Store itself is good..But.I cannot believe the smell. For the past 3-5 years every time I come there there is a gas leaknsmell.. Maybe ok for customers... but is probably very harmful for workers. Today the smell was particularly bad, and I feel bit nauseated..not sure if this is why..but the owner must be a total jerk to be poisoning workers like that..or.may be not the owner. Maybe the city. Basic looking quick grab yet expensive grocery. It's the first thing when going into the French Market. City Fresh Market isn't anything special, but it's fast. For those not caring about money, they can also get some grocery items. The to order menu items they serve include coffee and avocado toast. Arriving awhile before the train, I got something from here. It doesn't have a whole lot. They have coffee but it's overpriced. Because I didn't have breakfast yet, I needed food. I got the Avocado Toast. It's about $5 for simple avocado spread on toast, this basically is all it was. Even so, they have some toppings you can add. I got it with pepper flakes and tomatoes. Basic but it was was okay. This was kind of plain and simple. Certainly it's a basic place for those on the go. It has a pretty limited selection. This is the first grocery store/restaurant that you'll see on the left when you enter the French Market. Though I've never shopped at their grocery store, I've ordered food from here twice. The first time was a tilapia sandwich, and today was a grilled veggie pesto sandwich. The tilapia sandwich was not bad. It was cooked well and served warm with just the right amount of flavor. The grilled veggie sandwich was subpar. It came with pretzel buns, but they didn't complement the veggies well. Both sandwiches came with a bag of Kettle chips. The service could use improvement. When I arrived for my MealPal order, both the cashier and another employee didn't know what I was talking about when I brought up the order. They weren't that warm or friendly either. Even though there's a food counter specific for carry-out food, you'll still be charged the $0.07/bag because they're classified as a grocery store as a whole. This is a convenient small grocery store at the entrance to the French market. For the space it utilizes, it has quite a vast variety of fruits, meats, desserts and vegetables. Prices are not cheap due to the convenience factor. I have tried their grilled salmon, grilled vegetables and a tiramisu. They were not the best, but for a fast desperate grab, they were alright. Definitely a must go! This super convenient market is full of all types of delectable foods and desserts. Such an amazing location for those who use the metra as their commute to and from the city. It's super tight and cramped however they make it work. There are a variety of options. So for my vegan and vegetarian friends... they've got you covered! There is even a happy hour menu that notifies the community of which establishments are offering what special/ deal for which day. Super awesome right! There's a small fresh grocery store inside if you need to do a little shopping. Not sure of the pricing of items but there is a nice size produce section. The seating area is nice and there is usually an artist playing music of their choice. It was certainly clean when i went as well. read more

Just off the train from Philadelphia. My Old favorite Fumari Meats is shuttered in the French Market so I'm having the Chorizo Egg & Cheese wrap at CitiFresh Market. This is a reasonably priced egg wrap at $5.99, with verde sauce in a small covered cup. Fresh, filling, but kinda bland for chorizo. Still good, just not a destination meal. More of an on the go meal if you are headed to work. Easily repackaged, the foil wrapped sandwich and sauce will travel if you eat only half, which I did. The 12 ounce, fresh squeezed OJ is a steal at $3.00, since it comes with your choice of a banana or a Poppies Coconut Macaroon. read more

I come here almost every day, literally. I work right next door and I know EXACTLY what's good and EXACTLY what's to skip. Good: Tomato Basil Quiche - oh...my....God! So good. Lenti Curry Quinoa Salad - Amazing. Walnut/Cheese/Apple Salads - Yum. Chorizo Breakfast Burrito - Love. The customer service. Bad: The prices! So expensive for certain items! The fresh produce here is a hit or miss. Overall, I really like this place for a quick grab 'n go type of establishment. To expect a culinary 5 star meal from here is unreasonable. Why not? If you have a train to catch or just got off the train and find yourself at the French Market, this is the first vendor you stumble upon. They take up almost the entire entry when you walk in, so you can't miss them. There are plenty of places to pick from once you've made it into the French Market, but if you just want to grab a drink or snack quickly, you most likely will get it here. read more

Horrible customer service!! RUDE! They charged me for the wrong sandwich and blamed me!!! I had no problem paying the extra balance but don't say It was my fault. The cashier just started to ring me up and didn't ask what i had (and it was NOT busy). When another persona came to bag my sandwich they started talking and said that it was rung up wrong because i didnt say anything!! I said i have no problem paying the extra money but it was not my fault. I was not asked what i had she just rant up the order! And he keep insinuating that it was my fault by saying "we always ask 100 % of the time". I said "Why would I lie?!!!!" again not about the money but about the service. And the sandwich and side salad i had - they ruined my appetite not even worth mentioning. Every dollar counts and when I treat myself next time it won't be there. read more

Do not eat their breakfast sandwiches/bagels. The young woman was wearing gloves while cleaning the inside of the cooler with a wet rag. I placed my order. She put my bagel in the toaster, without changing her gloves. I asked her to change her gloves and she did with hesitation. She seemed stunned by my request. The man at the cash register (wearing black, assumed it was a manager) apologized and said that she should have changed her gloves. He later recanted that statement because the rag was sanitized and the cooler was already clean. I could see that it wasn't. He went on to explain that the rag is sanitized with an industrial solution. Not sure why they think rubbing the inside of a dirty cooler with a rag and then touching your food is okay. I don't think they understand health codes here, even at the management level. Be careful. read more

It seems that whenever I can shovel my way out of my personal Gulag within a Gulag and tunnel my way across Russia, Poland, Germany and into France and then the French Market in yet another aimless quest for previously undecided upon grub that one of the dudes at City Fresh will invariably pull out his trusty cane, hook me over to their counter and talk me into buying a sandwich from them. I think the guys at City Fresh can see the fear in my eyes from the Asian food, the sushi and the other odious offerings lining the aisles at the market and are generously making a decision for me and setting me up with a true bleu, good old sandwich Americain. Or, I suppose it could be that these guys maybe work on commission? Just kidding. Anyway, City Fresh is basically a full service market within the French Market. It wraps around the corner, extending from the south entrance and then west down whatever rue they call that first south aisle. They sell things like meat, produce and yogurt. Mind you, I'm not paying $1.99 for a Fage when I can buy it on sale at Le Jewel for a buck or at La Mart du Wal for $1.28. Mais, non. I've only ever gotten hooked in for the sandwiches at City Fresh. And I'm here now to tell you that they're...bon. Non, they're not tres bon; they're just bon. But bon is certainly better than Asian food or sushi. Mais, oui. They'll cut le jamon and la fromage fresh for you right before votre yeux bleus, yes they will. The only thing I'd suggest is that you get your sandwich on the Italian bread. Italian bread at the French Market? What's the difference, it's all Latin, right? Damages? How about five francs and 48 cents altogether? How's that for a deal? Is it the best sandwich you'll ever eat? Why, no it's not. You can probably find a slightly better sandwich within one mile to the south and also to the west, but it's also certainly better than U-boat-way and the freaky James John's. And they'll even toast your sandwich for you if you like. Four stars. read more

First things first. This place lives up to its name. Their produce and fruits are always fresh. The apples, pears, and peaches are always perfect in color from their freshness. I've never really seen their produce as being less than fresh like I sometimes see at Jewel. The meat selection is pretty good as well which includes some pre-marinated meat which makes it convenient for a quick dinner on a weekday. For just an outpost at the French Market, their seafood selection is pretty impressive which include sushi grade tuna, little neck clams, live lobster, etc. The employees are always very friendly and are quick to ask what they can get you. It's a great place for me to stop by on the way home from work when I just need to pick up a couple or more items. read more

This place is great. Sometimes when I'm on the way home, I'll buy some fish or some veggies for a salad. The prices aren't outrageous and they have enough of a selection, that you can definitely find what you need to whip up a tasty dinner. In the mornings, I usually stop by to buy a bottle of kefir or some fage and an apple. It's very convenient. Their orzo pasta salad with red onions and feta is also a favorite of mine. I bought meat from a train station last week. No, not a hot dog and, no, not the sausage bits on a take away Pizza Hut. I'm talking New York strip and Ribeye! And, no, not from the cooler in the trunk of the taxi dude next to the train station who sells the "lord-knows-where-that-came-from" meat that he probably butchered in his back yard or something. (if you do need that kind of meat, I've got his number and I'll hook you up. Plus side, he delivers) No, this is legit quality stuff. If you haven't been to the French Market under Ogilvie's train platforms, you should really stop in. City Fresh Market is inside along with a ton of other vendors. City Fresh isn't a full grocery store, but they have a good amount of fresh produce and a killer meat and seafood counter. I've seen it a few times, but finally make the point of stopping in on a detour from the loop to river north after work one day. I have to say I was a little disappointed at the cut's thickness on this particular day. I prefer a thicker steak, and I've seen such thickness here before, but the overall quality was great. After putting these baby's on the grill I'd definitely make the stop here again. Don't miss the salt selection on the counter top! The guy helped me out with a recommendation for the steaks. They have some others for other meats and seafood as well. The one I got was 'black' and had a strong smoky flavor, almost like it was charcoaled. It made for a super fantastic pop to the medium rare steaks. Great produce and baked goods too. read more

The French Market is pretty much a one stop shop if you are looking for everything you need for a great summer lunch. Everything I do not pick up at other vendors I find here...things like bread and a large selection of rice and pasta salads. I've been shopping at City Fresh since it opened. I live two blocks from the French Market and it's been very convenient for me to regularly pick up a few items for dinner and other essentials. Normally I would give them a decent review, but I just had such a bad experience there that 1) I'm giving them the lowest rating, and 2) I will never shop there again. Yesterday I bought a loaf of bread at City Fresh. When I got home I took it out of the bag only to discover that there was a big chunk chewed out of the bread. Some little rodent chewed through the plastic and made a nice little mouse-size hole in the bread. How I didn't notice this before I bought it I'll never know, but I didn't. I returned it today with the receipt and was first met by an indifferent cashier who said "let me get the manager." The manager came over, didn't even look at me, gave me a refund and walked away. No acknowledgement, no APOLOGY. This infuriates me. I return a disgusting, contaminated loaf of bread and you can't offer even a small apology? They've never had stellar customer service (except the meat and seafood counter) but it's never mattered much to me. But his time warranted a wee bit of customer service. Big bummer. read more

We got the beef kabobs that looked amazing behind the glass. However, once we got them home and grilled them, it became clear that the meat quality was seriously poor. We could barely chew through it, and after trying a few bites, everyone deemed the meat inedible and stopped eating. We had to quickly throw something else together for our guests. Later, when we were cleaning-up, we threw all the chunks of steak into the garbage disposal and even it had a really hard time cutting through the fatty, tough meat. How they can sell this low-grade meat on steak kabobs is beyond acceptable. read more

December 23 of every year, I want to air my grievances. But when my co-workers and I wander by this place we feel the need to daily. Why? 1) The prices. They are a bit off the chain for what you are getting. Example: They're upwards of $12, or a few bucks more for an Italian sub that is half the quality of its much cheaper category rival from JP Graziano? Insane. 2) Quality. I just feel that the quality of what I have gotten does not measure up to the competition in French Market. Look no further than my love for Fumare and/or Aloha for top eats in that stop. If the name is City Day-old I would find it more appropriate. 3) The meager bell on the counter should turn into a fog horn. City Fresh Market at French Market does not have an overwhelming selection of fruits and vegetables and groceries in general, nor is it meant to be. But the seafood seems very fresh, and they have a decent enough selection. I stopped by the other day after work (I work next door) for some wild salmon. They had two wild options, I went with the more expensive one. At $14 per pound it was not cheap but not outrageous. The person who helped me even put it on ice for me. The result was some of the most flavorful, and most tender salmon I've ever had. I also picked up a few fruits and veggies for the meal, and they were all good. I'll be back! read more

I'm on my way to the Metra, I finally left the office but I have 20 or 30 minutes to kill before the next train departs. What to do....City Fresh Market! In the french market below Ogilvy Station in the loop, this market is the perfect way to pass the time! They have a small selection but it is perfect for picking up a few things for dinner or a small treat before heading home. I really enjoy the sweet pita treats they have. Especially the sour cherry. The produce and pre made salad selection is great if you need a few items to complete a meal or a little something to beef up dinner. The prices vary, but overall they are on par with most markets in the area. If you ever find yourself near the train station with time to spare...stop by the fresh city market! read more

The City Fresh fresh made sandwiches are about as good as it gets! The made to order sandwiches are not only as fresh as can be, but they are also an extreme value, and a healthy choice for your lunch. Subway has nothing on these guys. Plus where else do you get the option of picking up a days worth of the fruit of your choice to eat with your sandwich. My only recommendation would be these guys a get a bigger sign. The last time I shopped here the cashier was, as always, dour and rude. I opened a container of bread loaves and reached for the tongs, but she grabbed them from me and pulled out a loaf I did NOT want. When I pointed out the one I wanted, she said she had to give me the other because I'd already touched it - this was COMPLETELY UNTRUE and I told her "No, I didn't," to which she simply replied "Yes you did." I then stated in that case I wanted no bread at all, and she insisted I buy it. I appreciate that the business is diligent about sanitation, but: (1) There are no containers to stop anyone from touching any of the many kinds of produce they sell without buying it, and (2) If they cared about good customer service, she would have accepted the $1.00 loss of the bread they IMAGINED I'd touched, politely explained to me that they retrieve bread for their customers, and given me the one I wanted. In short, the service here is disgraceful and they treat the customers like lepers. Will never shop here again. read more

This outpost of the northside institution anchors the French Market. The fruits and vegetables are generally fresh, high quality and generally less than half of what Jewel and Dominick's charge. The seafood is especially impressive--it may seem strange to get fish from a train station, but they have excellent, fresh, quality fish (and meats) at very reasonable prices. I live right next to the West Loop Dominick's, but in the summertime I walk the extra three blocks to shop at the French Market and especially the CFM. read more
