Got a pile of mulch through them from chip drop and it smells like a landfill. Was told it was cedar but it is a mix of different things including some kind of palm. They could have said it was half rotten and decomposing but they acted like it was fine before the delivery. Update: Had someone come over a few days later to move mulch into our backyard and he ended up getting very sick. read more

Over the 50+ years that we've enjoyed our 100-year-old redwood tree, high winds during recurrent storms broke many large branches, and the tree became very top-heavy -- posing a danger should the top fifth of the tall tree be snapped off during a high-wind storm. Moreover, the tree was no longer looking attractive. We wondered if it was time to have it removed. Arborist Kevin Johnson evaluated our redwood, noting that it was still very healthy, and could be professionally pruned by his team. His team was super quick and efficient and took care to help clear out branches in our neighbors yards as well (you can only imagine how many limbs a 60ft tree would have). Johnson's Tree Care did a great job trimming an enormous ash tree in front of my house (a City-owned tree by the street-side). I had a different company come in before Johnson's Tree Care to do the work and they charged me what I thought was a good price but only trimmed the lower branches of the tree and hardly got anything towards the top of the tree. Plus, there were still lots of noticeably dead branches. They had only one worker and one supervisor doing the job. Frustrated that they wanted to charge me extra to finish the job, I looked for a different company and found Johnson's Tree Care. Johnson's was friendly and responsive and offered me a great price, given my current predicament. In contrast to the first company, Johnson's had a crew of three guys plus a project supervisor. They were able to finish the job in about an hour and took care of the upper tree limbs that had previously gone unaddressed. WOW! Impressive work by Johnson's crew! I was astonished at how much 3 men could get done in ONE DAY! I had 4 estimates for our job. Johnson's was 2nd to lowest. 2 bids were OVER TWICE AS MUCH! Robert was fantastic to work with. He's the sales manager and gives the estimates. VERY thorough. I liked how he used a powerful laser pointer to point out EXACTLY what needs to be done. The crew showed up perfectly on time, ready to work their behinds OFF! This was Walter, Benjamin and Lucio. They were super respectful, and responsive. They pulled some CRAZY monster vines out of our redwood and other trees (waaaaaaaaaaay up high), trimmed our pines and other trees and cleaned up wonderfully. At the point they thought they were done, I noticed some dead branches and twigs in several trees. When I called Robert, he said, "we want you to be happy, just ask the guys to do what you want." So I did ask them, and they spent another hour doing it. I was relieved and grateful that there was no going back and forth. They did it, cleaned it up with a smile and fantastic attitude. They did a great job for us- removing a dying 50 year old pine and trimming trees away from the house. The pine tree was in a planting bed close to a fence and they directed the falling wood to avoid damage. Guys showed up on time, worked with care to avoid damage around the work. We had an emergency tree care issue, a limb that was 20' long an 2' in diameter, broke on our old pine. The limb was hanging over the sidewalk and if it fell, could have easily hurt or killed a passerby. To make matters worse, it was 9:00 pm on the Friday night of a 3 day weekend. I called several arborists but even the "24 hour emergency" arborists were not answering. When I called Johnson's I was routed to Scott's personal cell phone. He was out having dinner with his family and after hearing about my situation he left dinner, got in the car and drove to me house. He called his crew and by 10:30 my branch was removed, cut into pieces and stacked neatly by the curb for pick up. We had Johnson's cut down some trees for us. They did a great job cutting down the trees, grinding stumps and scattered the wood chips around the yard afterwards. Strong attention to detail as the clean-up was also excellent including sweeping debris off the roof which we didn't necessarily expect would get done. Also, the customer service from Robert was excellent. There was an accident where a flying piece of wood from the job cracked one of our windows - Robert was very understanding and took the initiative to order a replacement piece of glass for it, arrange for installation and covered the cost. The 2 stars are for tree removal. They did a great job removing 2 large palm trees. The rest of the tree maintenance they did was awful and deserves 0 stars. They removed a large branch from a beautiful mature tree immediately after my husband explicitly said not to remove it. There was no supervisor on site and, although they responded promptly with Scott Johnson coming out to our house, the damage was done. They then were supposed to thin out some mature redwoods. They just cut off all the lower branches in the back side of the trees and left obviously dead branches on the tree that I explicitly requested be removed. Dead branches are still hanging off my tree since we can reach them. So, for tree removal fine. For tree care find someone who know what they're doing before your beautiful mature trees are destroyed. I'm now having someone else come out to try to salvage what's left. read more

I ended up hiring Johnson's Tree Care from San Jose.I was impressed that Kevin Johnson, the owner , is a certified arborist and that he has worked with his team of 4 men for 14 years. He gave me a very reasonable price for the work , was right on time for the date of the scheduled work and left the yard in immaculate condition. ( Not a pine needle was left to clean up. ) The men wore hard hats, had all of the appropriate gear and were professional at all times.
