If you dont mind been spoken to in a demeaning manner this is the spot. The owner of the deli seems to always be in a rush and has a horrible arrogant attitude. It was 2 customers total there when i walked in at 11:40am. I totally understand inflation has everything pricey but i find it pricey ESPECIALLY WHEN i look at menu it says $6.95 and i end up paying over $10. Not my 1st time there so i know her attitude stinks (its the closest deli to my workplace) Don't think i'll be going back, I had enough of the attitude and the price changes...dont want to be unfair, the food is fairly good. read more

Food is decent but never made the same way, no matter how many times you order it. The owner definitely price gouges and takes advantage of customers. Unfortunately, it's one of the only places in the area where you can get food. All the employees always seem grumpy. read more

This is easily one of the best lunch spots in Trenton, the menu is huge and everything I've had has been delicious. If I'm not getting one of the Peruvian dishes I'll usually go for a panini. Everything is always fresh and I appreciate that they have healthy options. read more

This is my favorite lunch spot in town and if you aren't ordering the Peruvian meals you're seriously missing out. I started going there 10 years ago for just a good Trenton pork roll and cheese sandwich, but a couple years ago I tried the butifarra sandwich and I became hooked. This masterpiece is made with pulled pork, Peruvian salsa and plantains. And when the owner makes it, I always order the Cau Cau, a thick chicken, potato and onion stew served on top of white rice - a real treat. The Lomo Saltado is also very good with marinated steak, onions, tomatoes, aji chilies on top French fries. To really appreciate the food here you have to know what to order. Always ask what the specials are, or what they are cooking in the back. And be prepared to try new things. Even when I've had dishes I wasn't crazy about, I was always glad I tried something different. I often eat here more than once a week. read more

Here's the real deal Holyfield: The food here is good. The Cuban black beans with plantain is GREAT. Everything else I've had here is perfectly decent too, but basic. The staff can be somewhat...abrupt, sure. I don't take crap like that personally though. I'm a grown-up. If you're also grown-up who likes paninis, wraps, homemade soup , subs, and pizza, etc., then you've found your lunch spot. They have a nice little patio out back and I've used their restroom (without incident) several times. They also sell cigarettes and lottery tickets, if that's your bag. I read the few reviews while waiting for my Turkey and Swiss Hoagie to be served in the back room dining area. I admit to feeling some restaurant remorse imagining what I was about to get with a Snapple for my $9. (hair sandwich with attitude played in my head). Instead, I received a very decent fresh soft Hoagie roll stuffed with my selections, including copious hot and sweet peppers, and a nice smile and "enjoy your lunch," from my server. I enjoyed the sandwich, and put the trepidation to rest. Nothing wrong with the meal. I am not in downtown Trenton that often these days, but I would certainly consider adding City Deli Hoagie Shop to the list of alternatives along Willow Street. read more

Do not go! We attended a rally at the state house and a huge bunch of us went in there for coffee and breakfast sandwiches. Most of us used the bathroom and after a few minutes the owned locked the bathroom door and left. The lady behind the counter said he locked it because we all went and do not need to use it anymore! This applied to New customers coming in as well some business. By the way they locked it after they took our money. We spread the word to the 1300 people that attended the rally. How do you mess up home fries? Oh, I dunno. Maybe by boiling the potatoes, then seasoning them with some nasty a$$ chicken seasoning, bathe them in oil and toss them on a nasty, dirty grill. How do you mess up a breakfast sandwich? Same way - throw it on the same nasty grill that replaced taste of the eggs with that unmistakable blend of metal, grease, and grime that's probably never cleaned, then, undercook them, pour a gallon (that "little bit" you asked for) of ketchup on it and make me wait for almost 20 minutes to get it all. Mmm.. breakfast of champs. But that doesn't stop here - "Panini" is a hoagie roll burned black. Chicken is some sort of rubbery mutation reminding a mixture between octopus and bike tire, both in taste and texture (seriously, how do you mess up a chicken?).. Dolma (those cute grape leaf-wrapped treats) typically include little extra - hair. Yum! And just when you think you've had all the deliciousness this place has to offer, you have a lovely Cerberus working the front counter. Little attitude with your food is always a welcome treat, isn't it? This place is tired, uninspired, and sadly... still in business. read more

My co-workers and I frequented City Deli most every morning to buy coffee and breakfast sandwiches. Our agency also uses them quite often for our classes to provide continental breakfast as well as lunch at least 4-6 times a year. The owner charges a different amount each day for the same thing and covers her register display so that you can't see what she's charging you. They are not friendly at all and they are greedy. We felt like we were being taken advantage of and stopped going there. They are expensive and are hell bent on taking advantage you. I would recommend Lucy's Cafe at the corner of West State and Calhoun. We started going there and the gentleman who owns it is very nice and he's very reasonable. His sandwiches are far superior than City Deli and he serves breakfast with a smile. read more

This is a small, family owned deli. The food is always fresh and delicious, and the service is really good. There are lots of options, and anything they don't have, they are willing to accommodate you or make a special order. It does get super busy during lunch hours so it can be a little hectic but it's definitely worth it for the price. read more

The service is poor and is led by the owner. She consistently charges me different prices for the same order and when you call her out on it she just argues with you. I have been treated like I owe them a favor for spending my money in their establishment instead of like a valued customer. I am over it and will not support their business again. read more

Here's the thing about City Deli. Their food is decent, no problem there. But I stopped going when each time I went I started getting charged a different price for the EXACT SAME order. I'm talking from one week to the next I would pay more or less than (by more than a dollar) a different price for the same food. I gave it 3 times and haven't been back since. read more

Talk about hooking us down!! This place had no problem taking the money from a (bakers (that is 13 for you skinny bitches)) dozen fat guys than kicked us to the street. After our 2a group went and spent $60+ on sandwiches, coffee and drinks, they locked the bathroom door so we could not use it. The person behind the counter said " You all used the bathroom already." City Deli is a downtown Trenton institution--and if you work or live in Trenton, you know that if you blink your eyes, a restaurant that you went to last week could have closed already. The salads are excellent, particularly the one with feta cheese (veronica salad? definitely a female name), and for the price, a good deal. Just don't ever order ice coffee here.
