To be honest, most people are out here unloading junk like they stole a bunch of stuff from a hoarder and the hoarder didn't even notice.

Suck it up and pay the $$. PS its a donation - so if you are REALLY that cheap, you can just go in. I always wish I had $1000 or more to spend everytime I come - but alas, I usually don't have more than $30. Oh punk rock flea market, I wish you were monthly.

Having grown up poor and being forced to wear way too big, tooth achingly ugly winter coats from Goodwill that I'd 'grow into,' hideous polyester button down shirts that a pimp wouldn't touch, scratchy, pill-y wool sweaters reeking of camphor, high water generic blue jeans and summer shorts I would not put on a dog in a clown show, I assiduously avoid things like this. V. was insistent that I would 'go wild' over this flea market because 'it won't be like anything else you've ever been to!!!' I had my doubts about that but you make concessions for friends. We paid our $3 entrance fee and strolled around. Most of the vendor tables had things that were of no interest to me; old playing cards, glassware that was (presumably) collectible, vintage tattoo flash, old silver plate and older, tarnished sterling silver tableware, racks of *shudder* vintage clothing and shoes, most of which had seen better days. There were some well curated tables of antique jewelry and antique beaded bags at very non-bargain prices and a few tables of what I can only call culled pieces from cabinets of curiosities-moth eaten taxidermied items and non-p.c. tourist trash. For the most part, the vendors we encountered were bored seeming or down right rude. The people watching was far better than anything for sale. After 2 hours here, V. bought a very large, ornate dusty rose colored tassel. I asked what she planned to do with it. Her response? 'Do you want it, Warren?' Uhh-that would be NO. I bought nothing. V. wanted to take another spin around the place so I opted to go out to her car to sit and read, telling her to take her time. Another 2 hours passed. She returned empty handed, other than the tassel, to the car. Would I go back? Nope. Should you go if the flea market opens again? It's $3 and maybe an hour or 2 out of your life. You could spend that time and money in worse ways.

It is held during FALL/WINTER SEASONS (cold weather) inside the massive 23rd Street Armory in Center City. In WARM seasons it is held at the Sheet Metal Worker's Union on S. Columbus BLVD, as an indoor/outdoor event. ALWAYS CHECK THE WEBSITE to make sure you are going to the right location. For a flat entry fee - $12 in person in cash, more if you pre-buy due to fees - you are given entry to the FULL WEEKEND, which is either Sat/Sun or may also include a Friday night market. Over the course of the weekend there is a live DJ, food trucks and vendors of coffee and booze, and anywhere from 300-400 different vendors offering everything under the sun. Vintage and custom clothing, records and music, oddities and gothy witchy nonsense, jewelry and design items, candles, houseplants, visual art of every imaginable type is there for you. The event is pet and family friendly and you can easily spend four hours losing yourself in the scene. You *WILL* find a treasure.

Especially since they're gearing up to have record breaking attendance during the 2 day event. The warehouse that now plays home to the market is right across from where it used o be at Starlight Ballroom and is freaking HUGE. in the past I have seen it house classic cars and other such curiosities to the side, but now it appears to host roller derby events on the side. This space gives the market the ample space that it really needed during previous years(it used to feel hot and sweaty in December!), and also makes it so that vendors can display their treasures more prevalently, and even gives the Starlight room to host an additional record sale event. And the treasures that you find are still as wacky and abundant as ever, and the event still goes towards the good cause of helping R5 Productions (http://www.yelp.com/biz/r5-productions-philadelphia#hrid:21y_-IooXyp3XTMNc20JaA/src:self) bring kick ass shows to Philly more frequently at cheaper prices than Ticket Bastard. When I finished splurging on yet another 10 Show Pass, I still managed to score the entire series of Cowboy Bebop for $3, 2 Ralph Steadman drawn Hunter S Thompson Gonzo books for $6, a brand new ring, and a whole lot more. So if you love thrifting for cool and random treasures and supporting awesome live music, you best make it to today's portion of the market while you still can!
