The owners are really nice but all they do is buy from Kroger and hijack the prices. I love supporting locally owned businesses but his prices for grapes are like 8 dollars which is crazy. im writing this in relation to the City Market on Cooper st. (owned by the same people as the one on Main st. downtown). If there were other convenience stores in Cooper Young(and Downtown Memphis), this store would not survive. Anyone notice how none of the shelves have prices on them? Everything from a Reeses to a 2 liter of Coke, you will not know how much it costs unless you go up to the register and ask. They don't advertise it because it's too expensive - off the charts expensive. i bought an 8.5oz red bull and 2 hostess honey buns. my prices was 11.27. down the street at mapco. the red bull is 2.59 and the honey buns are 1.25 a piece. That's 5.09 plus tax at Mapco. how the F*$k can they think these prices are fair? You know why? People go in and pay them is why. They are foreign as well. And we all know people from India and other third world countries LOVE overindulging in greed via our stuipidity. And i also work for a certain company that delivers to them. all they do is buy kroger food and jack up prices. People, STOP SUPPORTING THIS. It's a cafe inside a convenience store but can offer a quick bite and some respite from the Memphis heat. Quick in a more southernly sense - of course; don't confuse this with NYC quick. Lots of salads, juices and smoothies on the menu here. We tried the tropical and the green smoothie - not disappointed in our selection. Wanted mango lassi but they were out of mangoes on this day. Smoothies were freshly made - no surprises and no added sugar. Mediterranean sandwich was big and packed with all the goodies. Blue cheese panini had grilled onions, red and green peppers, sun dried tomatoes - all good, but the flat bread for panini was so-so. They have around 4-5 tables plus stools and sidebars for you to sit and enjoy or grab and go. Prices were moderate - around $28 bucks for two sandwiches and two drinks. read more

The Mrs. and I found City Market, and we split the chicken salad with wheat Berry bread, and it was fabulous, especially because of the delicious bread!! I frequent city market at least once a week. My favorite dish is the Tuscan powerhouse sandwich and the omelette (served weekends only) are fantastic. These two dishes were the sole reason for any stars at this location. As far as the grocery selection, it's hit or miss with some items being overpriced but others being surprisingly cheap. Down to the meat of the dining situation: With the exception of one young kitchen staff member, this has to be the rudest group of staff I have ever encountered; to the point that it's comical. On one of my last carry out phone orders they answered the phone with "what choo want?!". Nonetheless, it is certainly a Memphis experience to say the least to interact with these staff members if you are looking for an authentic experience. read more

City market is pretty small, but they have international foods - POCKY!, fruit, veggies, some specialty stuff, (I found buckwheat flour & quinoa there), as well as a deli. I'm so glad that Easy Way (which incidently, smells like wet dog. Contrary to popular belief [and by popular, I mean me], they *do not* keep a wet dog in the store at night. I asked and they looked at me weird, but I digress...) and Jack's have some viable competition. Easy Way smells gross and Jack's is WAY over priced. Love this place for a healthy (but not tooooo healthy!) lunch. They have great salads and hot sandwiches. My favorites are the Asian salad and Tuscan powerhouse. The smoothies are also good. In love with their freshly squeezed juices! Quaint and cozy yet extremely spacious City Market is a haven for organic/ farm to table food lovers. We ordered the Tuscan chicken sandwich and Cajun chicken sandwich both were delicious and you could bite freshness every single time. Thier juices were out of this world we had ABC(Apple, Beet, Carrot) and orange juice it's probably the best you can find in Memphis. Definitely going back for thier fresh juices! read more

This has got to be the best deal in town on breakfast biscuits! For under $3 you can get an egg and cheese biscuit; they also have bacon, chicken, and sausage additions as well. Overall, it's a cute deli and convenience store wrapped into one and it works perfectly. Glad to have eaten breakfast there. There is finally a place to buy groceries in downtown Memphis. As the previous closest options were Miss Cordelia's on Mud Island and the Kroger on Poplar and Cleveland, City Market offers downtown residents a much closer place to pick up foodstuffs. City Market sits right on the trolley line at the corner of Union and South Main. It's a smaller store, but it covers all of the essentials. It has a small produce/dairy aisle where you can pick up fruits, vegetables, eggs and milk. There is also an extensive selection of oils, vinegars and condiments for a variety of ethnic foods. You can even pick up sundry items like lotion, toothpaste, shampoo and soap. City Market also has a prepared food section with ready-to-eat entrees, sides and desserts. I am so bummed that City Market came to Downtown Memphis after I had relocated to Midtown. I cannot tell you how many times I had to drive out of my way and wait in the enormous lines at Kroger to pick up the 1-2 things that Frank's didn't carry. Let's face it, if you lived Downtown before City Market you were kinda screwed in the way of grocery options. City reminds me of a very tiny version of Whole Foods or Trader Joes. They cater to a very specific group of people and really only carry top of the line items. The fact that they are the size of a convenience store makes this a bit remarkable. They have a wide array of vegetarian and vegan options, as well as a pretty impressive selection of international items. I must also mention they carry some local to Memphis items, like my beloved Las Delicias chips and dips mmmmm!!!! The deli is what blows this place out of the water. I've had a few sandwiches from here- though the names fail me at the moment, the stand outs were a BBQ concoction and a little number with curry. The soups change daily and are homemade- never had one I didn't love. The best part of this deli is they don't just cater in sandwiches and "normal" deli items. I've been in on days when there are large trays of lasagna sitting in the window, hot pastas and again with the international cuisines. I've seen everything from Greek to Indian available hot and ready to your liking. The desserts look pretty freaking amazing as well, though I have not yet tried them. I should also mention for those of you who prefer to drink your lunch, they have a large smoothie menu. read more

I've decided I like this place for what it is-- a small, conveniently located downtown grocery & deli. Being downtown, yes it's a bit pricey, as are most similar stores in downtown areas elsewhere. They do have some fresh produce priced about the same as Kroger. I like that they carry both prepackaged and fresh Boars Head brand meats and cheeses. They have a myriad of health food store items that you would find at one of the larger Krogers or in Whole Foods, but you will pay a little more for the downtown convenience. They also have a few local items, including J Brooks coffee, Rendezvous popcorn, and chips from Las Delicias. I can't speak to the prepared foods since I haven't tried them. I don't recommend the smoothies though-- just fruit and ice. read more

This is a review of only the deli and food service portion of City Market. I have eaten lunch at this establishment a handful of times. Each time I have eaten there I have either gotten a sandwich, a salad, soup, or a combination thereof. There are many different sandwich offerings, which range from the standard staples of a chicken salad sandwich to the eclectic in the form of a mediterranean veggie sandwich or a "Blazing Beale Panini" that has Curry chicken, lettuce, tomato, cucumber, and onion on Naan bread. I recently tried the Tuscan Powerhouse sandwich that has grilled, herb-rubbed chicken that is combined with provolone, pesto, sautéed mushrooms and onions, all on potato rosemary bread, that is thereafter grilled panini style. One word... Outstanding. The mainstay when it comes to soups is City Market's tomato basil soup. It is very well seasoned and well done. However, it is definitely not the best that I've ever had, nor did I expect it to be. When you're done with your main course, there are offerings of gourmet cakes that are baked fresh. They have chocolate, red velvet, coconut, caramel, or strawberry on a regular basis, or at least every time I have been there. I have tried both the chocolate cake and the red velvet cake, and they are both absolutely outstanding. So, do yourself a favor, and get a piece of cake when you're done with your main course. All in all, this is a great addition to the downtown scene, with their great, simple offerings for lunch that are done with quality ingredients and attention to detail that you don't normally get in a standard sandwich shop. As a convenient store, I'd give it 2 stars at most. The selection is poor, and wayyy overpriced. I once bought a non-family sized box of Frosted Flakes and it was $6 or $7 dollars. Their perishable items like milk are usually right on the verge of expiration, or have already expired. I've usually been stuck buying milk that's only 3 or 4 days away from expiration. Most of the time, I've found it's better for me to just suck it up and drive to Kroger. Their deli and pre-made foods are pretty good, and I've give them 4 stars for what it is. Truthfully, I don't believe their sandwiches to be that good. They use way too much meat and it essentially feels like you're just eating a fistful of deli meat with no bread, lettuce, tomato, or sauce to be detected. Their breakfast and boxed wraps are pretty good however. They do make a decent omelette and it's one of the few places on main street that is actually open for breakfast so you don't have to wait for brunch. It's also one of the few places where you can go to get a smoothie. read more

Just got a Cajun Turkey Sandwich. It took about 15+ minutes to make. I started to get really excited because I figured that this sandwich was about to be epic. Any turkey sandwich that takes over 15 minutes has to be epic. I finally got my sandwich. At first glance, I thought... no... this can't be... there is gonna be something under that slice of bread that is going to make me scream with joy. Opened the sandwich. Nope. A recent visit downtown led to me City Market, where one of my commenters Samu referred me to. Really, I got the idea from Paul Ryburn, who boasted about their mystery chips. Scott, his mom, and I stopped in for a snack as we were exploring the downtown area. We got a few drinks, and I insisted that we buy the mystery chips that Paul raved about. I do not understand why they are called "Mystery Chips", as they are very thick cut kettle chips with seasoning. Don't get me wrong, they are great chips. I love that they are so thickly cut. I love the light seasoning they have on them as well. I also love that you can taste the actual potato. However, I don't understand their mystery. Either way, they are a great snack if you need something to much on downtown, while exploring. City Market also has sandwiches and lots of other great snacks, and a small grocery section for you Downtown residents. Stop by and peak in. read more

I love coming here on my lunch breaks! Their sandwiches are delicious (as is the rest of their menu, but I like sandwiches!). The owner will give you a free taste of their homemade Indian food on Wednesdays if you come in to pick up an order. They also are a small grocery, with a fairly wide variety of hard to find foods and spices from other countries as well as healthy alternatives you might find in a Whole Foods. It's a fun place to visit, and the owner is very active in making sure the customers are happy to be there and happy when they leave. read more

I was craving smoothies so badly one day and stumbled upon this place on Yelp. At first, I was a bit skeptical since when you walk in, you're in a convenience store. But lo and behold! They have a little cafe that serves juice and smoothies. The smoothies (I was with a few friends) were good and the man who took our order was very nice. I asked for some water and I was told to get some from the soda fountain...and--this is the weird part--another female employee working at the cafe, walks up to our table and adds the water to the bill. Not a word, no explanation. Just comes and does it. I mean it wasn't very much money but I was peeved because 1) No one had mentioned that they charged for water 2) I judge most places that are pretentious enough to charge for a cup of tap water. The nice male employee came up to us and tried to fix the situation by politely apologizing but...ew. I probably would've gone back if I wanted smoothies but now that the Juice Bar is open in Midtown, I'll be going there instead. You just lost a customer over 80 cents (or whatever it was) because of your rude attitude. read more

Cool, funky little grocery in downtown Memphis. Love this place, too bad we found it on our last day there. It's right by the trolley, and the Peabody Hotel area. They had lots of good, healthy snacks, lunches, etc. at good prices. A good place to stock up on supplies so you can avoid eating at the crazy expensive hotel restaurants. Expect higher pricing on organic produce, but this place is a healthier relief from the indulgent restaurants and cafes around Downtown Memphis. Traveling from Los Angles, I'm used to a plethora of healthy options and this compares decently. Their sandwiches, smoothies, juices, espressos are all great and reasonably priced. I would only frown at the minimal produce options. It's a small store, but I've visited smaller with more produce in NYC. Fortunately I did not spot anything that seemed questionable as far as expiration. Give it a try, you will be satisfied...but don't expect to be blown away. read more

I rated them low because, yesterday, I had a second unpleasant experience with the staff. The first was one day not long ago when the chips served with my taco were inedibly stale. When I brought this to the attention of the man who runs the counter, he simply told me that that was all they had. This, despite the fact that this is a "market" which has a half wall of different types of chips for sale. Were one interested in one's customer's satisfaction, one might leverage the available options to replace the stale chips. Because there was no offer to replace the chips with some from the vast selection, I selected some from the wall and shared them with my lunch companion, who had also received stale chips with his tacos. That small bag of corn chips cost me $6. Unbelievable. Yesterday's event began after I had paid for my lunch and was on my way to join my 4 friends (who I had recommended to this place) when I realized I hadn't been given a cup for water. When I asked the clerk for a cup, she told they charge $.50 for a cup of water. After I told her I'd never pay $.50 for a cup of water she proceeded to follow me around the store telling me I'd have to pay $.50 for water. It was bizarre. Most unpleasant. read more

I went to city market after reading the reviews on here. I do have to say it is a bit pricey. The salad was just ok. It is not very big for the price and it only came with one salad dressing. Two dressings were needed since it was such a small container of dressing. I think they have downsized their salads compared to the pictures on here. My salad was nowhere near as large as all the pics on here. I also had the Mediterranean sandwich. It was a very fresh sandwich and was worth the 6.99. I can't speak of the hot food, but it did look good. I probably won't run back and if I do, I will not get a salad. read more
