Mechanical work is expensive and when you need help, City Motor Supply is the place to go. Their integrity is unquestionably the best of any company I have had dealings with. I had a problem with a 5.7 hemi 3rd gen vvt block bought elsewhere and when I built it out that engine blew oil out of the rear crankcase seal. The engine did not run for 30 seconds before blow-by created a big problem. That engine builder was evasive at best. I took my block to city motor supply to have them mic the cylinders. I already knew the problem was on driver's side rear cylinder and I told city motor supply nothing. When I drew out the pistons I found oil between the rings on . Blow by. But I wanted verification. It took them about 5 minutes for no charge to tell me that the previous shop bored 7 cylinders at 20 over and the last cylinder 30 over. The builder put in all 20 over pistons/rings. Thanks for nothing. City Motor Supply dropped what they were doing despite me not calling ahead to check the block. They suggested either going 30 overbore to match them up or sleeveing the 30 overbore cylinder back to 20. I had a bowling buddy who worked in their shop building engines for years. The thing about reviews is that these shops push through a lot of blocks. People with a problem that doesn't get resolved gets a review. All the machine work that is ok you don't hear about. I had buddies in the past who got blocks from city motor supply and didn't have a problem. I appreciate their kindness today and that they independently verified what I already knew. read more

I am giving City Motor Supply a 2-star review, only because management *attempted* to make things right, but ultimately failed - again. I recently took a fully-stripped LT1 block and aluminum heads to CMS for their "Stroker Performance Block Prep" and a "valve job" on the heads. What I got in return was a damaged block, covered in cheap paint, and heads now requiring extensive repairs to make them usable again - maybe. When I dropped off my parts, my "customer service rep" - David - provided very little insight on the process, requirements and expectations of services being provided. When I attempted to show David all of my components in the parking lot, he was quick to respond with: "Let's just go inside." My request was to line hone, bore and deck the block, along with the CNC machining required to make room for the 400 crank. I also indicated that I was planning to personally put new valves/springs in the heads. Finally, I stated that I wanted everything "cleaned up, true and ready for reassembly." I was told it would take a couple weeks. OK. I received a call indicating that my parts were ready for pickup. When I backed my truck up to load the block, it was evident that my custom engine cradle was gone. My freshly prepped block was now wrapped in plastic/cardboard and sitting on a dolly. In order to get the block into my truck, the block was rolled onto the pavement and then lifted by hand. This was FAIL #1. This is where things take a turn for the worse... When I returned home, unwrapped the layers of plastic and began inspecting the work performed, I found the following problems: - THREE of the OEM main cap bolts (for the windage tray) were missing and replaced with random bolts. They used random, 3rd-party bolts to line bore the main caps. BIG FAIL #2. - The #3 main journal has a protruding nick on the bearing mating surface, preventing the shell from sitting flush. BIG FAIL #3. - The register on the #4 main cap is LOOSE, allowing you to wiggle the cap by hand. There is no "click" when mating it to the parting line. BIG FAIL #4. - The heads were not cleaned, carbon still in the bowls, seats re-cut using old guides, inconsistent seat heights, one random guide installed, copper spray paint across the top of the heads, the name "Jeff" written on them in blue marker. FAIL #5. - THREE of the intake runners have been damaged by over-clamping / ham-handed behavior. FAIL #6. - The name "Jeff" was on the work order; "Josh" was on the invoice. Whenever David would give me specs, he would call me on the phone. Did he think he was talking to "Josh" or "Jeff"? FAIL #7. - The original water pump bearing was not returned. Old parts should ALWAYS be returned to the customer. If this isn't common practice at CMS - it should be. FAIL #8. - The decking of the block was not machined cleanly. The chamfering on the top of the cylinder bores also varies from side-to-side. Was the block decked more on one side? BIG FAIL #9. - They painted the block with cheap black paint. This was NOT REQUESTED, nor discussed. FAIL #10. The block and heads were taken to another shop for inspection. As expected, all cylinders were .002" overbored from what was requested. The new main journals are all line bored beyond factory specifications. Everything is loose AF. The heads will need to be repaired and rebuilt correctly. I'll never be returning to CMS. Dallas deserves better than this. If you care about the attention to detail being shown towards your build, you'd be better off spending a few more bucks and looking elsewhere. If you REALLY want to avoid a headache, just go get a crate motor from Summit, Jeg's, Speedway Motors, Blueprint, ATK or Skip White Performance...basically anywhere else. At least you will get a warranty on the motor. As a lifetime gear head and a relatively new resident of Dallas, I was hoping to build a relationship with a shop that I could trust to perform the work at a level that portrays pride and craftsmanship. I brought in a worn-out 1MZFE Toyota motor to have it completely redone. It took a little while to get the parts, but not only did they finish it, but delivered it to my house. After putting it back together, I found a minor issue with the build and called David at CMS. He was quick to respond and quick to take responsibility for the issue. He and the entire staff went way out of their way to rectify the issue and get me back to getting my vehicle back running. In fact, they did more than they said they were going to do to ensure a quality build. I can't say enough about the character and integrity with which they were to work with. Don't trust this place with your business!! They use cheap parts to rebuild their motors. Mine was never right from the first month! They hold on to your vehicle for months and don't do a damn thing to fix anything. They basically wait till your warranty is up and tell you to kick rocks, they won't work on it anymore. I had my engine pulled, rebuilt, and installed by city motors on February of 2022. David was great through the entire process, he let me pic up parts to deep clean and paint and was extremely helpful and polite. In may of 2022 I noticed the valve covers were starting to deep, I didn't do anything about it because it's a 27 year old bronco and it's gonna leak. But then about 4 months later I noticed I was losing a fair amount of oil. So I checked and my front main seal, and valve covers were leaking pretty heavily, and my oil pressure gauge would randomly go up and down while driving. So I took it to them since it was still under warranty. They took about 3.5 weeks and I got it back and assumed all was well. Whenever I got it back I checked the oil level it and it was barely on the dipstick and they didn't clean up any excess oil from when the valve covers and front main were leaking before replacement. So I cleaned it and drove it maybe a few hundred miles and checked and all 3 gaskets were still leaking. At this point my warranty was up so I just dealt with it. That was a few months ago. I'm now doing some other work on the engine and decided to do the valve cover gaskets since I was in there. Upon taking the valve covers off I noticed 3 of the 6 bolts were finger tight and after removing the cover I saw they had put silicone all over the corners of the cork gaskets. And to add to that, I took my intake off and noticed the throttle body gasket looked like it was re used, I can't say for sure but it's cracked and super brittle, has no characteristics of a gasket that's been on there for 10k miles. The valve cover gaskets even looked re used, so I hate to say it but I doubt they even replaced the front main seal. It's a shame, the customer service and build process were great, but the final product was not of the same quality. read more

I'd like to start by saying that I'm not a mechanic. I am very savvy with vehicles and engines, and this install was done with the help of a mechanic. This business was recommended by a friend. I spoke with John a few times before deciding which motor to buy. The purchase process was pretty seamless. However, I've since encountered a few problems.. 1. From the beginning, I was told that there was a core charge of $250 unless you bring in a block to swap. Ok, no issue there. After dropping off the block I took out and bringing it in, I was then informed that they would have to inspect it to make sure it was usable. Of course after that, it was conveniently not, and I didn't get any refund. 2. When I picked up the motor and all of the gaskets, I was informed that everything from the original motor would fit right up to the new motor. Incorrect... the dipstick on the new motor was passenger side. The dipstick length was not specified. The oil pan depth was not specified. The new engine had been "decked", lowering the clearance of the distributor requiring the addition of spacers that nobody carries (these had to be ordered online from summit racing). The temp sender was smaller in size, as well. It simply took a lot of back and forth to different supply places to pick up parts that were initially ensured of fitment from the old motor. Really just an inconvenience. 3. After getting back to Austin, I noticed a small oil leak. After trouble shooting, I took the truck w new motor to the local mechanic (who I've been to for 3-4 years now) and told him what was going on. After they looked at it, the rear main seal was cracked, and it needed to be replaced. Honestly, it came from City Motor Supply that way. I never dropped the motor or banged it on anything. This is where my opinion started to change. The paperwork states that the product is warrantied for 1 year or 12,000 miles from the date of purchase. Ok that's fine with me. I wasn't expecting any problems. However, when I spoke to CityMotorSupply, they seemed skeptical, but ensured me that any work deemed faulty would be paid for up to $400. My mistake was thinking I would be given $400. Wrong. After sending the defective part in, I was credited only $200 on a part that cost me over $1000 to get out and replaced. The transmission had to be removed from the motor, which is where the majority of the cost came from. So I was pretty disappointed. 3. After picking up the truck after the rear main seal was replaced, the oil pump that I installed decided to freeze, shooting oil everywhere. I went back to the mechanic, and purchased a new oil pump and had them put it in. None of us could figure out what happened to the oil pump. Maybe it was a manufacturing problem. It just bothered me that one more problem was encountered, and because of the low cost of the oil pump, I decided to just eat it and not worry about contacting CMS about it. My confidence in the customer service of City Motor Supply was already skeptical, and the quality of workmanship wasn't as highly regarded anymore. If I have any additional issues, I'll post them here. To be honest, I'm worried about the internal parts and the potential of the motor. All of this being said, the overall experience wasn't terrible. I just felt like some of the business practices was a little shoddy and maybe more information beforehand could have helped. Do I hold City Motor Supply responsible for the faulty equipment. Yes. Could the warranty be better? Yes. Would I purchase another product from City Motor Supply? No. read more

I sent a letter to City on Monday and the next afternoon I got a call from the President of City. He addressed my concerns and it seems a lot of the issues reported by my engine guy were nitpicky and misinformed statements. (The guy assembling my engine is a high performance engine builder and a lot of the things he told me were wrong WOULD be problems for a high performance build but for a mild marine build were non-issues.) They also offered to inspect the motor and re-assemble it for only the parts costs because my product warranty had expired. (That's a little bogus in my opinion because if you tell them its for marine use the warranty is 30 days but otherwise the warranty is 12-month, 12,000 miles but the engine is just an automotive engine until all the marine accessories are applied and the engine is put in a boat...) At this time, I'm bumping my review back up to 4 stars. read more

Starting with my 1st call, the team helped me find the correct engine at a fantastic price followed by fast shipping. Even after my purchase was complete the team will still take time to answer any questions or give helpful advice. Episode III: Revenge of the Machinist. Let me start by saying that I haven't had any issues with City Motor Supply's work. They actually do good work... Until this time. Since the last review, I've brought them another set of heads that they resurfaced and they were just fine. This most recent experience has left something to be desired. The take away is that we'll need to check their work from now on to make sure they did their job. We had a cylinder head with a burnt valve so it needed a valve job. The first problem we found is that the resurfacing was too rough. It's as if they ran the face mill too quickly and it left machining marks all the way across the surface. You could have played it in a redneck band it was so rough. On assembly we pressure tested the cooling system and of course they head gasket leaked all the way around. We had to bring it back to them and they made an excuse about it would have been fine had we used a composite gasket, never you mind that they don't offer a composite gasket for this engine. Why you wouldn't just make the surface smooth so any gasket you used would make more sense to me. There was also a mention that it could be a new machinist that used the cast iron setup to mill this aluminum head and the cast iron setup runs at a faster speed. Once we had the vehicle together, it started up and had a misfire. We chased our tail for a day and finally realized that City Motor Supply had adjusted the valves too tight and although we were getting plenty of compression, the overtightened valves were causing a misfire. Again, I'm disappointed that they didn't do a quality job. If the machinist is using the wrong setup and adjusting valves incorrectly, y'all really need to get on him. City motor rebuilt and installed a motor in my Nissan Pickup. They called me to ask if the truck had a oil dipstick and that my radiator had a hole in it.I told them all the engine parts were there and that my radiator was brand new when I brought it in.Any way I took possession of the truck took it home and found out the timing was 15 degrees off. I took a sheet out of my shop manual and took the truck down to them to get the timing reset as you have to re orient the oil pump gear. About 15000. miles later I heard a horrible noise in the front of my engine, I took it to another shop and had them replace the timing chain and pull the pan to check for metal shavings.I would have this shop do another motor but the customer will have to stay on top of these guys as they do sloppy work. They wont even apologize after they get your cash. read more

If you want to be treated rude and talked down to when you call just ask for Ken. I've had the non-pleasure of talking to him 3 times. Once on a query about price for CMS to rebuild one of our 6.0's. Another when my guy dropped the motor off he called demanding an invoice # on the return motor and warranty information. I kept trying to tell him it was to rebuild I don't have an invoice, but he kept interrupting me with interrogating demeanor and tone. I really don't know why he was calling or dealing with my motor. I had spoke with another "gentleman" before we took it, and he said to ask for him when we dropped it of. My guy did but somehow ended up with an interrogation. (WOW... I thought I was the customer!) So when the motor was ready he, Ken, called and left a message on the shop landline it was ready. I guess because I was extremely busy and didn't call him back within an hour he called again. One of the ladies who answered the phone got a recording about a line of credit.....so she hung up on the recording. The phone immediately rang again, same recording same hang up on our end. (we have caller ID get tones of robo calls a day) No sooner than she hung it rang again but instead of answering with our company greeting she saw (caller ID) it was the same caller. This time it was the RUDE salesman Ken in his crap demeaning tone demanding to speak with me. She told him he was being rude, and he said ".....if you think I am........". She gave him my cell, called, I answered, and he said my motor was ready just like the voice message he left. Anyway, I got a text from the lady who said this rude man is about to call you. Yep! RUDE Ken. Oh, she texted me because that lady he was so rude to is my wife. I have more motors needing rebuilt to go back in our trucks but will defiantly NOT be taking them back to City Motors Dallas!! Paul H. read more

Spend the extra bucks and find a real place to get a motor. I have had terrible dealings with City Motor Supply and after asking around lots of DFW auto shops won't deal with them. I had them build me a sbc 355 claimer with vortec heads, motor started knocking within 100 miles. Called them, they said pull it bring it back and they would rebuild it. I re-installed the "supposedly" rebuilt motor and it knocked immediately on start up. Called them back and they said drive it in and show us. I did, they said pull it again and we will build you a completely different motor. I get the 3rd motor and install it and it had no oil pressure. I call them back and they tell me I don't know how to prime a motor and it must be cavitating. Under no circumstance, even over filling the pan with oil to cover the pump could I get oil pressure. I finally pull this motor and pull the pan to find a oil pump bolt that is too long and the oil pump just loosely hanging. Not only did it not have pressure but the pump bolt was bottomed out into the rear main bearing. After several heated conversations with management I ended up just getting burned. I paid $1200 plus a running core and all they would do is give me the $1200 if I brought it back, no core. No deal, I installed a new pump and bearings and the motor still runs today. They can have their way and I would like to say that I have successfully kept tens of thousands of dollars of business away from these poor businessmen. I am the guy with the DON'T BUY CITY MOTOR SUPPLY sticker on the rear window of my truck which visits drag strips and circle tracks all over Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas, Arkansas and Louisiana. I get lots of questions and then I tell them this lovely story. Stay away, stay very far away. read more

I've just completed my first experience with City Motor Supply (CMS) and thought I'd take a few minutes let others know about it. After researching several good options available in the DFW area, talking to four different builders, visiting with several references for a couple of those builders, I determined that CMS was my best option. I'm an engineer by trade so by nature I'm very detailed and I can be tough customer for anyone I do business with. ;) I have a performance SBC street motor with a bad crank and a history of blowing head gaskets. I needed to fix it pretty quickly, improve reliability if possible and get the work done in less than 90 days. I'll say that the ultimate solution CMS offered was a great value and actually exceeded my expectations. My budget was reasonable so "least cost provider" was not a consideration in my selection process. The 350 evolved into a fully balanced and documented 383 with a forged bottom end (crank, rods, splayed main bearing setup). They serviced and installed the existing Edelbrock Performer RPM heads and SIM tested the longblock to ensure good compression and proper oiling. The work was done on time and from my post-delivery scrutiny, it was done very professionally. Whether your needs are an engine exchange, a performance rebuild or a new build, I would suggest you talk to CMS and see if they can help. I'm completely satisfied and would recommend them to anyone. read more

John dear is your man , he's that type that will talk with you about the build and will make sure parts are gonna last , I bought a short block for my boat 351w roller , and I mistakenly overheated it , so I tore it apart because it was making scraping noises , I found ring wear from the heat , but after removing down to the crank , I was surprised to see how clean and even had chanfered the oil holes in the crank . I took it back along with heads and they are gonna check it out . Yeah I may eat $500 for the rebuild . But I trust it will get checked out thoroughly and I'll have it back in 3-4 days !! Update to my July 2nd review. I received a message to come and get my engine shortly after posting the review. Upon arrival, I was met by the owner and given an ultimatum, take the engine as they built it, with the cracked block, the incorrect pistons installed, and without the deck milled to .035 as was agreed to when I dropped off the engine, and as I was billed for, and leave, or leave my engine and my money, or they would file criminal trespass if I argued. I took the engine as evidence and left without discussion, as it was clear, the owner was not interested in any level of compromise. I would have been to negotiate, and pay them for any work they did to the crankshaft, camshaft, connecting rods as long as I the parts I dropped off were returned, I am not unreasonable. But no further negotiation was offered. read more

Called to see if they sold refurbished engines and since they didn't I asked for a referral and the person I talked to bluntly said no then hung up. If that's how the treat people over the phone than if I ever needed what services they provided I'd find somewhere else to go. read more

This place is a ripoff. I have 7200.00 tied up in fixing their poor motor rebuilding . I paid 2900 for a premium long block that keeps breaking lifters. They paid my mechanic 400 dollars to change the motor after the first time. O boy I had to pay the other 600. Now it has bit the dust for the third time and they just wont pay a dime to pull it out and put it back in. I got 400 miles out of the first motor and when I got it back the second time it was leaking water from the heads. got it back and went 3500 miles . Stay far away from this company.
