Best old school breakfast in a long time. The restaurant is tucked away, and seems like a local favorite more than a beaten-path kind of place. That said, we got there just before a rush of customers, and we were glad we did because it filled up pretty quickly. The service was super-friendly, highly responsive, and pretty quick. We ordered combo #2 and, I think, #13 (the one with avoocado toast). Both were excellent. Key point: the home fries are old school diner home fries which you can get with onions and peppers - fantastic! We sat in the front area, near a wood stove, which felt log cabin like. I didn't notice the decor much because the food was so good and the service so efficient. We ate there at the start of a long drive, and they comfortably got us in and out in good time. Just spent my birthday here last week and it was amazing! They serve breakfast all day and are open from 7-2 pm. It's almost always crowded and busy with locals but the food speaks for itself. Loved the Chicken and waffles with the sausage gravy- classic perfection. Loved the ambiance and atmosphere of this place, felt like home and loved the wooden interior. Outstanding! Passing through on the way to Vermont. Used Yelp to pick a breakfast spot. Luckily, the first place I picked was closed, even though their Yelp page said the were open. Hungry Bear was actually my second choice, but I'm glad it's where I ended up. It was an absolutely perfect breakfast! So many great choices on the easy to read menu. Unfortunately, my experience at this Diner was marred by overt racism. Despite being the only person of color in the establishment, I was blatantly ignored by all three waitresses. They actively avoided eye contact and refused to assist me, while promptly attending to white patrons who arrived after me. Even when I tried to get their attention, they positioned themselves in a way that made it clear they had no intention of serving me. This kind of discrimination has no place in any establishment, and it's disappointing that this diner failed to uphold basic standards of inclusivity and respect. Friendly out of the way place where locals eat. We came here because the previous reviews had positive experiences here so why not. Only given breakfast menus although got there at noon. So breakfast it is. Got sausage gravy with biscuits and 2 eggs. Daughter had 2 eggs sausage home fries and wheat toast. So food was good and you could tell steady clientele come here but we weren't treated any differently. So it is worth the price to find this little gem. They are open til 3pm. read more

The benefit of Yelp is that it makes you an immediate, local insider. We were driving through Plattsburgh around breakfast time and my friend George navigated us to the Hungry Bear because of the high ratings of fellow Yelpers. We arrived around 10 AM and found the dining area filled with locals. The service was fast and friendly. The coffee was excellent and the cup was bottomless. I had an excellent waffle with a crispy sausage patty, my friend, poached eggs and sausage that he gave a thumbs up. The locals must love the place because there were lots of them inside and there was a shelf with personal coffee cups. Very cool! If I was local, instead of 6 hours south, I would be a regular here. On a Friday morning in mid-September, we had a good breakfast at this charming neighborhood cafe. The place was bright and clean, service was friendly, and the food was well-prepared. My pancake was huge, with plump, fresh blueberries. My husband enjoyed his omelet. By 9 am, every table was full. If you want to eat breakfast here on a Friday, I suggest coming early. meh. Breakfast food was average: not bad, not particularly memorable from a taste standpoint. Bacon was obviously pre-cooked and sitting around for a while before it was served. I worked as a breakfast cook. An elderly person in my party was choking and vomiting at my table and I had to work hard to get anybody from the staff to do something about it. It is not their fault that he was having a health crisis, and he likes their food, but I was very surprised that staff were not more responsive as two of their waitresses walked by our table while he was having this problem. Once alerted, One waitress brought over a bunch of napkins and walked away. They just didn't seem to care that much about their customers in our party's case. Maybe they need to be taught to have empathy for customers and to monitor the dining room better, as well as have enough staff to do that. That is a management responsibility, as waitresses seemed to be insufficiently supported by management to wind up in a situation where they are harried. The two other members of my party say the really like the food at The Hungry Bear. I found it plain and insufficiently seasoned. I had a cheese omelette, Bacon, home fries and toast. read more
