Ribs, Loaded Mashed Potatoes and brisket
    LaToya S.

I see a lot of reviews about how tasty the meats are. I'd have to say, I wasn't very impressed. I ordered ribs and brisket with double loaded potatoes. The ribs were so tough. I did it finish eating them. The taste wasn't appealing to my taste buds either. The brisket was dry and bland as well. I was hoping the bark would have some type of flavor but it didn't. I'm thankful for the barbecue sauce because it did give it some kind of moisture for me to be able to chew and swallow down without choking. The loaded mashed potatoes weren't good either. They kind of had an instant taste to them, kind of like an imitation taste. Supposedly, there is supposed to have been cheese and other stuff in them but I did not taste none of it. That was kind of my fault because I assumed they would be loaded like you would get in a restaurant with cheese and bacon and chives on top but their definition of loaded is different from the normal. The employees were very sweet and based on that, I give them three stars but as far as the taste of the food goes, I was not impressed at all. I attached a photo of my plate after I was done eating.

Easily the best bbq in san marcos, the hatch sausage is yum. The cabbage is unique and good, mashed potatoes are excellent.

We got there Thursday a little after 4pm opening in a downpour so there wasn't a line. The day's special--written on a white board--was an alligator po boy and Mr R had never had alligator so that was easy. For myself I chose the soulful catfish bites from the menu at the window (he posts the week's menu on FB, although I didn't see sides mentioned). As sides I chose sweet potato fries and okra, for dessert the blueberry cobbler. One lemonade and one sweet tea. Lord, it was tasty. The gator po boy had a soft white sub roll, untoasted, with iceberg, pickles and tomatoes. The gator chunks were about 1.5 to 2x the size of chicken nuggets, with a perfect crunchy coating and not greasy. The meat was not dry, the flavor was good. The catfish bites were a little smaller than the gator chunks, and with the most perfectly seasoned, crisp, ungreasy, cornmeal coating. The fish was cooked perfectly and couldn't have been hotter/fresher out of the kitchen. The sweet potato fries were lightly salted, cooked expertly and came in a generous pile. The okra came in a light batter and tasted so fresh and green--Mr R fell in love with them (he'd only had okra boiled/wet before), but also blasphemed them with ketchup because he's a terrible person. Each plate came with ketchup, tartar sauce (more like mayo, really), and hot sauce. Two packets of each condiment for each plate which was more than we used. The cobbler. OH! The cobbler. He'd upsized it as a kindness for us, and I still don't know how exactly he made the sugary crunchy cobbler bits as half of them *still* had powerful crunch this morning after sitting overnight. The blueberry part was lovely jammy sticky but not over sweet. It was a wonderful dessert yesterday and a fabulous breakfast this morning. My single point of retraction? The now-moved-on LeStourgeon had the superior po boy set up (in my nascent opinion) with toasty bread and more produce to include romaine, onion and avocado plus a schmear of mayo. That's it, outside of that this meal was perfection. It's not cheap, the wait's never been excessive, it is WORTH it. Forgot to mention he also had a table/chairs set up under a tent which is a nice alternative to eating in your car if you can't wait to get home with good food.

This is a fast casual spot -- you order at the counter, they give you a ticket, and call your name when it's ready. No tip required, and service was really kind. The owner was there and was super nice as well. Seating is pretty unique: two long wooden benches, so you might end up sitting close to other diners, but it makes for a lively, friendly environment. They also have three unique sauces worth calling out: a spicy mayo (pretty standard, but rich and delicious), a curry mayo (strong curry flavor in every bite -- not for everyone, but I loved it), and a wasabi mayo (never had this before, and it was honestly great -- strong wasabi flavor that paired really well with my dish). Chicken Teriyaki Bento ($10.50, 7/10) -Comes with a side of rice and ginger, both of which paired really well with the wasabi mayo -Portion size was relatively large -- left me full, but really only enough for one person -Topped with a crunchy garlic/panko crunch that paired nicely with the chicken -Teriyaki sauce on top was a little too salty; would've been better with less salt -They give you a water bottle on the side, which was much appreciated since everything ran on the salty side Overall, a great fast casual spot to hang out with friends and get good food at a good price. Really enjoyed their three sauces -- the mayo, wasabi, and curry were all unique, and I haven't seen that combo anywhere else. Great to see that adventurous side.

Chunk Deuce BBQ is a Veteran-owned food truck, and it was super cool getting to learn more about Adam (the owner) and how this is a true family affair. Reminded my of my days of helping my parents at our family businesses while growing up. Not only will you be able to snag some damn good bbq, but you can even snag a sno-cone to fulfill the inner child in ya. Back to the grilled cheese though-- the crispy, buttery, Texan bread slices were met with the most gooiest amount of cheese. Stack some brisket into the sandwich and get ready for a delicious yet hearty meal. I recommend adding some bbq sauce on the side so you can have a dippable moment. If I'm ever back in the area, I will definitely be back for another one. Prices are super reasonable btw!
