Yes, I know it's now the new year and many are focused on getting the holiday tree DOWN but--word--you should bookmark this company for 2010's holiday season. This is the first holiday in a long time that I felt motivated to put up a holiday tree. Usually, by the time it takes me to agonize over plastic trees that may leak toxins in a landfill someday versus buying a real one from a big box retailer that isn't a good community partner, the holiday is generally long over before I've made a decision. (Plus, as you might imagine, this overwrought thought process usually strips the fun right out of it.) This year, I'd read about City Tree Delivery on Apartment Therapy and decided to peruse their web site. ~gulp~ These were not Home Depot prices...but...maybe they shouldn't be. After the sticker shock wore off, I considered the benefits of not only buying a tree from a place "dedicated to sustainability" but also having someone else to do the schlepping for me. But would they deliver to the South Side? The delivery desert? Their web site indicated that I was out of their normal boundaries. I sent an e-mail expecting to have to wait a while for a response. I received an e-mail immediately from their VP, Jeffrey. Yes, they would delivery to my hood! And they could do it immediately! Sold! Chris, the CEO and Founder, made the delivery himself. While bringing the tree in and setting it up in the stand, he happened to take a pretty big slice out of his hand. Yikes! While we bandaged him up, there was an opportunity to chat about his company philosophy and history. A pretty impressive story (which you can read more about on their web site, which explains it better than I might be able to here). They will even offer to pick up your tree post-holiday and turn it into mulch for you. How's that for eco-friendly and ultra easy tree disposal? (Yes, there's a price tag involved, though.) Excellent service. Painless, affordable way to have a gorgeous tree magically appear in your living room. We got a six-foot tree that stayed beautiful and fresh for the whole month. Now that it's New Year's Day, I'm not ready to let it go! What a great idea! People who deliver Christmas trees...love it. Two guys came over and delivered a tree with some lights and it's a beautiful tree! The tree smells so great. The guy was telling me that they get their trees in Michigan and then keep them in a warehouse here. My roommate had originally ordered colored lights but decided he really wanted the white ones and the guys were great they went out to their car and got the white ones! Very accommodating and professional. They cleaned up the entire time they were doing it. This is one of those awesome business ideas I really wish that I would have thought of first. read more

This year was our first time using City Tree Delivery - actually, our first time getting a real Christmas tree. It was nice not having to haul the fake one out of storage. It was super simple - 2 guys came to my apartment with the tree and set it up with a stand (they also watered it and reminded me to keep the tree watered). And that was it! They're also coming back to pick it up after the new year - it definitely makes my life a whole lot easier, and lets us focus on decorations and getting our dog to stop eating the ornaments.. a 4 ft - 5 ft tree is $60.00. I think this is outrageous. Who are these lots for? Not the people in the neighborhood who don't have huge budgets. I find it ridiculous that it would cost so much for a small tree. I was told they were comparable. Do some exploring before you buy here. I have used both the delivery and pick up services for two years. The service is impeccable. The delivery guys are great! I had one of the same guys deliver both years. He and his partner put the tree up and cleaned everything up in less than 30 minutes. The guys that did the pick up did the same thing. The quality of the trees are awesome too!! I normally don't take delivery until mid December and my trees have looked great and lasted through the new year. I couldn't be happier with the service and the quality. I actually used the new North Center location at 4100 N Damen. Couple kids working out of a small camper with saws & twine, they "Had a run on trees" they said but I still managed to find a Beaut! Five stars for delivery and set-up. Absolutely wonderful and they for me in last minute for Thanksgiving! The customer service from Chris was wonderful! Four-ish stars for the tree itself (wouldn't have been the one I picked if I went to a lot but was still a very nice tree). However the in-home pickup service is not worth the cost and was very disappointing. I just had my tree picked up and while the guys who did the job were friendly and quick they didn't even remotely try to pickup the left over needles caused by taking down the tree and carrying it out. I never expected to have someone vacuum up every last needle but expected a lot more than what was left for the cost. I didn't even realize how bad it was until after they left because after I noted that they forgot their tree stand (which I rented) they had me go outside to pour out the remaining water myself - came back in to see my front entryway and the area where the tree had been with needles everywhere. Pictures shown. I expected a lot more for the decent amount they charge for an in home pickup. At the very least I would have dragged the tree to the curb myself and saved the extra cost for in home pickup if I knew they were pretty much going to do nothing for cleanup. I had my tree removed by Ivy's last gear and for a very comparable cost they did a significantly better job and left my home fairly clean and certainly didn't leave a trail of needles in their wake! I really hope that City Tree can get this fixed for next year as I'd like to use them again but definitely won't be if the removal service isn't addressed. read more

I will never go to another Christmas tree lot, at least as long as I live in Chicago. Frankly, I just didn't have time or energy to go shopping for a tree, and I didn't want to mess with putting it on top of the car, schlepping it into the building, etc. -- never mind having a schlep it out again dripping needles every step of the way. I paid for a 7 foot tree, and got one at least 8 feet tall, delivered and set up by two cute boys. What could be better? And when I was ready, they came and took it away, sweeping up the needles as they went. Yes, I have to run the vacuum cleaner for 5 minutes to get the last of the needles off the rug, but over all it worked great. I was hesitant about ordering a tree sight unseen, but could not have been more pleased; great shape, height everything. Nope it's not cheap, but if you can afford it, it's worthwhile! read more

Two weeks later, a different sweet, efficient pair returned to remove tree, again sweeping up. They provided 2 hour window each time and called or texted when near. A perfect service start to finish. Best decision I've made all day!! I've been stressing out, with less than 10 days left to get shopping done and put a Christmas tree up all while working Legit every single day! My husband was a little hesitant, but from the moment I spoke to Chris I was instantly calm. Within a few days of contacting City Tree Delivery, I had a beautiful tree without the hassle of driving to a tree lot, loading it on top of my car, lugging it up the stairs and situating it in a stand. We used City Tree for the first time this year. Online ordering was easy and delivery communication was very good. The delivery team was nice, efficient, put the tree in the stand (an extra $20) and added water. The tree shape is perfect and the height is as ordered. My only concerns are that the tree has seemed very dry since day one. It had been dropping needles like crazy and feels brittle after one week. Obviously, we keep it watered and we don't have it over a vent. I hope it makes it to Christmas. My other problem is that the branches (especially lower ones) are very flimsy. They can't hold my larger ornaments. My prior 7-8' trees have always had a few sturdier branches towards the bottom for my heavier ornaments but this tree doesn't have any. If I had picked it out in person, I would not have picked this one. It arrived in netting and the branches didn't drop for several hours so this issue was not initially apparent. For $170 including tax and set up in the stand, I am not thrilled with the tree. I've had worse and, as stated, the shape is great. I would use City Tree again since I've heard tree quality overall is lower this year, so perhaps the situation is beyond their control. I think next time I will visit the lot to pick out my own tree, however. read more
