The beautiful bar and tin ceilings are amazing

Visiting Michigan and heard this place has a great vibe and good food. Back in the day Earnest Hemingway drank here. Other than being put on hold for a long time , I finally gave up and just went. We were seated right away and our server came over quickly and took our drink order. Not long after that, a young man came around with a tray full of warm biscuits . Warm butter too! Willow was our server and did a great job. My husband loved his fish sandwich and I had one of their burgers . French onion soup was a starter and just lovely. The cherry flavored potatoe chips that come with the sandwiches are very good! All in all, a fun dining experience .

Located in Old Town Petosky, a cozy little spot next to Pennsylvania park. The building itself was built in 1875 by Alanso McCarty and named McCarty hall. Over 100 years ago Ernest Hemingway hung out here (the Annex). The atmosphere is near perfect. It's busy, but friendly and inviting. The folks here are cheery and festive. The ambiance is enviable. Pans of biscuits are frequented through the room. Biscuits that are to die for. Especially, if you get them hot with enough melted butter! We just stopped in for a quick pick-me-up light meal, after a long day of adventure. Starting with a hummus plate that was so generous it's a meal all by itself. They also provide an over abundance of pita bread to go with. It could be the Tahiti paste-fresh garlic that gives it an incredibly unique taste. A must try. Thinking outside the box a bit, we ordered the vegetarian stir-fry and added grilled chicken. Another fabulous dish that was so large, we ended up splitting it. All-in-all, the prices are par to a bit below par for Petoskey. You definitely receive a fair amount of food for the dollar. When you add in the people, the decor and the atmosphere, you have a definite winner in the City Park Grill! 09/23

Found this on Yelp when six of us got to Petosky, and they loved me for it! What an amazing place - the history of it is great fun, the food was excellent and Meghan was a great server. We all started with the sweet drop biscuits - excellent. We all took a moment to enjoy those. From there we ordered the smoked turkey club, a burger, French onion soup, Iron Horse Root Beer - outstanding - and the club sandwich. No misses! Loved our meal here and would go back for sure!

Neat restaurant and bar in Petoskey, it is located on top of the hill, so it's a great view of the downtown area. The restaurant inside is very old and neat with a very large wooden bar. When we walked in, we were greeted with a man with a baking sheet of hot biscuits that he followed us to the table and gave us one as we sat down it was a great treat! I had the wings which were good. They had a homemade buffalo sauce, which was more like a sweet and sour different and good. I wouldn't call them spicy, but they also came with a great homemade blue cheese dressing. My mom had the turkey sandwich which came with homemade mustard, coleslaw, and it was very good as well! The restaurant filled up fast with fall color patrons, but the restaurant is quite large with many different areas! we enjoy the bar are as it makes you feel like you're in a different era!

Fun little spot downstairs that has an outside option that was already fully reserved, but also several tables along a small bar in a narrow underground-vibe restaurant. Smaller, upscale menu and daily specials including local wine selections that were truly great including dry options (rarity for this part of the country). Our table shared a crabcake appetizer (we knew there were only 2 as noted by our server), a halibut entrée and three duck breast entrees prepared with an Asian flair including a cold slaw that seemed unexpected but overall went over well. The kind of place where there is not salt or pepper on the table but none of us felt the need anyways. Attentive service from staff who are clearly patient with each other needing to navigate the narrow access back-and-forth from the storage/prep/kitchen area to service including outside. Honestly the only thing that would have been better is if they had not permitted a couple to stand near the bar after it was full and block the only walking path causing staff to need to weave between all the tables. Would definitely recommend if in the area!

Oh how I wish this place would have been better. It's a…read morecute place and our server did a great job overall. Those are the highlights. My friend ordered the kabob dinner and said it was good...but over $20 for some veggies is crazy. My gyro and truffle fries....honestly I should have just sent them back. This is one of the most disappointing meals I've had recently. They put a tomato paste on it that I almost requested without, but trusted it would be interesting. It literally tasted like cheap canned tomato paste. Gross and certainly doesn't blend well on a gyro. The lamb meat itself had a decent taste, but the way it is served makes it difficult to eat in a pita. Gyros are typically chopped or shaved lamb which makes it easier to eat and helps ensure you're getting more lamb per bite. Served in these strips, it was just falling apart and not blending with the feta. The fries...terrible. Just terrible. $6 to sub truffle fries which seems like too much but I hadn't had them in a long time so had to go for it. Listed in subs it simply says truffle fries, so I didn't know they were going to be covered in liquid cheese. They ARE listed in appetizers with the full description but I didn't look there until after bc I didn't order an appetizer. The cheese was awful, completely overwhelmed the TINY bit of truffle taste, and SO salty! Take a look at the picture and decide for yourself if the gyro and fries is worth $23. I eat a lot of gyros, and this being the most expensive one I've had is the worst. Heads up that they charge a service fee. Doesn't bother me as I always tip at least 20% but no one pointed that out and I'm not really sure what it's for. Does that go into the servers pocket or? Won't be going back to find out.

This was not simply a disappointing dining experience--it was a clear example of how a lack of…read moreservice standards, compounded by an even more concerning management response, can undermine an otherwise capable establishment. To start with what was done well: the food was very good, and my request for a table with a view was honored. The kitchen is evidently not the issue. The service, however, was unacceptable. I would rate it a 0 out of 10 without hesitation. Our server, Maddison, did not introduce herself, did not offer recommendations, and made no attempt to guide or elevate the experience. The only initial interaction was, "What can I get for you?"--and that tone carried throughout the evening. There was no presence, no attentiveness, and no effort to deliver even baseline hospitality. We were seated, served, and effectively ignored. On multiple occasions, our server made direct eye contact with our table and chose not to approach. That is not a subtle oversight--it is a visible lapse in service. There is a clear distinction between giving space and neglecting guests, and this fell firmly into the latter. I also ordered a non-alcoholic Bloody Mary. While pricing is understood and not in question, the value of the overall experience did not come close to justifying what was charged--because service is a fundamental part of that value. What is most telling, however, is what happened next. Rather than immediately posting publicly, I extended the professional courtesy of addressing this privately with management. My message was clear, measured, and rooted in industry understanding. I explicitly stated that my concern was service--not pricing, not food quality. The response I received was defensive from the outset. I was told the server is "introverted," "passive," and new. That may explain behavior, but it does not excuse it. Guests are not there to adapt to staff limitations; the business is responsible for maintaining standards regardless of who is on the floor. I was then told my experience was a matter of "interpretation," as though repeated lack of engagement and visible neglect are subjective rather than observable. This kind of deflection speaks volumes. Most concerning was the claim that my message was "blackmail-ish," implying I was attempting to leverage a complaint for compensation. This is categorically false. At no point did I make a demand. Referencing potential resolutions is standard practice in hospitality--not a threat. Choosing to handle concerns privately before going public is professionalism, not coercion. That distinction was either misunderstood or intentionally misrepresented. The final response made it clear that management "disagrees," considers the matter closed, and believes the complaint to be without merit. I was also asked to cease communication. At that point, the issue was no longer just poor service--it was a complete breakdown in accountability. This is not a question of opinion versus opinion. It is a question of whether fundamental service standards are being upheld, and whether guest feedback is taken seriously when it is delivered respectfully and in good faith. The food may bring guests in, but service--and how a business responds when it falls short--is what determines whether they return. In this case, both failed.

Well I couldn't get a reservation in the fall so my girlfriend and I tried again while taking a ski trip to Boyne Mountain . Yes, The location and ambiance is fabulous . We were graciously greeted and sat at table # 1 right by the windows looking out to the frozen lake truly a great table. Our waitress Janice a local greeted us and was very nice. Janice did a great job going through the menu which I will added the prices were very fare . The wine and cocktail list were also impressive with a wide offering in price and choice. We decided on a Malbec to start. Then they brought out a the welcoming taste of salmon pate on a cucumber which we both found to be very tasty . After reviewing the menu we chose to bypass an appetizer for fear of just getting too much food and not finishing our dinner . After I told my girlfriend how good whitefish is in Michigan we both ordered that instead of the salmon or short ribs that also looked enticing. . Before our entree was served we had the warm bread and garlic butter that was terrific and tempting to eat the whole basket . Our dinners were served very quickly even though the restaurant was sold out . As we took the first bites of the white fish I was extremely disappointed . The breading had absolutely zero seasoning or flavor . The fish was flaky and cooked perfectly but the breading was completely flavorless taking away from the fish. Neither of us finished the dish and my girlfriend tried adding salt just to get some flavor but it didn't make it any better . I was going to order dessert but we were so disappointed after our dinner we chose to bypass dessert . . I did order a coffee since they didn't have cappuccino. I will say the coffee was very good , but what good restaurant doesn't have a cappuccino machine . As a side note the bathroom very nicely decorated in old wine box shingles on the wall and was very clean . I gave 3 stars simply because the Walloon Inn has been around so long and highly acclaimed as one of the better restaurants in the area. This was very disappointing . I may come back with my business partner and hope my experience will be better . Until next time .

My wife wanted a Chardonnay but was unfamiliar with one of them and asked for a taste. Seriously? What bartender sends a taste of wine in a shot glass with literally a quarter of that shot glass holding a "taste?" My wife had no idea what this wine was supposed to taste like so ordered a glass of Decoy, which was decent but quite overpriced. I ordered a Bellaire Brown out of the can which was cold & non-ruinable, thank God! We ordered a pizza with pepperoni, which used to be quite good here. Not anymore. As hard as it was to believe, in 8 slices there were NINE pieces of pepperoni. Total. We wondered if the kitchen was instructed to only use one piece per slice & maybe an extra one got slipped in by mistake. The pizza was undercooked, crust was tasteless, cheese bland, and sauce was not close to Italian. Maybe Contadina with a little oregano thrown into it. If you're a fan of Red Baron or other frozen pizza, stick to that because it's better. The best part of the pizza was the red pepper flakes we buried it with. I don't know if the new owners are cheap, unaware of why this place was once popular and populated, but we shan't be back soon.
