I had a terrible experience here and I hope that me sharing this, stops other people from having to go through the same thing. She charged me $300 of my insurance for X-rays, she examined my mouth and told me that I have no cavities, no gum disease, no periodontal disease, and that my wisdom teeth may be a problem in the future years from now. She recommend I get them removed so they would be a issue in the future just in case. So then I scheduled my cleaning. Then when I showed up for a regular cleaning, she told me she would refuse to clean my teeth unless I had surgery, she was forcing me to have oral surgery that didn't need to be done, in order to get a regular cleaning of my teeth. I asked why didn't you tell me that and they never left a voicemail or called. I asked them why can't I just have my regular cleaning, and she said she didn't feel comfortable until I had unnecessary surgery that she herself even admitted to me. I really had needed my teeth cleaned, I hadn't been in a while and to be treated this way was unacceptable. To make sure I wasn't crazy, I called multiple dentist and explained my situation, and they all told me that if I had no cavities or any disease or swelling and that I just had wisdom teeth that currently we're not a issue and wouldn't be for year's maybe and maybe not, then it is not regular practice for a dentist to force oral surgery that I explained I didn't want, and even worse the dentist even said wasn't a issue and may not be. I want a full refund from this place, I will be taking legal action against them with the dental board, this was not ok. read more

Beware! I went for two visits with Dr. Casmir. 1st time in November, where I received a consultation and X-Rays. I was advised of the amount I'd have to pay if any. On my second visit I was advised that all but $558 would be covered on my policy and needed to be paid that day. Days later I then received a bill of $430. I called to ask about the bill and spoke with Jessica and Dr. Casimir who advised it was a billing error as the dates were incorrect. After the call, I figured that this was take care of. As the months passed I continued to receive the same bill and readdressed concern. They continued to provide the same answer; they will contact the insurance as previously as the error was done on their behalf. On Aug 27th, I called to schedule an appointment and provided Dr. Casimir my new insurance card; she was to call me back as she wanted to reach out to my new insurance. I never got a call back. Today, Oct 1st, I called the office hoping I'd get some details on both my previous bill and my benefits. Instead, I spoke with Tiffany who stated the last note on my file was from November and that Jessica no longer works there. She told me would reach out to the insurance and see what happened. She called me back about 5 mins later stating I did not pay my portion and there was no error. She went on to say I was lying and that no mistakes were made. She told me she was sending me to collections and that she was a new partner. Rudely, hung up when I wanted to speak. They clearly delete patient information as I have multiple calls to and from the office, including a voicemail stating the error was on their end. Save your voicemails and call logs. Call your insurance prior and post visits. read more

I echo the sentiments of fellow reviewer, Nicole S.: I would follow Dr. Robert Deaver anywhere. I too have had numerous dental issues, ranging from cavities to root canals implants/dental reconstruction. Dr. Deaver has always gone above and beyond in treating me and has provided the care to me that he would want a member of his own family to receive. He has coordinated my with other dental professionals, including Dr. John M. Domanico, DDS (also tops in my book). He has always been fair and honest with me, taking the time to explain my options and make sure that I understand them. I have supreme confidence in his abilities as a dentist. He stays informed of new techniques and developments in his field and teaches at the UIC College of Dentistry. Additionally, after my dental reconstruction he (and Dr. Domanico) made sure that I got a night guard to help prevent future issues. I cannot recommend Dr. Deaver highly enough. read more

My family has entrusted our dental care to Dr. Deaver for almost 20 years now. He is the most attentive, knowledgeable, and caring doctor I've ever seen. He always takes the time to explain what he's doing and why, and his delivery of this-day-in-history / fact-of-the-day is a nice bonus. I know my family's long history of very positive experiences with Dr. Deaver is not unique to us, as there is often spontaneous conversation in the waiting room between his patients about how awesome he is. read more

Dr. Bob Deaver has been my dentist for about 15 years now. He is the best dentist I have had. He has all the traits necessary to be a fine dentist--experience, skill, compassion, and patience. I've had a lot of dental work done by him including bridges and crowns, and he does a great job in explaining various options and what to expect, and the results have always been excellent. He also has a great network of dental associates in other areas who he's referred and works with. I've had braces, implants, and root canals that have all turned out great thanks to Dr. Bob working closely with them, managing the process and doing the finishing work. And lastly, Dr. Bob is a really nice person--easy to talk to and very friendly. I consider him a friend in addition to being my dentist. I highly recommend him. read more

Dr. Casimir recommended X-rays outside of the typical insurance schedule which cost $155.00 out of pocket. The X-rays taken were by far the most I have ever had taken and I am worried about the level of radiation exposure. All other X-rays I've had in my life from a dentist have taken no longer than 2-3 minutes and these took half an hour with so many different angles, etc. Dr. Casimir then proceeded to give me the most painful cleaning I have ever had. After incessantly poking my gums she seemed concerned that they were bleeding so much. Well, yeah! Gums are soft tissue - I would be more concerned if they didn't bleed after the severe cleaning you gave! I will not be returning to this practice. read more

I've switched to this practice because the excellent Dr. Bob Deaver, my longtime dentist, is joining Classic Smiles. But I had to make an appointment for an afternoon when he wasn't in this office. Not a problem (although I look forward to seeing Dr. Deaver soon)...Dr. Casimir is excellent as well, and my appointment for checkup and cleaning was very worthwhile. My cleaning by the hygienist was unrushed and thorough and included complete recording of gum receding depths (my term...I forgot the real term). Very complete and unvarnished assessment of my teeth by the hygienist and Dr. Casimir, and a thorough scraping and cleaning. I've made the right choice. A shorter-than-expected walk up from the Roosevelt CTA station...who knew there's no 10th Street? read more

BEWARE. I hate writing bad reviews for medical offices but I feel I should at least let people know about the fiasco of an experience I got. The office is nice and clean and the front desk staff were polite and efficient. My initial cleaning and appointment went well. There were a few cosmetic cosmetic sales pitches that I just plain cut into and said no to before it got long-winded. Then I was pushed into a check-up within the next week or two because I told her I hadn't been to the dentist for a cleaning in years (but I swear I have fabulous teeth). I wasn't up for it but complied to get out of there. Later I rescheduled it. Then I was bad and I missed it completely. Tsk, tsk. According to their Financial Policies Form that new patients sign, I then should have been billed for the missed appointment. However six months passed by and not a word was heard from them nor a bill seen. And honestly, by then I plumb forgot I ever agreed to and signed a form stating I would pay the $75.00 missed appointment fee. Then I moved to Minnesota in August and a little over a month after I moved, I got two voicemails from Smart Smiles Dental. The first voicemail (left from the day before) was about calling them back to confirm an appointment for the next day. And the second voicemail (left earlier that morning) was about missing the supposed appointment-- an appointment I NEVER made. I would have just shrugged it off as maybe a mistake on their end; no harm, no foul BUT the second voicemail went on to tell me that they were now going to charge me $75.00 for that morning's missed appointment-- an appointment I, 1., did NOT make, and 2., did NOT call back to confirm. I called and the receptionst informed me that I had TWO missed appointment fees to pay for. I explained that I never made the most recent appointment as I NO LONGER LIVE IN THE STATE OF ILLINOIS and it would be silly of me to make an appointment for an office 300+ miles away on a week day when I am not in town visiting my boyfriend. I also requested they stop calling me as I no longer required their services. She apologized & said they would not charge me for the recent missed appointment I hadn't made but that I was still responsible for the appointment that I missed in April. Again, I had forgotten about the Financial Policies Form so I requested she email a copy of the form to me and that I would take care of it from there. Two days later, I get an email from the dentist herself subtly threatening to bill me for the appointment I never made if I did not pay for the missed appointment from April. WHY ARE THEY THREATENING TO CHARGE ME FOR AN APPOINTMENT I NEVER EVEN MADE?! HOW RUDE! SECONDLY, why did they wait until I informed them I was no longer going to need their services (as I had moved out of the state of Illinois and have been living in another state for almost two months now) to suddenly bill me; six months after the fact? Then I come onto Yelp and read someone else's review that says he wasn't charged for cancelling or rescheduling his appointment at the last minute. Apparently, they pick and choose who to bill for missed appointments. If you're a good patient that goes when you're beckoned, even if you didn't schedule nor confirm it, I am sure you will be one of the 'chosen'. So I guess as long as you continue to use their services, they won't fraudulently make appointments for you and extort as much money as they can from you before you leave them completely. I don't refute my legitimate, missed appointment nor the fee. I do hope however that six months from now I do not get another voicemail from them telling me I missed, yet again, an appointment with them and will be charged (again) another $75.00 for it. I wouldn't refer my friends nor family here for fear if they leave for other offices they'll be subject to the same underhanded procedures and rudeness as I was. read more

I joined Yelp just so I could review this wonderful dental office. The staff is very friendly and courteous in addition to being very knowledgeable and good at their jobs. Dr. Lena Casimir did a very thorough exam, and I felt very much at ease with her. I've only ever been to the family dentist before and I was a bit worried about finding a new place to get my check up, but I am so thrilled with this office, especially since they are not affiliated with any large chains so I feel like I'm supporting a local business. Hours are by appointment, and I went in on a Saturday afternoon. They take most insurances, and didn't have a problem with the fact that I couldn't find my insurance card. I'm almost looking forward to going back in 6 months! read more

I have been to Smart Smiles on 3 occasions over the past year and all of my visits have been very positive. As everyone has mentioned the office is clean and convenient and there is a free drink machine. The desk staff is extraordinarily friendly. I have had to reschedule an appointment and there was no penalty although I did reschedule with at least 24 hours of notice. They have appointments outside of typical business hours which is very important to me. Dr. Casimir is wonderful. As another reviewer has mentioned, she will clean your teeth herself rather than having a tech do it, and she does a very thorough job. She is very easy to relate to and has always been patient and friendly even though I think I'm always her last patient of the day. She tells me what I need to improve upon without coming across as angry or judgmental. After my cleaning, it is easy to book another appointment and even the non-standard business hour appointments are relatively easy to obtain. As for the sales pitches other reviewers experienced, I do remember filling out the survey when I was a new patient and being somewhat worried about whether I would feel pressured. But when she asked about what I had filled out, I just told her that I just needed cleanings/cavity check and she didn't pressure me at all. I would definitely recommend Dr. Casimir to anyone looking for a great dentist in the South Loop. read more

I've been seeing Dr. Deaver since 2014. He's an excellent dentist. He also has a strong partnership with endodontists and oral surgeons. I've had fillings, crowns, root canals, and implants. It's awkward to write a negative review for a medical professional... especially one who has excavated your mouth. But knowledge is power, right? I'll start with some positives. The office atmosphere is clean and pleasant. They offered me coffee. Front-desk staff is polite as polite can be. I had dental work done, and I can't particularly complain about the quality thereof (though mostly because I am not a dentist). But when I think back to my experience at Smart Smiles Dental, the first thought that comes to mind is of a used car salesman trying to wring your pockets for as much as you're worth. I should have known, after I was forced to fill out a survey of the elective cosmetic dental procedures I would "MOST" want to have done, even though I wanted NONE of them (after my initial polite decline to fill out that form, I was repeatedly asked to fill it out). So fine, I ranked "whitening" as the one I'd be most likely to have done. And let me tell you: when you're in that chair with your mouth pried open, a loud suction device hunting for saliva in the back of your throat, it's pretty difficult to protest the numerous details they give you on the whitening procedure you never wanted in the first place. All I wanted was to get rid of my cavities, but when it comes to the elective procedure you were forced to rank as #1 (even though they're well aware you're not interested), they really lay it on you. They even tried to convince me to bring in my mother (whom I had only mentioned in passing) for some of their sweet elective procedures that she did not need. Gag me. Uncomfortable, awkward, and unprofessional. Makes me think the only reason they offered me coffee was to stain my teeth enough to warrant convincing me to whiten them. read more

Dr. Lena Casimir has been my dentist for the past 2 years and I've only had positive experiences. She is very professional and a nice lady. Dr. Casimir is very thorough, taking the time to explain procedures needed to address my dental needs which include addressing the gum recession on the left side of my upper mouth likely caused by wearing metal braces as a child. She handles cleaning my teeth with a light touch using the laser scraper that I intensely dislike. The office staff members are friendly and professional. I was very pleased with Dr Casimir. She cleaned my teeth herself- my last dentist had a tech do it. She was patient and told me what going on in my mouth while she worked, which I appreciated. She also was willing to wait for x rays from my former dentist so I didn't have to pay for another set of x rays. The office space is surrounded by construction at the moment, so it is a bit eerie going in at first, but once you get up to the suite it is a really nice space. read more

A note of praise for Dr. Casimir and her staff for excellent professional service. I had my 1st appt a couple of weeks ago for cleaning. Several months previouslya dentist said a crown had to be replaced. I obtained a 2nd opinion that the crown did not need to be replaced now but should be monitored. I did not mention the crown issue to Dr Casimir. After the series of x-rays, examination and cleaning Dr. Casimir's opinion about the crown was the same as the 2nd opinion. I have been to many dentists in my time but never have I been so uncomfortable in my whole life than I have in this chair.On the surface this place is clean and has a pleasant atmosphere but when you get to the root there is serious decay! I met with Dr. Casimir who seemed very pleasant and courteous, however when I got in that chair, she broke me down, and gave me the hard sell. She refused to do a standard cleaning which my health care provides for free and told me I needed some deep cleaning that would of course cost me extra. She could not fill my cavities until she extracted my silver fillings and then I may need root canals and crowns....of course! When she eventually agreed to do a cleaning she did a careless job and tried to finish without polishing them.Fortunately for me I'm not the idiot she anticipated so I made her finish the job. Even my filling that I had to coerce her to do was not leveled properly. The worst thing about the whole experience was that she failed to tell me that my Insurance did not cover most of it and I would have to pay $106 out of pocket for just ONE FILLING! The best part is she failed to tell me this until she had shot me up with anesthetic, I was in no position to bargain at that point! I am not a difficult customer but I felt under attack at this place. They did not explain what was going on and were careless with their implementation (I have marks all around my lips today!)I recommend giving this place a skip if you don't want to be taken advantage of! read more

Well, I'm certainly not going back! The dental service is fine (not that I would know the difference). The insurance handling leaves a lot to be desired. In my case, the dentist did about $700 of work before notifying me that my insurance coverage for these procedures had not yet become active. I could have waited a few of months and it would have been covered. To make matters worse, they tried to get me to pay for the full amount without submitting claims to the insurance company. While my insurance didn't pay the claims, they reduced the charges by about 1/3 to the appropriate negotiated rate. Anyway, I'm out $500, but at least I avoided being cheated out of another $200. read more

Dr. Casimir and her really nice assistant just provided me with the very best and most thorough teeth cleaning I have ever had in my 43 years! The Dr. spent an hour cleaning my teeth with a new instrument that truly felt like it cleaned my teeth top to bottom front to back. They also did a full set of xrays ensuring that my teeth were on the right track. They gave generously of their time and services, and I think you will find that they will take care of you too! I had taken my 8 year old daughter there a month ago, and we were happy with that service as well. She provided flouride treatment at no additional cost which was very generous and showed that she cares more about the patient's teeth than every nickle and dime profit! read more

Preface: I have never written a review before but think it's the right thing to do to tell people about my experience here. I will just give you the facts. I scheduled an appointment for a teeth cleaning. I go every 6 months for a cleaning since I have had teeth. I have never had a cavity in my life. I moved to chicago in December and needed a new dentist. It took over an hour for x-rays alone and then Dr. Casimir then came and examined my teeth. According to her I had 8 cavities and would have to come back on 2 separate visits to get them all filled. Keep in mind I have never had a cavity in my life. On top of that they were running behind and didn't have time for my cleaning. I was pretty shocked to say the least. I then called my previous dentist freaking out and asked if I could come and get a second opinion from him (as well as a cleaning). Not shockingly, I only had one small cavity which I didn't even need a numbing shot for. I will let you draw your own conclusions, but word to the wise....be careful! read more
