Been using city trees for quite a few years now and the last time we used them in February 2021, they did not get back to me right way initially,but I pursued and they finally returned my call. This I filled out a work order and got no response. Then I called over a week later and left a phone message and no return call. I happened to talk to my neighbors to get a referral since they just had their property trimmed and when I mentioned City Trees they had a bad experience last year where they flaked on them. I will be using their referral as they were very pleased with the response and the work that was done. This company is very unprofessional so I would avoid them. read more

We live in SF and have 2 huge elm trees in our back yard that had become Very overgrown and dangerous. We got several estimates and went with City Trees because our home's co-owners has used them before and the estimate was very reasonable. I was Nervous because I'd spent considerable time and money creating a beautiful garden and I couldn't imagine how they could remove so much from so high up without doing a lot of damage. Here's how: they know their stuff! There was debris in our yard and two of our neighbors but they cleaned everything up and there was hardy a broken branch. This was a tough and dangerous job, but they did it very efficiently with all the needed COVID safeguards. I highly recommend them. read more

City Trees was recommended from FUF Friends of the Urban Forest) -since I've volunteered for FUF, totally trust their recommendation. We had Frank/City Trees come out and prune our med size maple tree. We had gotten 4 other quotes, and City Trees was the most reasonable. They just pruned our tree so I can only review the first phase - so far, it looks good - they were quick, and seemed to know what they were doing. On the advice of our landscape designer, we hired this service to remove three trees, and prune another. They said our garage door was too small to allow them to bring in a stump grinder. When my husband called around and found a grinder that would easily fit through our garage, they told him not to bother renting it, that they would remove the stumps with brute force and hand tools. Not surprisingly, they were unable to get one of the stumps out by hand (duh, it's an 80-year-old tree) and after two days of lamely hacking at it, they basically just threw up their hands, left, and sent us the bill for the work that they'd finished. read more

Alex gave good advice on trees and might have done a very good trimming job, however I ended up pulling out before signing a contract due to inadequate insurance coverage. Alex said he had liability and workers compensation insurance, but it turns out he hires tree trimmers as independent contractors, so workers compensation does not apply. When evidence of workers compensation insurance did not arrive, I followed up and Alex mentioned the independent contractor status. He said he could maybe put together the equivalent of workers compensation insurance for an extra fee. This would have been nice to know in the beginning. As for liability insurance, it took a couple days for the insurance company to provide evidence of what appeared to be a customized policy for the job; at least I would be covered without an extra fee. It might be cheaper for a business owner to hire gig workers, but a homeowner proceeding with a job without adequate insurance coverage is incurring unnecessary risk. read more

These guys were fabulous! Jim came out and listened carefully to what I wanted him to do in our very over-grown back yard. He wore a mask and was careful about distancing...and also made a few excellent suggestions. City Trees promptly sent me an estimate and were very easy to make a date to come over and work. Alex the owner and the work crew arrived on time-all wearing masks--and we again walked through all that they were going to do. The group was focused, polite, and cleaned up all the debris, including a thorough final sweep! I have a very tall tree (40-50 ft?), over 3 stories tall, and City Trees suggested I talk to Sam Massey at Silverback about that tree. I did, and had a great experience. Sam was great about giving me an estimate. We booked the deal. He's brief in his communication, but clear. He was on time, got started immediately, and did a beautiful job. Cleaned up after his crew, made sure our neighbors were happy. Billed me via invoice. Was a total pleasure to work with. I suspect that caring for trees is a labor of love for Frank, and that he might do it for free if there weren't a demand for his services at City Trees. I hope he gets plenty of customers, but hope even more than he unscrupulous customers steer clear of him. He is _such_ a nice man. It would be a shame to see him taken advantage of. I consulted Frank to remove and replace an ailing tree in my front yard. He visited my home to look at the site and chatted with me about trees for nearly an hour on the phone before the sale. When I briefly considered a palm, he cheerfully offered recommendations for companies that would have sold and installed a palm for me without employing him. He didn't seem to mind spending so much time with me, even with no definite sale in sight. When the tree planting date came, he made a special point of tucking the sickly tree away in his truck. He told me that he would try on his own to rejuvenate it later. I'll bet he spent twice as much free time trying to bring that near-death tree back to life as he spent at my place! read more

These guys were great. We had an overgrown (street) ficus tree that had been neglected for years by the previous owners. We also needed an old stump ground out of the sidewalk. It was simple to make an appointment. They came when they said they would. They did the job very well - everyone in our 4 unit place was amazed the tree trim looked so good. And they didn't charge much ($450). We are also having them come back to plant a tree in the space where they ground out the stump. Also a reasonable price. Frank and Co. are great. City Trees was very highly referred to me by a tree expert. I have four very large trees that hadn't been pruned in many years. I recently had someone else trim a couple of small trees that I wasn't happy with the outcome. Well - City Trees outdid themselves. The trees look wonderful and exceeded my expectations. They took some height off and thinned them out alot and they did it in such a way that they are still very pleasing to the eye. Outstanding job. Priced fairly. Had a great experience with them. We had a tree that desperately needed trimming and came out and assessed the tree a day after we contacted them. The price was good and the tree was trimmed a week and a half later. The best part was that this was all done by phone and I wouldn't have even met him except for the fact that I was home sick the day he came. SO I had this overgrown back yard which needed a lot of pruning, trimming, and good old fashioned chain sawing. On the suggestion of a neighbor, I called Frank and he came by to give me an estimate. Part of the Job would entail getting up over twenty feet off the ground into a tree with a chainsaw. Well, Frank gave me a decent estimate and we made an appointment that he arrived right on time for with his partner Josh, who in addition to using ropes to get up the twenty or so feet with the chainsaw (total stud), speaks three languages (English, Spanish, and amazingly Japanese). These guys got to work and did a fantastic job. I helped throughout the three hour process which made things go quickly. At the end Frank actualy asked for LESS money than he had quoted!! I had a big tree problem in my small SF back yard -- half of a 50' tall Italian Stone pine collapsed onto my neighbors fence. I talked to three different tree companies about my street tree removal and stump grinding project, and was amazed how widely the bids differed - just from different contractors standing outside my house looking at the exact same tree. Frank Fredericks not only came in with the lowest of the three bids - he also knew the most about City requirements, the removal permit, City curb construction, sidewalk requirements, and many other aspects of my whole project. He and my sidewalk contractor coordinated well on timing, my tree's gone, my stump's ground, and my final bill was $100 less than the original quote! I think the old tree and stump grindings got mulched//recycled too. The stump grinder guy was apparently a sub to City Trees, but I couldn't tell - it went off without a hitch.
