After going to this doctor office for over eight years and always leaving feeling broke I finally realized, they are WAY overpriced. I'm a college student, working part time, and I have pretty good VSP Insurance. I suppose I'm a slow learner because every year I go for my yearly checkup and renew my contact lens prescription. And every year they do a fitting and every year they seem to need to make unnecessary changes to my prescription which end up costing me much more money in the end. The last straw was my trip last week. At the end of my session the the cost of my appointment, fitting, and a year supply of contact lenses ran me $240! This is including a $40 instant rebate, it otherwise would have been $280!! After speaking with some coworkers in my office they all stated that the average price for these same services should be around $150. I'm more satisfied after going on this website and seeing other people who have made remarks about their prices being inflated. Dr. Baggarly is a good doctor, but I just feel like him and everyone else there charges way too much money, and push products and services on you that are unnecessary. I'm not accusing anyone of anything, but I just have to wonder who is really paying for all that brand new equipment they bought to fill up their new office.. read more

Too expensive. I have coverage ended up paying just as much without coverage. There is nothing there that makes this place better than any other place. Front desk was nice. Optometrist was pushy to get additional services so you can pay more when not needed. I wouldn't come back for sure. read more

In addition to waiting forty five minutes for a scheduled appointment, I answered the SAME questions in the office that I answered on a questionnaire in order to supposedly book my appointment. The doctor was incredibly impressed with himself and enjoyed sharing his successes but cared very little about what I had to say. This supposed massive selection of frames must be hidden in some secret location because I think LensCrafters has a much better selection; plus, you will receive your glasses the same day. In addition, when I did receive my glasses, I did not order a non-glare lens. Before leaving I ordered replacement non-glare lenses and was told they would be in within a week; I never heard from Claremont Optometry Group again. Needless to say, I did not receive my new lenses! Go elsewhere! read more

I specifically stated I didn't want unnecessary exams because I didn't want to be billed for things I didn't need- months later I get a bill for services not rendered. Unethical. The doctor was great- the billing practices are shady. I am considering calling my insurance company to let them know about this. read more

Dr Johannsen is wonderful! The office usually runs on time (not much of a wait), and has a great selection of glasses and sunglasses. The front office staff gets you checked in right away and I never felt pressured to do extra tests or buy extra add ins to my sunglasses. I would highly recommend them! read more

Dr. B is the BEST. You won't find a better person for exams and clarity of explanation. That said, the optical shop is the WORST. Find somewhere else to go. The staff promises to call but doesn't. I got two notices that my glasses had arrived and after waiting in the queue to be served it turned out that no glasses had arrived. The two answers I got out of them for every question was "I don't know" or "I understand" (Really? No you don't). My family spends $2,000 to $5,000 a year on their optical shop's products. This review is for the glasses store and not for the optometrists. I did not see an optometrist there instead brought my prescription from Kaiser and ordered my glasses. I will look forward to meeting my glasses. The place looks very professional and is filled with employees who are happy to help you with selecting glasses, answering questions or putting away the glasses for you. They take care of insurance. I found their price is also very competitive. They look sleek and high quality for the same price that you would pay at other less nice looking places. My family have been patients of Dr. Baggarly for at least 10 years. He is thorough and professional. Unfortunately, I recently had a very frustrating experience with his insurance billing department, specifically Reina. My husband had a vision test done performed by a technician prior to his exam by the doctor. He was quoted a price for the test (39.00), authorized the technician to do the test and paid his bill in full upon leaving the office. EIGHT MONTHS later we received a bill for a higher priced test (120.00). After calling the office for an explanation of the charges, Reina in the billing department explained that my husband's health insurance was billed the higher amount but denied payment because he doesn't have vision coverage. She stated that if a patient has health insurance and a diagnosis by the doctor, the office can bill for the 120.00 test (although my husband did not authorize or to his knowledge, receive this test). I questioned this billing practice but Reina stated that it was the office policy. Her attitude was arrogant and condescending and she seemed to think there was nothing wrong with billing a patient eight months after the fact for a test the patient did not authorize. I told her I would pay the 39.00 charge although I would have preferred that the charge be billed before leaving the office. I also requested she inform Dr. Baggarly of the discrepancy and that we would not be continuing as patients due to this questionable billing practice. read more

We have gone to Dr. Johannsen and Dr. Baggarley for over 25 years. I have always felt that they were a bit expensive, but excused it because we liked the Dr.'s and felt that the extra cost was worth it. We started at their office when my son was 6, he wears glasses full time, my husband also wears glasses full time. I personally only wear glasses when reading, but I can read with out them, but I know I am straining to read. Boy, was I in the dark about just how much more expensive they are. I was given an estimate for a very weak reading glass prescription. Approx cost was - Frame (nothing special) $120.00, Special blue anti-glare coat $140.00 and Lens $540.00 = totaling $800.00 - cost to me with my Insurance $500.00. I did not choose to get the glasses and the lady seemed a bit annoyed with me. I can wear the 2.0 cheap glasses and see just fine, so I could not justify spending on $540.00 on these reading glasses. I went to Costco just to see how much the cost was there. The cost at Costco - $230.00 for 2 pair. WOW WOW That isn't the end of the story. While at Costco they offered to call the office and have them FAX my prescription. After some difficultly in dealing with them the office FAX a prescription. I do not understand all the lens prescription stuff BUT according to the Costco Dr. The prescription was written in a very non standard 1/10 measurement that is only done as a specialty thing. They told me they see this with Dr.'s who are trying to make it difficult for patients to get their glasses anywhere but their office. FLASHBACK - This immediately reminded me that 5 years prior, my teenager could not find a frame she liked at the Drs office, so we went looking at other frames, prescription in hand. When we found a frame we had issues with his none standard prescription and at that time they had to call the Dr office and have them redo the prescription so they could make her glasses. Back to my glasses, the Costco Dr. called Claremont Optometry asking them to adjust the prescription to quarter steps. (standard measurements) They were given a great deal of hassle and I believe only fixed it because of the tenacity of the Costco Dr. who I heard on the phone tell them that they were unprofessional and unethical. Several hours later the prescription was Faxed to Costco. FYI my prescription was rounded down to be weaker, and not rounded up to be stronger. +1.12 was rounded to 1.0 and not 1.5 in one eye. and +1.62 was rounded to 1.50 and not 1.75. I don't know if this will matter much - I doubt it. read more

Don't waste your money, don't waste your time. I took my whole family here for years...service has been slow, communication subpar, but I try to support small businesses in the community. I recently needed a new set of glasses (my old ones broke) and called to get my replacement. "Sure no problem," the receptionist said. But I need to call you back to get all your information. "Fine," I said. After three days, with no call from her, I called back. "Oh I'm sorry, we will take care of it" the receptionist again said when I called ...but she couldn't find my info in the system. She said she'd call back when she found it. A week later, with no call back from her, I called again. "Oh I'm sorry." She said...let me look now. "We can order your frames no problem, just need a deposit." I paid the deposit...glasses will be done in a week - we'll call you back." After two weeks, no call (not surprisingly), I called back. "Oh I'm sorry. Let me have the lab guy call you back." He called back, oh there was a problem with the shipment. Will arrive this week and we will call you when ready." Three weeks go by...no call. I call back. "Oh we don't know what happened...blah blah blah". I tell them I am cancelling the order..."oh please, let us fix this they say." I respond "no, just want my deposit back". I hang up the phone. Five minutes later (miraculously) they call me back - "oh your glasses just arrived do you want them?" No apologies, no discount, clearly my business and my glasses were not important enough for this place. Six weeks for REPLACEMENT glasses. So I will take my poor eyesight and our 5 children to a small business that actually treats customers with respect....that communicates and updates when there are delays...that apologizes when they have messed up repeatedly. My husband and I have been going here since we were kids so this really breaks my heart but I am absolutely frustrated. My husband went in for a new pair of glasses and all goes well at the appointment. That night we get a text saying our friends were ready to get picked up. Great! We go in the next day and they deny that they sent the text even though we had it there as proof. Fine. Mistakes happen. We try to pay the copay and they said their system was down and that it could not be paid. We go back the next day, it is the same thing. THREE DAYS IT TOOK TO PAY THE COPAY. It's been a week and his glasses aren't ready and they are saying it won't be ready until the END OF THE MONTH. It is ridiculous. The staff up front are just incomplete and are rude. Dr. Baggarly is an excellent doctor but he needs to clean out his staff and actually get capable staff. read more

This was my first time here, and absolutely had the best experience. I've been wearing glasses all my life, and because of my sister's experience I decided to give this place a try. The office is nice and clean, I would 100% recommend Dr. Baggarly, he was so thorough and spent the time to make sure your prescription was correct. It was an experience that was different from other Optometry offices. He tried different eye tests, and everything is mostly computerized. After the examination was done, I finally got to pick out my frames. There's so many different options/styles to try on. OMG request Scott, he was the best in helping me pick out frames and I didn't feel rushed. He would give his opinion on the frames, advice on different styles, and genuinely so helpful and nice. I had the worst experience at Claremont Optometry. The first time I was there I waited 45 minutes for the Dr to see me. The first thing he said to me was, "Sorry I'm late, I went home for lunch." I couldn't believe it. It turns out he was told my appt was at 2:30, but in actuality was at 2:00. He got me out pretty quick since I had to go back to work. I came back a couple of days later to pick out my frames and pay for the appt. I had to wait 20 minutes for one of the employees to show up for work since no one could find my paperwork. Then I came back a week later for my follow up appointment on the fit of my contacts. What should have been a 5 minute appointment ended up being a 30 minute wait before I finally just walked out. When my contact lenses came in, they ended up giving me four boxes for my right eye and none for my left. when I went to bring 2 of the boxes back to exchange, the lady at the front was so rude and treated me like it was my fault the contacts were wrong. No one should ever go there!! I decided to try somewhere closer to my house and will always regret my decision. I will return to Montclair optometric center. They are way nicer and more efficient and more affordable!! DO NOT GO TO CLAREMONT OPTOMETRY!!!! read more

GO Elsewhere! My husband, daughter and I went for exams using our insurance. With insurance I have never paid over 100.00 for glasses. They rip you off, they are over priced. Our bill came to over 350.00. The staff is very nice until........something goes wrong. Everything went wrong. My daughters frame choice was out of stock, they said they should be in in a week, it took 8 MONTHS! When they came in guess what???? they were the wrong color, they re-ordered them and said it would only take a week or so, guess what again? They never called us, not even a call of an explanation. This is where it gets good. They billed me for them and I told them I'm not paying for nothing. They threatened to send me to collections, beware of this place, they are sneaky, unprofessional, and could care less about you. All they want is your money, Too many great optometrists out there, don't go here! read more
