The only downside is that it can take awhile on hold on the phone to get an appointment time. This is a very nice branch of the library. After visiting a number of the other branches, I feel lucky to have such a large branch close to my home. My toddler really enjoys the kids play area. This branch also offers a lot of different programs through the week for children and older adults. I haven't been to any of these, I cannot comment on the quality.

The kids area was amazing with books at his level, interactive play structures with a beautiful and fun nature theme. The reading nook was adorable and there were even a few toys out. We visited in the evening so it wasn't crowded but a mom and her son came to the area and told me on Tuesday's they had story time! We will be coming back for that next! The staff were very helpful and sweet as well. So grateful this is so close to us and we will be back so many times!

It's been about 10 years since I last visited the Midland Library, and wow--what a difference. I…read moreknew they remodeled a few years back, but I finally had the chance to come in today, and it honestly feels like a brand-new space. The library feels so much more spacious than before. I really love the natural light coming through the windows, and the paintings and decorations throughout the building make the whole place feel calming and welcoming. It's the kind of environment that makes you want to slow down and stay awhile. They also have several conference rooms, ranging from larger rooms to smaller ones, which is great for meetings or quiet study time. On top of that, there's a dedicated kids' area where children can read, play, and just enjoy being in a space designed for them. Overall, this is an easy 5/5. An excellent place to bring your kids, read some books, or just enjoy a peaceful, well-designed library. I'm really glad I came back.

I received my new card at the tiny NE location next to Whole Foods, just off 15th and Fremont. As this is the closest location to my neighborhood, I was happy to learn that I could select all of my desired my items online and have them shipped and held for pick up at my convenient NE location. Back when I lived in SE, the online services were not as extensive, so I kinda didn't use my card as much as I should have back then, I just bought 'em at the bookstore. I am a true book lover and I have an entire room in my house filled with various books, but given the current state of the economy, I am feeling less frivolous. I would much rather get a taste for a book by borrowing it from the library, than immediately running out and buying it, only to discover that I may not want to read it again. On my most recent trip to the library, I not only got a great novel, but an audio book for my daily commute, as well as cookbooks and gardening books. Even the selection at my tiny local branch was very good. The downtown library is really amazing. Not only for it's vast selection, but because it has that lovely historic library feel. The folks who work at the various Multnomah County Libraries vary in the levels of customer service they choose to provide. When I got my replacement card, the librarian who assisted me was outstanding. Super friendly and cheerful. Her counterpart on a different day, however, was rather stone-faced and generally rather uptight. In general, the library system here is well-organized and I am amazed at the selection of current titles in all of the sections. I am very pleased overall with my newly acquired replacement card.

It is large, two stories, with plenty of casual seating, coffee tables handy, and shared tables with chairs. The opening was filled with families and the library has unique facilities worth traveling to from any Multnomah County branch library neighborhood. It is on the MAX light rail, the Division rapid bus, and is by City Hall, and an upscale strip mall. They have check-out laptops - Windows and Chromebooks, and the regular library computers. There is an auditorium holding 200, plus large and small meeting rooms. They have a large area for small children with a structure for crawling and climbing. They have a large maker space with 3d printing, laser engraving, printing pictures on shirts, sewing, vinyl stencils, and a lot of arts and crafts children may enjoy. What drew me is their professional music recording studio. I have never seen this in any library. They have 2 small rooms for musicians and microphones, the larger making an attempt at acoustically absorbing. They are by the small control room. There, the recording core is a 16 channel API console coupled to ProTools by top-ranked United Audio converters. I worked for years professionally on API consoles. API is an American company and highly respected. They have made wise choices on the analog outboard gear. I think the outboard gear is all/almost all American. The classic 1176s are on the way. They have an array of plugins for ProTools to supplement the analog outboard processors. They chose Barefoot monitor speakers, made in Portland, and respected. I'm interested to see how this recording program evolves, hopefully in collaboration with K-12 schools, Mt Hood Community College, Rock and Roll Camp for girls, Ethos, and Bodecker. Architecturally, the firm was Holst, they spent the budget on a grand circular staircase in the middle of the building. It is narrow, about 2 people wide. As a nice touch, there are lower children and higher adult hand railings. They went wild on glulam inside. Not sure how that is going to work outside by the main entrance, water is the enemy of glulam. There are elevators. It seems the rest of the stairs are for emergency use only. The East Multnomah County library can be a magnet for families, children reading, learning, and making. It can be a great resource for the neighboring K-12 districts too. And parents, even small children, can benefit from being read to and experiencing books. The Multnomah County East County Library is a beautiful and unique facility. It has the potential to become the East County family living room where everyone can learn and make.
