    Crossin' the water

Leave the land behind while you journey to fantastical destinations like the Westin or Marriott. Dodge those barges on your 3-leg party ride back and forth across the Savannah River. With plenty of chances every 20-30 minutes to catch a float throughout the day, you won't be stranded while you gaze longingly across the water at how the other half lives. Go and join them! Head to the Savannah Riverfront for food and festivities, perhaps even a ghost tour (or a ghost-restaurant). From that side head across to attend a boring Trade Center convention and explore the Westin, or stay at the Marriott and skip the walking (and swimming) to everywhere else. From Waving Girl Landing to City Hall to Trade Center, just remember: don't head down that walkway until the arriving passengers disembark. If grabbing a late-night drink, under normal times you have until nearly midnight before you'll turn into a pumpkin and miss the last ride. "Abnormal times" make that before 10 pm. I'll ride every time I'm in town, but of course will wait for you to deboard on my next trip.

Five Stars for this little ferry. It offers a wonderful little ride on the waters of the Savannah aboard great little boat and it's FREE! Do you hear me! free! Free! FREE! Compliments of the City of Savannah. The complete round trip ride only takes around a half hour, but it's a wonderful ride. There are several ferry boats, all the same, built by Patti Shipyard. Mine trip was aboard the "Juliette Gordon Low," named after the person who founded the Girl Guides which today is known as the Girl Scouts. Like the other ferry boats, for me it was a breath taking marvelous little ferry. When you board it you would swear you are walking back in time aboard a Trumpy yacht of the roaring 20's with a gorgeous wood like decorative interior design, a sort of fantail aft, top notch air conditioning, overhead ceiling fans and offering a classic vertical axis yawing ride though the currents and over the waves. I highly recommend you to try it.

As a visitor, we thoroughly enjoyed our brief time on the ferry. What can I say?? You board the ferry. You sit or stand outside or in. You cross a body of water. You arrive safely on the other side. Love it!!

Utilized this ferry service while in Savannah, crossing the Savannah River from the City Hall area, back to the Westin. Surprisingly, this was a free passenger ferry service. The ride is short, but scenic, and a nice way to see the city area along the river. You can sit inside, or outside, but I recommend outside so you can get a really great view! It was one of the most convenient parts of being in Savannah!

Totally unreliable. Waited forever. If you need to get somewhere at a specific time drive across the bridge.

Take a free ride across river and back just to see sights from the water. Fast and easy, good for kids too!

Had a good time on the Savannah Riverboat Cruise…read more Honestly, the best part was being able to get out on the water, walk around the boat, and see Savannah from a different perspective. There was some history mixed in along the way, which was interesting, and the whole experience was relaxing. The food was probably the weakest part for me. It was served buffet style with fried chicken, mac and cheese, mashed potatoes and gravy, plus fruit. It wasn't bad, but it was all pretty lukewarm and just didn't leave much of an impression. That said, I don't think people are booking this for the food anyway. You're booking it for the views, the boat, and the experience. We had fun, enjoyed the ride, and I'm glad we did it.

Where are you traveling from?" Nothing. No welcome or warm greeting. The next person wanted us to take a picture. For money, no doubt. No way. We're already not wanted, why would you want a picture? I've already decided I'm not spending any more money after being greeted in that fashion. No drinks, no snacks, and no souvenirs. The narrator was knowledgeable, had a few jokes, and was tipped appropriately. The paddlers do not run. Two stars for a knowledgeable narrator and clean restrooms. Otherwise, this riverboat cruise is a big pass.

However, I've never taken a trolley tour until this past September when we visited for a few days. We had several hours to kill on a Thursday and my history loving husband suggested we take a trolley tour and I thought why not? It would be a great way to see and learn more about the oldest city in Georgia! We chose the hop on-hop off tour, which is 90 minutes long. The tour begins each day at 9:00am and the last tour leaves at either 4:30pm or 5:00pm depending on the season. This tour goes through 14 stops and a trolley comes by every 15 minutes or so. We hopped off pretty early on to explore one of the squares by foot and ended up walking around, getting coffee, and shopping for over an hour. We hopped back on and stayed for several more stops, but had to hop off once we got closer to our hotel. We appreciate that you have the freedom to "customize" your tour experience. The tour was very informative and enjoyable! We loved the addition of historical characters who hopped on at different stops. The actors did a phenomenal job. Highly recommend!

We did the 75 minute historic tour of Old Savannah. Check in was a breeze and all employees we encountered were lovely. Our tour guide/driver, Irish, is a Savannah native and shared some of her personal anecdotes and gave us an in depth history of the squares and history. I learned a lot more about Savannah during this tour and would highly recommend!

Beautiful, untouched, and pristine are just a few of a bounty of words that could be used to…read moredescribe this wonderful place. Amazing and awesome are a couple others. Not a lot of people make it to Ossabaw Island. For one there is no regular ferry service nor is there a road that runs to the island. This is on purpose. Sandy Torrey West, whose family has owned the island since the 1920's, sold the island to the state in 70's as a Heritage Preserve with the understanding that Ossabaw would "be used for natural, scientific and cultural study, research and education, and environmentally sound preservation, conservation and management of the Island's ecosystem". That means that unless you go there for one of the few deer / hog hunts the state puts on or you go there for an event you probably aren't getting there. If you have a boat you can park it off the beach and come up on the beach, but it's illegal to go past the high tide line of the island. I believe the island sees less than 2000 people a year on it. It shows too. I got to check the island out for myself after going on a service trip with the Georgia Conservancy. We arrived on Friday by a special ferry, worked on cleaning up the large spanish style Torrey West mansion and the clubhouse/grounds Saturday, and left Sunday. During this time we took full advantage of the clubhouse that was built in the 1880's and recently revamped. We also hung out with the feral donkeys that are on the island, as well as took an hour long ride through the forest and marsh to check out the beach. We saw armadillos, wild hogs, alligators, and lots of shore birds. It's amazing how wild and unspoiled the island is. No trash, no noise, no people. Just wilderness. The ride through the interior of the island made me think of Jurassic Park. Just huge old live oaks with spanish moss hanging down and lots of palmettos scattered about. Interesting tidbit is the road that we went down is possibly oldest continously-used dirt road in the country. Mrs. Torrey West has moved off the island at age 103 and the Ossabaw Island Foundation will soon be in the process of slowly renovating her house as they already have for the clubhouse and bunkhouse. There are also some slave cabins that are slowly being restored as well. Long before Mrs. Torrey West and family lived here there were 4 plantations on the island. If interested in seeing and staying on the island yourself look on the Ossabaw Island Foundation website, they manage the cultural and education aspects of the island, and check out the calendar. There are often writing or artist workshops which is what Sandy Torrey West wanted for her island. The Island is ridiculously beautiful and I am so thankful to Sandy Torrey West and other wealthy land owners like her on the Georgia coast who thought that the best thing for their islands would be conservation for future generations. I have been to Cumberland which I always thought was untouched, but Ossabaw beats Cumberland out by a mile. The unspoiled nature of the island is something that can only being experienced by being there. *Google Eleanor Torrey West for more info on how this island came to be. The story behind her life and love of the island is quite interesting.
