This was an accidental find through Yelp on a road trip and ... wow! The sausage here is truly blissful -- probably the best I've ever eaten. It's a course grind with just the right amount of black pepper, and it's juicy like no sausage (in this style) that I've experienced. The brisket is in my top ten with a decent/not overbearing smoke flavor. It was also extremely moist, but that could be because I always ask for the deckle. The pork ribs here are good in flavor, but they could've been more moist. Either way, the service here is very friendly and efficient. The joint is crowded -- as it should be. A wonderful experience. I wish this place was closer to my home.

Warning...you cannot get kale salad here

Go! My standard refrain for this place. If you love Texas style Q,want to give it an ( authentic unadulterated try),go back in time, people watch or all of the above. An exception exist here that applies no where else. I worship the sausage. It's worth the trip alone. My favorite thing to do is pull into town, grab a stack of meat and big Red,drop my pick up tailgate and visit Nirvana. Everyone is chasing the Texas Monthly lastest top 50 list. Standing in lines ,1,2 hours and more. Spending outrageous sums on sides ( unessential) and dishing out $50,60,70 each. At City Market you'll be stuffed with plenty of leftovers for $30. Go!

We came in for lunch on our way to Shertz. We sampled all the meat with the brisket the winner. The ribs and sausage were just ok imho. The ambiance was good ole little town Texas. The service was top notch as well. They offer pies and banana pudding for desert at a low price.

City Market was so great. There are two lines, one that goes into a smoke room to order meat. The other, which is before the smoke room, is for drinks and sides. The service was great. The restaurant and bathrooms were very clean. The tables were also wiped off. The meats were fabulous! The ribs and sweet pickles were a dynamic duo. The mixed brisket was perfect! And I suggest you don't skip the banana pudding!

This was the first stop on a weekday BBQ crawl. Rules were brisket, sausage and wildcard, this locations wildcard was rib... the rib was the surprise. Very tender and fall off the bone deliciousness. Something about going into smoke room to order and the screen door that makes me keep Coming back to this place..

Bad a** Pit b*t**es and meat slingers!

Drove past here a million times and never stopped. Sampled the brizzy and sausage. Both were top tier against Blacks, TerryB and Kreuz.. with the outlier quality being awesome heavy smoke! Small joint that feels like you want a hometown bbq joint to be. I'll be stopping again to try the rest. *neat ordering experience in the smokin cave too

    Trifecta!

Line was to the door but probably only took us 30 minutes or so to get to the smoker room and get the meat. Food is great. We did not even get sides.... Pure BBQ for us this trip. Excellent mustard based (?) sauce! Brisket was good! Ribs a little overdone But sausage was great and made it worth the trip!

Smokehouse was not too hot, plenty of staff behind both counters. Service was fast, food was hot, tables were clean.

I waited many years to visit city market based on all the hype I read and I was disappointed.. staff were courteous I ordered sliced brisket and sausage. It had the appearance of some very dry shoe leather flavorless fat and dry. Maybe this place did in fact had great bbq years ago or maybe the people going here are use to poor quality of meat the sausage itself was meh and I wasn't moved either way the mustard based sauce had a slight tang nothing to write home about The brisket and the sausage costed 27.00 I won't be back

Short line outside of restaurant, ...longer line inside.

I just love the charm of nostalgic small country towns characterized by a railroad track running along the edge of town. Luling is that type of town and I visited for City Market BBQ. The layout of the restaurant is a little quirky with two separate ordering areas: one for the smoked meats (brisket, pork ribs, sausage, the other for sides (potato salad and beans). My wife and I ordered a little of each. By little, I mean more than two people should eat for lunch. We favored the ribs over the other meats, as they were flavorful (with or without sauce) and tender. The brisket was good, but a little light on flavor (seasoning). The sausage was lean and juicy with good flavor, but impossible to eat with knife and fork because the casing was loosely packed. All the meats were a value compared to other BBQ restaurants. The sides were good and the portions were generous for the price. Nostalgic BBQ, in a nostalgic town, at a fair price, ...worth a visit.

Outside the place, very retro looking

Ask the Community - City Market

Is this a locals only place?

Nope. Tons of people eat there and it has become a bit of a Mecca in the BBQ world. Last time I was there, there were a ton of Asian tourists there. No reason in the world for them to have gone to Luling, TX, if not for the mind blowing City Market!… Read more

This time instead of exploring their packaged snack products I thought about how much room we have left in our car and flying it home so I decided against it. I did buy 3 of their small cup size Blue Bell dark chocolate ice cream- for all of us but the cashier gave only one spoon. It tasted so good I had hubs go get me a large size one since I didn't eat a normal lunch and it was past 5 pm. While I waited in the car with the grandpup. I wanted to find some Bucee items for Doc since she's been our road trip driver plus made all the arrangements for hotels, tickets to parks, dinner show, etc. We all got different things: hubs got small bags of jerky, Doc got her favorite brisket sandwich to share with her Frenchie, a sausage on a stick and 3 peach cobblers for each of us to try. I like the large amount of clean restroom stalls plus soap. The cone of warmed sugary pecans and cinnamon bites were a sweet snack- finally gone from the first Buc-ee's a week ago. Before leaving Doc had us take a selfie and a nice gentleman also took a couple for us too.

Possibly an unpopular opinion, but... my last visit here was less than satisfactory. We grabbed lunch on our way to Houston. Our lunch consisted of brisket sandwich, chicken tenders & fries, and the three meat sandwich. I'm pretty sure their meat is not a true cut of brisket. Its consistency is like mush, and not like muscle fibers. There was nothing lean brisket vs fatty brisket. The brisket had holes throughout, making it look even more like an ultra processed deli meat or even lab grown. I was disgusted, to say the least. They also have ZERO options for people conscious of the ingredient lists. We bought popcorn and the bag was open at the bottom. I opted the top and it was super stale. I realized it was open on the bottom and the store game me a hard time about exchanging it. It's pretty clear the sealing process failed for this bag. We won't be shopping here anymore, nor will we eat their food. But if you're visiting Texas and come across one, it's a fun stop to pass time.

Okay, so this was a weird experience…read more I was basically driving in a trance, having left the house at 5:00AM to drop off one of my girls at the Austin airport and then heading to Harlingen. I was on day three of being really sick, and I had gotten very little sleep that night because of all the sinus pain. I was blindly following the GPS and came upon this gas station/convenience store out in the middle of nowhere and decided to pull in at the rear of the place and sleep for a while. I don't even know if the place was open; it was still dark when I got there. I woke up and it was daylight. I needed something to drink, so I pulled around to the front of the place, parked crookedly and shuffled in. I saw they had breakfast tacos and realized I was hungry, too. I picked two random ones, bought them and left. One was brisket, the other was some mixture of eggs, potatoes, beans, bacon, sausage, cheese and whatever else they could think of to throw into it. The brisket didn't look great, so I set it aside and took a bite of the stuffed one. It was really, really good. So, I tried the brisket. Now, I have to say, if I bought a brisket plate and this is what they brought me, I'm not sure how I'd feel about it. But, as a taco (basically, just meat in a flour tortilla), it was absolutely delicious. I will say they were a bit on the pricey side. The two tacos and a 20 oz bottle of Diet Dr. Pepper was over $16. But, both of those tacos rank up there with the best I've had.
