What an adventure... had a great time on a small group tour. Chris was fantastic, spent time checking on our favorite styles, making personal recommendations based on them. When we were out in Pittsburgh, Wifey and I knew we'd have a lot of time to ourselves (my son was participating in a regional chorus event) and one of the things we wanted to do was the City Brew Tour. What better way to discover a city's great beers that having a beer expert drive you around in a small bus to four breweries and talking about the breweries, their brewing processes and tasting great beer...oh, and add in a tasty meal. Beer bliss! Our tour guide, Jesse, brought us to four breweries - Eleventh Hour Brewing, Couch Brewery, Penn Brewery Allegheny City Brewing and are each one we did did tastings of 3-5 types of beer. I love good beer, but I do have my likes and dislikes so there weren't many surprises for the kinds of beers I liked throughout the night. Loved the beer at our first stop of the night, Eleventh Hour Brewing. We received a nice tour of the brewing area and discussed the processing while enjoying some of their tasty treats. The staff here could not have been nicer and they were very accommodating with our questions and they knew their beers. I'm not an IPA guy, but the one we tried was pretty good. I would love to hang out here if I lived in the area. Our second stop was Couch Brewery and it was a really fun place with excellent beer. Kind of retro with lots of TVs, comfortable places to sit and hang out and they do trivia here too (after reading some reviews, bingo night also seems like a hit). Another place I'd like to hang out if I lived here. Unfortunately, I wasn't keeping track of the KINDS of beer we tried, but I do remember I had a great dark beer here - oatmeal stout maybe (plus, the tasters we had here were more like full beers. The place was pretty full already by the time we were here, but the b-ball area where they do their brewing was pretty cool. Penn Brewery was our third stop of the night and, thankfully, included our meal as I was feeling the previous stops at this point. Penn was the most 'commercial' of our four stops, and by that I simply mean that their beers can be found pretty easily outside the local area. Loved the beers here, but since I wasn't keeping track I can't tell you what I had. Our meal here was very good - set up in a beer hall fashion - and really hit the spot at the right time (if I remember correctly it was a brat with some kraut, a pierogi, some veggies and half a sandwich - maybe a Reuben of some sort with a delish red cabbage on pumpernickel and came with some great cookies as well). Penn Brewery seemed like the kind of bar I'd have liked in college. I'd recommend this place for sure! Allegheny City was our last stop on the tour and, though small, was a really fun place that was dog-friendly...always a plus in my book. As with our first four stops I wasn't keeping perfect track of whet we were trying, but I remember not liking a couple I tried here. I'm not an IPA guy and I know we had an IPA and also the cider and I didn't love them. I also had one of the Belgian Tripels and if I remember correctly it was almost like a sour- wasn't bad, I just wasn't expecting it. I'm sure they've got some great beers here, I just didn't have one that screamed 'excellent!' I still loved the place and it was a great place to finish the evening. Had a great experience with the After Hours Brew Tour. We had a pretty full van of 12. Brian was our guide and easily found him in front of the Marriot City Center. The van is hard to miss, but honestly a Kiss concert was about to kick off and there were people everywhere. We hit four different breweries, 2 in the Lawrenceville area and 2 on the North side. The breweries were 11th Hour, Hop Farm, Penn and Allegheny. At each stop we were educated on the brewing process and how different places did different things. We were also able to sample 4 beers from each place. Some good, some great, some ehhh, it's your taste. At Penn Brewery we were served dinner with beer pairings. The food was really good, the beer went well with it. At each place we had a bit of time to go to tap rooms and purchase a full drink or take away growlers and such. The whole experience was great. It was a nice way to find a bunch of new beers. See a few breweries and get a bit of an education while being driven around. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone and I'd love to do it again in another city. read more

Took the "after hours" brew tour last week. Tour guide Brian was extremely knowledgeable about the beer-making process. Certainly an adequate number of samples were had at the 4 breweries toured. The only complaint was that the dinner at Penn Brewery was the 3rd of 4th stops. That means you're sampling beers on likely an empty stomach (tour departed at 5:30) so several of us felt the food should've been at the first or second brewery. No food till the 8pm hour not ideal! read more

We loved our tour! We did the after hours (5:30-10:30) tour which was great timing, the breweries were busy but we got to sneak away to the back to get a full experience. At first, I was a little skeptical about spending $100 just for a brewery tour, but it was well, well worth it. There's four stops (I'm assuming they change by day/week/etc) and each stop offers 3 or 4 tasters. Eric was our tour guide and he truly made the tour awesome. He was great with the schedule, giving us ample time and notice to use the bathroom or how much time was left. He kept it fun on the ride between breweries and checked on all the groups if we were split up during stops. I'd highly recommend reserving a spot for a tour in whatever city you're in! read more

Neither my fiancé or I had been to Pittsburg and we found these guys from a Groupon AD. The idea sounded absolutely great.. 4 breweries we were driven to (in a foreign city) plus dinner! How can you be a that? Well they exceeded our expectations. The tour guide we had (beard Eric) was absolutely fantastic. He gave us so much insight at how each brewery operates and we were brought to 4 very unique breweries that also showed us 4 different areas of the city. Even if you're a local you'll be brought to areas you didn't know existed (one brewery was a couple months old!) we loved our evening and highly recommend anyone who knows or doesn't know the city of Pittsburg check these guys out! read more

We had a great time on our tour, thanks to our tour guide and the breweries that gave us a peak behind the scenes. We especially loved our experience at Brew Gentleman, the beers were unique and delicious, and they are clearly passionate about their mission and brew process. Overall, a very solid experience. Considering the amount of beer that you drink, and the included transportation, the $70-80 price tag is reasonable. Our tour guide was very knowledgable and professional. My only issue is that you cannot pick the breweries that you visit and they are randomized a day before the tour/event. read more

My only negative comment and I understand this is a personal preference, but I hated the place that only had the sour beers (did not want to name names, but they know the place I mean). We had a great time doing the 3 hour Sip of Pittsburgh tour last night. I was with my husband and my son along with 5 other gentlemen part of a bachelor party. I am not the biggest lover of beer (wine is my first choice) but our tour guide Clayton was so knowledgeable and explained each beer that I actually tasted (and finished) every one and learned so much that I can't wait to visit a brewery again! We had so much fun on our City Brew Tour this past Saturday morning. Bearded Eric our tour guide was wonderful and definitely made the tour! The van picked us up right on time at the Marriott City Center downtown and off we went after getting a name tag and lanyard with beer info. The tour started off with introductions for ice breakers, a very brief history of beer (thank goodness) and an overview of the 4 breweries we were going to. Our first stop was Aurochs for their gluten free beer which was one of my favorite stops. Next up was Cobblehaus which was just ok-bummer they charged you $1 for the popcorn. For the third stop we had lunch at Penn Brewery which was really tasty and a much bigger meal than I thought we would be given. Our last stop was Allegheny City Brewery which was a lot of fun and had great beer. I highly recommend this tour for out of towners, bachelor or bachelorette parties or for local brewery lovers like myself. read more
