We stumbled across this place on our last vacation. It's our second time back on this vacation. Great food!

Whoever said "Breakfast is the most important meal of the day" is a kindred spirit of mine. As such, a classic diner is somewhere you may find me on a random weekend morning. Recently I had the chance to check out the Castlewood Café, situated not far from Utica University. Upon entering, you'll realize it's not going to win any style points. The interior is a bit dated, though not in the charming 50's diner sort of way. However, seating was plentiful, and seeing many of the tables with patrons was a good sign. I ordered the classic "Queen's Breakfast" - 2 eggs any style, hash browns, toast, a sausage patty, and 2 bacon slices. This is a pretty classic order for me and a good way for me to decide if it was worth the drive. We wanted to try a grilled blueberry muffin, but they had run out. My counterpart ordered the fruit crepes - a bit too much sweet for me in the morning, but they were very happy with their choice. The food arrived fairly quickly, a bit of a surprise with the crowd they had on hand. The eggs were perfectly cooked, the rye toast was great, and the breakfast meats were on point. The only disappointment was the hash browns. They were cooked very well, a bit crispy on the outside, soft in the inside, but were lacking in much flavor. Our server was attentive, though busy, and seemed a bit flustered at times. Overall no issue with the service we received though. I'd be more than happy to recommend the Castlewood for those looking for some good breakfast comfort food.

Very busy on a Saturday Morning... it's a big place... bigger than it looks... it has a great atmosphere, clean, including the restrooms , I had a skillet...delicious, my wife had a breakfast sandwich with coleslaw on it... looked amazing ... and our youngest had the French toast... WOW !!!! ... $60 for the three of us ... not bad for what you get ...

Walked in and had a server make eye contact, then quickly turn away to finish whatever she was doing. Another server came up to seat us just minutes later, but took her time coming back to us at the table (there were only 2 other tables sat in the entire restaurant). The appetizer, Castlewood Sampler, came out quick and tasted good. The main meals took forever to come out...The meatloaf and riggies were not the flavors we liked, but not bad either. The kiddos didn't complain about their meals, but between slow, unfriendly service and mediocre food, we see no reason to return.

    Pretty picture

Hands down one of the best places in the area for breakfast. Came here on Easter and it was packed. Surprisingly didn't wait that long, about 5 mins. It seemed like everyone was out with their family for breakfast. I ended up ordering the King's breakfast; came with two eggs, two strips of bacon, a sausage patty, hash browns, and two pancakes. Everything tasted delicious. No complaints on the food or the service. I couldn't even finish the pancakes, that's how filling it was. The staff was quick and friendly. I'll be back.

After eating breakfast out in all the local places scores of times, I have concluded that Castlewood is exceptional. The breakfast is very good, with some really different and interesting choices on the menu. I normally get an American Cheese Omelet - and its awesome. I think they make a really thin omelet and then fold it in, making several thin layers of egg with cheese in between. That results in a great tasting omelet with a texture that is pretty awesome. On Food TV they would call it mouthfeel. Its served with a slice of orange, toast and home fries that are awesome. We've had other things like fried eggs - simple you say? Yes but they always come exactly as you ordered them - over easy, medium or hard - they get it and it's perfect. The food is always hot and they obviously care about how it looks on the plate. It's never just slopped on like many place do when they get busy. Castlewood pays attention to details. The place is large with tables and booths and plenty of parking too. Very clean and service is fast with professional waiters. We have never been there for dinner but will be very soon. Easily a 5 star place recommended by this often picky writer.

The food is acceptable. Asparagus was over cooked and the salmon was dried out. Rest of the meals were fine. A good stop, just not great.

We arrived just as a local band was getting ready for a three hour set (4-7pm) on a Sunday afternoon. Cover charge was $5.00 each. There were quite a few people there, but there was still room to sit in the spacious outdoor deck/stage area. There's also an outside bar area to grab a drink, instead of having to run inside to the regular bar. Food was available, but we did not try anything. The indoor vathrooms were pretty small, but served the purpose. The music was very good, the sound was loud enough, without blaring out of the speakers. There's a roof over the outside deck, but it's in different sections, so the sun does shine though in areas, making it a little hot when it's hitting you. Our only complaint would be the amount of people that were smoking. There is no way to get away from the cigarette smoke wafting in your face. Other than that, it seems like a great venue to enjoy some live music, a drink and a bite to eat. We definitely plan on going back.

There is a counter to the left as you come in, followed by an unattractive cooler case with signs on it. In between is a bakery case that is small but had a nice selection when I was there. I ordered a cup of decaf and a small chocolate almond cupcake, for a price of $8. I declined the plastic box and sat down with the cupcake in an upholstered chair opposite the counter. I thought my coffee would be right up but it took many minutes. I almost left. The cupcake was small but good (fluffy cake, sugary frosting). Then I noticed the sign that said everything was gluten and dairy-free. Surprise! When the coffee was ready, the cream was put in for me. I guess it was nondairy. The coffee was warm like a keurig makes. I had noticed Lunch menus in a wall pocket and Brunch menus behind the counter. So this place is actually full restaurant for people with gluten and dairy allergies. The lunches all seemed to cost ~$18 and seemed inventive. Fries were available as a specialty. There were a lot of tables in the long, cool, dark room. It seemed like a decent place to have an undisturbed meal while talking with friends.

However, if there is a chance that Swifty's management may read this, along with fellow diners, it may be helpful for the future. The overall experience, food, and service was good. Clearly, this place and its 2 sister locations know how to be successful. But what we experienced could either be because a rogue chef or location manager is trying to cut corners - or - it could be the philosophy of the company to try and nickel-and-dime the customer to reduce costs and take advantage of those who won't notice. My boys and I ordered 20 wings to start, my oldest had a burger to follow, and my younger really wanted to focus on wings, so only ordered fries. I had the. Cheeseburger wrap with onion rings and coleslaw. Wings: crispy, tasty, and really good blue cheese. BUT...when they came to the table, the baskets looked light. So... WE COUNTED THEM. ONLY 17. My (as the menu clearly states) "half pound burger in a wrap" was probably 1/4 of a pound light. Wait til you see the photo. So, all the good service and reasonably good food was ruined by Swifty's trying to either take advantage of customers incrementally hundreds of times a day (order by order) - or - they have a location chef and manager who tolerate food leaving their kitchen that is not as advertised or up to the standard which allowed them to open 3 locations. It's one or the other. Will we be back? I don't know. We really wanted this to be great. We live in the Northwest Corner of CT, my son goes to college in Rochester, this location is literally (to the mile) half-way between. We make the trip weekly due to his athletics schedule. We wanted to be regulars. Will probably look elsewhere next time. 2 stars for the front of the house service. It was excellent. And the blue cheese dressing. It was fantastic.
