We visited the Philly AIDS Thrift and had a great time exploring the treasures that this maze of a thrift store holds. The Thrift has a large variety of sections, including wall art, knick knacks, clothing, and larger pieces of furniture. Like all good thrift stores, they have special tag discount days that award you a greater discount on certain items. Aside from acquiring new stuff, my favorite part is supporting the mission of the Philly AIDS Thrift. I would definitely frequent this shop on the regular if I was local! read more

How do you even review a place like Philly AIDS Thrift? It's an absolute treasure hunt in the best way. Sometimes you find the most amazing pieces and think "score!" and other times it's a miss. They have everything you'd think of a larger thrift store. Clothes, jewelry, pottery, paintings, DVD's, old cords if you need to replace one, board games, kitchenware, costumes, dresses, shoes, furniture, purses, lamps, decorations, and books. SO. MANY. BOOKS. You could spend 5 minutes in there, you could spend 5 hours in there. You could come home with gold or go home empty handed. The choice is yours and if you don't find anything, come back the next day - who knows what somebody may have donated. As far as donations go, they are super friendly and helpful. You just go into the door next to the entrance and drop your items off - no questions asked. They handle everything. Also, you have to love a store that supports a good cause and is fueled by volunteers and promotes health and wellness. Happy treasure hunting! read more

How has it been 8 years since I reviewed this marvelous celebration of all things thrift & kitsch? It's fabulously fun thrifting. I took SCFG there for her inaugural visit, on a DJ day so we were dancing while shopping. They've renovated the storefront and added a permanent dollar Heaven area with commercial laundry bins full of clothing. SCFG found a fab wool blend peacoat, a pair of high - end jeans and a Halloween dress there. In slightly depressing news, I found a striped velour top identical to one I wore in high school in the "vintage clothing" room. Sigh. Go. Have fun. Find cool and kitschy stuff. One of my favorite stores in all of Philadelphia. You can find so much at the Philly AIDS Thrift Store. On this most recent visit, I procured a bone china dish for a mere $5.99 + tax. I have no idea what the value of this dish actually is, though I am sure it is north of what I paid. Regardless, I did not buy it because I thought I could turn a profit - I bought it because it was beautiful and it spoke to me, and the price was too good to pass up. Rinse, wash, and repeat. This has been my experience at the Philly AIDS Thrift. So many wonderful gems just littered throughout the store, and it is never the same anytime you go. Turnover of goods is high, so it is worth taking some time every month to visit. You never know what you'll find, and it is for a good cause. read more

Just adding that I had a fantastic furniture find here. A pair of nightstands for 40 bucks. They were in good structural shape, but pretty ordinary, looking. I painted them and replace the knobs and, wow, save myself a boatload of money buying new furniture! read more

I could spend hours perusing the whole store. It looks small from the outside, but there are two levels of clothing, housewares, books, furniture, decor, etc. The pricing is reasonable, and even if your budget is extremely limited, there are many dollar bins with great finds if you're willing to spend some time to dig around. Be sure to look in every section as I was able to find a brand new camping compression sack in the kids section. read more

Holy Hipster Hangout Batman! I came here tonight for the first time in literally years and the place I used to love and thrift In was gone. Massive crowds of people were everywhere and in every room when I entered. Upstairs wasn't much better. I personally love this place to stock up on books for my grandmother to read. The back room on the second floor has wall to wall bookshelves of all types of books for .29c each or 4/$1. They also have bins of random clothing for $1 in that room. As with everything else, prices have risen a bit since my last visit and about 1/2 of the clothing in the "vintage room" that was marked vintage wasn't. Still lots to look at overall! They have definitely become more popular in the few years since my last visit which makes it tough to navigate. (My visit was a Saturday afternoon) I had originally allotted about an hour for my visit and I still didn't see all of the rooms. Will definitely have to make a return visit at some point to see the rest; hopefully on a less busy day! read more

What an amazing gem! A great place to bring out of town visitors, hunt for a last minute costume, or drop off donations (and I do all of the above regularly). The book room alone is worth a trip (but make sure you check out Mostly Books around the corner on Bainbridge too!). The selection isn't as curated as some thrift shops so you might have to hunt a bit, and sometimes you'll walk away empty handed, but it's a great option! I love this place. I've purchased a few odds and ends - things for Halloween costumes, wedding supplies (my sister did mismatched china for hers and I found several sets here!), clothes, gifts and furniture. I have donated anything that I thought was in good enough shape to be sold, and I know they're able to sell/recycle the clothes that they don't keep as used cloth. The volunteers go through a massive amount of donations and decide what to trash or sell, then staff the entire store. It's a big operation and they're always good, helpful people. And of course, it is for a great cause. Gotta love this place! read more

My favorite thrift store of all time in Philly! You can bring your used items and donate anytime Tuesday Thursday and Saturday. Store is well organize and eccentric, pretty much find everything weird and cool vintage used. Items range from clothing to furniture, shoes and collectibles. There is a huge well organized section of used DVD and CDs section on the first floor. Large book section organized by categories. Their price is seriously unbeatable compared to many other used books stores out, and you can find them in good to very good conditions. They also offer free private HIV testing. Excellent customer service at the front desk. Located by passyunk and south street in a large house, you can easily wander around inside, endless things to look at. read more

Whenever I'm in the neighborhood I always like to stop my Philly AIDS Thrift. I'm an avid thrifter and some thrift shops as of late have been getting rather expensive for second hand purchases that were donated. Their prices are spot on for their pieces and their selection is eclectic. Their booms section spans several rooms and they actually had a small assortment of cassette tapes (for this weirdo who has a car old enough for a cassette player in her car). Overall I always come out of this store with something wild, or a couple of books. read more

I remember when this place was at the original location. It's was cheap, cool and I got AMAZING dresses there for $7. Now it's just so hipster and part of being hipster is that you pay too much for things and like it. I don't like it. really really loved this place. Lots of cool knick knacks and everything was pretty cheap. Nice lightweight trench coats for $12. got some dishes for 99 cents each. they have almost anything and everything here. vases, dishware, clothes, books, music, misc. etc. It does smell a bit funky in certain areas, but I've gotten used to that thrifting. If you can bear it, its definitely worth it! And the people working there are so so sweet. In terms of clothes, if you're here to thrift you might not find too too much. its not like a goodwill where there's a ton of long racks but there might be some hidden gems. lots of vintage items. Mostly middle aged mom vibes in terms of the clothing available. read more

Located just a block away from South Street down 5th towards Passyunk. Fairly large thrift store with a nice mix of vintage and junk and used goods. Depending on your definition of used goods, it could be vintage or it could be junk. Now a David Soul album could be junk, but I loved David Soul in 1976 so to me, that's not junk. A David Cassidy album is another story. Don't judge. Came in searching for enamelware and didn't get lucky, but there were cool little kitchen glassware containers that called my name. Didn't need them, so I had to ignore that siren. Prices decent. Music a bit too loud in there - yes, Cindy Lauper, girls wanna have fun. Staff friendly. read more

Philly AIDS Thrift has come a really long way since its inception! I recently wandered back just to look around and found so many cute, unique items! They really have EVERYTHING. If you are willing and have the time to really dig through all the nooks and crannies of the two floors, you will find some really great deals. There is a nice variety of basics and more high-end items to suit anyone's wants and needs. All the workers are really nice and seem to genuinely enjoy being there. Out front, there are boxes of items full of FREE stuff, which have a hodgepodge of books and other misc. items. Most recently, I found a fully-working Cuisinart immersion blender that just needed a good ole cleaning and disinfection :) Happy hunting! read more

Whether it was the old storefront on South Street, the Bainbridge Street location, or its new home on the starting point of East Passyunk; Philly A.I.D.S Thrift has always been one hell of a store. But its current location finally gives it the space to truly showcase their overall vision as a whole. And they do it with a creative gusto in their displays and amazing outdoor toy tree! They still give to the good cause of funding A.I.D.S research. And they still give you some killer deals in the process, especially if its for clothing and books. But now you can scope out their furniture, electronics, media room, kitchenware, and then some without having to search through a tiny crowded area or go across the street; making the good deals even more obtainable. And they somehow manage to hook up even more sales while providing even more random and functional merchandise. read more

Another local favorite and if it wasn't for our local friend and Yelp wouldn't have never stumble upon here. Every item here is actually in pretty good condition and comes at a steep discount. A lot of items are actually in their original packaging and practically new! The amount of time it takes into organizing and sorting everything here must be quite an effort and I think they did an amazing job in keeping every section updated. Even if you're not looking to buy anything its quite interesting and can be an very entertaining few hours touring the place. Very cool place and very pleasant experience here. Some area like the kitchen-wares definitely need to be careful to not knocked anything over though. We had some time to spend here while waiting for the rain to pass as it was pouring out, my personal favorites are the books and furniture section, its just so cool to take a look at everything here. read more

I'm a thrift queen, and Philly AIDS does not disappoint! As far as I'm concerned this is as good as it gets! Keep in mind, this is a thrift store. Be prepared for a bit of a rummage, but if you're patient, you can come across some real gems. They have an entire section of the upstairs that's a dollar. A DOLLAR! I got a nice pair of plain black slacks from NY&Co for one dollar! They're in mint condition! I also scored a pair of like-new gold Cole Haan flats here for $5. If you're into thrifting, you'll love the adventure of scoring a great deal here. There's tons of funky, vintage, and one-of-kind items. The store is kind of a maze. There's some organization to chaos, but it can be a little confusing, and the store seemingly goes on forever. There's always a shelf of knick knacks to peruse or a wall of eclectic art to scan through. The folks who run this joint are some top notch Philadelphians. The store operates from a combination of workers and volunteers, and all of the good karma that goes into this store seeps into the community as they host regular free testing days, give out free condoms and education, and cultivate so many funds to fight HIV/AIDS in our community. read more
