I have been eating at Clare and Carls since the 40's and something is very off there now. The service was very slow, the onions rings were different, they had no chocolate milk, the Michigan sauce was bland, my husband's hamburger was not good - an overall disappointment. I asked the waitress if there were new owners and her reply was, "it's still owned by the same family." I did notice that there were young girls in the kitchen instead of men like previous years. I'm thinking that the children are now running it. We want the old Clare and Carls back!!!!!! read more

They have been around for over eighty years and in that time, have filled the bellies of generations of people and have also filled their memories. To be in business since 1942 is quite an accomplishment. The community has definitely embraced Clare & Carl's and it is apparent that this humble hot dog stand has become a part of the fabric of the community. Plattsburgh, NY. Stopped on 09/19/2020. I don't know the Plattsburgh NY area well and I was distressed to see that Gus's Restaurant had closed. We had always stopped there for our Michigan dogs. Easy to get to from the ferry Today we've found a nifty and tasty place called Clare & Carl's Hot Dog Stand. Small place, curbside service. Waitresses were very pleasant and friendly. It's an unassuming place that looks like it's sinking into the ground. Lots of cars in the parking lot. I can see why, the Michigan dogs were absolutely delicious! Had onion rings as well, very good! Topped it off with a can of soda. Service was pretty quick considering how many patrons there were the and how many waitstaff they had. (not many). It's obviously well know in the area. Open from the end of March to the beginning of October. No frills, plain and simple excellent food. Appears to be cash only. Waitstaff was very pleasant and efficient. Since we don't live in the area it will be this coming Spring before we get back. We will go back! read more

The building tilts. It's a cash-only dive with limited indoor seating, but lots of outdoor seating, and they were OK with us having a dog that day outside because there was no one else there. This "hotdog stand" is dangerously close to my best friends house, so we made the three minute walk over there. I loved, loved, LOVED eating my two Texas red hots, Michigan-style, in Plattsburgh, New York. What a geographical sandwich. The diced onions were flavorful but mild, and I loved the chewy, steamed fluffy buns and the surprisingly tender hot dogs. I really liked the texture of the meat sauce, it was tender and soft and slow simmered. I might've preferred the sauce a little spicier, but I understand why they would've kept it on the mild side to make it more family-friendly. It was nothing that an extra swirl of extra-spicy mustard couldn't fix. I wasn't that hungry, so I didn't order fries. However, once I started chowing down on those delectable dogs it took me no time to finish both of them. Did I mention, they are only $2.10 a piece? It is a good thing that this hot dog stand is not anywhere close to where I live, I could probably eat those things at least once a week! What's funny is, in Cincinnati they have coneys, but I do not like Cincinnati style chili. My dad grew up in Plattsburgh and always talked about coming here with his mom when he was a child. Growing up he always made them for my siblings, him and I recently visited and we had to stop! It is a dying little dive. The building is falling and leaning. The food average. The service is marginal. I usually promote small business and historic business even more. This place is unfortunately a shadow of its former self. The employees are rude, unfriendly, and cold. I am from west Texas visiting the area promoting small business and historical sites. I thought this place being a historical site would be more positive. It was not. I had my order to go which took longer than expected. As I sat there looking around taking photos and wondering about an angle on how to do a video to promote a historic small business, I sat next to my family member at the counter. I was by the cashier, a woman must have been in her 40s thinking she is 10 yrs younger, she was writing checks infront of us on the counter right infront of us, she kept babbling about how an employee was late 10 mins etc... and joking then she couldn't figure out what date it was when she was scribbling those checks. It was may 31st, she kept asking "Hey guys whats the date today" we both answered its the 31st before other employees even figured it out. She didn't even look at us, or said a thing, she continued talking looking down at her scribbles continuing to ignore us as we were at the counter she was there for more than 10 minutes and not once looked up or smiled or said anything. One of the true tastes of summer. Clare & Carl's has another location by the marina, but it's just not the same. You've got to go to the ramshackle original with the horseshoe counter, the picnic area, the outhouse washrooms, and the car service. It's worth going for the neon sign alone. We've tried all the major Michigans outfits in Plattsburgh, and C & C is by far and away our favorite, for the ambiance and for their Michigans. Get 'em with the onions "buried" and don't shy away from the mustard. If you go to this "stand" which you do indeed have to stand at (no wheelchair patrons allowed), be sure it is Carl making your hot dog and not Clare.
