With my wife and I, he was the Biggest love bug. So cute, and funny, and cuddly. But we can only imagine the terrible experiences he had endured. He had a scar atop his head and was very nervous around new people, which led to behavior like growling and snapping at times. His fear was only made worse by social distancing and not being around new people. Once Covid settled a bit we sought out a trainer for him. I'll never forget the first day Dawna came to the house. Our pup growled and was very displeased that this stranger was in his space, and worse, trying to interact with him. Dawna was not a bit deterred, which I was impressed by but I remained skeptical. Fast forward something like 2 weeks: Dawna interacted with him with ease on training days and he loved receiving love and pets from her. We couldn't believe it. Dawna taught us how to train him and he was able to meet all kinds of new people and doggy friends on our outings. We are forever grateful. We only had 2 years with him. Cancer. Prior to this, we went through two other trainers: one which has signs at the local Pet Food Express (Lori Hamilton) whose practices I find questionable. My Pomeranian has a high fear arousal response and his behavior was made worse with the trainer's use of the prong collar and "snapping" method of using quick forceful tugs (Cesar Milan type of training which is not good for fear reactive dogs). This unfortunately impacted my dog's behavior and his trigger stacking got worse. Our next trainer had good practices, but we did not see any improvement. Enter Johanna: she is highly certified, has extensive experience as a vet technician and also was a dolphin trainer--so she definitely knows operant conditioning and she practices positive/reward techniques. Most importantly: she will tell you up front on how to manage your expectations. Not all dogs will ever be "normal" and rather than giving false hopes and promises, she is very real. After some training and patience, I am so happy to see great progress. Sometimes there are good days and bad days, but you take the good days and take it for what you can. Johanna truly understands sentient creatures and the dogs respond warmly to her. I was so happy to see my dog being able to walk into the pet store today without having a total meltdown! Most dogs like mine will need medications like doggie Prozac ( I was reticent but have come to see it was beneficial-- my dog was able to calm his brain down to absorb Johanna's training and thus regulate his response). I can see him trying to control himself and I work on understanding his limits and not pushing beyond. Of course I had to check-in on my own thoughts and actions. We are very grateful to Johanna and UC Davis! One other thing that helps with fear reactive dogs is training in nosework-- this scent search activity is very beneficial for all dogs: it sharpens cognitive skills, allows for problem solving and they are in their true doggy element.. all while having loads of fun. She interprets dog speak so well ... she got us thinking and understanding Cosimo's reactions and feelings and more and more in tune with him. It's been wonderful to learn and understand our dog and work with him in the framework Jenna set. We relocated to Germany early March and brought Cosimo. In the months prior to travel, we read about Germany and how pet-friendly the country is - and how well-behaved German doggies are. This worried us and we did a few sessions with Jenna to brush up our skills in managing Cosimo.
