Our Lennox gas fireplace has been acting funny it goes off and on on its own. We have never serviced the fireplace in over 10 years. I found Clappers and read all the great reviews about Robb. He returned my call promptly and scheduled the appointment. Robb was on time for our appointment. He cleaned the parts, cleaned the glass and painted the top that was peeling due to the heat. He said it must not have been treated with heat tolerant paint. He made sure all the rocks were set properly and added additional embers...It looks beautiful and brand new. I cannot say enough good things about Rob and his expertise and attitude. We had been chasing a fireplace repair for almost two years (a plumber offered a diagnosis, which was wrong), and Rob responded to my query immediately and connected with my son who lives in the property where the fireplace issue was. Rob was not only so competent but also exceedingly honest when he discovered that an existing part merely needed tightening, so we didn't have to purchase an elusive part for our Lennox gas fireplace. Clappers installed a Mendota insert in our house few years ago. I called for service, and also to fix the freezing draft coming through in the winter (front of fireplace literally frost when sub zero outside). He did not show up. Thanks pal for costing me a half day of vacation. Called again and he said he did not make it because he lost my cell #. Scheduled a 2nd appointment. And again he never showed up. Funny now that I think of it, how he pretended to double check my cell and write things down in his calendar and all that BS. Yes, he is that kind of person. Very much like another reviewer, I found out that having service done on a fireplace by another store is "not a thing" in Mass. I called En-R-Gy, Commonwealth fireplace and Natick Fireplace: "No Sir, we don't touch someone else fireplace". What is this, the 1970s NY arbor crew? OK, so what do I do now? I emailed Mendota (no phone number) describing all this, and they send me an email referring me to Commonwealth. So, they don't care either. If you buy a fireplace from this store, just know that when this guy leave your house with the check, its the last time you will see him. And you will have to learn how to clean up the valve and adjust the pilot lamp, because apparently free market does not apply to the fireplace business, for some obscure reasons. DL read more

Amazing service! We needed our gas fireplace repaired, and after a different shop in town went silent on us, I contacted Clapper's. Rob was able to come out within a few days and fix our issue quickly. Besides being efficient, he's also a really nice guy. I was having trouble finding our fireplace remote, but holding a newborn so I couldn't dig through boxes. Robb is incredible! He installed a new gas insert for me in an old condo in Brookline. He was able to order me a custom surround to make the dimensions work with permitting requirements and work with my plumber who installed the gas line to make sure everything was done properly. Been meaning to write this review for a while. I'd highly recommend Robb and Clapper's for your fireplace. I started out getting estimates from a couple other places and I wasn't overly impressed. The other companies wanted me to take all the measurements myself and didn't have any real knowledge about the efficiency of the units they sold. Robb (from Clapper's), on the other hand, came out a couple days after calling to take measurements and answer all my questions. He was friendly and knowledgeable about efficiency and helped me decide on a Mendota. The installation went smoothly considering all the delays that many other companies are having. Robb has serviced our gas fireplaces in two different homes. Our first fireplace, a Mendota, would constantly die after a few minutes of operation. The original dealer was unable to fix it, and it remained a mystery for a year until we found Robb. He quickly diagnosed the problem, and then re-designed the chimney components to fix it. Our new home came with a Majestic brand fireplace. Though it's not a brand he normally supports, we didn't want to work with anyone else, and he has done a great job with maintenance and repairs. We started our search asking people in our community who had a new fireplace insert installed. Were they happy with the product, vendor and service? Sadly nobody replied with an overwhelming endorsement. So we expanded our search to companies outside our area. That's when I found Clapper's on Yelp. Robb came to our house; we went over the brochures, he measured our fireplace and scheduled the ONE DAY INSTALLATION. On installation day we had the beginnings of a 2-day snow storm. Robb coordinated the plumber, electrician, and high wire acrobat (who climbed to the very top of our chimney). We did not need to subcontract anything. All details were handled by Robb. When our insert kit arrived (short one light bulb), Robb announced he had to go out and get one. We pleaded with him to drop the bulb off on a day he would not be risking life and limb to drive through this snow storm. He returned the following day and completed the job. We are pleased with the product, the service and Robb. Check how cheap I am with giving out a perfect review. He's that good. read more

Robb was super. Very easy to work with, and aims to please. We had an old gas log set in the house we bought. It was inefficient and the remote had been broken for a while. We upgraded to a new Mendota gas fireplace. I am quite picky about the final look of things, and Clappers did not disappoint. A custom made black steel surround was part of the price. Great job. He was knowledgeable, listened to what we wanted, and made excellent design suggestions that all resulted in a very beautiful gas fireplace that is enhancing our living space. We finally decided to convert our wood burning fireplace to a gas fireplace insert.I did as much research as I could but there was not a lot out there that was meaningful. We listed all the places that sold inserts within a 15 mile radius and went to visit them.Some looked good and others not so much. Our last stop was Clappers and boy were we in for a treat. By the time that we left, Robb had answered all of our questions with a casual expert voice.One more day and I researched the Mendota insert line and found it to be the finest available.Robb came to our house for the measurment and again in his casual expert voice gave us some great suggestions including a custome face for the fireplace. Robb did an awesome job on a Valor gas fireplace two years ago. Since then, I've referred him to several friends and two others also got fireplaces through Clappers. We're all incredibly pleased. I live in Cambridge and went to Robb after the two closest fireplace dealers showed zero interest in my business, since they seemed to get plenty of business just by having a nice location. So, I bucked the curve and reached out to Robb in Sudbury. The product is the same product, but the service from Clappers is from another dimension of customer support. He always answers my calls, or calls right back. I've asked him questions throughout the time since I've gotten this fireplace, and he's always responded immediately and never even tried to charge me for the help. But most telling, he's always trying to come back to make a housecall and troubleshoot on the spot. I mean, whenever I ask him a question, he always offers to drive over and help you in person. Really the best service, period. And the fireplace I got from him is as great as he said it would be. I felt compelled to write this review after I just now saw Clappers' mediocre Yelp rating. I just can't stand to see Robb with such a low overall rating. He was one of the last people I dealt with at the end of a massive gut rehab, and among all the vendors, contractors, and sellers I worked with, he's one of the best, hands down. read more

I found Robb through a contractor who did a lot of work in my home. I'd gone to a few showrooms and made a few more calls before reaching out to my contractor for a recommendation. I was frankly scared by the lack of knowledge of people selling these things. Not ONE asked me for the dimensions of the room I was looking to install in, and given that it was a small room with very low ceilings, I was nervous about installing a large unit.. When I called Robb he had a job a few towns away the next Saturday and offered to stop by after. Very impressed. None of the others would come to my house until after I made a decision. Robb provided great service and I've been very pleased with the product. Two things, I wound up using my own plumber who is certified to do gas work and I highly recommend you get someone you trust to do that. When I expressed my concern about gas explosions, he told me most of the problem come from the way people install it and materials used. Second thing is that everyone else I spoke to recommended an electric component to circulate the hot air - no question. Robb told me my room was so small he didn't feel I needed it. I don't.
