I used Clarkson Eyecare over the past several years. I've always gotten good service from the doctors themselves. The problem is that they add extra services to the checkup without disclosing the additional fees involved. This happened twice in a row. The first time I paid; the second time I brought it to their attention at checkout. They ended up waiving the fee, which was appreciated. However, I should have been told upfront that some services weren't covered by my co-pay. I shouldn't have had to argue about it at the end. Given that this happened more than once, I can only assume it's Clarkson Eyecare's policy to tack on extra fees. Despite the adequate level of eye care I reviewed in the past, I will go elsewhere for my eye exams from now on. read more

The doctor was great. I ended up having to pay $85 for a pair of reading glasses, that they assured me was only going to be $23. Who wants $85 reading glasses? When I came to pick them up, they told me I had to pay the additional amount because the glasses had already been made. I could pay the additional $40 restocking fee and not get the glasses or the original $23 back either. My insurance says it was billed wrong, Clarkson agrees it is wrong, but it's now been almost 3 months and when I call billing they say they have to look into it. I'm done. read more

Had an appointment for a year. Showed up and they asked if I responded to the text to confirm my appointment- I didn't receive a text to respond to. Instead of calling a 10+ year reliable customer they filled my appointment time and would do nothing to fix the issue. There were 4 employees in there doing nothing and their system failure became my problem. I should have looked for someplace else after last year appointment when they ordered a - contact prescription instead of the + one I needed. Don't go here! read more

I loved Dr Collier but I just left the Kirkwood office and I will never be back. Unfortunately this has become the kind of place that will order you the wrong contacts, admit to making the error, but then tell you that you still have to pay for the open boxes because it is "policy". Completely insane. I didn't care about the money but the idea that they wouldn't make it right for me (as they had promised they would before) was just shocking. And the front desk staff did a great job of making me feel like the jerk for questioning it. I was a Clarkson patient for I think 30 years and I was with Dr. Collier for probably 15 of those and I just made an appointment with someone else. It's very sad. read more

I went to Clarkson to get an eye exam and new frames. I picked out options for new frames and glasses, the price was over $500. I went to pick up my new glasses and they handed them to me at the counter I put them on looked in the mirror, there at the counter, and they looked a little crooked. The girl adjusted them a little bit and they still felt a little crooked we decided to give it a try the way they were. That was on Friday, so through the weekend it was clearly not correct they were too crooked and I could not adjust to the prescription it was pretty blurry. I went back in on Monday and said frames are crooked and not working for me, we sat down and took a look. She tried to adjust them and could not adjust them after a few tries I said "maybe the frames are defective". She went over and talked to someone and came back and said will order you a new pair of frames. After awhile I got the new frames and they looked ok so I took them home and tried to get adjusted to the new prescription. Meanwhile the prescription seemed blury. The right eye was really bad and I had a hard time focusing. I called and said the right eye has a big problem. I again went in and they gave me a quick exam on that eye. Yes it's wrong and will order a new one for the right eye. That took awhile to get the new one. I finally get the finished glasses. I take them home and now try to adjust to the new prescription again. I cannot adjust to them they are too fuzzy in both eyes. I can't see street signs in the day time and at night the lights are star bursts, nothing is crisp like a new prescription should be. I decided to go back to my old glasses which I can see a mile away and very crisp. I decide to just eat the $500. and go somewhere else. After thinking about it I decided that I shouldn't just brush it off and I called Clarkson to let them know that I was totally dissatisfied with their service all the way around. They informed me that they could only refund me money for the frames and prescription not for the doctors services of the eye exam. I stated that the doctor gave me the wrong prescription in the first place why do I need to pay for that exam. She said that's way the doctor charges, I could get my money back for my frames and glasses but not for the exam that was wrong in the first place. They are going to refund me $400 something dollars but I am still going to eat the exam cost. I am a senior citizen and I go there in good faith to get a new pair of glasses and end up with three big problems. I would think twice about going to Clarkson on Kirkwood Road if I've had three big problems with one pair of prescription glasses and not get a total refund what must other people go through there. read more

I was billed for services I did not receive and had specifically informed the staff that I did not want. I paid the invoice in full on the date of service. About two months later, I received a bill for $126.34. I called the billing office and, after explaining the situation, was told this was, apparently, a billing code error. I then received a call from the Kirkwood office manager who was very rude. She claimed that I had received the service (I didn't). I recently received a second bill for $126.34. Because of Clarkson's refusal to remove this charge as well as the rudeness of the office manager, I will never patronize this business in the future. read more

Buyer Beware Clarkson will not warn you if you are referred by your doctor for an exam of any co-pay prior to the exam. I receive a text message today with an link to an invoice for the co-pay a month after the scheduled exam which was the first notice that Clarkson gave of the amount of the co-pay. No mention when they scheduled the visit. No mention when they got the insurance card with the co-pay amount listed on it. No attempt to collect the co-pay at the time of the exam or even a mention. How hard is it to say Your co-pay is xxx do you want to pay that now or do you want us to invoice you? Not surprise me with a text message link invoice a month later. Surprise Pay Us NOW. Then the text message says that you can download the invoice as a pdf for your records buts its really only a link not a pdf and you have to call to get a pdf emailed to you so that you have a record of the invoice. Then they have both your phone and email address. read more

Went in for my appointment that I booked weeks ago and they said it's not there. Just not there and they couldn't find an appointment at all, not even if they had messed up and put it on another day. I showed them my phone where it was clearly for today at 920am. The chick at the front desk was rude and had a totally whatever attitude, to top it off she took a personal call while trying to look up the appointment. Behind her the doctor was just laughing and screwing around with another person. What a completely unprofessional place with terrible service, good luck if you make an appointment, hopefully they won't lose it! What a great bunch of people. I have multiple health problems and my vision fluctuates, which makes getting glasses difficult. Today, I had to return my new glasses to Clarkson because of headaches. I have no quarrel with the doctors at this location; my issue is with the manager, Jujaun, and the staff. I visited today along with my wife. As I waited for my wife to be fitted for new glasses I asked if the staff member behind the counter adjust my glasses that had become loose. The staff member tightened the frame and applied heat at the bridge to bend the frame. When I tried them on, I absolutely could not see anything. After putting in a spare set of glasses, I could see that the heat applied to the bridge melted the set face of both lenses. See the attached photo. The staff member denied overheating the lenses and said my glasses where scratched. I insisted to speak with the manager and asked him to examine the lenses. He refused to admit the mistake and reminded me that the lenses where out of warranty. I persisted and he finally agreed to replace the lenses "this time only." Jujuan refused to admit that the staff member damaged the glasses. As an Eyecare professional, he should have been able to recognize that the severity of the pitting due to heat stress would have made the glasses unusable, yet he and the staff clearly saw me wearing them into the shop. These are the same glasses that took a month to get originally because the Clarkson staff ordered the wrong lens. Previously my wife had to have lenses made twice because of a similar mistake. I only ask that people admit their mistakes, instead of blaming the customer. read more

I have been going to Dr. Collier at Clarkson Eyecare in Kirkwood for approximately 10 years. She has been an incredible optometrist for me as well as my children. She is very thorough, and detected an abnormality near my son's retina in which she referred us immediately to a retina specialist. Unfortunately, we are leaving her place of practice due to her front office staff. I have never experienced such cold and rude behavior by any office. I am a physician, so I know the importance of a friendly and patient-supportive staff. Between appointments for myself, or my children, I have never been late for an appointment in 10 years. Today I called to let the office know that I was behind traffic but right down the road and would be there in two minutes. By the time I parked and got to the office door, I was 11 minutes behind my appointment time. The front office, very rudely, told me that policy is they won't let patients be seen that are over 10 minutes late. Since I was 11 minutes late, I would need to reschedule my appointment. I understand the importance of being prompt in order to keep an office moving. However, knowing a patient personally and being considerate of a circumstance is so important. A one-minute time difference against policy should not trump that, especially when it has never happened any time before .There was nothing kind or empathetic in their response. The front office was nothing but cold and rude. I had waited 2 months for that appointment, and since I was one minute over their "policy" for the first time in 10 years of seeing Dr. Collier, they would not let me see her. I am beyond appalled by this experience. However, it is a reminder to me to keep watch of my own front office, and the kindness and compassion that they exhibit to my own patients. Thankfully, I have already found a new optometrist, but will very much miss Dr. Collier. read more

Though Kirkwood Clarkson describes several COVID safety measures over the phone, be warned they are not following them in practice. When I arrived for my appointment, their lobby was packed -- at least 3 adult customers, several staff, 3-4 kids sitting along the window, everybody in the very small space in front of their front desk. Depending on your comfort level about being crammed with a lot of other people right now, you may wish to avoid this location. read more

I ordered a pair of glasses from this location. The tech specifically asked if I wanted the photo-chromatic (transitions) since I had them on my old glasses and I said yes. She got a few more specifics like what kind of progressives, anti scratch coating, etc and gave me a price which I paid. I ASSUMED that the price I paid included the photo-chromatic lenses because that is what I had asked for. So when I realized, the next day after receiving the new glasses, that the lenses were, in fact, NOT photo-chromatic, I returned to this location to get the issue fixed. Well apparently the person who took my order neglected to add the photo-chromatic option and so, thru no fault of my own, I did not get the lenses I thought I had ordered. Now they wasn't me to pay an additional $100 to get the issue fixed. Yes, I do understand that if the order has been submitted correctly in the first place I would have had to pay that additional $100 BUT 1. I was ASKED if I wanted the photo-chromatic option. 2. I affirmed that I did indeed wast the photo-chromatic option. 3. I was given a price that I had EVERY RIGHT to assume included the photo-chromatic option. And now they want me to pay for THEIR mistake. Sorry, not going to happen. A decent company would accept responsibility for the error and correct the mistake without expecting me to pay for it. I am seriously considering returning the glasses and getting me money back, obtaining my prescription & getting glasses elsewhere. As it is, I will never do business with ANY Clarkson Eyecare again, nor will anyone in my immediate family. read more

So I want to order on-line a 6-month supply of contacts and the on-line store calls them to confirm my last Rx and they would not and that I needed to come in to get my Rx. I was a multi-year patient with Clarkson Eyecare. The docs and staff are always friendly. I left Clarkson after receiving multiple robo calls and texts reminding me about needing to make an appointment. It was annoying. After taking my business to a local family-owned eye center, I've sense realized what I've been missing in an eye examination. If you value the money in you wallet and an accurate assessment of your eyes, steer clear of this facility. I went in for an eye exam because I believed I had something in my eye. My vision insurance and medical insurance billed and $500.00 out of my pocket later my eye is in the same condition it was when I stepped in the door. I have since met with an eye doctor that was I was referred too by many people and he was shocked to hear what Dr. Collier had prescribed me. This facility is simply and over advertised money pit for Clarkson Eyecare. They place a great friendly façade upon you when you walk in the door an then gouge you for every possible penny they can squeeze. I will never return to this facility and I advise anyone looking to avoid this facility at all costs. They are the poster for unethical medical practices. read more
