My first experience was from a co-worker as a holiday treat many years ago. I indulge myself once in a while at City Fresh or a local Balkan restaurant. The store offers groceries and baked goods from Central & Eastern Europe, and the Mediterranean. My neighbor swears by the variety of bread there. Their prices are slightly higher due to their specialty items, which is expected. They have a small parking lot adjacent to the store and another across the street, which is a plus since it can be challenging to find street parking in the area. Although the aisles are narrower than regular grocery stores, the service is always friendly and phenomenal. I was running late and forgot I had to pick up a couple of items. This place is a smallish grocery store that punches above its small size. They have great looking produce, meat and deli counter. The prices for meat and veggies better than some other local grocery store. Went to City Fresh and for the first, but definitely not the last, time came across items label 'Deli Ends." In the packaged deli section, there were a dozen vacuum-packages of assorted smoked meats and cheese odd and ends, each a different combination than the others. Essentially, I thought, this is the Holy Grail of grocery shopping: the EXPECTED surprise! I bought one package, took it home, slept, dreamt about enjoying the product, woke up, did some light exercises, then opened my purchase. I had one piece of cheese and tried three different meats. Review is for the bakery, since I live far and never shop in this store. Nothing but the best words for the bakery! Actually, for the woman Maja who is making the cakes. I ordered them few times and they are terrific! Not just taste, but the flavor also! All my friends order here, and we tried all flavors and... you can't say which is better than the other:-D! The place is small but you can find pretty much everything there. If you are Eastern European then you are going to appreciate it even more. It has a lot of foreign/imported items. The cheese section is incredible and there isn't a great variety of wines but many are imported as well so its nice to have a piece of home. My favorite thing about this place is their bakery. I refuse to go anywhere else for a cake. They make the most incredible cakes you will ever have. They are creative, delicious, large and so fresh. Their options are these elaborate godiva, hazelnut, belgian chocolate kinda stuff. How do you go wrong with that? And staff are always there to help you with suggestions. Must visit!!! read more

2.5 stars I have visited on a couple of occasions. It's good if you are missing an ingredient or two and are nearby. Also, it's good if you are looking for Balkan products. Otherwise, I would not go out of my way to shop here. I dislike that the aisles are so tight, and it's really crammed in the store due to so many products stocked to take advantage of the floor space. Aisles are narrow, as is the store entrance. Also, in my opinion, the store could use a revamp of the space along with decluttering and stocking fewer items. It would help open the space up. Also, I noticed many reviewers describing bad customer service experiences. Any employees from the Balkans will not be randomly smiling and may come across as unapproachable. Be mindful that not every culture is taught to smile for no reason. Just let the employee know in a professional/business like manner what you need. I am sure they will help you. Customers Come Last At this Location City Fresh Market Starrett City/Spring Creek 1380 Pennsylvania, BK, NY 11239 While counting out my cash to purchase an item, Cashier Elizabeth, snatched the money out of my hands before I completed my counting. I took my money back out of her hands and continued to count the amount placed it on the belt; saying, 'take it easy, dont snatch my money from my hands.' Elizabeth completed the transaction, as I picked up the item Elizabeth smacks the item out of my hand. Don't know if she was mute or couldn't speak my language but her action of then throwing my change and receipt said alot about her. Meanwhile a Managing Agent is standing directly at that register and witness this act by the cashier Elizabeth. His response was; "what did I (a customer) do to Elizabeth." This type of customer treatment should never be acceptable from a Managing Agent especially not an alledged Customer Service Agent. Swung by to pick up some groceries on the way home from grabbing take out. Store isn't big but it's got what you need. Plenty of fresh veggies, decent selection of meat, and some incredibly beautiful desserts that you can take a chance on at $4-$5 per slice. I picked up a slice of the Nutella cake. Hubby and I enjoyed it immensely. Store is clean. Staff is friendly. It's small but they have taped the floors and have hand sani and wipes. Prices seem reasonable. As of 4/23 they also have hand sani and sanitizing spray to purchase if you are looking for it. read more

I just left this store. Near the end of my shopping, right before I headed to the register, I contemplated on leaving my shopping basket on the floor and walking out. I noticed two shoppers and numerous employees either walking around without a mask or with their masks completely down. Here's a secret; City Fresh Market makes the absolute best cakes. They're as close to perfection as it gets. You have to try it for yourself to see what I'm talking about. Super flavorful, creamy, sugary deliciousness! Although they did stop making the best cake they had, a chocolate strawberry based one, the cakes they still offer are amazing. One thing I dislike about City Fresh is that it's prices are much higher than other places that carry European brands. Devon Market and Tony's is much more reasonably priced for the same products. When I come shopping here, it's usually just for the cake. They have a very small parking lot so on busy days, you may have to find street parking nearby. City Fresh is great if you have a huge sweet tooth like I do. But, if you're interested in Balkan and other European branded food, I'd recommend checking out Devon Market. read more

I love the fact they have a pretty good selection and it's a smaller store so you can get in and out pretty quickly. Great prices for produce. Parking however is atrocious which really isn't the stores fault as they only have so much room and it's by a bad intersection for traffic. Be prepared if you actually get a spot or be stuck in your parking spot while another driver is trying to find a spot and block you in. read more

While my son was taking his Physics SAT I decided to do some grocery shopping. Not near a Jewel, I went into a City Fresh Market for the first time and was DELIGHTED. Although they didn't have many of my usual brands they had a huge selection of European brands from a wide assortment of countries and surprisingly many of the prices of produce and meats were lower than what I would find at Jewel. They had an astonishing variety of products for a compact space. A bakery on premises. An actual honeycomb segment for sale (see photo). I don't know if all the City Fresh locations are this impressive but this one beats Treasure Island for variety, and price. Very impressive! (Free parking) read more

Who's in charge of this store? Why haven't they addressed all of the ill-mannered employees? My gosh, the bakery employees are the worst to deal with. I thought their stuck-up attitude with lack of customer service took the cake, however, whoever was on the phone with me earlier today should really be taught some civility. Very poor communication skills. I avoid this market at all costs, but my sister wanted a cake for her birthday and reminisced on their tiramisu... so I thought of calling the store to see if they had any before I made the drive. You can get a few slices of cake here for $3-4. The yellow custard cake for example is divine. The rest are $5 but they're massive slices. I don't see why folks are complaining. Jeez. They are a business and can charge more if they want. The fried donuts(ustici) are amazinggggggg and are 0.59/ea. Top with some powdered sugar or jam. Sooooo amazing and I don't know who else sells them in Chicago. They are a MUST TRY. They are little golden Fried nuggets of gold ! The chocolate mini croissants are delicious. Plain variety and ham and cheese available too. Just the perfect snack. And they have paczi type donuts available too....plain, dusted with sugar, or topped with chocolate. They are $0.79/ea. Large selection of Polish /European cookies available. Nice selection of European chocolates too including Italian and Milka brand. Nice aisle of Balkan/European cookies and other dry goods. This is one of the cheapest markets around. Its a higher quality than Aldi or Food for Less. The value is awesome, but.. you can guess that all the food is franken food. Genetically modified goodness. I'm just guessing this. No chance they would charge $.49/pound for Organic green & red peppers the size of a small puppy's head. You can get 12-15 chicken legs for under $4 bucks. No, its not rotten meat. Its franken.. They've got lots of the awesome Polish chocolates, assorted wines and alcohol's. Try this Yugoslavian Plum brandy, name is something like, Slivovitz, but its alc content is way up there. This is the best place to get stuff for a dinner party or bbq. I call it "my market." In and out in 15 minutes if you're not waiting on a butcher. Typical trip thru my market: Grab some oranges, grapes, bananas, apples...fresh cilantro, flat parsley, basil, cubanell peppers at 55c a pound regular price, 5 kinds of tomatoes to choose from. Dried fruit from ripened stock at 1.79/lb, greek pasta, an entire selection devoted to redpeppers - pickles, creamed, roasted, oiled, watered, whatever you want - its there! Worldly selection of teas, small selection of grind-your-own-coffee. About 50 different brands and flavors of honey - small toiletry selection(but we know we all go to target for that stuff) Around the other side of that isle you find eggs, a million types of cream, yogurts, K & M dairys, cheeses up the wazoo! And then you reach the packaged sausage: Bobak's and other major Chicago brands - from sidepork to chorizo. The Chicken selection is constantly emptied by customers and refilled by the staff. Perfectly butchered redmeats and pork and I just picked up a pack of lamb&beef cevapi that was absolutely outstanding! Their sirloin is cut in about 6 different styles and all sold at very low prices. Turn around after selecting your meats and the butcher's will provide you with sausages and roasts and chops and more. Very beautiful and helpful staff. Beautifully butchered meats. Awesome fresh veggie and fruit section. All the 'worldly' goods this super-chef looks for: Misko Pasta, Asparagus@99c a pound regularly, Import beer section, section for oils and peppers. I'm moving a few miles away - but even if I moved to the other side of the city - I'll always shop here. In and out in 15 minutes? For under $20 a carload? I think I'll stay! read more

I haven't been here in a while and decided to go today because I was in the area. VERY HIGH PRICES. Sooooooo disappointed. All the bread was "on sale" for having an expiration date of today or tomorrow. Most of the products were old and stale. Including wrapped dessert made 10 days ago......ew. This market has the best tasting cakes. You would never think that their is a pastry shop inside. City fresh market has a cake called chocolate raspberry which is a chocolate cake with layers of strawberry, and chocolate. You know how Jewel and Dominick's basically sells overpriced deli meat and cheese? Well, there's this place by my parent's that supposedly sells cheap deli meat and cheese. My friend and I ventured there last night and scored the following deals: 1/2 lb of turkey breast: $3.50 1/2 lb of muenster cheese: $1.26 1/2 lb of provolone cheese: $1.50 No, really. Seriously. I was super excited! They also have ready made roasted chicken ($6) and meat pies ($4), eight skinless drumsticks ($5) and a TON of awesome freshly baked goods. Grapefruit was on special this week - 10 for $10 as well as red apples (69 cents/lb)! There's a ton of random ethnic food, too, like sardines, falafel mix, Asian noodles, ramen, pitas, philo dough, tortillas and Turkish coffee. Oh, and I forgot to mention the HUGE wine and cheese section. Other staples (eggs, milk, yogurt) might be a little pricey here, so save those items for another store. Parking in the lot is a little insane, but you can also use the lot of the restaurant right across the street. read more

Here's the sitch: so yesterday I was in a bind... I needed to buy cevapcici for my friend's BBQ and being Sunday, my go-to meat dealer (Lincoln Quality Meats) was closed. I know-- procrastination makes for a terrible game plan. But thanks to a keyword search on Yelp I found City Fresh Market. And off I was on a little field trip to Devon and Kedzie! As I was walking up, I was surprised to see the store is a.) a good size and b.) has a somewhat modern facade. And, they've got a small parking lot and a larger one directly across the street. The insides... oooh the insides. How do I love thee, let me count the ways! 1.) Fantastic + FRESH produce selection... and everything is cheap! 2.) An extensive selection of imported world food items-- cheese, Euro wines and liqueurs, spreads (found my Ajvar!), chocolates, etc. 3.) An awesome bakery with made-daily pastries and ethnic breads including lepinja (Bosnian bread). 4.) It's organized well and so very clean. 5.) Super meat/deli counter. If you want it, they got it. Though, beef feet? Really? 6.) Cevapi (uncased sausage) in various blends-- beef/lamb/pork, beef/pork or just pork. And fresh, never frozen. 7.) Did I mention that everything is much cheaper than Jewel or Dominick's? Like, crazy cheap. 8.) Everyone is nice. Everyone smiles. 9.) They play Bosnian music. Yep, that was me dancing in the aisles. This European market has great kalamata olives, feta cheese and super fresh rainbow trout. I also like their organic garlic, and their fruits and vegetables. Their overall selection is great and prices are reasonable. The staff here is wonderful, except for one uncomfortable situation with their general manager. I use calling cards on occasion to make overseas calls. I only had my debit/credit card (and no cash) one day while in the store, and I wanted to see their selection of calling cards available, for future reference. I asked a store clerk about their selection of calling cards. He could not help, so he asked for the general manager, who approached me with a calling card in hand and told me the card was $5. I politely tried to explain that I only wanted to know what cards they had in stock. She instructed me to go to their store's ATM to obtain cash to purchase the calling card. When I told her I would not take cash from the store's ATM to purchase the calling card she rolled her eyes, turned around and walked away. I was left standing speechless. This is a European market and sometimes I understand that certain things can be lost in translation. However, I am also European and there was nothing lost in translation on this one - that manager was R-U-D-E. The rest of the staff there has always been very helpful and nice. I live in edgewater so the city fresh market is about a 10 minute drive, and I pass up 5 supermarkets on the way, but it's worth the mileage. You can go straight down Devon to get there and pass through Little India, but this seems to take forever...! Pink lady apples, lettuce, pears, avocados, pineapple... These are a few of my favorite things. Also, I'm a big fan of their already made salads. There is a chicken salad with jalapeno and cilantro and one with pasta, tomato, balsamic, and mozzarella... their pre-made salads are reasonably priced, unlike big-chain markets. Their meat is also really reasonable. I usually pick up chicken breasts and some steak. Last, but not least, their baklava is delish. There is never a wait at the check-out. This store I had a lot of good Balkan products, I did find some of them to be priced higher than at other locations but none the less they carry great products some I didn't even know existed. The store is a little on the small side and it can get hectic if there is a lot of people. Their bakery has a lot of delicious cookies and cakes it's so hard to choose from. I wasn't a fan of their parking lot since it only has 10 or so spots and getting in and out is a pain. Their burek is amazing as well! worth the drive to grab delicious food for the week! read more

I love this place! It's has the freshest and cheapest produce around. I'm not so sure about the frankenfruit that Jacob speaks of. But they do manage to have the most colorful fruit, even in Feb. I get food here for the night. Not really a stock up store. Almost no one speaks English. Seems like when I'm here, I'm the only American. The music over the PA system is usually some ethnic stuff. They are generally very nice. Try the whole roasted chicken, buy it right out of the roaster for 4.99. Same thing costs 6.99 at Dominik's, and is tasteless and dry. If you go here park across the street to the east. The lot nearest to the store is useless and packed. For some reason, there's always hot looking ladies in this place. Oh Sonia, what took you so long girl??? I live in the lovely hood of RoPa (Roger's Park) and I have seen this market many times when driving down Devon to go to Home Depot in Lincolnwood. Today I ventured in to buy produce. I absolutely HATE going to Dominick's or Jewel for their overpriced rotten produce. And my other produce place, Rogers Park Fruit Market has had a very foul smell there the last several times I went. Total turnoff. I *almost* left City Fresh because the parking lot was a 3 ring circus. But I circled the block and finally found my way in. When I walked in my first thought was "Oh it's so clean" which is a must when dealing with food. Second I was blown away at how fresh everything was. I have always hated winter in Chicago for the simple fact that produce was so awful. Well not here. I bought apples, zucchini you name it, all fresh! Bags of spinach for 2/$3. We go through spinach in our house like mad. Not only was their produce fresh and abundant they had a wonderful selection of international foods and wines. Their cheese selection was an art form. When I got to the meat section I was also surprised. Everything was beautiful. But low and behold I got to the bakery section. Had I not sworn off baked goods on Jan 1, I would have bought the entire case. But I did buy my hubby a nice piece of cake as a little treat. But now for the best part. I bought 9 grocery bags of fresh veggies with a super large package of chicken and lean porkchops and a small slice of cake for my hubby...for $54! I have enough to cook dinner for a week! Amazing! This would have easily cost me $100 at Dominick' or Jewel. I did have to hit Dominick's for "light" products since they didn't have a selection of low fat things I needed on my list. And sadly I spent 3x that at Domincks for staples. I am totally putting this place on my weekly shopping list. Now I can eat all my fruit n veggies for half the price. read more

Recently ran across this market this past wkend. Friend told me it's a Serbian grocery store, and I sensed that I was in another country as the foreign music blasted over the intercom. :) I'm a big fan of imported desserts and sweets, & i was quite surprised to see how cheap the produce were. Fresh and a great selection. I picked up some okra, beets, and a variety of green and red peppers. I love me some Bueno hazelnut chocolate, Milka chocolate bars, and of course..a jar of good 'ol Nutella :D I'm a bit infatuated with hazelnuts for the moment. The pastry area is really something. So inviting and tantalizing, They have three different kinds of tiramisu (wow!), small bites of cookie cakes filled with whipped cream, chocolate mousse, and chocolate flakes on top. The price isn't cheap, but fairly reasonable. Service is ok... I def stick out like a sore thumb being the only asian in the market. But they're cordial and helpful. Yes.. the parking lot needs some improvement. Cars are jammed in the small lot like a brick of tetris. Bit of an inconvenience, but they carry tons of unusual products that poke my curiosity. read more

This place is not far from my house, but I don't get here as often as I should. Stopped today to get some salad dressing and bread. The produce and items are very nice, fresh and reasonable. I should shop here more often than I do, but many times when I pass it, the parking lot looks like a bumper car venue and I keep going. This is my corner grocery store. Truly I am blessed. I go here for my meat, dairy, lunchmeat, produce and awesome European delicacies (like those liquor-filled chocolates, or Greek Mountain Tea). There is a surprising amount of merchandise in this store and the staff are always helpful. Prices are extremely reasonable and quality is outstanding. I've never had anything that was "off" from this place. I find the selection at the produce section the meat counter to be pretty outstanding. In addition to the usual chicken, pork and beef, they have lamb and veal as well They also have organ meat, which makes my fiancee very happy too. I am no specialist on cevapcici, but while I was at home and packaging some for the freezer, they smelled so delicious, even raw, that I actually started drooling. I knew these would be awesome cooked. (They totally were!) By the way, I highly recommend the burek, if you want a snack before shopping. They've got some amazing european-style deserts that are tasty and FAR too tempting. They've got a nice liquor section, especially if you are into plum brandy and vodka. Tip to newbies: Park in the lot across the street at Chicago Foods. It is totally permitted, and only the truly seasoned should try to get into that tiny lot at CFM itself. This place should have 100 stars! People that give them less have not tried the fresh pastries and home made cakes!! The kinder plasma cake is to absolutely die for! The slices are pricey ($4.50-$5) but they are huge! Also love the variety in Macedonian products they have as well as the fresh fruits and veggies. It's a tight parking lot and tight isles but the products are good which is what actually matters! Sometimes the parking lot is crazy, so I park down the street and walk. However, this is still a great little store. Like the Walgreens of grocery stores. I can park, get in and out in 10 minutes. This place is a death trap. City Fresh has been my preferred grocery store for years, but as of yesterday I won't go back. The staff has become increasingly lax, almost aggressive, about wearing face masks with nearly every stocker and cashier I saw wearing it as a chin strap. A man carrying cooked food came out of the back room wearing no mask at all, giving me the impression that the cooks who are out of sight do not wear any PPE while preparing food. They don't wipe down the carts and there were no wipes or hand sanitizer available at the entrance. The aisles are very narrow and unmasked staff do not get out of your way and give you any distance. The last straw was when a customer came in without a mask and no one batted an eye. I left without buying anything. Death trap. Stay away. The city should shut them down. read more
