Perhaps a better name would be "No-Allergy Samich Shop." It for sure is not a cafe: they have only regular and decaf and it's not ready to go. There is a counter to the left as you come in, followed by an unattractive cooler case with signs on it. In between is a bakery case that is small but had a nice selection when I was there. I ordered a cup of decaf and a small chocolate almond cupcake, for a price of $8. I declined the plastic box and sat down with the cupcake in an upholstered chair opposite the counter. I thought my coffee would be right up but it took many minutes. I almost left. The cupcake was small but good (fluffy cake, sugary frosting). Then I noticed the sign that said everything was gluten and dairy-free. Surprise! When the coffee was ready, the cream was put in for me. I guess it was nondairy. The coffee was warm like a keurig makes. I had noticed Lunch menus in a wall pocket and Brunch menus behind the counter. So this place is actually full restaurant for people with gluten and dairy allergies. The lunches all seemed to cost ~$18 and seemed inventive. Fries were available as a specialty. We were greeted by a friendly employee who was patient, pleasant and efficient. She thoroughly explained the pastry case and gave us time to make our selections. I've been here a few times for lunch, but this was the first time I came for brunch. My little cousin and I came in around 1 o'clock on a Saturday afternoon. She wanted a breakfast sandwich and we also split the chicken and waffles. Everything came out hot and fresh. I've had the bessttttt chicken and waffles in Florida so it's hard to live up to the hype but I can confidently say that the chicken and waffles at city cafe is top 2 best chicken and waffles I've ever had. They put a brown sugar dusting on top of the fried chicken and it's a GAME CHANGER. It was sooo good. Also, their bagels are TOP TIER. I love how everything is gluten and dairy free. The bread has the expected odd mealy texture, the coffee creamer is basically white water, etc. But in general the food is acceptable, and generous in portions. The chucken and waffles features sugar and cinnamon crusted chicken, which was an unexpected twist, although as a duabetic it was a tad sweet for me , would be better with a saviry waffle to counteract the sugar in the chicken. Staff were friendly and the inside had a nice café feel. we were able to order both brussels sprout appetizers and a few other things for us to share. Two years ago we ordered a gluten free dairy free cake from here and EVERYONE (not just those with celiac) said it was the best cake they'd ever had. The reviews were hard to beat! So this past winter we ordered another cake for a party, but in a different flavor. We went to pick up the order at the specified time and they were closed lol, but we got someone to the store and got the cake home. Everyone said it was gross - too sweet without any flavor. It was meant to be lemon but just tasted like sugar. It's still talked about in our close circle as a bad experience. That was disappointing but we hoped it was a fluke and just ordered a third cake; the same order as the amazing cake from two years ago. It was awful. I had such high expectations and everyone was eager to have it again, only for it to be grainy and dull. It fell apart like a stale brownie and the flavor of the filling was really difficult to notice. I don't know what has changed in two years but I wish they'd go back! We literally threw away half of the cake at a party with 35 people; after seeing others try the cake our guests opted to just not have any. Even my 10 year old niece didn't want more than her first bite. A child who lives on sweets! The styling of their cakes is a bit outdated but for great flavor and texture we are obviously willing to overlook that. If only they'd bring back the magic from years ago! Some of the best Gluten Free food I've ever had. The quality is outstanding and it's almost impossible to tell that's it's entirely GF. I drove in from Syracuse to visit a friend who brought me here knowing I am G-free. This is the best G-free meal I have had since starting this lifestyle change about 7 years ago. The place smelled amazing from the minute I walked through the door. The portions were great, and the flavor was PERFECTION! Can't wait to make the 55 minute drive again to try something different than the PERFECT Crispy chicken sandwich. SO MANY choices!
