Still gets five stars from me! I have tried many other Indian restaurants around Indianapolis and none of them can compare to Clay Oven. The flavors are always on point, their garlic naan is amazing and I haven't ordered anything I didn't like. I recently tried the chicken biryani (usually get chana masala) and it's going to be my go-to order from now on. Even my husband liked it and he doesn't usually enjoy Indian food. I needed some comfort food tonight, and this seemed like the perfect solution! (Take out). I kept it simple with the butter chicken, rice, garlic naan, and paneer pakora, and everything was excellent. The butter chicken had a very large portion that will feed me for at least three meals, and the rice was sticky and well seasoned. I wouldn't say that the paneer pakora held up to the trauma of door dash particularly well, but it was still really good despite its lack of crispiness. And who doesn't love some soft garlic naan? I would definitely like to try this place in person, I know they have a buffet. It was a tiny bit pricey, but the portion size seems to offset that appropriately. Their regular items (Chicken Tikka Masala, Chana Masala, and Goat Curry) are always amazing. The owner, and chef, frequently rotates in new items that are fragrant and delicious (Today was Eggplant Bhartha and Aloo Mehti). It's a hard NO from me and that's hard to get. I heard many people rave about this place and was tied between it or swaghat, but this was ultimately a little closer. I called ahead to check on the buffet, that is only on the weekends now, which was fine. I ordered on Yelp and it said 15-35 min. I went in 15 min after I ordered and no one was at the restaurant out front. Completely empty. Sounds from the kitchen let me know my food was cooking but without shouting outloud and being rude I kept trying to make noise so they would hear me on their own. Finally the man came out after 5-8 min and said are you here for a pick up? I told him I was. He said come back here and I walked back to the back of the restaurant to grab my to go food. I asked if there was a fork in the bag. He said no not today. What?!! So I have to go food and can't eat my rice with a fork? I ordered the chicken tikka masala and it was average at best. I take my foodie group here a few times a year. I have nothing but good experiences here. The service is generally spot on and you get an ample serving for a reasonable price. My personal favorite is the Chicken Curry... now you probably think spicy hot... not really unless you order it hot... I tend to go with the medium and it has very little heat at that level. It has a lot of flavor though. The chicken pieces are always nice and tender and the sauce is nice and creamy with the curry flavor. I tend to spoon it over the rice that comes with it, for a nice meal. I also had the shrimp tandoori appetizer, which was a bit plain to look at, but the grilled shrimp are delicately flavored, very nice. If that is not intense enough for you, it is served with 3 different sauces, so you can turn up the heat and intensity a bit if you like. The garlic naan is my favorite here. It smells soo good and is obviously fresh made... has that tiny little crunch to it in spots and otherwise the softness of the bread you would expect. Altogether, I would highly recommend this place if you're ever in the area. read more

it was the first time i'd ever ordered takeout from them. i looked at a few places, most didn't close until 10-11ish, clay oven closes at 9:30. i walked in after doing some late grocery shopping at 9:15. she tells me just just closed the register and asked if i had cash, i felt horrible, the wonderful lady working, uma, i believe, was amazing and told me not to worry about it and went to ask the kitchen if they'd do another order. by this point i was already making a backup plan, i didn't need it. the whole staff was amazing and pleasant to be around. uma talked with me and reassured me it was no problem, told me to call if i'll be there closer to 9 and she'll wait. i will order from them again (not so close to closing next time) and will eat in at some point to experience even more of the welcoming environment read more

I didn't know what to expect but the lunch buffet was VERY good on my first visit. They'll bring the naan to your table fresh and warm. There were plenty of meat options but a lot of veggie options, which is nice. There were a few items that I usually don't find at Indian buffets like a round potato appetizer and a small veggie kabob. I've been a few times now and there's some variety on the menu. You'll usually find: Chicken curry Chicken tikka masala Palak paneer A couple veggie dishes - sometimes with eggplants or lentils Aloo-something. The potato dish may change Gulab jamun for dessert, plus rice pudding. The staff was amicable and the atmosphere was released. We came in on a Saturday for the lunch buffet so hubby could try Indian food for the first time. This is the closet buffet to our house and I wanted him to have a variety to try. My husband and I visited yesterday evening and it was my first experience at the Clay Oven. He has visited prior and had been really pleased with the lunch buffet so he has been begging me to try it so we went for dinner! There was only two other diners while we were there so it was very quiet and that was really nice. The woman working was SO kind and friendly from the time we walked in until we left, I could have sat there and chatted with her for a while. The menu was super clear to understand and for that I was grateful, I always feel a little hesitant when ordering because I really prefer to not eat goat or lamb (sorry! I'm adventurous but still picky, what can I say?) and sometimes menus aren't really descriptive of what you are getting! They had it clearly broken up between menus with a great description underneath each title. Typically, we are appetizer people, but knew we wanted to try desserts so we didn't order anything just to be surprised that they offered complimentary Papadum with three different "sauces". One was a mixture of tomatoes, onions and seasoning, the second (my favorite) was cilantro, mint, & lemon juice, and the third was a sweet, thick Tandoori sauce. Without any prompting she began to explain what they were, knowing we probably didn't know. It made me feel less stupid to be honest. We were really appreciative of her explanations! For our meals, my husband ordered the Tandoori Mixed Grill which was a lot of different proteins! It came out sizzling hot on a skillet with cabbage and onions underneath. (ordered medium) with Garlic Naan. He was beyond happy with his, usually I'd steal a bite but again - no lamb and it was fish & shrimp. He really liked it though and that Garlic Naan was INCREDIBLE! Y'all know I tried the bread and was so crispy from being baked in the clay oven but also still so soft. The garlic was delicious. I asked for her recommendation between the Chicken Tikka masala and the Chicken Peshawari and she pointed me towards the Tikka Masala. (I ordered Medium hot) and a piece of regular Naan. I really enjoyed mine as well, I didn't find mine to be that hot, but I did feel like there was a sweet taste to it almost. I know that despite their appearances they are very different, but I do think I'd prefer a curry from Thai Spice than this meal. It was not bad by any means, but the flavor was interesting. I'd probably try something different the next time we visit. The original style Naan was perfect for eating with my food, It tasted great in the sauciness of my meal. Now that I have gotten all of that out of the way, I can finally talk about the star of the show. Dessert. My husband ordered the fruit custard which was really good, but I ordered the Gulab Jamun. It was described as "light cheese morsels dipped in cinnamon flavored syrup". I loved this. It was completely not what I was expecting and it was perfect in every way. I've attached a photo because I wasn't really sure what to expect, but it was much better than I could imagine. It wasn't cheesy, the inside was fluffy. I gave my husband the other piece because it was still very sweet, but it was delicious and I'll have to send him to the south side to pick me some up because this is a dessert I know I will crave! Despite it not being the most favorite meal I have ever had, the clay oven definitely deserves 5 stars. Our waters were kept full, the restaurant was extremely clean and the service was beyond excellent. I'd give it 10 stars for the dessert all over again. This is my second visit to the Clay Oven. The first time I think the food had a lot more flavor, but out of the two times I've gone, I haven't been disappointed. The lunch buffet let's you try several dishes at a reasonable price! I recommend the mango lassi! It's an Indian drink, that tastes AMAZING! Yogurt is used to make this drink so if you're lactose intolerant, beware. All in all, I enjoy this place. The people are very quiet, but they're kind. The ambiance is nice. I went there with two of my friends who are mixed race couple (one Indian/one white) to eat. The host asks deliberately (even though they were standing together and I'm standing a little bit away), oh are you two together? (even if the text sounds innocuous, it was a pretty crass comment, and the three of us separately felt the same thing). Its a pity that they don't have basic courtesy or customer service.
