I bought a 2018 Toyota Highlander back in March. Less than two weeks later my car wouldn't crank while getting gas. City Auto sent a tow truck after me. He unhooked my battery and charged my battery, so he said. It cranked right up. He told me he would take it in but the battery just needed charging. Being in the middle of Memphis stranded and missing work, and being then, an uninformed female, I chose to keep my car so I could get to work. A couple days later my check engine light comes on. The codes were stating that it was in the fuel system. I was told it needed a gas cap. City Auto said they would order one. Two weeks later, I had not heard from them so I went up there on my lunch break. I asked for Lanny who was the owner of the vehicle I bought. He stated he knew nothing about the gas cap, but he would get it ordered that day. I didn't hear from them for another almost 2 weeks. I went back, Lanny said he had gas cap, I expressed that I was concerned about it fixing the issue because the car when fueling up would not crank, but otherwise ran good. He said, hmm that doesn't sound right, let's see if this fixes it. I said if this doesn't I am at my 30 days. He said Do not worry, if it doesn't I will take care of it. Well it didn't fix it so they charged me $220 to replace the O2 sensors. That didn't fix it so I took it back. They wanted to charge me $2200 to replace the purge valve, vapor canister, and a few other things. I was upset at this point I am in June and this has been ongoing while they have kept my car for weeks at a time. I argued that Lanny said he would fix it. Lauren the customer service rep, who is very condescending and seems like she reads directly from her allowed script, said I asked Lanny and he said he never said that!!! I said bring him in here so he can look me in the face and say that, because I realize this is his word against mine but he most definitely said it! She stated he wasn't available, of course he isn't! Lauren told me, we aren't hiding anything you signed the contract, and what is going on with your car is normal wear and tear!!! I have only had it 2 weeks when this started!!! It is not my wear and tear! Lauren offered me $700 towards the $2200 repair. I didn't have a choice so I had them do the work, the service department was very nice and the lady I dealt with got my repair down to $524. Sadly, it didn't fix the issue! Now I am in August, I give up on City Auto finding the issue, so I take it to Toyota, they inform me I have the wrong battery that cost me $580 and that they put an after market alarm system in my car that has been spliced through my fuels electric system. They advised me to contact Lanny about paying for the work since the issue was from them. So when Lanny didn't answer or return my call, I yet again took off work and drive to speak to him. He tells me that he doesn't owe me anything but is willing to help, (he knows he is responsible or he wouldn't help with anything!) but he doesn't trust Toyota and wants me to bring it to him! Hahaha!!! You had 6 months to get it right and all you have done is lied! Your service department changed my purge valve and left the screws out of the housing and the hose came off stranding me, yet again!!! I do not want them touching my car! Toyota will replace the wires for a reasonable price (under $600) and it will be backed by Toyota. He said he wouldn't deal with Toyota, he said he doesn't trust them saying they don't know what they are doing!!! Lanny is a snake! He is dishonest and I am so disappointed in the way I was treated. They had 6 months to make it right and they only charged me to do things that were not the issue! Sadly, I had the best experience when buying, my salesman, finance guy, and every one else I came in contact with were the nicest people. I felt so happy, so excited, and so taken care of. But as soon as I had an issue they ALL turned their back! I have bought 3 cars from here but will NEVER give them my business again! Crooks is what they are! Matt Jolly was our salesperson and he was exetremely easy to work with. Kirk Catron was also involved and, again, easy to work with. There was no high pressure sales tactics, whcih I appreciate. I'm so surprised to see all the negative reviews for City Auto! My experience was perfect. I found the vehicle I wanted on Autotrader and sent a message asking if it was available. Mary responded to me almost immediately and we set a time for me to go test drive it the next day. It's a gorgeous 2014 Kia Sorento with only 23K miles on it for a great price. The manager came out and chatted with us about the history of the car. It had previously been owned by Pol Gasol and he donated it to Youth Villages who sold it to City Auto. That's why it had so few miles for a 2014. Anyway, Carlos in finance made the paperwork easy, even though there was a ton of it. He explained all the optional warranty add ons, etc, but didn't try to pressure me into any of those things when I declined them. There were a few minor cosmetic details I wanted fixed and Mary had the service department take care of those for no extra charge. I came back a week later and picked up the vehicle and it has been great! The next morning when I cranked I immediately noticed grey/blue smoking coming from tail pipes. I knew something was off and immediately called the dealership manager and the salesperson that sold me the car. This was a Sunday so no one was available, I set an appointment to drop it off the next week and have it checked for an oil leak (which I KNEW it was). I asked for a loner and they don't offer this service, so missed work repeatedly, risked write up and had to uber to and from here three different times to have the car looked at. Each time they came up with "no issues" Luckily I purchased the extended warranty and took it to BMW so get a real answer. They immediately told me there was a rampant oil leak throughout the entire engine along with the power steering going out!!! This was approximately one month later after taking it back to City Auto 3x. Pissed doesn't even begin to describe how I felt! Of course I harassed city auto for a supervisor, manager, ANYONE that could rectify this or exchange the car. The only thing I got was arguments via phone calls from an extremely rude "manager" the woman had an extremely bad attitude and NOTHING was ever done. After meeting with a few lawyers on what could be done, the legal fees exceeded what it was worth to fight them. Considered contacting the local new station and that's still an option. August 25 2021, I cosigned for my son a 2014 BMW x3 from City Auto in Memphis. Under the Uniformed Commercial Code And State and Federal law i do believe this dealership lied and frauded my son and i in which this vehicle has no title. This Bmw has sit parked since november without being able to get it re registered and tagged in tennesseee or indiana due to the bank which is Santander Consumer USA does not currently have nor ever recieved the title from City Auto. the insurance premium of roughly 300 a month what would happen if an accident occurred and the title was needed to settle on insurance. This has caused some issues within my family. The amount of unprofessionalism astounded me at City Auto. I am only writing this review in hopes the owner will review this & reach out to me or at least correct their staffing. Here is a summary of what I experienced. I took my car in for a detailing that was in the contract for the auto shop to do. They tell me several times to drop off my car by 9am and I would have it by 12-1pm. It was not ready at 1:20 when I called and I was told it would be ready in a few more hours. I call at 6:20 and the front counter says the service department closes at 7 so the staff has already left... which makes no sense. I ask her to check if anyone is at service department because I really needed my car back. She says she can't do that even though service department sits closely to the front desk. I call in the morning. 7 times I called, 5, FIVE TIMES they hung up on me! I am not being ugly at all but I am frustrated and concerned. I begin to wonder if something has happened to my car & that is why they are avoiding me. The service department manager calls me back & when I asked her how she can justify to me of why they did not tell me they would be keeping my car over night she says I had no call no show an appointment 3 weeks earlier & that I had no room to be complaining about inconveniences. I had called TWICE that day she is referring to & tried to reschedule but no one answered. It was unfortunate I had to cancel that day but I had an emergency come up & I did try to call the car lot. I get my car back an hour later & when I get home I realize my garage door, phone charging cord & yard signs are missing. When I call back up there, an employer said to me, "Well mam you were supposed to take all belongings out of your car. They probably got thrown away and I don't think I can help you." At this point I just started crying. I told him I needed that to be found because that garage door opener is ACCESS to my home!! I mean how careless are you to throw away a plugged in phone charger and a garage door opener! They call me an hour later to say they found it in the trash. They gave me no sincere apology and did not even wipe my stuff off. This was astoundingly unprofessional. Also when I asked the service department manager for the owners number she said, "I can't give that to you but you should already have that because he gave that to you last week." In a very condescending tone. And he did give me his card the week earlier when I dropped my car off for contracted maintenance. And now I know why he was hanging around the service department. (Because they need to have someone monitor them to give normal customer service)That was the only day since I purchased my vehicle that I received satisfying and expected customer service. I will not refer City Auto Sales of Memphis to anyone! we purchased our vehicle on Saturday August 24, 2024 on August 27, 2024 . just 3 days later the check engine light came on and we dropped the vehicle off at the City Auto Service Center the very next day August 28, 2024. a total of just 4 days off the lot with the vehicle and City Auto offered us NOTHING! we asked repeatedly for a loaner vehicle as we were basically stranded trying to make our lives work with just one vehicle, going to work, taking kids to school and back, getting everyone to ball practice. etc... it was a nightmare! I called City Auto daily and asked for an update as to what was wrong with the vehicle and when they thought it would get repaired or we could get a rental/ loaner car until then.. Every time I called it was something different! They haven't looked at the vehicle yet, to they were waiting on parts to come in, and then the WRONG parts came in, then they had to test drive it. eventually on September 24, 2024 they called and said the vehicle was ready for pick up.. When I asked what was wrong with the vehicle and repairs they still DID NOT have an answer for me ! When I picked up the Vehicle I asked again and they said they would have to find out and email me .. Today is October 1, 2024, and I still have not received any news from City Auto as to what was wrong with the vehicle I purchased and only had in my possession for 3 days and what repairs they had done to it... Awful - Steer clear from this company. **Monday - 4/19/21** I applied for financing on a vehicle. I followed-up my submittal a few hours later with a phone call to the dealership. I spoke to a sales representative. He informed me he would find my application and provide me with a return phone call. I received an alert from the credit bureaus that my credit report had been pulled by the company. I never received a return call. **Tuesday - 4/20/21** I received an automated text message from the dealership asking if I had been helped. I replied "No." I received a text message in return, from an individual, stating "Finance is working on your application now." I never received another response on this day. **Wednesday - 4/21/21** Still no contact from the dealership. I sent an email to the dealership asking for an update on my finance application. I received no response. I also received an automated response from their CRM system, stating that they haven't heard from me. I also responded to this email. The email stated to reply to contact a customer service representative. I received no response. **Thursday - 4/22/21** Still no update to my communications. The company pulled my credit report and failed to contact me after multiple attempts to contact them. Stay away from this company. They will impact your credit score and not contact you. Katherine H. - Please don't leave a reply to my review stating that you are sorry and you would like to make it right by having me reach-out to your company. It has been proven that you don't respond to communications. Worst dealership experience I've ever had. Got preapproved for a vehicle online. Was ready to buy the vehicle. I asked them to ship the car to the other location, as the website mentioned it was free to do per store policy, as the other location was several hours closer to me. I have been given the run around for weeks as to why the car hasn't shipped. I was told repeatedly that the car had been picked up. But at least twice later the car was in the shop getting repairs, after I was promised it had already left their dealership. I was promised once, that the car was at the other store, so I made the almost HOUR drive each way to go test drive and hopefully bring the car home. Air intake parts were broken. Someone had used silicone to hold pieces together. Within 8,000 miles we've spent $9000 on repairs. They obviously got it on a trade in and then happily listed the KBB price as their no hassle list price. This place should be on the BBB radar. Complete unethical sales. Sleazy financing. I am so thankful for City Auto. I went in a couple weeks ago because they had my dream Jeep Wrangler in stock! They made the process of trading in very smooth! I expected to take a little longer because I was trading in and getting a new car but that was no problem. Matt Owen and the entire sales team really took good care of me. Michael Tims and Matt Owen have made this experience the worst I wish I could give them ZERO stars. I've had my new vehicle since October 2nd and City Auto has failed to complete the finance steps on my trade in with my old car. It has been 24 days! That is more than enough time to properly take care of the trade in. This part has been very difficult to work around. I've had to go back to City Auto on two separate occasions due to Matt Owen not providing the correct paperwork for me to sign. It just shows an overall lack of competence and knowledge on how to take care of a trade in. The finance representative yelled at me over the phone and accused me of cursing at her over the phone! If you need a car in Memphis DO NOT go to CITY AUTO. I was told I had all new tires and breaks when I bought my truck little over a month ago. When purchased there were a few minor flaws that were supposed to be taken care of before pick up. I've taken it in several times for the same thing with my battery, and asked them to make sure of any other issues only for them to continually miss something and I have to take it back. Customer service is awful and never answers the phone. You can leave 40 voicemails and will get no response. The absolute worst experience I've ever had! Now I need all new breaks and I'm leaking break fluid. Ridiculous! It would be nice to bring it in to get looked at, but good luck getting someone to call you back or answer besides the nice lady at the front desk. Came from out of state to buy a car here. First they refused to hold the car for even 48 hours while I traveled so I had to buy a plane ticket for a car that could have been sold while I was en route. I asked that they have the paperwork prepared and title ready when I arrived so I wouldn't have to waste a lot of time on the purchase. Spent 6 hours waiting around while my sales guy dicked around, passed my paperwork all over the office, and I waited, twiddling my thumbs, anxious to get on the road for my 12 hour drive home. As a result of the delay I made the drive from 6pm overnight to 6am the next day instead of noon to midnight. Dealer failed to disclose the car had a broken power window. I was promised a 250$ visa gift card to help cover the cost of this repair. Sale was 7/1/19 and as of 7/27 I have not received this compensation nor has someone from city auto contacted me about it. In spite of me paying cash in full, I was not furnished with the title for the vehicle and had to call multiple times, including the corporate offices to get it. The car was what I wanted, but the sales experience sucked long and hard. Beware any extras, credits or offers- anything not taken care of at the time of purchase won't be, as I'm still waiting for the 250$ I was promised. (Update 8/10/19 I did finally receive the gift card as promised, more than 30 days after the sale, but it took posting this review for it to happen.) Beware the title work won't go smoothly and go prepared to spend all day even for a simple cash deal. Really glad I didn't need to finance this car, but if you do I'd suggest you secure a loan somewhere else and not trust their finance department. I purchased a vehicle from City Auto. Upon inspecting the vehicle I notice the window had a chip with a split. We went inside did paperwork and put it on "We Owe". I get a call saying they can't repair the window but it's a no spreading guarantee. Coming into 2 weeks I discovered the heat doesn't work in rear. I called and was told to bring it back. As I'm leaving the parking lot I get a call saying I'm responsible for the heat from the "MANAGER" SAMMY and that my warranty only covers transmission and engine. Arrived and was told that no one under 21 can test drive a car with a V8 engine, even though I was assured over the phone I would be able to. Was told I could test drive a car if I brought a down payment. Slimy practices, just want to get you in the door to try and get into your wallet. Don't shop here. read more

I loved my used vehicle I bought from them, but it was ongoing hassle up until the day it broke down on me (in a dangerous part of town, I might add) less than 30 days after the purchase. Shortly after the initial purchase, I had to go up there again to re-sign my papers since they made a mistake on my payment due dates. This was an inconvenience since I work two jobs and I actually had to take off a day from one of them to go do that. The other seemingly on-going saga involved my MS tags. It took them an entire month to get sent to me. I was pulled over by a MS police officer and warned that if I got caught again without a proper tag 7 business days after the sale of the vehicle, I would get a ticket. Luckily, I was never pulled over again. (In the meantime, I called regularly to check on my license plates at the suggestion of more than one police officer. Each time I felt like I was being treated like a pest by the person answering my calls.) Once the weather began to heat up, I noticed the air did not blow cool in the vehicle and knew I would have to get that checked out. I was annoyed that even if that was a minor issue, it is unsettling to pay a hefty downpayment, make a first payment, and then have work done on it I cannot afford since all my monthly financial resources from both my jobs have gone to that downpayment. Finally, the belt apparently came off my engine on I-240. I was forced to get off at the Getwell exit and as smoke rose from the hood and my power steering went out, I was unable to turn the wheel anymore. I called my roadside assistance first, and then called City Auto. I was in a panic and didn't know whether I was to have the car towed to the dealer or my own mechanic. I was hoping for some help, but instead was quickly and rudely transferred to their warranty department and given a number I already had. I called the warranty people and opened a claim. The next morning, I was quoted at around $856.00 worth of repairs. It turns out, my warranty only covered the water pump, so after my $200 deductible, the warranty only covered about $49 worth of work. I could not afford to have the AC fixed, so I settled to pay for the essential work. (A belt, serp. belt, thermostat, R&R water pump, t. belt, seals, water pump, radiator flush, plus labor.) In the meantime, I was without a vehicle and late to work one night because I had to find a ride. I understand that used cars will require upkeep, but I think it's incredibly unfair to have one with so many problems and to completely break down on you after paying so much money less than 30 days one drove it off the lot. The warranty is a joke and I wish I didn't even have it. I will now be late on my mortgage and without money for about a month. Plus the AC is still not fixed. And June is coming up. I emailed the GMs at City Auto and have not received a response as of yet. I am very disappointed with this place. Nothing short of a some kind of immediate refund will satisfy me because I will be going hungry very soon. read more

Bought a used van from City Auto in January 2017. They knew it was a holiday (banks were closed) and I was from out of state, so they pounded me with a 17% interest rate despite having a 790 credit score. I took the punch with intent to refinance after I got home. I have now spent over $4K rebuilding the engine that they told me with confidence had no issues. Expect the stereotypical used car sleaze when dealing with these guys. read more

City Auto sold me a vehicle with an engine misfire on #2 cylinder a 2012 infinity Qx56. They said no problem bring it to BMI. 2 trips to BMI and two weeks later the problem was still occurring although suddenly the service engine didn't stay on but it blinked when the misfire. The second mechanic said it wasn't supposed to do that at first then he couldn't fix it either. So we waited two hours for the hr lady to have a meeting. She acted like this kind of problem was unheard of and claimed I was driving the vehicle too hard saying it was a luxury vehicle then claiming she couldn't find where it was covered in there 30 day warranty. An engine misfire can be caused by a lot of things most of what she read off could cause it. She canceled my third opinion by mechanic and when I threatened litigation the salesman told me I could trade it in and buy another one from them. I'm now stuck with a vehicle that I don't know what's wrong and I can't afford to fix it. I feel like city auto knows what is wrong and just don't want to make it drivable. read more

Literally a waste of time had 5k to buy a vehicle. I liked one of their trucks so I did my finance application online to safe time I go in and they lost it had to redo it they tell me if I want to get the vehicle I liked I needed 8.5k as down payment I really didn't want to spend that but I really liked their truck so I brought 8.5k up there thinking since I was approved already everything was going to go smooth well I come in and had to wait like and hour to get attended once they got to me and reviewed all the paper work they tell me I need a co-sign or more cash as down. I live 30 minutes away and drove back and fourth for two days for them to come up with that. I recommend anywhere else but that dealership read more

Tried to use a credit card for a deposit they do not except credit cards should have been the first red flag. Told me I had to next day a check just to hold a vehicle. Very shifty business practice if you're local I highly suggest you read read the reviews and do your own do diligence on this company. They have a lot of red flags a lot negative reviews that go un-answered. Not a place I ever plan to do busy with not do I suggest anyone else make that mistake.
