But the materials are budget and there's no craft to it, so getting the design wrong makes an already basic fence that much harder to fix. Communication was poor throughout: no response when we confirmed our availability, then two guys showed up unannounced on a day our neighbor's dog was in the backyard. We live in the Berkeley Hills it was also time to install an alternative to wood (for fire safety). After doing some research, including a neighbor's recommendation, we found Duce. They did a great job for us. Susan was professional throughout the process, from planning to installation. And she or Kayla returned our calls in a timely fashion. The crew was hard working and they worked quickly. They left the site very neat. They were done in 3 days. At the time they did the job Duce used Knotwood aluminum fencing. Knotwood offers a wide range of colors to choose from. And compared to the company our neighbors used, it shipped the material much more quickly. We wanted the fence to look like the fence we were replacing and we couldn't be happier. Showing how Susan takes care of her customers, we requested a small change. She took care of this without any additional charges. As far as cost goes, metal fencing can cost a lot more than wood. The logic behind this was, if Dixon Fence is not on Yelp, it is not good. This is why I am going to rate Dixon Fence on Yelp and share my experience with the fellow Yelpers. I first saw Nick and his crew around my neighborhood just when I was preparing to contact three major, well Yelped, fencing companies around my neighborhood. Then again, no Yelp, no way so I didn't considered having them bid on the job. Below are the summary of the bids I received. Company A: Big, big, big regional fencing company gave me the highest bed price I was going to go with them but they never got back to me. Never mind then, you are off the list. Company B: Well known local company, Pretty good price, but the rep didn't even bother going over their product. Just took measurement, gave me a price, and then left. Company C: Best reviewed company in San Jose area. The estimator actually never came and gave me a quote because I was out of their service area. The estimator was nice enough to give me his personal recommendations of my local fencing companies and Dixon Fence was one of them. Two days after Company C mentioned Dixon Fencing I convinced myself on my drive home to look up Dixon's number and give them a call when I get home. When I turned into my neighborhood guess who I saw? I saw Nick (owner of Dixon Fencing) and his crew working on my neighbor house! I approached Nick and immediately felt a good vibe from him. I showed him my fencing needs and went over my special requirement of having a two-way key lock installed on one of the doors. Since he was working on my neighbor's house he took his time to demonstrate his product and explained to me in great detail about how they construct their fence. His pricing was excellent, close to Company B but with a lot more TLC in the quoting process. I shook his hand and signed the contract with him on the spot. Him and his crew returned to my house two weeks later and built the fence within a day. Nick had to do couple of last minute changes to the overall layout due to problems with the sprinkler pipe location. He just pointed out the problems and let me his work around to the problems. I am pretty sure he spent a little more time than he originally planned due to these issues but he didn't even mention anything about it. He did run into issue when installing the special gate latch I requested him to put in since it was the first time he had to install something like that. The two way gate latch was semi working when they left. To be fair the latch was tricky to install and the printed instruction from the manufacturer was useless. At the end I had to do quite a bit of research before I found the problem and fixed the latch myself. No biggie, not going to ding Nick for this problem. Overall I am very happy about my new fence (construction, appearance, and of course the cost). I will definitely recommend Dixon Fencing to my friends and family.

I can't say enough good things about Dixon Fence! These guys are craftsmen. They work to…read morespecifications, and are sticklers for getting things exactly the way the customer wants it. They are very experienced, and can handle very unusual and complicated designs. We had them build a fence with custom hardware designed to reduce water contact with the posts, and with a channel cut in the header for the slats, and slats of different projections. Nothing was a problem for them. Dixon's pricing is very reasonable, and the guys worked steadily. The fence was finished really quickly. When I asked for a change midstream, it was done with no complaint or extra charge, even though it required taking down some of the work that had already been done. No other contractor I've ever worked with has been that laid back about changing things in stride. I didn't know about Dixon Fence until I saw a fence they built in my neighborhood and asked the home owner who had done the work. I think Nick gets most of his business this way, because his work and that of his crew is just so exceptionally wonderful. In working with them I found that their work ethic and business ethics are just as exceptional.

Ryan has been wanting us to give him a review,(although we weren't ready as he's been leaving us…read morehanging!) so here it goes... ...we had hired Ryan to redo both our 30 year old fence and deck back in February of 2022, and it's now JULY! with a few issues that I need to put out there for people to know exactly what he's doing to his customers and clients. I'm feeling he's being selective to people and the quality of work he wants to leave behind. This is an unacceptable (and mind blowing!) way to run a business! While it was exciting to see the new fence done, there were many issues I noticed that made me think his workers (who he BARELY supervised!) couldn't care less about paying attention to details, taking pride in their work or doing their best to help Ryan's company thrive: nails sticking out of boards, price tag stickers still on the boards, uneven placement of the boards, boards unaligned, rough and scuffed boards facing in rather than out (like I asked him to do twice!) I also need to mention that his workers should have paid a little more attention to detail considering how much we were paying for this. (Also, picking up their lunch/food trash off the side of the hill, guess I'LL DO IT!?!) When they started framing the deck, it took them some time to figure out the frame as we do have an odd shaped backyard and we also wanted to extend the deck towards the RV parking that we have. There were some small issues but it was eventually (the framing) completed. Although Ryan could have been here to supervise his workers and tell them EXACTLY what to do, they just did what they thought was needed and not what we told Ryan, so some extra work was done that didn't needed to be. While we agreed to have the TREX composite decking installed, he told us that it was hard to find the material. After constant inquiries to getting an update on the materials with constant delays and ignoring our calls in getting the materials (and seeing them at both the local Home Depot and Lowes!) he left the unfinished deck there for 3 WEEKS! 3 WEEKS. Once he DID have the material, he started to use the color board that we didn't agree on (a darker composite) and he didn't remember the 3 of us deciding on the color we wanted. So yet another delay in getting this completed. Some times his crew showed up to work on OUR home while some didn't show up at all without any communication to us. Really?! Once the deck was done, multiple issues were noticed: 3 areas that weren't aligned or straight, staples being seen (that were not removed), lack of common sense. Meaning: installing the board and pinching the drip system lines to where they don't work. Even after I specified TO RYAN that this needed to be done properly in order to work. And while the frame was open, I went ahead and installed the landscape wires throughout the frame in order to work. They worked fine when tested pre-install, now they don't due to them possibly damaging/or disconnecting the installed wires. I'm now having to redo the wires AGAIN! BOTTOM LINE: R/C Fences do lousy work, Ryan tends to make excuses after excuses and does not communicate to inquiries for updates, his crew have NO pride in their finished work, couldn't care less about other people's property, and please check out the pictures of what I'm referring to. When he FINALLY agreed to complete the 4 issues we wanted him to correct, he came on his own time and plenty of excuses to boot and not the time was asked him to arrive so he didn't infringe on our personal time. Even today (7/15/22) he's STILL did not complete his end of what we agreed and paid for with what's left to finish and we will have to pay someone else to correct his mistakes. The last time he came (07/10/22) to complete what was left to do (after he whined about this review I posted!) the "KING OF EXCUSES! had a blown tire after going to Home Depot for 2 hours with NO COMMUNICATION to us whatsoever to tell us what was going on. For the amount of money we spent and the hassle and inconvenience he brought into our life and this particular project: this was a HUGE MISTAKE hiring him. We learned a hard lesson and we are making sure no one has to endure this they way we did. Please hire someone more professional, I would hate to have someone else experience the unprofessionalism we had to endure with this guy! Not trying be mean, but I believe in quality craftsmanship for the money we spent. This wasn't that at all.

There was a pre-construction meeting and dates again were discussed a week before start of construction. The gates were going to be installed in 3 - 4 weeks. Dean told us he wasn't sure he could do the 3 weeks but could do 4. The gates ended up going in almost 11 weeks later 7 weeks behind schedule. The worst part was the communication, on every occasion we had to reach out to Dean and say so we are good for Monday the date Dean provided, to be told oh no we are delayed two weeks and given a new date and told it was the iron company's fault. Then again two weeks later no contact so we reach out, good for tomorrow... no delayed two more weeks because of the powder coating. Then two weeks after that same excuse, the powder coater. Not once did Dean initiate the conversations. We had to stop dealing with Dean because he would not return calls so the owner Bob said to contact him directly and he would take care of things. After almost canceling the gates, they were installed almost two months late. We had a bunch of problems with the install from an opener being installed not level and we had to point it out. Then the same opener wouldn't function correctly and the gate never shut the same every time. They finally replaced the motor and it shut correctly. One month later the hinge pin on one of the gates broke so they had to come out again and replace the hinges. Now the gate is not level and still really doesn't shut correctly. The owner Bob came out for a second time 3 weeks ago because when they installed the new hinges the gate is not level, I also showed him a board that I looked down at and was split. I expressed my frustration with the communication through the whole process again with him and he said I'll have Dean come out and check the level and replace the board. After looking at the gate there are multiple boards split from not pre-drilling the holes .... guess what no call... no show for over 3 weeks. Sad way to do business, gate still not level, doesn't shut flush and multiple split boards.

First and foremost, Erick is very obviously a perfectionist and his attention to detail was a wonderful breath of fresh air. Both Erick and his team have an exceptional work ethic. In a period of 4 days (3 of which were rain days) he completed all of the work and went above and beyond to make sure everything looked and worked correctly. If you have a project that involves a retaining wall, a fence, landscaping or building of an outdoor structure, I would highly recommend Erick to you. I liked the job he did and actually had him come back a few days later to replace a couple of broken bricks in my outdoor fireplace. I'd hire him again for any job I needed outside, and may eventually get him to replace the fence.
