packed, the average time waiting in line to order seems to be around 15 minutes, but that time can be spent ogling at the weird incense, scented soap, antiques, or whatever they happen to have on display. Plus, they're one of the only places I know that sells Pellegrino and good cream soda which more than makes up for the wait if you ask me. read more

I come to Wilkes-Barre frequently for work, and I always eat lunch at Circles when I can. It's the kind of deli you want to find, and for a Bay Area food snob, I can always find something I'm glad to eat. There's a great variety of food, with more sandwiches than you could imagine, some vegetarian. Housemade baked goods and a salad bar. You'll also find unusual chocolates, some organic or fair trade, others from Europe, and a nice selection of canned goods, condiments and specialty soft drinks like Pelligrino Limonata and Arranciata. Plus all sorts of knickknacks and funny things tucked around the store. Circles is worth a drive down into town if you're passing by on I-81 or the Turnpike. Just be aware it's all takeout. On a fine day, go down to the river and sit out at the nice new park there. If you take some time to look around, you'll see that Wilkes-Barre has a lot to offer. Looking for dinner? They also have some very tasty veggie sandwiches which I appreciate very much. In the warm months there are a few tables outside so you can enjoy lunch outside. Staff is always polite. Everything is microwaved but the sandwiches are always delicious and made with only the highest quality ingredients. The homemade macaroni and cheese is legendary but sells out fast. This is a good deli on "the square". They have a large selection of creative sandwiches. I haven't found the perfect sandwich for me, but maybe it's there somewhere. The people I've gotten sandwiches for from there said they were "good, but nothing to write home about". The gazpacho soup is always excellent. It's too bad they don't have any indoor seating and outside is just a few tables. It gets a pretty long line during the lunch rush, but the line moves quicker than you can go and read through the entire sandwich list. read more

The first time I had the salad bar and chicken tortellini soup. The soup had a very strange seasoning.. it was so weird that I couldn't eat it. The salad bar was pretty good.. although not fully stocked when I visited. The second time I ordered a sandwich, which was today. I did a "create your own" sandwich and it was not made correctly. There was no tomato on the sandwich which I ordered, and it was clearly on the piece of paper they wrote my order on. There was an abundance of mayo on the sandwich when I said light on the mayo. I actually had to wipe mayo off the sandwich to eat it. The best part of today's meal was the chocolate chip walnut cookies. I'd recommend those for sure. Otherwise, I would say.. stay awake.
