This is the best ophthalmology practice in Claremont and the surrounding area hands down. Staff is wonderful, physicians are caring, conscientious people who despite the challenges facing them in the healthcare system still like what they do! Personally, I see Dr Anil, Dr A as I call him. He has worked with me in monitoring my condition for a few years now and you can't get a better person who happens to be an MD. So knowledgeable, no question is too small or insignificant to ask. Incredibly positive experience! I highly recommend. I genuinely feel so blessed. My little one was practicing writing her letters when suddenly she turned to me and told me she had "a black eye". What followed was a series of test performed by me, a visit to the pediatrician and an instruction by her pediatrician to see an ophthalmologist. This was a very difficult task indeed, I called place after place and no one could get us in or had an ophthalmologist or had someone who worked with kids. I called Claremont eye associates and it said they were closed but if it was urgent I could leave a message with their answering service. 1 hour later they called me back. Amazing from that point on. She told me they had no appointments available but they'd want me to come in right then and they'd squeeze me in if I didn't mind waiting. I got there and besides being confused since the map took me to the back of the office and the front door doesn't look like one, everything was better than expected. The front desk worked quickly and efficiently and was so friendly and patient. There was hustle but also slow down for questions. They moved people in and out flawlessly. They answered my questions about insurance. I saw the person I had talked to on the phone and she was even more friendly and kind in person. They took us back in less time than I've waited somewhere that I DID have an appointment. The nurse was efficient and experienced, professional and kind. My first interaction with the doctor was very brief and made me cry because as soon as he saw my daughters results he told the nurse to dilate her eyes and walked out and I felt confused and overwhelmed and wished someone would tell me what that meant. She was reassuring and patient and we walked to room after room as they completed the exam. When I saw the doctor again, he had all the hustle of everyone else but did show me her optic nerve and the back of her eye and assured me that from an "eye" perspective, she looked great, with the exception that she was very farsighted and one of her eyes was "nearly blind". While we were in there he got a call, and had to multitask. I got the sense that he is good at what he does, and he does it, without any fluff. I appreciate that especially because everyone else is over the top friendly, I'm fine if he's more "all business" especially because he did explain everything very succinctly and answered my questions and even was thoughtful of finances in where he sent me to get her prescription. I don't know what happened to this office. Children now run it. I almost feel sorry for the doctor. They do not care about the elderly. They lied to me about SCAN approving my mother's appointment, which was made back in October. They tried to turn my Mom away, knowing she has pressure behind her eyes and is losing her sight. The doctor performed her cataract surgery. You would think that the precious little dumplings that run the office would care. They do not. I was a longtime patient of this facility, and the doctors seem caring. I just can't take their front office people any more. No matter how much pain I am in, I get offered appointments that are months out. The front office people are rude. They are very young. I even mentioned this to one of the doctors and he said she was a college student, as if that somehow made it okay. What good is a doctor if you cannot get in to see him? I am going elsewhere. Maybe they will upgrade their front office staff before more patients leave. read more

I've been seeing these doctors for a few years, until my most recent visit I was happy with a level of service by the medical staff themselves. However, at my most recent visit, I waited over an hour until I finally canceled the appointment since they were still people ahead of me, it did not seem like I was even close to being seen. Whatever is happening at the office now they clearly have some organizational and system issues and extremely poor customer service and patient wait times. I'm furious that I just wasted almost 2 hours out of a busy workday, between sitting in the waiting room and driving to their office to accomplish literally nothing and will be looking for another doctor. read more

Dr. Sunil has been my doctor for a few years now, diagnosing cataracts a couple of years ago. He told me I could have them removed when they started to bother me. Well, this year I had the surgery to remove them as well as correct my astigmatism. I now have good peripheral vision, very crisp vision from about 5'- horizon, and I no longer need glasses for distance after many decades. I will still require glasses for up-close work but, even without correction, I can see details I never could before without glasses. read more

After over 60 years of wearing eye glasses with high eye pressure and great difficulty driving at night, Dr. Shivaran performed my cataract surgery and also implanted a stent to relieve my eye pressure, I can now see clearly without glasses! Felt very dismissed and disregarded as a patient with my concerns about billing and fees. This was a visit I took just on advice of the allergist due to a few instances of light sensitivity. I was taken to an exam and given a procedure ophthalmoscopy and then taken to a second room with a camera for a fundus photography. I know from going to optometrist that these kinds of imaging are often added on. I asked the technician if this was included in the office visit fee. He said he thought it was; and I asked if he would double check. Technician left and when he came back he told me this imaging is included in the fee of the visit. When Im leaving the doctor I see on the receipt two additional medical codes besides a comprehensive eye exam code. I requested the total estimate of what my fees are and was told they could not find an estimate for my insurance/anthem blue cross. And, this process took an additional half hour in the office. Moreover, an employee informed me that if I had declined the procedures- I would not have been allowed to see the Doctor - a statement I find unethical and coercive. I did inform Dr Shivaram that the assistant told me the procedures were included in the office visit- his explanation was that the assistant is a college student working there. The doctor showed no empathy, no remorse for the mistake or even a sign of emotional response. Best practices include an office giving clients the information regarding optional procedures-noone even explained to me what the procedures were or why. Medical practitioners cannot exploit patients and play off power imbalances. It should be patient's right to consent to additional procedures; if necessary and wanted patient can choose. At other facilities usually a signed consent is done for anything beyond visit fees. read more

Get ready this is going to be long! Set up an appointment for my mother over a month ago. Her PCP was raving about the dr, office and staff since she was having a hard time getting in with her eye dr. (Which was about the same wait time) mostly because her PCP referred she opted to wait for this office because she likes to do what he recommends. Day of appointment the office calls and tells me they called yesterday (not 1 missed call or voicemail) to let us know that they ran her Medicare and her Medicaid does not show on her Medicare and she would be responsible for the 20%. I asked is that legal? And was going to explain: (Working in billing prior) I know that it's not legal to bill a patient when they have supplemental coverage and patient can only billed after secondary has been billed, however most dr office for Medi-Medi will write them off. She interrupts me and says "Legal!? Yes it is." I responded with, "doesn't sound so but it's very unethical for ..." Again interrupted with "Ethical?! Not sure what's unethical about this." I asked for her name and she put me on hold without giving me a name. Brenda comes on the line and before I go any further I ask and get the previous person's name, which was Erica. I explain the above and before I can finish a sentence when I mentioned as I did about after the legal question and that I was in billing she interrupts me and says, "oh good your in billing so you should already know this?" I respond in telling and asking why this office doesn't allow their clients to speak prior to being interrupted?? Yes I know billing and yes I know Medicare fudges up and doesn't always do/show alerts." Is that patients fault? No! But they said "maybe when you applied for Medicaid you didn't submit the form needed for Medicare to list your medical number" - patient blame?! Why??? Didn't explain this because at this point was irrelevant and they obviously have 0 patient care plus at this point I decided she will not see them! BUT She had medical a year prior to Medicare and all she was notified to do was to tell her drs Medicare was primary. Why doesn't this office do more for their patients? As a prior biller I know there are ways to verify medical eligibility beyond the easy online portal. The worst part is that my mother had been the person on the phone, she would have been okay with paying the 20% because her dr told her to see Dr Shivaran. But that's not right. How many patients has this office done this to? It's proper and ethical practice to verify eligibility prior to making appointments so any insurance issues are dealt with then and there. If they needed it to had anything fixed, I had over 4 weeks to do this update. Can you imagine if I tell a referred hospice patient... nope I can't see you today as a new patient newly discharged from the hospital because you're Medicare isn't linking Medical???!! No this needs to be done prior so either 1-patient is able to find another provider or 2-not book and in my situations stay in hospital until they find care. Horrible!! read more

The office called me less than 2 hours before my scheduled appt to cancel due to an insurance coverage issue, which they promised would notify patients 1-2 days before the appt. I'd been postponing cataract surgery for months when I decided that I had to get it done. I researched medical facilities, including Yelp, and decided on Claremont Eye Associates. This is a first-rate medical practice. Everyone that I dealt with was professional, knowledgeable and were nice people. Dr. Anil Shivaram, who did my cataract surgery, explained everything in the office and at the surgery facility, Archibald Surgery Center. Prior to the surgery, Dr. Shivaram provided a cell phone number to contact him with any questions or concerns. I called the doctor on a Saturday morning, left a message and Dr. Shivaram returned my call later that day and answered my questions. Talk about putting a patient at ease. Dr. McDermott was recommended to me from mutual friends. My family has seen both dR. And they both fantastic. However, the front office staff are just intolerable! They are rude, zero phone etiquette (it is genuinely impossible to finish a sentence as they interrupt every time), they are unprofessional while working. It is unfortunate the Dr.s have decided their patients deserve to be treated the way I have. I have some friends that have had the same experience but left long ago. It is a terrible reflection of the Dr.s themselves. My severely disabled child was in to see the Dr a few weeks back and did not need his eyeglass prescription changed. Dr. Said when you are ready to get him another pair just use the same prescription. I called to get a prescription emailed to me and the front desks said well I'll give you a referral to another place to get a refraction done and they can write u a script. I asked her to look in his chart. She will not. She keeps interrupting every sentence. She is not at all interested in helping the patient. She just says I'll give the Dr. a note. She is really adore me when I show up and wait for him to get that script and let him know how helpful MISS FRONT DESK is. I'm done. There are plenty of good Drs with far better staff to deal with.
