Just had our first visit for my two cats and had just had to get a review down to mention what a wonderful experience it was. They were so gentle and loving with my little ones that I felt at ease the whole time. Annnndd, just like that ...I'm gonna need a new cat vet . I don't like the vibe here anymore . I've tried giving it the benefit of the doubt . I used Dr. McKinstry for years at city cat vet and adored her and her humble office before she retired --they kept the name and did a Reno but they have just more and more rude every time I'm there Over the years . I always give the benefit of the doubt that when people act bristly this way , the work environment just can't be great and they aren't being treated well . I'll be clear it's not the actual vets , but the general front desk area . Also poor follow up communication and even mixing up meds on my 2 cats . There is one particularly irksome woman who is always bristly but it's also an overall vibe of teetering on the edge of " I can't be bothered ...to just shy of outright rude so she can back pedal if she is called out on said edgy attitude. Don't piss on my boots and tell me it's raining I have literally stood at the door / window (which specifically says don't knock on glass which I finally did ) for several minutes smiling in the rain and making eye contact while 4 people stare at me to buzz the door open and don't even acknowledge me (they previously had the door locked for many months during Covid but now it opens so I guess they couldn't be bothered to give me a friendly nod to enter . ) I have also been loudly shamed and made to feel like a general Asshole because I dared to miss the mask wearing sign even when I've politely excused myself to grab mine out of the car. But at the end of the day it comes down to where I want to spend my money at a private businesses with irritated staff who don't want to be at their job . Overall, City Cat is great. Been going here for almost two years with our three cats and loved all of the vets we saw the first year. It's always a calm environment and I like that they take their time with each visit and answer any and all questions. It's great they specialize in cats and have a ton of equipment on site to do most anything. There are some cons. - appointments take a long time to get. I have to schedule months in advance for routine visits and if your cat is sick, they can't get you in. You have to always go to the emergency vet for that which is frustrating and expensive. - front desk, on the phone, is not the nicest. In person they're always lovely. Whenever I call, I'm made to feel like a burden and they don't have time for me. - one newer vet is really awful. She made me feel like a horrible pet parent when my cat was having an issue that I was clearly trying to remedy with multiple appointments. She was derogatory and rude and had me sobbing from the way she was making me feel. I now request explicitly to not see her. If you only go here for routine visits and don't expect to see your vet for emergencies, and can deal with the occasional gruffness, it's still the only place I recommend. read more

The vets performed a Lance/drain procedure on my cat and within an hour of bringing her home, she died. They did not dress her wound properly and made me bring her home in terrible condition. We've been bringing our cats here since it was Cat Vet of South Street. All the vets, vet techs and vet nurses are wonderfully engaged, thoughtful about the cat's needs and serious about vet care. It is not cheap by any means - not sure what more I can say about that other than, don't be surprised by this. Pets are not cheap. (There are organizations, such as PAWS, which will provide needs-based low-cost pet care, spaying and neutering, so no one has a good excuse to not care for their pets.) Also, I like their politics but they will care for your cat no matter what your politics. read more

Dr. Humenick and all the staff at City Cat Vets were the very best vets I have ever had the pleasure of bringing my cats too, and that is a tough category, because every vet I have ever met has genuinely loved animals. What set this primary care appointment apart is we got to go into the exam room with our cats! And the vet and staff examined them in front of us and kept us informed about exactly what they were seeing and what we should do about it. I have never learned so much in a vet visit and Dr. Humenick was very generous with his knowledge and his time. My cat is an indoor cat with anxiety issues so it didn't help that two women brought a dog into the waiting room - yes a DOG - while I was there with my cat. My cat proceeded to freak out in her carrier and by the time the vet saw her had turned into an uncontrollable beast. It took two techs and the vet to deal with her. I think it would have been better for everyone if the dog was not there and had not been brought into the treatment area before my cat..I waited for over a month for this appointment. Finally, a veterinary practice that truly "gets" cats! City Cat Vets' doctors and staff do everything possible to take the fear out of veterinary exams. First: it's cats-only. (I love the doggos, but my cats do NOT.) Next, for my spicy senior kitty who gets a little, um, homicidal during vet visits, the vet prescribed a low-dose medicine that took the edge off without drugging her. Magic! Kitty got her first exam in years, and nobody had to get stitches. CCV follows cat-friendly guidelines like no scruffing and allowing the guardian to stay with their cat during the exam. My cats are never going to love the vet, but at least the experience is no more scary or uncomfortable than it has to be. I also appreciate that they are willing to try more conservative measures first before launching into expensive tests and treatments. The doctors do a great job of staying in communication, chatting over email and even taking calls on weekends to make sure I'm fully informed about my cats' care. We've been through a cancer scare and some chronic senior cat issues, but I trust the vets here to give me good advice. read more

My 20 year old cat was just diagnosed with oral cancer. Dr. Andeer called me from the OR to tell me. She was straightforward and very kind. I was trying not to cry on the phone as I told her to euthanize my cat pal. She was sensitive to that and did not say anything that would have tipped me over into full on bawling and howling. Rather than try to rack up more office charges with palliative care that would only keep my fur friend around for at most a few more months with many office visits, she let me know that I was making the right decision. She offered me the cat's ashes, but I am a believer in letting it all go to The Light and not hang on when someone or something has gone, so I said no. Dr. Andeer is an exceptionally wonderful person, a fine doctor and a top notch diagnostician. She and her staff (shout out to Kait) made this very low time in my life as bearable and good as it could be. I am forever grateful to all of them and going forward, my cats will be coming here exclusively for all their health and wellness needs-expensive Uber trips be damned. Saying good bye to a 4 legged family member is never easy but the folks at City Cat Vets got me through this amazingly well. I've been here 3 times with 2 cats and I want to say the feeling I get from this Veterinarian practice is just unprofessional, slipshod, and informal, sort of like a hole-in-the-wall restaurant 'cept this is a hole-in-the-wall vet, in other words "ghetto". The doctors and staff seem to be crazy for cats but the practice itself doesn't seem methodical, scientific, or disciplined enough for what I would expect when it comes to medical care! Here are some things that just rubbed me the wrong way: 1. I was chided by the receptionist about my carrier saying that my cat can escape and run into the street and get killed. I have a cloth carrier (called Cat in the Bag, http://cat-in-the-bag.com/ look it up) that's basically a bag/purse with a hole where the cat's head can stick out. The opening has a Velcro strap to tighten the hole around the cat's neck as a collar. I love this bag and walked 5 blocks to the vet with my cat in it, no problem. Anyway I was told to never bring my cat in this carrier again. Okay, fine they care about my cat's safety, but the following week for a follow up, I saw some guy bring his cat in a microwave cardboard box where it could jump out. So why is a ghetto cardboard box with an open top okay but my bag (specifically designed for cats) wasn't? 2. My cat was given a vitamin B shot without my consent in the back room while they collected a urine sample. I did not have a chance to deny this shot. 3. While my cat was in the back, she was completely traumatized and peed herself and I was told she sat in her own pee in a cage (was given a diuretic so she would give a pee sample). When I picked her up, she was brought back to me with her head stuffed inside the bag and the Velcro hole all the way scrunched shut and dripping wet smelling like urine. What the heck did you do to my cat and what's in the back room to cause this much stress? I've never seen my cat this traumatized. At another hospital, she was even given minor surgery (vet had to cut her skin open to drain an abscess) and even that visit did not traumatize her this much. 4. I was recommended to buy Science Diet cat food to alleviate my cat's bladder problem. It's expensive and has plant fillers cats shouldn't even eat. Sure all vet's "recommend" it but I did not expect a holistic, natural, homeopathic vet to recommend this garbage. 5. The following month, I took my other cat in because he was squirting "butt juice". I read on the internet that he might need his anal glands expressed. The doctor took a look at him, and told me there was nothing she could do. Okay, what about expressing his anal glands? I felt she was avoiding the suggestion because anal glands are stinky and she didn't want to bother...but she charged me a physical fee anyway. $50+ for petting my cat and nothing was really done! 6. During the exam, the vet took a regular drug store thermometer (not even professional-grade thermometer) that was sitting in a cup of blue liquid and stuck it in my cat's butt to measure his temperature. That didn't seem very hygienic. How many butts has that thermometer been in? I get it they are cats, not humans, but I would expect the medical equipment to be more sterile regardless. Other vets I've been to used disposable tips or thermometer covers. 7. Whole place has an old decrepit feeling and it smells a bit cat urine in the waiting room. This hospital is not like one of those pretentious VCA hospitals where they try to sell you expensive tests and tell you your cat has a heart murmur and need constant follow ups or recommend surgery for your cat's anus to alleviate scooting (I've had vets recommend me these ridiculous things), but at the same time I don't feel like this practice is professional or formal enough. They seem to treat all cats here like they are dumpster cats that don't really need to be taken seriously like your pet children. That's fine I guess because (most moggy) cats are hardy animals, but on the other hand, they still try to up-sell you the expensive Science Diet like those pretentious VCA hospitals. My other 2 cats are hardy street cats that I rescued from outside, but I just got a 3rd cat, a purebred British Shorthair kitten (that cost me waaay too much that I don't even want to say). I will not be getting him neutered here! He's probably has a weaker immune system compared to your run of the mill dumpster cats and I do not trust this Vet to be meticulous or professional enough to perform surgery on him. The prices are reasonable here compared to Rittenhouse Animal Hospital (other vet I've been to in the area) but I just don't think the level of care and professionalism is the same! read more

I have been to at least 6 different vets in Philly and this place stands on a level of excellence all alone. The Doctor is very old school, has compassion for your pet and for you, and the staff all seem more like a family than a business (although impeccably efficient). I did not often have typical issues with the cats I rescued off my block and didn't always know all the history surrounding their illnesses but Dr. Mckinstry never once shamed me, always took the time to do what she could, was accurate and alleviated my cats' suffering with both traditional western medicines/techniques and traditional Chinese medicines/techniques. I would trust Dr. Mckinstry not only to treat any animal I care for but also to treat me with respect and compassion. She is phenomenal!!! read more

Not feeling the change! Ever since the change in ownership by the Queen Village Animal Hospital folks, prices have gone up and the feeling that everything will be alright with my cat has gone down. I now get a bad vibe in this joint!. They no longer offer discounts for senior citizens or longtime patrons and even have the audacity to charge $30.00 for a blood pressure check. I'm sure their machine was paid for many times over at their other location. If my doctor did this to me I would definitely rethink having her as my physician. Dr. McKinstry has been my cat's vet for over 17 years, keeping her healthy and getting her through several serious health incidents with excellent outcomes. I trust her implicitly with my kitty's health and well-being. If Dr. McKinstry leaves this practice, I will most definitely follow her even though it will be a hardship to reach her in Kennett Square. She takes the time with you to really listen to what is going on and makes sure that all of your questions are answered. My cat has a lot of health issues and I've expressed to City Cat Vets that I am a college student and need to keep as many things to a budget as possibly and they've been more than understanding. They always recommend the cheapest treatment first and give good advice on prescriptions and how to get the best deal. I recently moved to Philly, and am so glad I found this vet! The appointment was very quick, but Dr. Andeer still gave my cat a thorough examination. She also talked to me about different prescription food options to help get my cat back to a healthy weight. I was given a sample bag of food, which I really appreciated. The office also sent me contact info for a pet sitter in the area since I am in need. I really like that this office is cat only, and there were two cute & friendly resident cats that greeted me. I thought the price for the appointment was fair. It was actually less than I paid at my old vet, but feel that this vet's quality of care was higher than my previous vet. I had read a lot of favorable reviews of this office and brought a few foster cats here for check ups and vaccinations since they were right down the street from my apartment. When I decided to adopt one of them, I found that she had an evolving case of ringworm (she's a Himalayan, so it became obvious pretty quickly). I brought her to the doctor again, who told me first that she had mange (her screen came up clear), then scabies (again), and then decided she had a food allergy and asked that I buy expensive allergy food at her office. Meanwhile, the cat had lost about 50% of her hair and was covered in red, round, itchy lesions, and I got ringworm, as well. This went on for three months (three. whole. months.), while the vet continued to assure me that it was a food allergy and I should be patient. I finally took the poor thing to the VCA Cat Hospital in Rittenhouse Sq when my own ringworm came back a second time (I got it from kitty, cleared it up, and promptly caught it from her again). And finally, my suspicions were confirmed: the vet did a culture but, before she even sent off the results, gave me meds because my cat was (and I quote) a "poster kitty for ringworm" and said that she was shocked the other vet hadn't been able to diagnose such a simple ailment. She was very polite, but you could tell she though the vet on South St was an idiot--and I felt like one, too, for shelling out for "allergy treatments" and my own dermatologist bill when all kitty needed was proper treatment for the blatantly obvious condition she had, that anyone, especially someone with as much experience as Dr McKinstry, should have been able to asses. Within two weeks, she was doing MUCH better--after a month and a half, we were both completely ringworm free, and have been ever since. Moral of the story? Don't trust a vet who can't treat for even basic ailments (on a side note, they were less expensive on South St than anywhere else in the city--but I'd rather pay the exorbitant fees at VCA Cat Hospital and know my cat's getting the best treatment). The best (worst?) was when I went back for a checkup after the ringworm had cleared up, the VCA vet noted a small growth on my cat's lower gum that the South St vet had convinced me was just a benign growth. A biopsy later, turns out it was an invasive and rare form of cancer, and we barely caught it in time. Had I continued to go to South St, who knows how bad it would have gotten. Stay away. Seriously. For every three patients she diagnoses correctly, there must be one like my cat whose actual life might be at risk. read more

She squeezed us in for an appointment every time. The other day, we scheduled an appointment to put him to sleep, because his health had deteriorated rapidly, but due to her straight talk and honesty, we decided to give him a steroid shot - Panda Bear recovered rapidly and now is returning to his normal self. Though he might be dealing with problems the rest of his life, we'll definitely be coming back to a vet who shares genuine care and concern, without expecting an arm and a leg's pay out of your pocketbook (UPenn, I'm looking at YOU!). read more

Recently, (Dante) my tubby little tabby, was feeling a tidbit siiick. I wasn't sure if it was switching her from wet to dry, or my upcoming overnight trip to Hackensack (cats can sense these things), but I took her to Cat Vet to get her cat-oil changed and a little kitty check-up. The thing I like about this place is firstly its location. Cat Vet allows me to visit Phoebe's BBQ nextdoor, while Dante's getting his unmentionables cleaned and his little cat-face kissed. When I come back, a lot of times I have sauce in the corners of my mouth and Dante expresses interest there. I also like Cat Vet because of Cat Town, or at least that's what I call the window display. Any South Street pedestrian will testify that this loving establishment has taken discarded doll houses and made it a feline fun-fest. The best part is when the cats come out, often at night. You'll typically see some thin calico tabbies take on the town, and paint it red, as they wind their tangled tails. Sometimes though, I postulate as to whether the kitties have wild west duels, as the set looks a tad like Dodge. I also worry that of the two windows, that two potentialluy triste-ing beautiful babies would get separated in the two bay windows between the entrance. Who feeds these cats anyway? Needless to say, Dante has never been better. And I'm presently working on training him to get into his wicker basket when I say "Cat Vet." The biscuits helped. Cat Vet, in whole? Took my two cats here for their one year appointment last week and waited 45 minutes total to be seen. One of my cats happened to have a mild fever, and they immediately insisted she had worms - even though she had already previously been dewormed, wasn't underweight, literally has never set a paw outside my apartment door, and my other cat was the "picture of health". Needless to say it was obviously not what was wrong with her. Without asking or explaining why, the vet roughly jammed a large pill down my poor cats throat with her bare fingers, and only told me what the pill was for after I had to ask twice (who does this!?). She then tried to promote Science Diet to me over and over, regardless of the fact that it is one of the worst cat foods out there. The vet seems extremely aloof and didn't explain ANYTHING to me, and actually ignored a question my boyfriend asked her. She then proceeded to examine my other cat for all of two seconds and charged us 40 dollars for it. After all was said and done, my feverish cat ended up getting a pill, a shot (again which wasn't explained, I had to research it online later), a prescription of antibiotics, probiotic powder, AND a small bag of mild cat food.... when she is basically in perfect health, is full of energy, alert, and friendly. I honestly think all of these things were overly excessive and unneeded. Really disappointed by her poor manners and roughness with my cat, won't be going back. read more

Located off the beaten trolley path, this small office is great for folks who want quality care without spending the big bucks. You can take all of the money you saved at the vet and buy a cat condo. This will greatly please your kitty overlord. After you haul your kitty all the way from Market to South, you can sit down, catch your breath and pet the lovely office cats. Cat Vet of South St is affordable and quick, and the doctor is willing to suggest options that cost less and see if they are viable. Instead of bloodwork and sedation for full-on dental work, they decided to see if the kittyboy would behave without it and consent to get cleaned, and they were able to scale his teeth in mere minutes. Now my fangly little boy has perfect teeth! The visit, shot updates, eye drops and teeth cleaning cost a sweet-ass $90. Way cheaper than the VCA Cat Hospital and the same quality of care. I very, very enthusiastically recommend this vet! read more

Our new kitten came down with a wicked cold. I tried to let him rest at home and recover but after a couple of days it was clear that I needed to get him seen by the vet. I called and the receptionist was so sweet. I could really tell she cared. They were closing in an hour and she asked me to just come in as soon as I could get there They took great care of him and really showed genuine interest. They saw me right away and took fantastic care of the kitty. The assistant and the vet both showed a great deal of care. When there was a problem with my credit card ($69 for visit and meds...very reasonable) I gave them my debit card and they agreed to wait till tomorrow to charge it. (tomorrow's payday!) I feel as though this place has gone downhill recently. Their hours are forever changing and decreasing, and even when you can get an appointment you have to wait for at least 30 minutes while you listen to the staff in the back chat about their day. I assumed since they are cat specialists, they could better identify and treat cat problems, but after a recent visit, it became clear to me that was not the case. My cat was inaccurately diagnosed and not given proper treatment. There was also very little explanation of his problems and treatment options. When I tried to get a prescription online (Drs Foster & Smith), they actually called me to say that the Cat Vet does not do prescriptions over the phone. It is really inconvenient and expensive to have to go pick up medicine from the vet every week. I've grown tired of their old-fashioned ways. Their quaint approach also means that your cat's records will be a mess when sent over to a modern facility like Companion Pet Hospital. read more

Why all the negative reviews here? To be fair, I am a new customer of Dr. McKinstry's but so far, I have no complaints and, actually, I really love her. Some background: My cat, Soncat, was admitted to VSEC about a month ago with a complete urinary blockage. $1400 later, the recovery was so stressful and it was painful to watch. Within a week, Soncat had re-blocked. Knowing I couldn't afford another VSEC visit, my friend recommended Dr. McKinstry. Linda was able to get me in right away. MK unblocked him, switched his diet, and put him on several meds to try to eliminate the source of the problem. A week later, the cat had blocked again and this time I opted for the surgery to permanently widen him up and prevent this from happening ever again. He stayed at the vet overnight and has been recovering well. The bill for the procedure ended up being somewhat higher than the initial estimate so they let me pay it in installments which is basically unheard of for veterinary services outside of Care Credit. Soncat's recovery, while not as stressful as VSEC, was no breeze but Dr. McKinstry has been there for me every step of the way -- LITERALLY. Doc gives out her cell phone number in the case of an emergency and it is a huge relief. Dr. MK would always return my calls/texts to offer reassurance or invite me to come to her home office to check him out. This is an INVALUABLE feature of this doctor. To get answers immediately is a dream come true (I can be a pretty worried mommy) and to have another option outside of overpriced VSEC/Penn is just a huge relief. Yes, the hours are somewhat limited but they have never failed to get me in for important matters the day-of. Furthermore, and perhaps most importantly, I really trust Dr McKinstry. When she first switched Soncat's diet, I was skeptical because of the ingredients list which, as another reviewer stated, can appear to be complete junk. But MK was really frank: prescription diets have been PROVEN effective at improving conditions and ultimately prolong the life of our beloved furry friends. Yes, ideally my pets eat natural, grain-free diets, but I can't deny her logic. McKinstry is great with the animals, very experienced and knowledgeable, and she saved my cat's life -- more than once. I have personally used the Cat Vet of South Street for over 25 years. They were so helpful with my first cat and my wife and I have continued to use them for our cats. When our 14 year old cat Turtle got sick last year and it turned out to be cancer, they were so helpful seeing us last minute and helping us through to the last day when we had to put her to sleep. They were so patient and compassionate and made a very difficult time much easier. My wife and I are very grateful and now bring our two new kittens there as well. This past fall my four year old cat got really sick, stopped eating, lost several pounds and was vomitting. I was able to call and get an appointment about an hour later, and she had never been there before. They were helpful about explaining everything that was wrong, and the vet tech even talked on the phone to my mom (who was helping pay for the visit) to explain all of the options we had. It cost about $250 for everything. I've used them for lesser things since and started realizing they are pretty expensive....I switched vets. It is VERY easy to get an appointment right away, though because of that you deal more with the techs and not so much with Dr. McKinstry...its pretty rushed. We had a wonderful experience with our cat at City Cat Vets. She had an initial exam and senior lab work done in one visit and then when she was cleared had dental cleaning and extraction of two teeth. She did great, and the kindness and compassion toward her from everyone she met here was really wonderful.
